Crown Prince Nicholas of the Snake Shifter Kingdom is busy hiding his sexuality from his family who doesn't care that he is gay. However, he is the heir to the throne which means he needs to produce an heir.
Crown Prince Edward of the Dragon Shifter Kingdom has been kicked out of his palace by his father after coming out of the closet so he turns to Prince Nicholas.
When the two fall in love and decide to hold the mating ritual that will bind their souls together as one presided over by Mother Nature, their two kingdoms decide to go to war; the Snakes and the Dragons consider one another to be inferior. Can they figure out a way to perform the ritual and still keep their kingdoms from destroying one another or before Mother Nature steps in and takes matters into her own hands? Because Mother Nature strikes with fire and death to any who defy her.
What do they do when the other Shifter kingdoms become involved? Will the horses, wolves, bats and others tolerate two different species uniting as one thus throwing off the balance of power forever?
Patrick Wendling-Markwell has been writing since he was a child and has written many newspaper and magazine articles as well as poetry and short stories. It was only recently though that he decided to write books full time, leaving behind a career in EMS. As an author he has decided to try his hand in many genres from fantasy, thrillers, horror, mysteries, M/M erotica and more. He has won many awards over the years for his articles and you can even find several of his poems at the International Library of Congress where he won the Editor's Choice Award three years in a row.
He has a love for books of all types and was even diagnosed by a psychiatrist as a Bibliophile and Bibliophage. On any given day Patrick can be found reading, even while doing other things at the same time. His flair for words has continually allowed people from around the world to access the vivid imaginings of his own mind which he enjoys putting down on paper for all to see and helps them access a world of fantasy and crazed imagination never before accessed.
He is also lucky enough to be married to a wonderful man that wants him to write full time, concentrating fully on it so he can fulfill his dream.
Nicholas is the crown prince of the snake shifters, he is surprised when he is approached by the dragon crown prince Edward for aid, snake and dragon shifters think each other inferior so for a dragon to hunt out a snake for aid is extremely rare. When Nicholas gives Edward a place to stay they rapidly fall in love and they decide to mate, but tensions run high in their kingdoms when their fathers’ find out, now it’s a race against time to complete the mating ritual before their fathers destroy each other.
This is a great story to read if you are looking for a sexually charged shifter story. Nicholas and Edward make a very sexual and hot couple, they fit together like two halves of a whole even though they are different species. The storyline is interesting with its tension and arrogance between the species, the role that Mother Nature plays and Nicholas and Edward’s determination to stay together no matter what. The sexual descriptions are down and dirty, rough and passionate, there is no tender loving just passionate sex including some dragon tail loving.
There are a couple of times that you have niggles, like they fell in love really quick or you felt the sex was at an inappropriate time, but the author addresses these issues quite nicely each time and with humour in some places. The writing becomes stilted and more formal at times but that is when the characters seem to be addressing us, the readers, in explanation. There are some characters that we meet that will be in future books and the storyline will follow on with the uniting of the different species.
I will recommend this story to those that want a hot shifter sex fix, explicit sex, interesting characters, a hot foursome, finding surprising love and a very happy hot ending.
While this is quite a simple and straightforward shifter story, I found the types of shifters and some of their customs quite entertaining. A snake shifter and a dragon shifter falling in love (and that happened way too fast to even be called insta-love, as far as I am concerned) are not an everyday event, and the consequences for both their species are dire. Hwever, they cleverly manage their way through it.
What was missing, for me, were some more details about their world, the motivations of the characters beyond the very basic (not to say generic), and the violence was too detailed for my taste. These are not "nice" shifters, they are brutal and rough. If that is what you're looking for, you will probably like this novella.
