Rate this book
Author Vpain has lyrically recorded her life lessons in Hear Me Roar. After what seemed an endless addiction to love- wounds began to heal, and a greater value of self came forth. As author Vpain discovers what it means to be a woman, she documented each step in her struggle for actualization. She reaches out to people of all calibers who seek to break the destructive or abusive cycles which can plague their lives.
Using several different poetic forms, she ranges from raw poetic motion to sensual sonnets. Just when you fall in love, you may laugh- and shortly thereafter shed a tear. This emotional poetry collection is aimed at a mature audience, yet some poetry may be appropriate to share with younger loved ones. Brace yourself for Hear Me Roar. Feel free to enjoy the excerpt and even share it as you experience the 'poesy' of Vpain. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtl3...

Born the first of four daughters, VPain was raised in Indianapolis, IN. As a second grader, her teacher projected her love of poetry upon the entire class. Reciting at least 30 pages of poetry by the end of that year, literature had begun to make its mark on the artist. She began to write poetry outside of school, and it eventually became a release. By high school, VPain had joined the Speech Team and become a member of the National Forensics League. Her poetry program included Naomi Long Madgett, Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou. These lyrics stayed with her. She is today inspired to interpret dreams for those who go numb from the traumas which can take place in life. In her book, Hear Me Roar, she has compiled the poetry born from her coming of age. Her story is to be shared as a cheat sheet to surviving your search and ultimate loyalty to self.

Pain's poetry is not for the faint-hearted but then again, neither is life. Her poems are raw, graphic and passionate. She shares her journey with us as well as the wisdom she gained from it.

At the end, she explains her intentions in a letter to the reader. I especially enjoyed this. People (especially young women) need to read this and take note of her message. The following words stood out for me: "Dreamers stand out from a graying background of people who are suppressed for whatever reason. We are constantly following a notion, or taking a note, trying something new, or rearranging things just so. Never give up on your dreams dreamer, never let a beautiful nocturnal vision go without interpretation."

My favourite poems were:
Now what?
At last, the end
Pussy Power Poem
Should we be? (this one reads very much like a poetic story)
Our First Kiss

I liked the way the book was formatted and put together. The author writes well. I just felt that some of the rhyming in the poems felt forced and didn't flow freely. That can get agitating to the reader. Otherwise, well done!

Rating 3.5 stars- Heartfelt and Purposeful

It does not take long upon reading V. Pain's work to realize that her poems are a labor of love. She speaks from a place of earnestness and sincerity about the universal female experience. The intoxication of infatuation, the frustration of failed relationships, the pain of missing someone you used to know/love, the joy of motherhood-all can be found in her poetry.

I especially enjoyed her "Nightmare" poems, the poems to her children, and the ones in which she taps into darker emotions of loss, frustration, and anger.

Structurally speaking, the overall poetic composition harkens back to the traditional, while the content is intimate and confessional. The poems that I enjoyed the most were the ones that were free enough to break away from traditional rhyme schemes(but that's solely my cup of tea, 'cause I'm one of those weird people who actually prefer when poems don't rhyme).

This is a lovely, heartfelt debut and I look forward to seeing more of V. Pain's progression through her poetry.

This book feels like a calm, honest conversation rather than a lecture. I appreciated how practical the advice is, especially the way the author breaks complex ideas into simple, actionable steps. This was written from real experience, not theory. A great read for anyone looking to make small but meaningful changes without feeling overwhelmed.

With chapters like Daydreams, Nightmares, Vibin' and Truth Hurts, many different poems come together to make up this collection. It is a reflection of the changes and challenges of one woman as she transitions from her clumsy stumble into adulthood, into a woman and mother. Many can relate. Some favorites of the author are Now What (2007), Come With Me (2012) and Should We Be?(2002) This book confesses, laughs, cries and rages in all the right places. Between the words, you may see a snapshot of yourself.
