Tristan ‘Trip’ Hagan is a Husky shifter who was born to be the Hagan Clan’s next Alpha, a position of honor and nobility, a position he never wanted and was all too happy to pass onto his younger brother. But when they discovered his brother couldn’t have pups, the responsibility of continuing the Hagan Alpha line fell back to Trip. Under the weight of the Hagan Council’s demand to fulfill his duty, Trip settled down and produced an heir, but after years of struggling to uphold his family’s traditions, Trip found the courage to do what no other Hagan Alpha had done in the history of the clan: he came out.
Five years later, and Trip is living a happy life with his cheeky pup and their own little makeshift family. True mates within canine shifter clans are very rare, but Trip has had one since he can remember. Despite losing his heart to Boone twenty years ago, Trip holds little hope of ever getting to bond with the sexy Enforcer, as it’s against clan laws for pure-bloods to bond with half-breeds. With the call from their feral halves to seal the bond growing stronger by the day, can Trip and Boone find a way to be together without losing everything?

I am not reviewing every story from "M/M Romance Group's Love Has No Boundaries" event; but some with separate covers might get one :).
This seemed to be a set-up for a new series from Charlie Cochet, who usually brought historical stories.
Things I Like: + The first two chapters were definite winner!! It was hilarious and fun. Imagine growing men getting all freaked out because of a mutant spider then of course, a woman saved the day (you go, Mom!). I loved this scene so very much.
+ Robbie (the kid) was adorable. I also loved how Robbie's mom (Brook), was a kick-ass woman (instead of being portrayed as a bitch or villain). Plus she was still involved in Trip and Robbie's life.
+ There was a different take on the true-mate bonding plot, which was a good attempt to make this different than other shifter stories
Things I Was "Meh" About: + Too many characters introduced, that I got lost on who's who.
+ I agreed with Sandra, that the shifter culture was a bit unclear; also in regards with the introduction in the prologue.
+ The story was heavy in conversations (sometimes rapid ones). While it was nice in the beginning, but after awhile, it got exhausting, and I just lost the plot.
Things I Dislike: + Did we really have to get the "gay shifter is abomination" plot again?? I'm just getting a bit tired with it; the "we" vs. "the world" (in regards to gay shifters, I mean). I think male/male shifter stories could be developed into something like mainstream shifter series: power balance, conspiracy, or you know, something like Mercedes Thompson series?
+ Oh, and the bitchy women (other than Robbie's mom). Yep, there was even this line: "St. Veles’ Biggest Bitch" ... which didn't impress me at all.
Having said that, I would still up for Hunter's book...
This right here is what I want from Cochet’s books!
Basically the blurb says it all. Trip is held back from his true mate Boone, because of tradition and rules. Not wanting to rock the boat, when however, is enough enough??
This is chock full of feels regarding unfulfilled want and desire, while giving us good shifter claiming and possessiveness. Top it with lots of fun and funny with plenty of kid adorable-ness and this recipe is pretty close to perfect.
I know I’m probably (most likely) being entirely unreasonable in what I desire in all of Cochet’s stories but this embodied the spirit of THIRDS (though it precedes Dex and company) and I’m not ashamed to say that that's what I enjoy most from this author.
Full of humor but never shirking on the feels, this take on shifter lore was interesting and different. I’m only sad that this series is unfinished and we may never get a good conclusion since Cochet is definitely busy with many many other things. However, in and of itself, it’s a great free story!! Enjoy!
Edit: 24/4/15. Re-read: upping rating to 4.25 stars (original rating 3.75) because after reading second time around realised just how great this story is for a freebie! Plus had a better handle this time round on the characters and their parts in the story. Loved it!
Up to now all the LHNB stories that GR have given us as ' tasters ' before the big event have been really good and Charlie's story is no exception. This was a slightly different take on the shifter story and was really cute to begin with and had me smiling at the picture in my head of all these hard, tough shifters turning wimpy when faced with the mutant alien spider that little Robbie is convinced is the face hugger from Aliens and is going to lay eggs in all their stomachs! LOL. That was a great hook to the story and it pulled me in straightaway.
At times I got a little confused around the characters and their relationships because there are a lot of them packed in the one short story but having said that it was compelling enough to make me push through that to see what was going to happen in the end.
I think there's great scope for a longer novel and it leaves you with the idea that hopefully there could be a sequel dealing with Hunter and Ari's forced separation and if that's the case I'd love to see how that pans out as well as catching up with Trip and Boone and the rest of the pack. Couple of niggles but I think they generally stem from the fact that this is only a short and there's a lot packed in that obviously had to be condensed because of it, and I was a bit disappointed in the showdown at the end, but if this is the start of a possible series then I can sort of understand why it had to be that way . A very enjoyable paranormal tale that's making me look forward to even more great stories in the LHNB event, which on the strength of what I've read up to now is looking fab!!
Alright, I'm going to say it. This is MY prompt and I'M SO FREAKING HAPPY WITH IT!
It's not perfect but I laughed so much throughout this book, my cheeks were hurting by the end of the story. I fell in love with these characters, especially Trip. He's a bit melodramatic but his actions and words had me cracking up constantly. I loved that Robbie, Trip's son, has so many traits like his dad and I loved that Boone accepts them like that and even encourages them. Boone is so big and burly but he's definitely playful!
More than that, this book was a lot of fun for me. I've been in a huge funk lately and I needed something that would make me laugh, was cute with just enough conflict to give the story substance and this was that story. It was a cute, sweet story about forbidden love with a great cast of characters and a great twist in the end! Hunter and Ari were breaking my heart but I can't wait to read their story! Definitely recommended for those who enjoy cute, playful shifters.
Where do I begin? Seriously I’m completely lacking in the words to explain just how wonderful this story is.
OK Lets give this a try.
This has the funniest starting chapter I have ever read. Seriously if you can read the first chapter without snickering out loud, well then you seriously are lacking a sense of humour. I can not get over how funny I found the beginning.
Robbie is now vying for top spot in my most wonderful kids list. This little guy is seriously awesome. Not since a certain Dragon named Tori have I felt such devotion. Robbie is the most adorable and yet totally believable 7 year old. He really brings this story to life.
The chemistry/romance between Boone and Tris is beautiful. They act like best friends, but at the same time you can feel the love they share. The way they rough house around and insult each other is perfect, and best of all, not a giggle amongst them.
This is a shifter fic with a different spin. I loved the way the mating was handled. None of that “sniff oooh mate mine lets have lots of sex” going on here. Instead there are deeper things going on. The council theme is handled well, and was an exciting climax.
When I started this story I never for a moment thought I would need any tissues, except maybe from tears of laughter, but I was wrong. Robbie made me cry with his heart felt plea. Talk about out of the mouth of babes. He really is wonderful.
Now my niggle lol. When is the next story available? Seriously if ever a series needs to be written its this one. Not only do I need Hunters story, (again I needed tissues for Ari), I need a regular fix on Robbie and his amazing family.
A beautiful love story wrapped up in humour with just enough drama to give it an edge. This is a full 5 stars plus for me.
ETA
nothing I can add second time around. Still as funny and still as heartbreaking at the end. But finally I can jump straight into Hunter and Ari's story

PHOTO DESCRIPTION: An adorable picture shows a man with short, light brown hair wearing a black T-shirt and jeans, holding his large, dark gray and white Husky in his arms. The Husky’s ears are flattened back and his paws are on the man’s shoulders. The picture’s tag reads: OMG Dad kill it. I swear it was as big as my head! I hate spiders!
Super cute! That first scene/chapter with the spider was a 5 star all the way. Adorable, absolutely hilarious, their banter and relationship between each other and with Robbie (the kid) were perfect. After that it was still good, but I felt some things about their shifter culture were unclear.
The description at the beginning of the story about the history of shifters was really interesting, but it turned out not to really be relevant. Since there were no humans in the story, the shifter-human relationship didn't really need to be explained.
And I was unclear a lot on how close Trip and Boone were. First I thought they secretly loved each other. Then we find out they know they're true mates but can't be together. Then we find out they have been together just can't have full penetration sex... so everyone knows Trip is gay, and even assumed he and Boone were having sex, but no one is allowed to know they're true mates because that's against the rules? That took me a while to figure out.
And to be honest, although sweet, I thought the ending was a tiny bit of a cop out. So that felt a little hypocritical and an unnecessary source of drama for the purpose of setting up the next book. BUT, that being said... I'm really for Hunter's book! :)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This is one of the LHNB stories and the picture prompt of a man holding/hugging a husky was really cute.
The prologue was interesting and set up for what I first thought would be a darker and more intense story about the shifter society. Then the first chapter came and it was cute and funny and light hearted. Trip is a goof and funny and a great dad, Robbie, his son, is way too smart for his own good, he has that whole group of guys and his mom totally under his control. After the mutant alien spider was taken care of ( by Mom after all the fearless men ran screaming) we get to the heart of the story. The council and the Alpha (Trip's dad) have ruled by fear it seems. And to protect each other and Robbie, Trip and his true mate Boone have not bonded, they have loved each other for years but can't act on it, since the results would be disastrous for many. The politicking and all the players can be a bit much, but I think I have them all straight, and I enjoyed the patch work family and how well that worked. It sort of ends on a new beginning and one couple is still in limbo and I hope to get their story soon.
I laughed so hard at one point, I noticed I was clapping. Clapping! WTF? Captain Lame, I am.
Husky shifters… Wha??? I guess I shouldn't be surprised after True Blood made shifters of everyone & everything.
A most enjoyable read, this was. It's my first experience with this author but it certainly won't be the last.
All the MCs are hysterical. Robbie, the son, is a cheeky, manipulative little monster but oh so adorable. Something for everyone-husky clan politics (*snort*… husky politics), unrequited love, forbidden love & a little sap towards the end. I liked the overall message of blazing your own trail & not adhering to antiquated ideologies.
A superb opening to a series. Kudos to Ms. Cochet on expounding so thoroughly on a picture.
Ridiculously silly and tons of fun. Interesting clan dynamics but the abundance of characters was confusing. I tend to prefer a little bit more when it comes to shifting in my shifter stories (guess I have come to recognize there are different categories of shifter books...this one falls in the *boom* category, but I suppose I can't compare all shifters to my favorite in the genre)
I really liked Boone. Trip was great too, but Boone sealed the deal for me. The pup was...a bit much a times, but he made me laugh.
This story turned out to be better than I expected.
I really liked the main idea for this story. It wasn't something I had absolutely never read before, but it was original enough to intrigue me. The whole situation was more complicated and multi-dimensional than I expected from this short story. The world created by the author has a lot of potential.
I also liked the main characters. The situation between them is very interesting and added tension to the story. There was something really heartbreaking about them not being able to be together and having to hide their feelings. However, I don't like children in my books. And unfortunately Robbie irritated me too. He was supposed to be funny, but instead, he was annoying. I definitely preferred the part of the story where there was much less of him.
Probably partly because I'm not a big fan of humor in my books and it wasn't my favorite thing in this book either. The jokes were a little too silly for me. So the beginning of this book irritated me a bit from time to time.
I don't know why, but I didn't expect it to be just the beginning of the whole series. I liked all these characters and am very curious to see what will happen between Hunter and Ari. I will probably read another book in this series one day.
I enjoyed the heck outta this story. It was way funnier than I was expecting it to be, providing me with more than a few laugh out loud moments. It was also sweet, sexy, and original. Most of all, I loved the dynamics between the main characters, Trip and Boone, and the secondary characters Robbie, Deacon, Brook, and Hunter. They were different, but they meshed so well together and that sense of camaraderie and easy joy between them really made this story for me.
However, I do agree with some of the other reviews that said that the world-building/shifter mythology of this story sometimes seemed unclear; maybe this was because Cochet was trying to pack (Pack! Ha! Unintentional shifter pun for the win!) too much mythology into such a short story. Still, I'm really looking forward to more from this series.
My thanks to Cochet for participating in the Love's Landscapes event and for all of the behind-the-scenes work that editors, beta readers, and the MM Group Mods put into making this FREE event a massive success!
I loved the core characters and the humour present in this shifter story - the hairy mutant spider and the various reactions to it were particularly hilarious.
I could have done with more of the general world-building. The shifter lore was a bit vague in parts and towards the end there were way too many characters to keep track of, making some scenes quite confusing.
Ultimately, this was another enjoyable shifter story by Cochet and I look forward to reading the sequel.
Love, love, loved this book! The characters captured me from the first, I mean Robbie is just so adorable. And who can't love a group of men unable to deal with alien spiders and their freakishness? First book I've read by this author and I'm so glad I did. I will check out her other works.. Can't wait to read more in this series in particular.
Trip was born to be the alpha of his pack, a pack rife with history and one that holds to all the old ways. But when he found his mate at 15 he knew that was never going to be possible. His pack would never accept him claiming his male mate. So he gave up the position to his younger brother. Then it was discovered his brother was sterile. Trip was pressed into duty for his pack and knowing he could never have the one he really wanted he married and had his son. Finding out Brook had a true mate out there changed everything yet again. Trip stood up to his pack, declared he was gay, and stepped aside. Now they all have an uneasy truce. Brook is with her mate, and their son happily bounces between their households. Trip and Boone still can’t be together, but at least they can spend time together and are accepted by their close friends.
Boone knows he can never have what he really wants. The pack would never accept him as Trip’s mate even if he wasn’t an Enforcer. As a half-breed he’s considered less in their eyes. It’s painful to be able to be with his love, but never to truly be with them. If the pack was to discover that they were true mates there would be no way for Trip to keep Robbie away from his own father. They would be forced out of the pack. There seems to be no real hope to change their status quo.
Ok so first of all this is a great shifter story. I like the way that Ms. Cochet has built this society, the emphasis on tradition and the reluctance to change adds a lot of innate drama. Still I feel like there’s so much more to discover about the history of this world.
The characters here were fabulous as well. I adored Trip and Boone. The amount of forbearance they’ve had to resist each other all these years is incredible. You could really feel the tension and love between these two. And when it finally broke, wow, um yeah, please! These two have so much chemistry between them. Also, the rest of their friends and family are just awesome as well. Super fun characters that made me chuckle repeatedly. I loved the relationships between them all. Each character was very distinct and I can’t wait to read Hunter and Ari’s story!
Even though you know where this story has to build to, the confrontation between Trip and his father, the means of that confrontation were extremely unexpected. It didn’t even enter my mind that the solidifying of Boone and Trip’s bond would have such profound effects. It’s always nice when an author can surprise me.
Finally the humor here is bloody amazing! It kept me giggling throughout and I just wanted to cuddle Robbie. The bonds of love here were just so apparent and it made for an environment where snark could be appreciated without rancor. Unless of course it’s being delivered in pithy ripping comments at some of the asshole-ish dickheads that were part of the opposition. Jerkfaces! I loved the banter and dialog in this story so much.
Altogether the writing was extremely well done, the characters were engaging, and the story sucked you in. I was rooting for Boone and Trip all the way.
The writing in this story is excellent. There are many laugh-out-loud lines throughout (I love humor in romance). I enjoyed the story-building around mating vs true mates, metamorphosis, etc. I'm impressed by the author and will look for more of her work.
The only reason it's not a 5 star for me is 1) I'm not that into shifter/paranormal books. I read this story as part of the LHNB event. Obviously that is not the fault of the author since the blurb makes it clear it's a shifter book. and 2) It felt like it was part of a larger series or universe that I was not privy to. I had the feeling the main characters--Trip and Boone--had had a previous story. Even though the backstory was incorporated in a clear way, it still felt a little like I'd picked something up mid series.
Still excellent and, if you like shifter stories, you'll love it
What a magnificent book. It has everything I like in a shifter story. There are fated mates who struggle to come together. There is an evil alpha, who has no morals and will do anything to remain in control. The entire pack is overseen by a power-hungry council where one member is more bigoted and nasty than the next. And the two main characters have tried so hard to do the “right thing”, only to find that there comes a point when enough is enough. Oh, and there are some mysterious laws and ancient secrets to top it all off. Add a cute kid who is wiser than many of the adults, a few supportive family members some of whom struggle with issues of their own, and a sense of humor that made me laugh out loud. This is a seriously good story with wonderful characters and a lot of potential for several sequels to come.
Trip is a Husky shifter with serious issues. Dare I mention spiders? One of the best scenes I have ever read and a hilarious recurring theme! But I digress. Trip has already done several unthinkable things – at least as far as his father and the council are concerned - when the story starts. He has come out as gay, he has divorced his wife, and yet he managed to keep his son Robbie with him. Trip has spent twenty years knowing his true mate is his enforcer, Boone, but he knows they’ll never be able to be together. Or at least he thinks he knows since Fate clearly has a different idea.
Boone loves Trip with everything he has, but he has accepted they can never be together openly, nor can they seal the bond without endangering their lives. He has learned to enjoy the few stolen moments they can spend together, more like friends than lovers, but he believes it is all they have. What he hadn’t counted on is his feral side having different ideas, and after twenty years of restraint, it takes over and sets in motion a chain of events that surprises everyone. The council is disgusted as old truths come to light, they find unexpected allies who help them make up their minds, and their future suddenly looks very different than they expected.
If you like shifter stories and finding out the rules of a new paranormal world, if two men who seem fated to never be able to be together catch your imagination, and if you’re looking for a read that is as emotional and hot as it is hilarious and surprising, then you will probably like this free novella as much as I did. I can’t wait to read the next installment!
This was a really fun and entertaining shifter book! I loved both Boone and Trip and the fact that Trip wasn't a typical Alpha shifter character. Yes he was alpha but he was very different. Kind of geeky is some ways, very outgoing and humorous. I really enjoyed Boone as well and thought the two fit really well together. I liked the fact that the traditions of the shifter society and reluctance to change their ways added the drama and emotion to this story. The chemistry between Boone and Trip was amazing and when they finally gave in - WOW! The secondary characters were also a lot of fun. I loved the relationship Trip had with his ex-wife and her mate and between Boone and his brother Hunter.
This book also had some unexpected turns that surprised me and I love when that happens. I didn't see the ramifications between Trip and Boone solidifying their bond and I thought it was really well written and plotted. I think the thing I loved the most though was the humor! From the opening scene with the spider and throughout this book I just found myself laughing. The wit and banter was funny and engaging.
This is my first book by this author but it will certainly not be my last. I'm off to see what else I can find by this author and of course to get Hunter and Ari's book!
Great beginning to a book. Too freaking funny...a spider. This was unbelievable good especially considering it was a free read. I want Robbie! Now we just have to wait for the next book which better be Hunter's story. Just sayin'.
As the Alpha's firstborn, Trip is supposed to produce an heir. Since he's gay, he's more than happy to let his younger brother take on that honor. However, once it becomes obvious that his brother is sterile, Trip resigns himself to fulfill his duty. Seven years later, he's co-parenting his son with his ex-wife while trying to work around the fact that he will never be able to bond with his true mate. Pack law states that no pure blooded Huskie shifter can ever be a half-breed's mate. But then, some rules are meant to be broken...
I still don't know how a novel with so much promise got so wonky. Shifter romances have their own kind of charm so I was ready to have fun when I settled down with this story.
What I liked
+ The first 3 or so chapters were funny.
Although a few of the scenes could be read as a little too sitcom-y (such as the spider situation), most of it was very adorable.
+ A few of the scenes featuring shifter antics were a blast to read.
They were playful and, yes, even cute.
+ Brook was one awesome character.
The fact that she was a woman got a thumb's up from me. She was strong without veering off into stereotypes while still being very relatable.
What I didn't like
- The villains were weak as hell.
A great villain elevates an OK plot to a good, perhaps even amazing, one. It's not that the villain has to be so OTT that they go from scary to buffoon-like. What I mean is that you want to feel the relief and victory the protagonist feels after defeating said villain.
Sadly, the main villain (Trip's father) wasn't scary. The book tried to make a case for how evil he was--which resulted in a lot of telling but not enough showing. I'm guessing that Cochet might've wanted to make him menacing by having Trip and the rest of the character talk about all of his dastardly deeds.
All that ended up doing was to make me go "Him? He's the Big Bad? Are you SURE?" when he finally showed up.
The rest of the crew were petty and bigoted. I wasn't impressed, let alone worried for any kind of dark outcome.
- Trip and Boone are star-crossed lovers, I guess?
Trip and Boone are each other true mates. It's no secret that they love each other (though, supposedly, Trip's Dad and his Legion of Hatemonger Incompetents were totes unaware of this. That's how idiotic they were).
In what turned out to be a strange early reveal, Trip and Boone were already sleeping with each other! But none of those times counted because they were not bonded to each other. This basically made me give them, the story, and Cochet herself EPIC EYEROLLS OF ANNOYANCE.
AND THEN,
- Robbie
He was too precocious for a 7-year old. Also way too bratty, imho.
- Here's a character and there's another and another and...
I lost count of how many characters were around by the time this book started to wrap up the story. It was the big showdown so I'm guessing that everyone and their mama decided to make an appearance.
In all truth, some of it was set-up for the sequel (something I figured out after reading the blurb for that novel), but the level of randomness was pretty high by that time.
TL;DR: Once again, Cochet can't stick the fraking landing. What had begun as a fluffy story soon became unnecessarily try-hard. Not only I'm unable to recommend this book, I am done with this author.
There were some very nice parts in this. Very funny.
But unfortunately the story was way too complicated for such a short book.
The basics: Trip is a husky shifter, with a 7 year old son. He has known his true mate is one of the enforcers of the pack, Boone, since he was 15. They can’t be together because of some old stories that the alpha (Trip is the son of the current alpha) can never mate with an enforcer. Honestly, I still don’t get that part.
What bothered me most was that Trip and Boone were already in love when this story started. They had accepted they could never bond, but had the occasional hand job here and there. They also had no trouble telling each other they loved one another. The rest of the story was just more plot than romance. Not a lot of development in the romance department and that made me sad. The guys were kind of already there when this book started. There wasn’t even the pining I was expecting.
The photo was just LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY, and the prompt definitely piqued my interest (awesome Nikyta!), then I found out it was by Charlie Cochet...I had to read this immediately.
Lately, men with children and family themed stories are at the forefront of my reading picks, and there are many of which I have fallen in love with. This story-which is going to be the start of a series (YAY!)-is at the top of the list.
Romance and comedy are the highlight of the story for me, the strong love between Trip and Robbie and the rest of their little family is so heartfelt. I admire that though it feels that Trip and Boone might not get their happy ever after, they try to make the best of the situation. But that when the reasons and motivations that drive the council are revealed he and Robbie (such a strong little man) make a stand, no longer willing to bow to his father and the clan.
A great start to what I know will be a wonderful series, and I for one am seriously looking forward for more of these lovely character's antics. Now about those fugly spiders...
The start of Love has no Boundaries and this one is very cute about husky shifters.
The humor, well a little much for me but humor is subjective. We're told Trip is an alpha but mostly he acts like an overgrown puppy. And he's a got little one of his own, Robbie, who runs circles around him. It made me want to say shape up, you're his dad not his buddy. The whole lot of them were so undisciplined I'd probably have sent them all to obedience school.
There's quite a lot of characters for a short story so it's hard to keep track of them. But Tristan's mate is an enforcer named Boone, but mixing together is forbidden so they keep it secret.
World building was decent enough although some holes need to be filled. Obviously this one is a set up for a future series and possibly Hunter & Ari's story. Nice one if you're looking for a light shifter story.
LNHB story for the M/M Romance group Really nice shifter story with a lot of humour, a like-able smart mouthed child and the excellent fugly mutant spiders!
(minor niggle from pedantic dog owner who gets hung up on silly little points..... I think the picture is an Alaskan Malamute not a husky.... not that really matters!)
If you like Big bad boys, who fear no one,can kill in a blink but putty in hands of a seven-year-old with a puppy dog eyes, squirm seeing a big spider. This book is for you. Short, sweet fun read with characters you will fall in love at the first scene.Yum
THere is very little I can say bad about this book. It's funny, sexy, and fulfilling. The problems are overcome and the bastards put in their place. Well written.
