USA Today bestselling author of the Heroes of Henderson Series.
Liz's Heroes of Henderson series grew out of the New Year's Eve Anthology, Countdown To A Kiss, where the Devine Sisters of Henderson, N.C. had a bet every year at their parents' New Year's Eve ball. The sister who didn't have a date to kiss at midnight had to kiss their nerdy neighbor, Lewis Kampmueller.
Duncan James, the hero of Liz's novella in Countdown To A Kiss (which has also been published separately as Playin' Cop) is not only best friends with Lewis, but with both Brooks Bennett and Vance Evans, his fraternity brothers from NC State. Brooks and Vance are the Henderson cops who kick off the series with Good Cop and Bad Cop.
Recurring characters is the theme of the Henderson series. Each book is a complete romance in and of itself, but you won't lose touch with the couples you fall in love with. They keep playing big parts and small in following books as Brooks and Vance lead Team Henderson in finding ways to revive their small town.
"DuVal Cousin" books are an additional part of the Heroes of Henderson series, and usually are tucked in between books with numbers like 2.5 and 3.5. They can be full length novels or short novellas, and they are based on Lolly DuVal's (from Good Cop) Henderson cousins. Where the Heroes books are hero-centric, the DuVal Cousin books are heroine based.
Henderson is an actual town in North Carolina where some of Liz's favorite people were raised. Liz's version of Henderson is completely fictional since she hasn't had the pleasure of going back in nearly thirty years. But oh the fun she had while visiting there in her youth. Her memories are the perfect landscape for her contemporary romances.
Liz enjoys putting friends and readers in cameo appearances in her books. Originally from Baltimore, she spent every summer near Annapolis, Maryland in a community where dancing and romancing are literally part of its theme song. (The place where Jesse James gets banished from in Bad Cop. There is going to be a series about that place someday.)
A graduate of Wake Forest University, where she met her handsome golf-addicted husband, (who is now sporting dark glasses everywhere he goes) Liz is a mother of two grown sons (also sporting dark glasses) and a miniature Labradoodle named Isabelle. They live in the Fountain of Youth, a.k.a. Naples, FL where dancing and romancing continues on ad infinitum.
The Heroes of Henderson Series in order: Playin' Cop (or Countdown To A Kiss if you want the whole story.) Good Cop Bad Cop Taming Molly Top Dog Tempting Vivi Kissing Cooper ~ A Christmas Quickie Under Dog (Coming soon.)

Rating: 2 stars (It was going to be a 4 star book for me until the change of events described below)
This book is about a girl who wants two guys and doesn't feel any need to choose one, but pretends like she's only dating one. Why have one when you can have them both? This was an interesting spin on a love triangle. Both guys want the girl and they are best friends. It kind of has that feel of "well if she chooses you, then I will just have to live with it." One is a good guy (hence the title) and the other hates women and just uses them for sex. It seems like a hard choice, doesn't it? Well it is for Lolly (seriously, that name). She knows Vance doesn't like women, but he's sexy so... it's all good, right? The other guy, Brooks, is a good guy that's apparently afraid of being boring. They throw in the word milquetoast in the beginning and proceed to beat a horse to death with it. It becomes a theme that Brooks couldn't possibly keep Lolly's interest and/or love if he's ever boring and nice. And Vance attempts to befriend Lolly so he can prove that he doesn't hate women. But he's not a very good friend. My guy friends never smacked me on the ass, kissed me, or made constant lewd suggestions. Yeah yeah, he's supposed to be turning over a new leaf or whatever, but his best friend is dating this girl and he has no problem doing all this stuff to and with her. Because she is a willing participant.
This brings us to Lolly. Brooks is focused on her young age quite a bit. He's worried she's not ready (he's looking for a wife), etc. And he's right. She's incredibly immature and a jerk and I don't like her. I was actually okay with this story until about the 75% mark. I thought it was going to be a 4 star read, but then things happened to make me change my whole opinion of the book.
I liked Brooks. He was the only good person in this love triangle. Lolly and Vance were selfish assholes. Brooks deserved better than Lolly and I was sad to see them get together. The next book in this series is called Bad Cop and is Vance's story. I just don't think I can read about him. I don't give a shit if he's good in bed. He's just... yuck.
I didn't even cover the other couple in this story: Lolly's mom and Vance's dad. This was kind of a weird addition because they get a good amount of screen time in the story, but it's not for anything but sex scenes. Oh that's another thing. There is a lot of sex in this story. A lot. It's well-written sex, but there's so much of it that it leaves me wondering if there just wasn't enough story so it was filled with gratuitous amounts of sex. The mom and dad's sex scenes didn't feel like they were necessary to the story at all. Just an excuse to add more graphic smut? I don't know.
Having said all that mean stuff about the characters and the choices they made, the writing of this story is good. I don't think the author's intention was to make me hate her characters, but her writing was good enough that it gave me strong emotions nonetheless. They just weren't for me. I also love this little town of Henderson. I enjoyed the novella before this, which is what I read first and made me continue on to this story. So it's not the author or her writing. It's these particular characters that I can't stand. I will be trying another of her books. Just not the Bad Cop one because I will want to smack the shit out of Vance the whole time. Her writing is the only reason this book is a 2 star and not a 1 star.
Reread? No.

Lolly is caught between two handsome cops. One is considered the golden boy and good cop, the other, a bad boy and bad cop. She needs to teach one a few bad boy ways and the other how to truly appreciate a woman…outside of sex. A big complication is the fact that they're best friends and want the same woman. She's decided for the time being, she'll just take them both!
I adored Good Cop! It kept me laughing from beginning to end and fanning myself at the same time. Whoa, I loved the dialog between the characters, the sexy men and their byplay, and the many sizzling-hot moments I just couldn't get enough of. This is my first book in the Henderson series and you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be reading them all! Ms. Kelly writes her heroes exactly the way I love them…those bad-boy attitudes, full-on sexy looks and build, they're playful, possessive, heroic and romantic. Her lines of conversation between the characters are expertly written and thrill me to no end. I heat up, laugh-out-loud, and just can't get enough! If you don't take the time to read Ms. Kelly's books, I'd have to say you're just plain out of your mind (lol)! DON'T MISS THIS SERIES! I guarantee you there WILL be sizzling-hot heroes included… 5 Stars!
This is a fun sexy read that had me laughing out loud. With a strange little love triangle going on, Lolly DuVal has more male attention then she knows what do with. Brooks and Vance are best friends and now they both have their eye on the lovely Ms. DuVal. Brooks has always had a thing for Lolly but the age difference made him stay away. Well she's all grown up now and he's determined to make her his. Vance has issues with women. Outside the bedroom anyway. Lolly agrees to help him learn to appreciate women even when sex isn't involved. Vance finds himself unexpectedly attracted to Lolly but what about Brooks?? Who will win her heart, Good Cop Brooks or Bad Cop Vance??
My 1st read, written by Liz Kelly. I have never laughed so much, I think there are lots of other men and ladies who could really use this program (that is what I am picking to call it?) being able to work with a person from the opposite sex as them to understand or how/why they are are the way they are... to learn how to work together. Maybe it is like being like a great listener without judging, we could all use that. But I think you really have to set a guideline ... why I often wonder if men and ladies can be friends? you gotta keep things from going over that line .. don't get sexual or kisses-y face and all. Honesty is always the best policy. Glad I finally check out Liz's writing. yes, there are 5 books in the series, got check those out. Loved this read. Such a great read!!! ( ;
I loved this book right from the beginning as Brooks and Vance drew me in. Liz Kelly gets guy talk and the pair felt very real and believable. The heroine Lolly is caught in a love triangle between the two—one bad cop and one good cop—but it’s always clear which one she’s meant to be with. Can’t wait to read Bad Cop!
I really loved this from beginning to end, there were a few places I thought get on with it already but the author put a new twist on it that had me hook. The best part is the humor and the pull between them, the chemistry is wonderful, the passion hot. It was a fun read that had be laughing out loud not only at what was going on but at the characters their selves for the mess they made, the misunderstanding and the pull of a friendship that could have been more.
Mr. Lawrence prefect job in the narration of this book, he really brings the characters to life. You could feel the pain, confusion, love, lost, happy, sad and angry in his voice which really make it more realistic for me. If any breaks where taken you cannot tell, the volume stayed nice and even with no places where it was higher or lower than others. You have no trouble understanding what each character is feeling or who is talking. He has wonderful character voices from his female to his male. I thought his voice was very contemporary to the characters and the story line giving each character just the right touch with emotion, tone, volume as he gives a wonderful compelling listen. He has a wonderful voice that you have no trouble listening to for hours. I found things to do so I could listen long and was disappointed when the story came to an end. I am very much looking forward to listening to his narration in the rest of this series.
The author gives you a wonderful story you have no trouble relating to as she spells a very believable tale of a women coming home to do a projects for college and the cops who needs her help one who has loved her from a far for many years the other a playboy who needs to learn how to be friends first and lovers last. This cause much conflict between them, their friends and family.
Brooks and Vance are best friends Brook has always had the lovely Lolly in his sights for many years but with her being his sisters best friend and years younger he decided she might need some growing before he took matters into his own hands. Once seeing her again after so many years he is more than ready to stake his claim. Vance being the love them leave them kind of guy full of one night stands with women he can’t stand needs a little help learning not only to pick the correct type of women but to maybe get to know her first before jumping into bed. He is a big flirt with all the right moves to move a women right into his bed no questions ask. I thought I would die laughing as he gives pointers to Brook and where get got all his information from. There were times I really wanted to shake Brook for always trying to do the right thing he is always the good cop. I truly understood where Vance was coming from with Lolly being the first women he really ever got to know it isn’t hard to believe he would fall hard and fast for her. Things do get a little heated and out of control with them which really puts a hurting on poor old Brook. It is any ones guess whether he will take this laying down or if he will get the balls to fight back. Little old Lolly is stuck right in the middle trying to love them both in different ways it is any ones guess who she will fall for if either she is just home for the summer looking for a hot fling. It really doesn’t look good for either one of them. There is heartbreak in this story that will really pull on your heart. There will be times you will just want to set and cry for one or the other. Each are just plain stupid at times for not seeing things and asking too much of one person. Most of all you will laugh yourself silly at the wonderful plots this author brings to the story. Each character is better than the last keeping you smiling from Lolly’s mother to Vance’s father and all of them in between they are just cute and at times very funny. Just wait until you meet Vance’s grandmother and the things that come out of her mouth will may you die laughing. There were places I just about wet myself laughing so hard.
If you are looking for a light funny read that keeps you entertained with a wonderful plot and characters you will fall totally in love with you have found it. I do hope you will pick up this audio or at least this book. This looks to be a wonderful outstanding series I can’t wait to sink my eyes in again. Oh yes watch out for those handcuffs LOL.
I started out liking this book. I like Liz Kelly's writing and it funny and enjoyable. I had previously read playin cop and so moved on to this. However this book really pissed me off over time. Lolly really kept ping ponging between Vince and Brooks and seemed clueless about what she was doing. Didn't make me feel she was very mature. I honestly didn't see what Brooks saw in her and think she would have been better off with Vince. Brooks deserved better. What really pissed me off was the tennis match I really wish Liz had Lolly and Vince get together. Let Brooks find a better gal. I was very disappointed in this. And I really didn't bother reading bad cop because I got such a bad taste in my mouth. Don't read this as a first book. I would have been happier if it was a ménage - at least then they wouldn't have been such dicks to Brooks.
I received an ARC for this book, but I almost didn't want to read it. I do NOT like that whole two-guys-competing-for-the-same-woman trope. I've been down that road before in a different series and was beyond pissed when I figured it out...and it was a cliffhanger! No cliffhangers here but I did struggle with this book. I loved Brooks, I liked Lolly and Vance...but I also hated Lolly and Vance. See my dilemma? Possible spoilers to follow....
By making Lolly clueless and slightly obtuse to Brooks feelings, the author shows how young Lolly is compared to Brooks, not so much in years but in experience and where she is in her life. Vance is a selfish as s and I'm sorry, but because he had a bad break as a child, I'm suppose to forgive his screwing over his best friend? The guy Vance knows will do anything for anyone....so it's okay in Vance's mind to get in the way of Brooks and Lolly?! I call foul!!
I gave this book 4 stars for the writing, the secondary characters and Brooks. I want to give 1 star to Vance and 3 to Lolly (I gave her a break because of her age and the fact that she really didn't see until the end that she was a total moron to Brooks...even though she never apologized....grrrrr) I'll read the next book to see if anyone redeems themselves and to visit some other great characters (like DArcy and Duncan).
I have received a gifted copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book by Liz. I have really enjoyed Playin Cop, but in here I'm a bit confused. I don't mind the whole triangle, where 2 guys want one girl. Sometimes I really like especially where there is more laugh than drama, but here I was not so happy.
Vance was not my favourite character and Lolly was sometimes annoying ;) but I loved Brooks. He is funny and so much is going around him.
I loved the secondary characters, especially Duncan from previous part, where I basically fell in love with him.
Either way the book is really worth reading and I can't wait for the next part as I want to know what will happen to the rest of the characters!
I absolutely loved this book! Best thing I've read in weeks! I found myself laughing out loud repeatedly, so I had to be careful where I was reading. The characters are great and I will be reading all the others in this series as soon as possible.
Amazing romantic story. The excitement as I read just kept building. The camaraderie of the characters catch you up in the story and you can't put the book down. I kept laughing out loud so much, my husband said "must be a good book". It is! Can't wait for the next one!
First time reading this author....I will be reading all of her work from her on! Great story with wonderful character development! I love a HEA especially one that has other characters you fall I love with!
I like small town settings: the struggle that characters experience in changing or altering their direction and personalities, not to mention gentle nudges to potential couples does often come into play. Brooks and Vance have never left town: and have managed to continue that childish competition from high school and macho posing into adulthood: even if the time for this is gone.
Brooks’ intentions are to make Henderson somewhere people WANT to be, and he truly is, in many regards, a throwback to a simpler time. Vince is actually a bit more stuck in the high school mentality, and never met a woman he wouldn’t make a play for.
Lolly is back in Henderson for the summer, there are decisions to be made, and she’s ripe for a summer fling. It’s safe back home, and who knows, with two of the hottest men in town…..
This is a pure candyfloss read, enjoyable and light, with a perfect mix of humor and steam, with low angst at the core. Brooks was completely developed and came forward as a solid character. Vance was more of a prototypical stuck in high school in thought, act and deed sort, and really had few redeeming features, with his competitive streak (it’s a girl –not a ball) most annoying. And Lolly – clueless and rather callous, not intentionaly but a thoughtless streak (and lack of remorse that extended to an apology) were her constant companions. I thought that Brooks could do better, but he seems to like (and expect) a level of immaturity from his friends and lovers.
Narration for this story was provided by Charles Lawrence, the second title from him I’ve listened to. His work is wonderfully skilled, nuances and changes in delivery, pitch and tone clearly present each character’s part in the story, care is taken to alow listeners to absorb moments of import, and there was no over-acting or overreach for Lolly’s voice. Clearly skilled, his performance added to the story.
Overall – this isn’t a bad story: it’s light, it’s fun and everyone has met their own fair shares of Lollys and Vances. Brooks was the standout character in this story, with his solid ties to honorable behavior and a palpable sense of wanting to do the right thing. It’s a summer fling of a title, clever, intriguing, enjoyable and fun.
I received an AudioBook copy of the title from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility. This review was originally posted on I am, Indeed
I love to read, it’s my biggest vice and greatest joy. With the utter crap I’ve come across lately, mixed in with some mediocre reads and a few decent stories, I hadn’t held out high hopes for this book. I was so wrong. From the very beginning, the author caught my attention with the sexual tension created. The characters were well developed and likable. I must also point out that while the sexual attraction was present throughout this fun tale, and it was by no means clean, the story was what drew me in. It was humorous, entertaining and just plain enjoyable. It’s been a long while since I’ve found myself so enamored with the side characters that I want to read their HEA. Kudos on a well written book. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good story piled high with sex appeal and a large dose of sexual chemistry. I can’t wait to read Bad Cop.
I lived this story of two friends who find themselves needing to find that perfect woman to settle down with. The good cop aka Brooks Bennet has his picked out long before he was even in college. He just needed to nail her down before she decided that she didn’t want to settle back down in their hometown. Then there was Vance Evans the playboy of Henderson who had no idea what he wanted but knew he couldn’t stand to be around women no longer than getting them in his bed. The girl in the story one Leigh ‘Lolly’ DuVal knew she only loved one person but she was intrigued by his best friend but not in the way everyone else seen it. She knew since she was a kid that she loved only one person and that was Brooks Bennet. This story has a lot of twists and turns and it’s great learning about all the characters of Henderson and what love really means to people who wait long enough for someone to grow up and fulfill three destiny.
I really wanted to give this five stars. You have no clue. This book was cute and sexy with tons of drama. I love Brooks. He was sexy smart driving and dedicated as well as loyal. Lolly was such an adorable little mess of trouble but she definitely rounded out Brooks. Vance was such a great character to add into the mix. I just wish it had been a more definitive line drawm when she picked Brooks. I know shes young and flirty but shes a little too aloof. All in all a great read. Some minor grammatical things as well as vance knowing Davis (the ex) name in the beginning. I know its an oversight but that bugged me to no end all throughout the book. Id read again and i plan to read the rest of the series.
I like reading romance but I am not a fan of ongoing steamy love scenes. Although Good Cop was not a sweet romance, I did enjoy it. I haven't read many love triangles so I enjoyed that this book wasn't the "same old, same old." This book is also a sister's best friend story which is my favorite trope. I liked that besides the 3 main twenty-somethings, there was also an older couple in a relationship. I thought that the secondary characters brought a lot to the story. The next book, Bad Cop, is Vance's story which should be fun.
This read is heart warming and halirous. Lolly DeVal finds herself in the midst of a pretty funny love triangle when she agrees to help Brooks and Vance. I literally couldn't put the book down! In fact I picked up the audible version for those times I want to reread it and don't have free hands ;) Fantastic read! An intriguing storyline with well developed and relatable characters!! Not to mention a fantastic book one for a lovely time in Henderson :D
Short review. Slight spoilers. This book could have been four stars but I didn't like how the conflict between the three main characters was handle. I wanted to see Brooke stand up for himself not quickly forgive Vance and Lolly for their behavior that they knew was harming their individual respectable relationship with Brooke. If there had been some groveling from Vance and Lolly and promises that they will never behave that way again with each other I might have given it four stars.
I had fun listening to this audio book. I imagined myself in the lead role. I would love to have two guys pursuing me, especially when in a non-threatening situation. All of the characters were entertaining. I found myself chuckling several times. If looking for a quick, fun, read, I recommend this book.
Funny, snarky, southern romance with a happy ending.
He's almost thirty when the girl he's been in love with returns to their home town for the summer. She's looking for a summer fling before finishing college, but he's got forever in mind because he's been in love with her for a long time, too long. He sees his chance and goes for it.
Constant use of God's name in vain dropped this three stars. The other was because I save five stars for books that I thoroughly enjoy. I only finished this heap because I power through all crap books (don't like a DNF pile), but use of God's name is enough to keep me from buying any more of her books, and I certainly won't recommend them.
He’s a good cop living in his hometown. He’s a really good guy focused on becoming mayor and helping revitalizing his hometown, but she’s home from school and he’s loved her for years....
Absolutely Spectacular, Amazing, AWESOME. First time read for this author and I love her! Burst out laughing a few times through out the story, not just once, or twice. Strong characters, very detailed descriptions and the interaction between the characters.
I don't know where it how I found this book but I'm just glad I did!!! This book had me laughing out loud like busting out with tears ;). It is very well written. I couldn't out it down ;) I'm ready for us next book!!!
This book was such a fun read. Great characters, awesome story, engaging! Not only did Brooks and Lilly have a great story but the side characters kept it fun and interesting also. Can’t wait for Vance’s story!
Entertaining read, although I'm usually not a big fan of love triangles. The bromance between Brooks and Vance was great, but I think my favorite part of the book was the secondary romance with Lolly's mom - and of course all the meddling family members and friends!
This book was a delightful, and sometimes very funny love story. I enjoyed the characters and the multi-generation romances. The mystery of guys true reasons for their problems was very interesting. A great story.
