A short story introducing sassy and spunky Goldie Locke and her menagerie of magical and rare creatures. Witch Goldie Locke's mission in life is the rescue and rehabilitation of endangered Magical creatures. She will put her life and all she has at risk to save them.
“Well,” I said out loud to nobody in particular, “it’s a lovely day here in Siberia.”
There was no answer, but I wasn’t really expecting one.
I was standing in the middle of nowhere. Literally. My map actually called this place ‘Nowhere’. Of course, the map-- a gift from my deceased father-- did have an exhaustive sense of humor. Or was it exhausting? I could never be quite sure.
Goldie has been following in her father’s footsteps trying to protect the magical animals that are being hunted by poachers. While hunting for a herd of miniature mastodons she arrives at the scene of a brutal attack only to find that one of the females was with a baby. Thanks to her quick thinking she bundles up the little elephant grabs her zombie chicken and portals home. Now she just needs to figure out a way to legally keep her new little foster and protect her from the poachers.
I like Goldie a lot after all she has a zombie chicken as a pet what’s not to love. I love that she’s all about saving the supernatural animals, risking her life to be like her dad. While we are just given just a teaser into who Goldie is she’s already captured my heart and I’m curious to learn more about these Baehr brothers.
I’ve had this one on my kindle forever but never seemed to get around to it. I’m sorry that I waited so long because Baehrly Beginning is an adorable story that captures the heart as well as the imagination. This is the second book by the author that I’ve read and already I’m a quick fan of her story telling it’s beautifully done. Baehrly Beginning is a perfect start to an exciting new series that I can’t wait to check out what’s going to happen with Goldie and her three Baehr’s. The cover is cute a perfect complement to the cute story inside. Highly recommend.
Never read this author prior to this and I am glad I finally took the plunge. This is a nice combination of witchcraft and fairytale for grownups. The characters are familiar in the way that they sound so much like those from the original tale just made them more human and a part of the real world. This is Goldilocks and the Three Bears for the adult set.
This is a short story that introduces us to Goldie Locke who is a sassy and spunky protector of a menagerie of magical and rare creatures. Goldie Locke is a witch whose mission in life is to rescue and rehabilitate endangered magical creatures.
The story starts out slow and actually stays fairly slow throughout but you get a good feel for what the setup is going to be and where the story goes from this point.
Let's just say I'm glad this was free. There's potential for enjoyment here though, and Petunia the pink baby mastodon is so friggin cute I'm tempted to buy the next book just for her.
A fun short read, prequel to the Goldie Locke series. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline was easy to follow. Would like to read the rest of the series
This one I just didn't really connect with like I did with Mrs. Reeves other short story, How (Not) to Play with Magic. But I see that the two worlds are connected as Goldie's twin sisters are Cindy Eller's half twin sisters and I see these two worlds collide in How (Not) to Kiss a Were Bear (Cindy Eller #6) but even though they're connected, I myself just couldn't really connect for some reason. And you don't need to read one or the other to understand the world because they're both different from each other.
I enjoyed Goldie's story, it was interesting but I could easily walk away from it if I wanted to. I know it's a short story but even I felt like the author was rushing herself (or maybe I was just rushing because I haven't finished a story in a long time and I so badly wanted to finish a story) but even so, I found small editing problems (I try not to bring these up sometimes because it happens to everyone, both self-published and traditionally published) but because of them they would kick me out of my reading flow. Also, sometimes I had to reread things because I felt like I missed something, a sign that it didn't quite have me completely hooked. I don't know, I just felt like something was missing.
Overall it was interesting and I enjoyed that Goldie's life is protecting endangered magical creatures, something she learned from her father. And I enjoyed meeting the Baehr brothers, when the receptionist said there was a Goldie Locke asking for them they thought someone was playing a joke on them and that definitely had me laughing out loud haha.
Would I continue reading this series? Maybe, but I'd rather read more of Cindy Eller's world first because that definitely caught my attention more!
This series must be read in order. This is the first book.
I LOVE this prelude to the Goldie series! I thought the introductions to the characters were very good. This book left me wanting more and i think that's what a prequel is for. Too many other authors write prequels with spoilers in them that ruin the rest of the series but Elizabeth A Reeves' prequels are perfect! They get you involved in the characters lives without telling all their secrets... More please! I can't wait to read Baehrly Breathing (Goldie Locke and the Were Bears #1)!
***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy modern fantasy a bit darker than the How (Not) To Series by Reeves with a fractured fairytale vibe and magical mayhem with a dash of romance :)
Loved the introduction that this offered to the rest of the series. Goldie is a wonderful character and the law setting is brilliant. See not all lawyers are blood sucking vampires. Looking forward to the series. Great for all paranormal cozy readers and this coffee break size read is ideal for when you have a few minutes free.
A delightful introduction to Goldie Locke: an Earth witch out to save the4 world of endangered magical creatures. Her delightful sidekick, Fred the zombie chicken, is a hoot. But the Baehr brothers barely make an appearance.
Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Informative. Page-turner. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
Series: Goldie Locke and the Were Bears 0.5 Category /Genre: Paranormal romance, short story Recommended for: 14+ due to fantasy elements, no sex Grammar/editing: A – near perfect Received from: Amazon purchase (free)
This is the preview /prequel book in the Goldie Locke and The Were Bears series. They do need to be read in order.
When Goldie Locke, earth-witch, has a problem with poachers destroying a herd of rare miniature mastadons, leaving one rare female infant behind, she turns to the law firm of Baehr, Baehr, and Baehr. Can they, together, put an end to the poaching and nurture the baby elephant to health and happiness?
This is a very short story to introduce us to the main characters of this series. I am already in love with Goldie and the Baehrs. They all make quick jokes about the names and have great attitudes. The story may be quick, but it is complete and there is no feeling that anything is too rushed or missing.
This is the first book I have read from Ms. Reeves. I, for one, want to read more and will soon. I just purchased the next book in the series.
Not every author takes the time to set the stage for their book series. Elizabeth has done just that. We get a little peek into her world before she became part of the world of the Baehr brothers. This is a great quick read that lets you get a feel for the author's writing, and get to know just one of the amazing characters she has to offer.
The only problem? It does it's job of leaving you wanting more! I am a HUGE fan of Elizabeth Reeves' work and I hope that she writes a spin off for each of the sisters in the Cindy Eller series because they are each amazing! Goldie Locke is just an example of that!
Read it and then grab book one and while you're at it, grab the first book in the Cindy Eller Series too- How (Not) to Kiss a Toad. She is an amazing writer!
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
3.5 stars Amazon; 3 stars Goodreads: likable but short.
I got this short story prequel when it was free, a while ago, and re-read it now because I just got book 1. Goldie is a likable character, though I was surprised she's only 19 (and some kind of whiz, with multiple degrees already). The story is light, and things happen quickly, so there's not much depth, and all the silly names are a bit much. Nevertheless, I'll be happy to pass some more time seeing Goldie and the Baehr brothers rescue more magical wildlife and take down more poachers. I wonder if her zombie chicken will be coming along again, and if we'll meet her family in person next time.
This first short story gives us a glimpse in to Goldie Locke's world. The writing style of Elizabeth Reeves is nothing short of awesome! This short story introduces us to Goldie and all of her quirky pets. I love Fred and Petunia! They are a hoot. I can't wait for more of this series, I think it's going to be just as good as the Cindy Eller series if not better!
This series would be classified as Chick-lit & Paranormal Romance, so if you don't like those categories, you won't like it! Personally, I love this type of books, they are usually fun and light hearted!
The word play on their names is so funny! But somehow perfect. Yes, it may just induce eye ball rolling I realize. It's cute though and gives a peek into Goldie's world. From the start you can tell she's strong and a fighter. She's had to stand down for most of her life. Instead now, she's fighting to full fill her fathers dreams before his death. In doing that, she saves a life and creates chaos with a few new friends. Over all, I thought this was fun and cute. I'll be reading the next few in the series for sure!
Short and cute. Liked that it just dropped the reader straight into the story, without tons of exposition or set up. Made for a slight bit of confusion, but not in a bad way. More of a where is this going way. There are links to the author's other series, but it's not necessary to read any of that to understand this one. This is the second story I've read by Elizabeth Reeves in the last week and now I'm going to have to pick up some of her full length books.
Elizabeth asked if I would read Baerhly Breathing. I loved this book! Who knew that Goldie and the three bears were private investigators? I loved these characters just as much as I loved Cindy Eller in the How Not to Kiss books. I thought to myself there better be more! I was ecstatic when I discovered that there was indeed a planned sequel.
What a wonderful series to start! I cannot believe how much I enjoyed and laughed over this novel. Ms. Reeves took a standard story and brought it up to date for adult into a marvelous read. The characters were hilarious and fun. The story kept moving quickly and smoothly. Great short story! Highly recommended for entertainment.
And the story continues....! I love that this is just a short story but it introduces you to how goldie gets started doing what she does. And it gives you some backround as well so you dont have to try and fill in the blanks and wonder til the end when it all makes sense! Cant wait to read book 1 now of this sisters tale!
I just found Elizabeth A Reeves' Cindy Eller series. I was looking at some of her other books and found this delightful intro to the Goldie Locke series. I will definitely be reading them all.
It’s a short novella, so there was no real character building, simply all plot. It was as if a few chapters were edited out of Baehrly Breathing, so the author decided to release them as a prequel. Didn't add anything to the series, but since it was a freebie, it wasn't a loss either.
Needs more. It felt more like the prologue of a book rather than a short story. I'd rather have had this as a start of a chapter and a free preview instead of anticipating a short story.
This was an adorable short, it had me laughing out loud the entire time. Goldie is witty and funny, it's a great set-up for the series. I can't wait to read the next book:)!
