The book seems a little boring after the previous one - I was a little disappointed that we are back in their everyday lives. But I like when Tsutomu Satou uses comparisons to explain magic: for example when he compared one of the magic's processes with computer's OS short cuts or when he explained why Tatsuya needs his senses to cast magic more quickly in a down to earth way. Usually it gets a little dense when reading magic's technical stuff.

Haven't had wi-fi when I was reading it, and now it's been too long and can't remember particulars so my star rating will have to do.

My main complaint about this one is that it stops just when we're about to get answers. Wow, people reading these as they came out must've been going nuts.

Essentially, the Visitors Arc pits our usual cast of characters (minus one) against the theoretically most powerful magical military force in the world, the USNA's Stars, and a pack of vampires. Except, of course, they're not exactly vampires. And the leader of the Stars is hiding in plain sight as an exchange student at First High. Miyuki has a rival worthy of her!

The biggest question for this arc, however, isn't the nature of the vampires or whether Angie Sirius will figure out that Tatsuya was responsible for the hole blown in the planet back in volume 7. No, the big question is: will Erika finally admit that she likes Leo? (Then Mizuki and Miki just have to get organised and all will be right with the world.)

The story starts with explaining how the Americans are worried about events in earlier books, starting a dangerous experiment and sending exchange students over to find out whether or not it was magic and if so which magician cast the spell. Angelina Kudou Shields is send over to Japan as an exchange student, she is also Sirius, the leader of the American magical elite military unit. Things get even more complicated when "vampires" arrive on the scene, killing innocent civilians and triggering a massive hunt in which Tatsuya is drawn because Leo was attacked by one.

As usual the story is brilliant in its world building. Small titbits are revealed at logical places of the story, showing a grim and dark world under a veneer of civility. New characters are carefully introduced or deepened and we get to see the story more from other peoples' perspectives then in previous parts. It also includes some good action scenes and as always I enjoy the magic system. I like how the people are complex, the absence of Japanese light novel/anime trope characters and how the main character has actual male friends. The sister/brother relation might be a bit disturbing, but it fits the world since it seems to be mostly the result of genetic and magical manipulation of both as young children to both increase their magic and to keep them under control.

The ending is a bit abrupt, even though not a cliff-hanger, so I would advice to read all three parts of the arc at the same time. The story can at times also be a bit slowed down by the world building details. I find it a bit odd on the reasoning on why a military force would send soldiers for what is basically the work of a spy. It makes a good story, and fits the idea of ridiculously competent high schoolers (which the author admits is a bit far fetched). It wouldn't have a high chance of success. The conflict between the two factions of Japanese authorities seem a bit odd as well. It seems a bit extreme. There is also relatively little Tatsuya, he is but a bystander at first by design. Still it gives the opportunity to see some of the characters involved in the story.

Still, a great continuation of the story.

Took me a long time to finish this book, but not because I felt the quality had changed compared to the rest of the series. In this book the 'parasites' are front and center, and you spend a long time discovering their nature. This was cool but some of the concepts I had difficulty understanding, unsure if the translated text makes this trickier or if I'm just plane stupid.

Still the content itself was still good quality and I intend to continue with the series.

Overall a great volume although it would have been nice to see more reflecting upon what has happened in yokohoma considering its events.

Having seen the anime before starting the books, reading what happens after Yokohama Disturbance is a very satisfying thing. While Reminiscence was great, seeing the group again back at it was thoroughly enjoyable. And the challenge Lina posed to Tatsuya and Miyuki was refreshing as well.

finally finished after forever. the only saving grace of this book for me was when the action finally picked up around the 70% mark and then the shibacest near the end.

Miyuki's classmate Shizuku Kitayama is on her way to study abroad. For magicians, this is normally impossible, since allowing the genes of someone who can use magic outside their home country's borders is tantamount to giving up national secrets. But it's allowed to happen in one case-exchange programs. And that's how Angelina has arrived in Japan from the USNA to study at First High. But it seems she's a part of something much bigger than a simple cultural exchange!
