Ellen's Secret #2

Still at War

Rate this book
Ellen is now thirteen, living in an upstairs flat with her parents in Morpeth, England. In the aftermath of World War II, many of her neighbours mistrust the German prisoners of war who still live among them, and resent the POWs for taking scarce jobs away.

In Keeping Secrets, Ellen helped a German POW escape. Now she worries that he may never have gotten away, and is still in Morpeth. What if her neighbours find out what she did?

Jean Booker explores the complex and often turbulent process of rebuilding in the aftermath of war in this realistic tale based on her own experience growing up in England during and after WWII.

This is a sequel to Ellen's Secret. I hadn't read Ellen's Secret. This was a light read about a girl who still has to keep her secret from her family but hiding it the secret may wreck the connection with her mam and dad and friends.

I did quite enjoy this book. I picked it up at my son's Scholastic book fair for myself. The book was an extremely fast read, and quite enjoyable. However, that being said, I thought that parts of the book were rushed. I know, usually I say that they're overly long, with lots of extra fluff - I thought that in this book all of the fluff had been removed, and that it left something to be desired. More back story into the accident and how she saved the young soldiers life would have been nice, through a flashback or a dream sequence. It was an extremely fast read, finished in about 2 hours. Overall, I really enjoyed the concept and the realism of the setting, just wish more back story had been included in the book. But, well worth the read.

Decent book - a little too teen girl angsty for me. Its message is a good one, but hits you like a blunt object (again and again). Some of the girls in my class loved it though.
