ARC✨️
I feel bad for giving such a low rating but I can't find anything positive about this book.
half of it was about an unrelated investigation, at first I read some of it in case it ended up related to the murder but nope we just needed to have useless insights on the MC's """love interest""".
the romance subplot was awwwful felt so forced and unnecessary. the guy was boring AND a cop who killed a kid with a fake gun. lots to think about🧎♀️
nothing about the murder was riveting or revolutionary or shocking enough to warrant a story about it.
after this read I'm losing faith in thrillers I really am

And we are back with Rebecca Ellis and her team, but things are different now! After the fallout from book 2 and the pending article about Euan, the teams have changed.
We get to see more Bryce and more Connor. Becca Ellis is teamed with Bryce which at times was more than awkward for the pair as they are investigating the death of two teenagers, found washed up by the lake, and drowned. The secret parties and that game! Well! Not all is what it seems.
Connor is paired with Euan, and it was the best thing for the pair of them. Connor wasn’t acting like a cocky little wotsit like before, plus he and Euan had a bond. This bond is what I loved. It’s also what might just have saved Euan as they are investigating the local drug problem.
Two separate cases and I wasn’t sure what would happen. It was fast-paced as we watch the two teams working apart. Plus trying to deal with the fallout of their private lives. It made it a page-turning reading.
My only gripe as it were, I didn’t really “get” why the killer was killing. I didn’t see the link at all, plus there is another link to Ellis (Becca) and I am not sure if it’s important or just added in. I will have to see what happens in the next book.
I do love this series and this book was written slightly differently to the others. Not sure if that’s because it was more teen angst, but I loved the feel of it.
Plus that ending, well I have a small smile and cheer! Happy days!

Although the novel has a satisfying mystery and an interesting plot, some readers could find some of the details to be predictable or commonplace in the genre. There are also instances where a deeper examination of specific characters' motivations might be helpful for the story. Fans of the genre won't be able to put "The Dead Lake" down. I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of The Dead Lake, the third novel to feature Detective Rebecca Ellis of the Bangor, Maine PD.
The bodies of two high school seniors are found floating in a local lake. They drowned, but there are several clues that make it seem suspicious. Becca and her partner, Bryce Pelletier start asking questions at the school and get nowhere, so it is an anonymous social media post that sets them in the right direction.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Dead Lake, which is another fine addition to the series. In fact I find myself getting excited when I see another book in the series as the author has a way of drawing the reader in and not letting go. This is no different.
The novel is told from various points of view, mostly that of the detectives and the victims’ friends. There is no hint of who the perpetrator is or what the motive could be and that’s the way I like my reading, a good chance to speculate and guess as it makes the read more interesting and enthralling. In this case experience gave me an inkling, but not enough to say I guessed in advance.
The novel is obviously teencentric given the victims and it’s a world I don’t understand. I have no idea why they keep things quiet and lie or why they threaten each other with social ostracism or why that even matters when they’re soon off to college. White privilege at its finest, I assume. So Robin and Bryce have to navigate this world and it gives them two or maybe three suspects, but proving a case with little to go on is interesting. I admired their resourcefulness and imagination and got caught up in the narrative quickly.
The novel has a bit of everything. It has a great narrative style, it introduced me to a world I don’t want to know more about and there is tension, a small amount of violence, several chases, a lot of lying, the influence of social media and even a hint of romance. It adds up to an engrossing whole that I have no hesitation in recommending as a good read.

This is the third investigation featuring Detective Rebecca Ellis of Bangor Police Department.
Ellis investigates a case where teenage students Anthony Mitchell and Carly Stone are found floating in a lake after attending a student party and it soon becomes apparent that they were murdered. The couple participated in a game, the nature of which is a closely guarded secret among high school seniors.
Ellis and her colleague Bryce Pelletier work painstakingly to uncover the chain of events that led to the murders. It isn't easy, not least because the students aren't willing to talk at first. Secrecy and lies threaten the investigation at every turn until a crucial breakthrough is made, enabling Ellis to home in on the killer. Even then, she comes perilously close to getting it wrong.
There is a secondary story around Euan McCallister, who is tracking down the supplier of a lethal batch of fentanyl. McCallister is also nervous around the imminent publication of a newspaper article that will paint him in a less than favourable light.
This has been an excellent series so far, with Robin Mahle's writing fast-paced and immersive and there is a palpable sense of tension throughout.
Ellis is emotionally complex but totally authentic and this enables us to invest in her as a character. We also get to learn more about the team behind Ellis and how they support each other in challenging situations.
Whilst you can read this as a standalone book, I would recommend reading the other two investigations first in order to better understand the main characters and their back stories.

I am so happy that I got a chance to read and review this police procedural thriller. Although this is the third in the series, I have not read the others and decided to buy them to catch up. This can be read as a stand-alone though.

There are so many secrets and surprises that it captivates you and you have to keep going to see what happens. The two dead were romantically involved after recent break ups with others. Which causes the police to investigate their exes. Can they find the killer before it’s too late?
The author provides the reader with intrigue and suspense that grips the reader and ensures that you will not put it down. The descriptive nature of the authors writings take you to a place that will immediately enthrall and engross you. What happened to Anthony and Carly? Two popular Pinedale high school kids found dead after a senior party with an agenda. The plot thickens with so many unanswered questions, jealous ex boyfriend, jealous ex girlfriend and an alum with a score to settle. Pinedale is located in upstate Maine on the coast where in April the waters and air are still frigid. So why would these kids go to the ocean for a party that involved getting into the water?
Detective Rebecca Ellis is a well respected officer on the force, her father was also on the force until he retired recently due to a case gone bad. When Detective McCallister joins the department she finds an instant attraction to him as they form a connection she finds out why he has transferred to her department, will she keep his secret? Seems the department has a few secrets of their own, will his expose them all when the reporter covering his case publishes her story?
I could not put this one down, I just wanted to know more, what was happening? I would say suspense crime thriller would cover this book, it had it all. I really enjoyed Detective Ellis's character she's a strong powerful woman yet loving and compassionate. The author did a great job leading you down so many paths throughout the story that left you craving more. I felt the ending worked well with the story as well no unleft pieces for you to wonder about.

This book is just brilliant.
Although a little slow in getting going but it keeps your interest and flows nicely keeping your attention.
It all starts at Pinedale High, Pushaw Lake and the deaths of students Carly Stone and Anthony Mitchell. Was this just a unlucky accident or is there something more sinister about the tragic deaths?
Detective Rebecca Ellis of the Bangor Police department gets the call and the case but straight off things just do not fit and as she digs deeper into their deaths things become more and more confusing and complex. The complex case makes Ellis and her partner work hard taking them in different directions until eventually they finally get a break and then things start coming together.
Meanwhile Ellis has her own personal problems to contend with being her father and her feelings for one of her own team. Adding to this Detective Bryce Pelletier and their youngest detective with a troubled past get a major drugs case after a third victim dies involving a new killer drug.
With so much going on you can’t but help getting engrossed and guessing what is going on and what the ending is going to be? A good ending and it opens up to the next book in this series. “I can’t wait!”

Is it the competition that brings tragedy to two teens?👫
I'm pretty well hooked on stories like this one about Bangor police detective Rebecca Ellis, her colleagues and the cases they work. The book quickly sets up the night the deaths occur and the secrecy the teens involved feel they must maintain despite their friends' deaths the night of a lakeside senior spring break blowout.
The investigation was complex and kept me invested, and I really liked the developments in Ellis's love life and the storm clouds hanging over Euan as the result of a tragic case where he shot a teen when employed with the Boston PD. And, after reading the previous two books in the series where Rebecca and Euan were partnered on cases, this one diverged and changed the team dynamic a bit by switching their partners for two new cases. I don't recall other books of this genre doing anything similar.
It kept me wondering and that's always a good thing when I'm reading a police thriller. And I like all of the members of the police team (maybe Fletch not so much as the others at this point). Will I read more of this series? Definitely.

I absolutely loved this. It's another cracking read in what is a great series. This time, we are in the world of teenagers so we're dealing with all sorts of teenage emotions and social media. The apparent drowning of a young couple after a prank during a party turns into a murder investigation. Becca is paired this time with a different partner while McAllister is paired with Bevins to look into dealing of fentanyl throughout the area. The change around in partnership was interesting and it was good getting more of an insight into the various other characters in the team.
I found this a riveting read. It's more steady than fast paced but I enjoy the characters a lot and how they work their way through each investigation. There's several twists and I found the teenagers really annoying. I hope I wasn't as bad as that way back when! There's more personal stuff for Becca this time while Euan's old transgressions come back to haunt him when his story becomes public knowledge. I hope there's not too long to wait for the next in the series.

Keegan Mills, president of the student council, is the leader, and two names are drawn, one female and one male. There is a cash prize. Who can stay under the water longer? There are rules.
Carly Stone and Anthony Mitchell are selected. They both come out of the water, and Carly wins. Then later, the two are found dead. A drowning. This was not an accident.
Carly was a brilliant student with a scholarship to Tulane. Anthony was her ex-boyfriend, but they were back together as a couple. He had been accepted to UCLA on a baseball scholarship. With their whole lives in front of them. Now dead. MURDER. They were both excellent swimmers.
Bangor Police Detective Rebecca Ellis and her partner, Detective Bryce Pelletier, are assigned to the case and are getting nowhere. No classmates are talking. With their recent behavior, Carly's ex-boyfriend, Theo, is a suspect, as well as Anthony's ex-girlfriend, Megan. Carly's best friend, Ainsley, is also a suspect, but she knows her better than anyone.
The case becomes complex and leads them to past senior classes who have been involved that are older—also, an IG post.
In addition, the lake borders two cities, and they must work with that department to find out about other possible drownings in the past and if they are associated with this dangerous senior game, and then the groundskeeper at the park.
In the meantime, as we left off from the last book in the series, sparks are flying between Detective Rebecca Ellis and Detective Euan McCallister. (I love these two together) Now that they are on separate cases, she is paired with Detective Bryce Pelletier, who also romantically likes her, but she thinks of him as a friend.
McCallister is paired with Det. Connor Bevins (age 25) and they are working on a dangerous high-profile drug trafficking case. McCallister, Ellis, and Bevins worked on the last case, Connex investigation, in the last book.
In addition, McCallister's Boston past is front and center in the media (which he confessed to Ellis the last book), with the latest Boston Globe article returning it to the surface. This is causing him and the department trouble, even though he was cleared of all charges—then a tragedy occurs. His boss does not want Rebecca dragged into this due to her past.
Rebecca knows this drowning was not an accident. Were they drugged? She must dive keep to determine the real killer since he/she may be involved in past killings and future ones. The case is complex and dangerous with many red herrings surfacing with interviews of parents, classmates, exes, past graduating classes, and the campground staff. Rebecca is determined. What is the motive of the killer?
We also get to catch up with her dad, Hank (retired cop), with a cameo appearance, and even her drug-addicted stepbrother is connected to this case.
A dangerous and chilling crime and an unstoppable detective!
What a great series! I hope this series continues, as these characters are too good to end. I want more Rebecca/Euan—it appears we may get into the dark past of Connor in the next book.
First, I was a bit worried when I saw the description that Det Rebecca Ellis was partnered with Det Bryce Pelletier instead of Det Euan McCallister (big fan)?? However, never fear; we find Euan at 5% into the book and I could breathe easier. Their boss has them working on two separate cases. McCallister is partnered with Det. Connor Bevins, we met in the last book on a drug case attempting to get drug dealers off the street.
I respected Connor much more in this series; less cocky, and it seemed Euan was a good mentor for him. I liked that he came clean and opened up about his past with Euan in light of what Euan is going through and had his back.
I was delighted to see there are still sparks between the two Rebecca/Euan. I only recently discovered the multi-talented author Robin Mahle and was delighted to get in on the ground level with the start of this exciting series.
The author always delivers twisty heart-stopping suspense in this clever cop procedural crime thriller series with a cast of well-developed compelling characters, well-paced, crisp writing, and a razor-sharp leading character, Rebecca, you will root for.
For fans of Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan and Lisa Gardner's DD Warren series. I cannot wait to see what comes next!
This series is a great place to start, if you have not read this author. However, I recommend you start with #1. I read this one in one sitting, and unputdownable!

WOW!!! What an intense riviting crazy rollercoaster ride full of suspicion, intrigue, suspense, danger, deceit, secrets, lies, betrayal, angst, murder, such an addicting twisted crime thriller you can't put down.
Detective Rebecca Ellis & Bryce Pelletier are partnered together on a case of two teens Carly Stone & Anthony Mitchell found dead on shore of Pushaw Lake, seniors from Pindale High School celebrating Spring Break a secret ritual they do for popular kids no one knows about the games involved.
Detective Euan McCallister is partnered with Detective Connor Bevins both have secrets on their past they don't want to come to light it could ruin their careers, Euan & Ellis have feeling for one another so does Bryce for her which complicates things a bit.
I definitely recommend to get this riviting on the edge of your seat Crime drama, so many suspects to interrogate to find out who & why Carly & Anthony were killed, was it rejected ex's, someone with a grudge, its a must read, so well written with great interesting characters that pull you right into all the chaos.

The school is the first place to start asking questions, but Bangor Police Detective Rebecca Ellis and her partner Detective Bryce Pelletier hit a wall of silence when they try talking to the victims' classmates. Then a cryptic note on social media helps Ellis uncover the truth about a dangerous Spring Break tradition and what the kids were really up tp on that fateful night.
This is the first book in the series that I've read. It did read well as a standalone, but I would have preferred to have read the series from the beginning. Detective Rebecca Ellis is a complex character. Two high school students have been found dead, floating on an icy lake. Rebecca Ellis and her team are called in to investigate. There's lots of suspects in this twist filled read. There's also an unrelated investigation that takes up a big chunk of this book.

A chilling game is played during a High School party at a local lake. The bodies of two pupils are found floating, and because of marks on the bodies, accidental death can be ruled out.
Rebecca Ellis and her partner, Detective Bryce Pelletier get very little information from the teens that attended the party. A post on social media leads Rebecca to possible suspects in the murders. Which one of them is a cold blooded killer?
I love Robin Mahle's books, and I love the main characters, their personal stories are incorporated into the books as well, and make the characters more real.
The red herrings keep the reader guessing all the way through, and the killer, when revealed, is a huge surprise.
I have to say that this is my least favourite of the series so far.
I struggled to get into the book, I am not sure why. But it did keep me engaged when I passed the halfway point.

What happened to Anthony and Carly....
There's a senior party and they have have a tradition 2 seniors go into the icy lake with their hands and feet bound together winner gets the money... During this senior party Anthony and his girlfriend Carly get picked she wins and they come out and get unbound... BUT what happened because both have been found dead in the lake...
Detectives ellis and pelletier start to investigate and come up with few people who could be potential suspects if this doesn't turn out to be an accidental drowning, As they question friends and look into previous senior who has made a suspicions post about them being sacrificed they find that there has been other supposed accidental drownings in the same lake but were thy accidental or did someone force them in....
Read to find out but you will be surprised last person thought it was..
there was a back story aswell between detectives Ellis and Mcallister but didnt realise this was 3rd book in detective ellis series havent read 1 and 2 so away to purchase and do that now...

The third in the Rebecca Ellis series, this story follows Ellis and Bryce Pelletier as they investigate two murders. Two high school students are found dead in an icy lake, with evidence pointing to foul play. The detectives face a wall of silence from classmates until a cryptic social media post reveals a potential motive. Is this tied to a dangerous Spring Break tradition or is something more sinister at play?
Meanwhile, Connor and Euan are trying to trace a deadly drug. I liked seeing Connor and Euan's relationship develop but the case fell a little flat for me.

The Dead Lake is the third book in Rebecca Ellis Series by Robin Mahle, where Detective Ellis and her team are investigating in a case about two teens found dead and floating in the icy Pushaw Lake.
Well this book was my first read in this series and I think it would be the last; to be honest I didn't like it that much to follow any upcoming parts. The plot was very slow and boring including many irrelevant incidents.I wasn't that much interested in the romance or the Death by Distribution case that McCallister ( one of the Detectives ) was investigating in.
Even though crime mystery is my favorite genre, I wasn't hooked to the crime in this book or even excited to know how the Detectives will solve the mystery.
Unfortunately this wasn't an enjoyable read for me.

With several possible suspects, it’s a twisty turn to figure out who exactly is behind the deaths. Will the wrong person be arrested?
It’s a good police procedural, but there’s also an unrelated investigation that takes up a lot of the storyline, and I felt like it was competing too much with the main plot.
Part of a series I haven’t read before, it still works mostly as a standalone, but reading the previous books would give the reader better background.

Oh what a chilling book and not just because of a cold lake. The reality of this situation is extremely sad and how the detectives go about getting their man/woman is exhausting. Robin has become one of my favorite authors as her writing style is seem less and her characters are so flawed yet amazingly awesome! I love getting to know the characters more and more. The way they work together to get things done and how they have each other’s backs…or do they? HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!.

Took me a while to finish
It was okay. The reveal wasn't very thrilling but it was okay. My one problem was the overusage of the last names. I mean, even in a casual situation last names were used and I got so confused because there are so many people to keep track of and all of the switches in first name and last name use is sooo upsetting. But, maybe it's just me. If that doesn't bother you, you'll enjoy this.

Read only 85pc
I have never never stopped reading a book at the 85 % mark. Except this novel. It's too frustrating to keep reading only about dead ends in an investigation for most part of the book. The waiting for the correct lead / suspect becomes painfully boring. So much so that one loses interest in reading anymore. So, sorry only 3 stars from me. I hope her other novels are better - if i read any...

The Dead Lake - Immediately after a couple win a game at a party with other young people on the cusp of adulthood their lives are brutally taken. What occurred and why will no one talk to law enforcement about this "game" that is shrouded in mystery?
I thoroughly enjoyed each of these stories and I will watch for more from this talented author.
