Ruby Gloom--along with her cat Doom--interprets a variety of well-known sayings to reveal their unintended meanings, for example, "misery loves company--but watch out, she can also be very annoying."
Right now I am still not sure where or whatever made my sister to trip over this but within her lifestyle she has embraced it for her daughter. Although it is a lot cleaner than Bratz and not as full face like Monster High it still makes me wonder, especially since for a little known cartoon show, which has now been made into books.
Anyway this particular book can be geared towards children but all in all I think the audience is actually for those who may be slightly older due to the subject. Basically the book just takes old adages and gives them a twist to suit the nature of the cartoon such as using her friend Misery or adding a cocky reply such as having seven skeletons.
For the illustrations it uses actual illustrations that could be found in the cartoon itself so the coloring of the book is a bit on the darkish side although it matches the nice material cover. And for those who are into the show then it will make sense who the other characters may be or why they are used.
My only complaint with the book is that they don't use all the characters from the show, especially when there is a place within the book that the character would be more acceptable such as the two heads are better than one. As a result the gallery that is included in the front and back just behind and before the covers is incomplete.
Altogether it is a decent little book of wisdom to have and one that would definitely be a conversation-starter if you left it lying around. Otherwise I do like the wit that was used in making the book and there are some small nuggets that are better in this Ruby way than in the original format.
words to live and die by. Ruby Gloom is my favorite <3 "Always look on the brightside ... unless the dark side is your bright side. That's okay, too" -Ruby Gloom (Clam Lynch)
Very cool book, I want to read the others now. I found this in a book store as I was browsing... (or should I say drooling). Very mod/goth but very cool and hip. A must have for any "Hot Topic" customer. Love the black velvet cover. A Eloise meets Beetlejuice kind og book. Very quick read... like 5 min.
This was a book I picked by it's cover but it sure did deliver! A creepy yet totally cute book that gives the reader the character Ruby's version of advice. The illustrations are contrast to the black pages and make the story very interesting to look at as well as read. Probably best suited for around 1st grade.
Sydney C. gave this to me today, just four days before Halloween: very timely, indeed! My favorite "lesson" from the book is "Don't count your eggs before they hatch...because sometimes they eat each other." (Thanks, Sydney, for the recommendation!)
This is the best pick me up for those that see the world from a happier, but darker perspective. I have had this book since middle school and sometimes on bad days, I just curl up in my bed and read it. It is perfect for teens and those adults that embrace their (upbeat) dark side.
