This is the first book I've read by Sharon Kleve and although it's the fourth in the series, it does well as a standalone. I didn't need a lot of backstory to understand what was going on in the character's lives.
Corny is a pet detective with a penchant for talking to the animals. A little quirky but her live-in boyfriend Steve loves and accepts her for whom she is. When Steve's ex-girlfriend Celeste arrives in town, Steve tells Corny it's just about the FBI class she is teaching, one he is attending. Corny is insecure about the situation though as she feels Celeste wants Steve back.
There's a lot of witty dialogue, sexy romantic moments and laugh out moments with Corny's pet ferret, Pete. The story is fast paced and with Corny with Jury Duty, it adds an element of frustration to Corny's already bruised security system. Will she realize that Steve loves her, and her alone? Or will she let Celeste get to her and do something she might regret? If you're looking for a sweet romance with a touch of humor, pick up The Ex! It would be perfect to read on the beach this summer!
