Ember Jacobs is a Deviant, a genetically modified human with the ability to control fire. For years her race has been kept secret from the rest of the world, but a powerful woman threatens to expose them all.

Ember and her partner Selena Quincy, another Devi, are brought to the scene of a dead Devi, but they can’t find any visible signs of how the man died. It appears that his life and his abilities were sucked from him. Both women are sent out to find a girl who holds the key to the future of the Deviant race. But they’re not alone in seeking her out.

I'm not much of an urban fantasy reader, but I do read anything with Winter Austin's name on it because I love her voice so much.
Ember kicks ass! The world of the Devis is familiar, yet unique. Set in a not-too-distant future Detroit, Ember's a cop with the ability to control fire. There's a giant thriller/suspense thread running through this little novella, promising more thrills to come with future installments. Winter's forte is cops and this story took her action scene skills to a whole new level.
And then there's the men of the Devis. Wow! I can't wait for more installments. So many characters to learn about.

Ember is a Deviant. Part of a genetically altered race with powers beyond anyone's imagination. She's hot on the trail of a young girl who leaches the life from people. The question is: does she intend to kill the people she comes into contact with. Can this girl be Ember's future?
Similar to the X-Men stories, readers of this type of fiction will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.
