We'll All Go Flying

Rate this book
And what will we spy in the sky so high? Now that our intrepid explorers are finished their grand sailing adventure (We'll All Go Sailing, 2001), they are ready to take off again in this attention-grabbing sequel. This time the three friends take to the sky and count whatever they see, from helicopters to bats and everything in between. And when they are done, they'll tell the story of their exciting trip as they invite everyone along on the next ride.

Another brilliant picture book for the primary audience. Young toddlers will love the colours and simple, recognizable images. Easy gatefolds invite little ones to open up each page. And older preschoolers will count along as the sky gets more and more crowded with airborne delights. Maggee Spicer and Richard Thompson's spirited text won't have to be read many times before it's memorized. Artist Kim La Fave repeats his wildly colourful primary style, which debuted in We'll All Go Sailing and earned him a nomination for the Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Literature, Illustration.

This multipurpose book will once again appeal to a wide range: from ready-to-talk to ready-for-school.

Fun repetition and counting. Art was fine.

Note: I have no idea when I first read this book... soon after it was published in the spring of 2002, I assume... so I am using the "date added" as my "date I finished" date as well...

In 1998, Fitzhenry & Whiteside published FISHES IN THE OCEAN a simple pattern book I had written for emerging readers... simple, repetitive text, simple illustrations.

WE'LL ALL GO FLYING was the third of three books (co-authored with Maggee Spicer and illustrated by Kim LaFave) in a series that again used a predictable pattern and simple text: "We'll all go flying / In the bright blue sky, / And what will we spy / In the sky so high?" In the bound copy of these books, F&W decided that they would like to include a bit of paper engineering as an added feature — the question part of the rhyme was posed on a folded half-page flap that the reader lifted to reveal a double page illustration and — on the backside of the flap, the "answer": "Two helicopters / And a sleek jet plane! / That's what we'll spy / In the bright blue sky."

Tricky giving a star rating to one of your own books, but we settled on three stars for this book, agreeing that neither the text nor the illustrations worked quite as well in this book as in the two earlier WE'LL ALL GO... books
