In the English society of 1768 where women are bred to marry, unattractive Alexia, just sixteen, believes she will end up alone. But on the county doorstep of a neighbor’s estate, she meets a man straight out of her nightmares, one whose blue eyes threaten to consume her whole world—especially later when she discovers him standing over her murdered host in the middle of the night.

Among the many things to change for her that evening her physical appearance—from ghastly to breathtaking, an epidemic of night terrors predicting the future, and the blue-eyed man’s unexpected infusion into her life. Not only do his appearances precede tragedies, but they are echoed by the arrival of ravenous, black-robed wraiths on moonless nights.

Unable to decide whether he is one of these monsters or protecting her from them, she uncovers what her father has been truths about her own identity, about the blue-eyed man, and about love. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with the man of her dreams and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

*Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for sending me a copy for review.*

No. This is nowhere near Jane Eyre. Alexia WISHES she was Jane Eyre. This bitch is way too shallow, too goddamn selfish to be considered anywhere NEAR Eyre.

To say the least, Moonless was torture.

I have no energy to bring up all the faults this book has, so I shall briefly touch on a few. Actually, I think I'll also list all the shitty noteworthy quotes.

Once I started reading Moonless, I noticed the horribly juvenile writing. It did not flow, had weird word choice, and some sentences made absolutely no sense. There was an overabundance of adverbs (one of my main pet peeves), resulting in prose that was difficult to bear. Clearly, a better editor was needed to pay attention to these small yet important details. I mean, when you come across a sentence like "her jaw tumbled," you know the writing isn't going to be so great.

"What change, Alexia?"
"I - I am beautiful."

Oh please. This is ridiculous. Right before the love interest shows up, she suddenly becomes "beautiful?" *facepalm*

Characteristic of books like these, we have the traditional "perfect heroine" and - wait for it - the perfect hero. HE EVEN HAS THE SIGNATURE "MINOR FLAW" THAT ALL GARY STUS POSSESS. Aaaaand, best of all, the BLUE EYES (for the record, they're not piercing. They're fierce).

"He was a perfect paramour of twenty years, except for a jagged white scar cutting from below one eye down his cheek."

Oh, I'm sorry, were you expecting a historical fiction novel? For your own good, don't even bother. Were you looking for some character development and supernatural stuff? Either lower your expectations drastically or don't bother, yo.

I'm pretty sure we've all read books like this, so we all know what type of romance they had: insta-love. And obsession.

That's all I'm going to say. Really, this book has little potential, and if I were to list all the problems with this book, I would go way past the Goodreads review limit. So, unless you're a complete masochist, don't read this.

QUOTES TIME!

"Her knees trembled with giddiness from the protective rage behind his command."

"Alexia spent it listening and wishing for Sarah, or Father or Rupert - anyone to rescue her."

"He towered nearly twice her height, well not really" (my emphasis)

"He was the only thing that made sense anymore" (right after he held her as a prisoner)

"He guided her toward the empty study as she reminded herself again: she hated him. (lesson: when you hate someone, make out with them)

"Her jaw tumbled"

"I must know, were you running from me?"
"Me, running from you?" She scowled. "You left me!"
(DRAMA QUEEN)

"She had to save him! He was going to marry her!"

"The sword dropped tediously"

"I love you, father, but he is my future."
(for someone she has barely met.)

"For frightening me. For keeping me prisoner.' She wanted to continue by rebuking him for being so attractive and yet so unattainable.

And my favorite:

"His grimace deepened as he neared her side - not so much a grimace as a darkening of the eyes. She wanted to melt into the floor and cease to be."

Thank God that's done! It took all of my willpower to finish this book, I was practically sweating with exertion. Everything from a Mary Sue MC, to insta-love, to poorly plotted back stories made this novel a chore.

I truly can't think of anything good to say of this novel, and I am reminded of the common phrase" If you having nothing good to say, say nothing at all". However I feel that it is more important that other readers do not suffer the same fate as I did with this book and therefore honesty wins over tact.

Skip this book. 1.5/5

I was fortunate enough to be the mentor for Moonless in Pitch Wars. It's such an amazing read. Gritty, passionate, creepy and full of intrigue. I found myself immersed in the characters and the plot. I love genre-mash-up historicals and this is an example of this at its best.

A very good story. Crystal's style is crisp and easy to read. The story itself is fresh and interesting, a new look at paranormal characters without the usual lot of werewolves and vampires. I will definitely read the follow up!

I was utterly surprised from the very first page of this amazing book. I had expected something more "typical" considering it has so many things going on, a love story, some paranormal, a historical setting, monsters, need I go on?

I am tantalized by the "blue-eyed man" and I was on the edge of my seat {my bed with the Ipad} as I read faster and faster in eager hopes of finding out what happened with my beloved characters next!

When my publisher first put this book out, I was paralyzed by the mix of reviews. Some people loved the poetic prose that is TOTALLY reflective of the time period, and some couldn't stand it. This book was written on the tail end of a Dickens reading binge, and I was so immersed in the language of the time that Alexia's voice reflected her era. Early drafts were written in first person, which was super immersive, but also hindered the full story. The tale went to third person, but I couldn't bear to ax the poetry of the language.

Now that the whole series is out, I can say what I kept thinking every time someone reviewed this book and said they wanted more answers: just wait. They're all there, and the way book 3 ties up will leave you reeling. You may even have to come back and reread book one to see how meticulously all the clues were placed. I wish I could have given more solid ground in book one, but it would have destroyed the series payload.

To readers who have cheered all the way to the end of the series, thank you for your patience and trust. To all who have contacted me with questions, I am currently annotating this book on Wattpad with a number of insights, historical tid-bits, and behind the scenes facts. I hope to see you there.

The year is 1768. Sixteen-year-old Alexia is supposed to marry, as any proper young woman of her time is expected to do. Trouble is, she's rather unattractive - until one mysterious night, when she undergoes a physical transformation and becomes an amazingly beautiful woman. It is then that she meets an unusual cast of characters: evil child, Belleza, and the incredibly handsome, blue-eyed Kiran. As it turns out, Alexia isn't quite human. As Belleza points out, she's "one of us" - a Passionate. And she's being chased by the terrifying crimson-eyed Souless.

Moonless is an intriguing story with some excellent world building. The descriptions are so vivid, it's easy to imagine Alexia world. Throughout the book, there is an undercurrent of danger, compelling the reader to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. The characters are also well-developed. Alexia is a likeable heroine, Kiran a passionate lover, and Belleza a horrifying imp.

Moonless is a story that would appeal to readers who enjoy fantasies and paranormal romance.

There is one word that describes this book: AWESOME. Fantasy, action, mystery, romance and a sweet main character are all woven into this gripping fictional tale. I really enjoyed reading it. Crystal Collier has a wonderful way with the pictures she can create with words so that you, the reader, can place yourself in the story.

The first few lines intrigued me and made me want Alexia to be safe. The story just got better and better. Each character had depth. The author has created a whole new world while in the old world. I loved the character of Alexia. I could be her as I read the story. As I got to know her, I understood her. I enjoyed each character she met. And Kiren was drool-worthy.

There was an undercurrent of danger from the Soulless and mystery about the Passionate world always lurking in the background. Moonless is a must-read that will stick with young adult readers long after the last page has been turned. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Moonless by Crystal Collier was a fascinating book. It held my attention from beginning to end. It was incredibly well written and took us down an already well trodden path in a fresh and exciting way, putting a sensational twist on the paranormal romance and taking it in a whole new direction.

I haven't encountered anything like 'The Soulless' before and they were a chilling addition to the fantasy hall of fame of dreaded villains to avoid on a dark moonless night…

If you liked Twilight then then I think you would love Moonless but please don’t mistake it for some kind of copy-cat book or take my comparison in a bad way. While its tale of doomed lovers -Alexia and Kiren- was reminiscent of Bella and Edward, it was different in so many ways. Its legend of fantastical monsters was familiar yet so very strange and new that I was compelled by this story from first page to last. I cannot wait for the sequel 'Soulless', it is bound to be an un-missable book.

This was a great read! I was drawn to this book by page one and read it quickly. You cannot help but get pulled into this story with its intriguing methodology of telling its tale. It leaves your wanting more when you put it down (to do things like sleep!) and makes you pick it up to finish its tale. I highly enjoyed and appreciated the writing style, characters, story line and pace of the book. It has mystery, romance, suspense and supernatural aspects. Very much like a Gothic Romance. I do think there will be more books released regarding the extension of this story line (or I hope so!) but it did have a nice ending as is. I would highly recommend for anyone young adult and up.

I started this book and couldn't put it down! It seemed like I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. The characters are well developed and the storyline flowed very well. The author has a way of describing places that makes you feel as though you are there. Look forward to more from the author.

I got this book from the author and publisher, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.
Firstly I would like to thank Crystal Collier (author) and ‘Raybourne Publishing’, for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this awesome book.
I totally enjoyed this book from the very first chapter and it was just like a roller-coaster ride which didn’t bore or disappoint me for even a second. I liked the character Alexia and the way her world changed when the mysterious blue-eyed man stepped in her life and changed everything forever. The author did justice to the characters and the change in not only the makeover but also the emotional change that Alexia went through is really explained in a vivid descriptive way with the use of simple yet skilled words that gave the story a otherworldly feeling.
The mystery is dense and pulsating and with each page it grew more and more unpredictable and the slow revelations of the secrets of the mysterious man and of Alexia’s own life, surprised as well as shocked me. Kiren is drool worthy and oh so lovely. Power-packed action, heart stopping mystery, unpredictable twists and turns really spiced up the story and made it an intriguing read. A must and recommended read for ya all and hope that you all will like it as much as I did.

Looking back at my review I know I really love the story. I love the feel of historical fiction with the dresses.

I was immediately curious on what's going on, I was even more curious when she made a connection with a nightmare. Curious to why she wants to hide. Just as curious as her wanting to know answers. You would love the descriptions in this story. I feel like I'm in the journey with her. I felt all her emotions. I can't wait to see what's next.

Certainly there is no new story under the sun, but some stories strike as original. Moonless is this kind of story. May take a few chapters to engage the brain, but once the action opens up, the plot engages and carries through to a satisfactory end.

PLOT: Alexia Dumont has lived a privileged life, with a wealthy family and servants for her every need. Still, she had spent her childhood hindered by her own sense of awkwardness, her father's intense protectionism, and her mother's inexplicable distance. On her sixteenth birthday, though, her world would shake to its core, and she would never be the same. Why did she suddenly blossom into the desire of every man she met? What drew her to the mysterious and dangerous blue-eyed stranger? And who were the "Passionate," a strange collection of individuals with characteristics and appeal she could not explain? The answers threaten to tear apart the very world she lives in, but the reward may be worth the cost.

WRITING STYLE: A tad simplistic at first, a few type-os and grammar errors throughout - editorial oversights. Very dramatic descriptions bordering on melodramatic, but the plot carries the emotions well. The love story is both pure and passionate, with an abundance of mystery and tension that lasts so far into the book that the resolution proves very satisfying. I think because of the novelty of the plot, it feels disjointed and simplistic at the beginning, but once the story starts to really unfold in chapter 24, the plot gels and turns compelling.

CHARACTERS: Highlights
Alexia Dumont - sweet, dramatic, naive, brave. I don't love her character for most of the book, finding pleasure in her mostly for the relationships that revolve around her. Toward the end, though, new information we receive about her and the actions she takes open a new world of possibilities for future books that make me envision her as promising a lot of cool storylines in the next book or books.
Kiren: Just, yeah. Already picturing which gorgeous guy will play him in the movie, cause I'm sold on him completely from the beginning.
Charles Dumont: Alexia's father with a hidden past that changes Alexia's life. He is sympathetic, but also antagonistic in some elements.
Rupert: Love him. Hope he gets a resolution in future books.
Sarah: Ditto Rupert.
Miles: Favorite minor character. I'm a sucker for the faithful sidekick.
Many more characters, some fun though not particularly significant.

DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS:
1. The specific supernatural element is not really something I've seen before, though I'm sure some readers will draw a parallel with something. I have not seen it, though.
2. The purity of the romantic relationship is nice for me. If you want salacious, this is not your book.
3. The gifts of the Passionate. Novel for me, and very cool.

I received a copy of this book for the purpose of review, but I almost set it down anyway because the beginning did not ring well with me. I am so glad I did not. Admittedly, the writing style is simplistic and, in a few locations, trite, but the story itself is wonderful and interesting, and when the next book comes out, I will buy it.

I must first apologize to Miss Collier. She had kindly bestowed me with her book so that I may give my thoughts and I gave her a date for them to be up. Unfortunately life had a turn and I got behind in my reading and i am 2 days late in getting this up. I do apologize for this oversight and thank her for her patience.

this is a enthralling book. I love Kiren. His inner struggle to do what is right versus what he wants is beautiful to see. He loves Alexia but cannot be with her for it jeopardizes her. he knows this and protects her and loves her from afar. But this is only for so long. His love for her is too strong and they are connected in ways nothing can deter them from coming together. Kiren is a kind and strong man. A genteel man. he sees the kindness and good in people and is fierce in his loyalty and protection for those he loves and is bound to protect. He is a wonderful man who guides and mentors those who need it.

Alexia has strange things begin to occur. She has a radiance occur that makes her beauty ethereal. Her dreams become prophetic and her life is endangered. What has kept her alive is Kiren. Her dad protects her fiercely and only wants her safe and happy. To him this is keeping her away from Kiren. She doesnt think so and this causes a rift. This rift isn't the first, her mom caused a large one when she tells her her dads secret. I believe her mom's anger is more jealousy because she does not have the adoration of her husband that Alexia has from him.

alexia has so much going on and she is confused. She does run off with her aunt and this opens up her world. here she is saved by Miles who works for Kiren. Kiren is one who sees Miles as good and whole. he takes him in and gives him a home. Miles sacrifices to save Alexia and this will have you cry. Bellaza will have you cringe and want to see her get her just deserts. She doesn't see the impact of her actions nor does she care. she endangers her species for revenge and justice. Does she care no. The consequences of her actions mean nothing to her and one is sad to see. Her consequences effect a good Soulless one who is trying to change. Sarah's love John is soulless and he is trying to not be what his race is. Due to Bellaza's actions, he ends up turning into what he fought so long to not be.

a book on love and the sacrifices one makes for love.Of kindness and sacrifice. A interesting and enthralling book that will have you wonder what is next.

First of all, I have to write my admiration for my cousin who has dreams, and then has the fortitude and courage to follow her dreams. So now that I've disclosed my bias of the author, I will try and give a very honest review. :)

A quick read in a world where some humans are born with supernatural powers. The "passionate" must face the evil that would leave them living a soulless life. I enjoyed the fantasy world she created.

At first I had a hard time following all the descriptions. There were a few passages I had to read twice to make sure I understood what was happening, particularly the part where she discovers her reflection in the mirror. It was hard to be sure which characters were being described as they were left nameless. But as the story moved on, the descriptions were much clearer.

I felt the character description was done well. I really enjoyed Alexia's' quest to find herself and what she valued most. I could feel the conflict Kiren was experiencing as he had to choose between his responsibilities and his heart. I liked how Crystal gave you insight into different people's minds.

I think the author did an excellent job of hooking you into the story from the beginning. I couldn't put the book down and basically read it in one sitting. I can't wait for the sequel to come out!

Moonless, set in 1768, is a great combination of a Gothic mystery, romance, and paranormal. From the very first you are thrown into a world of intrigue that holds the "Passionate" and also the "Soulless". The heroine, Alexia, finds her whole world changed when she turns 16 and finds out that she is not a mere human. Her dreams are haunted by the deaths of others. She finds out that things around her are not what they seem. As you read you will have more questions then answers. Those readers who think they always figure out what is happening early on in stories, well think again. You will be as mystified as everyone else as Alexia will not know who to trust.
She also falls for the strange and handsome man, Kiren, with the piercing blue eyes that steals her heart.

Honestly, this book is nothing like I have read before. This book is for older teens and adults (as there is some violence and major kissing going on...but nothing else.) The world is built slowly and it unfolds in a haunting and sometimes terrifying way. With great characters, intense scenes and a boatload of intrigue, you will be flying through the pages of Moonless like I was. It's a good thing that there will be more in this series to follow.

The he only thing even close to a negative I can say about this book is that I wanted MORE! I can only hope that the minute holes in some of the characters' backstories is because there's a prequel in the works. That would make me IMMENSELY happy.

Alexia's world is forever changed on her 16th birthday. She seems to transform into a beautiful being that she hardly recognizes in the mirror, but she discovers a world that she never dreamed existed - and that's she is a part of it. Or could be if she chooses to be. This book is filled with heart pounding terror (Bellezza absolutely terrifies me), heart wrenching love and heartbreak, dark family secrets, and creatures that pretty much want to eat your soul (but Bellezza is still scarier!). I had nightmares, but it was worth it lol.

If you like Romance literature, this is the book for you. The imagery is sweet and compelling with beings who are a few steps more passionate then us. They are trying to protect our world which is about to be plunged into conflict so terrifying it could only be captured on the pages of a book.

The chapters are short and give you good breaks, though you sometimes just want to keep reading. Clearly there will be a second book which is aggravating to have to wait for, but I expect great things from this author.

The Good: Crystal has done amazing world building and we get to meet Alexia and her family at a crucial time in her life. The at first unsightly Alexia is quickly transformed into a beautiful young lady but like all 'quick fixes' this comes at a price and she is thrust into a world where humans aren't the only beings on earth and moonless nights are not the time to for a night stroll. Readers will be drawn into a world where females are raised to be married to better their families and even Alexia's father who's more lenient than most has his expectations of her. These are thrown asunder however with the appearance of the mysterious Kiren and the crazy (like a fox in my opinion) yet deliciously clever Bellezza. Alexia's transformation not just from teenager to womanhood but also from being thought of as a human of noble blood to one of the special beings called the 'Passionate' is chronicled in Moonless and we readers get to see her go from a sheltered girl to a brave heroine is ready not to just fight for her family but for love as well. No matter the costs. Also you get to read snippets of other characters perspectives and get the chance to see how others view Alexia and all the craziness brought not just by her antics but also the dangerous Soulless who lurk waiting to grab their next victim.

The Bad: Sigh, the following is why Moonless can't get five stars from me. It is a five star story but the following issues just don't mesh well for me. First at the beginning Alexia was okay, not great but ok. Then she got pretty and then got whiny bitchy in my opinion. I get that she wants to find out about the transformation and the mysterious Kiren. But she seems to run to danger, grab it by the neck, then whine when it bites back. Seriously I hated her for the first 40% of my kindle read and would have abandoned the book if the surrounding story and other characters didn't hold my attention. I got to liking her later and loving her before the end but it's never good to hate the MC for almost half a book. This I don't fault the author for, it's my own personal tastes. Second I just can't stand it when girls run headlong into danger after a guy, seriously, there isn't a shortage of males on the planet. I get that she is in love but come on, this is so overdone it's tragic that such a wonderful book has such an overused theme. Third I actually loved secondary characters like Bellezza and Miles way more than Alexia and their lives drew much more interest to me. I know secondary characters should help the story but they actually stole the show and made Alexia look somewhat petty and bland in comparison. Also there were parts of the novel that were somewhat boring and caused sections to limp along until something exciting happened to jolt the story along.

My Verdict: This is a well written novel and despite my hang ups it was a really good read. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys young adult books that are different from the regular fare and those who just want to read a really good book. Alexia matured in the book and I got to like her and Kiren's bond but the issue was how long it took me to like her and I leave her likeability up to each individual reader. The supporting characters are amazing and if you want a read that is chock full of exciting characters this is the book for you. Whether you love romance, adventure, crazed super children like Bellezza (though she looks thirteen), paranormal insanity and main characters who can make you fall in love or drive you batty...Moonless is ready to take on the ride of your life. And I personally am ready for a sequel. Plus novellas staring secondary characters from the series. Please?

Moonless grabbed me from the first few paragraphs and kept me reading to the very last page and then AGONIZING that I'd have to wait for the next installment, (Soulless, coming Fall 2014) to get much wanted insight and answers. The writing is beautiful, descriptive, and appropriate to the period, and a delightful change of style from others in this genre.

Collier's story reminded me of a YA version of A Discovery of Witches, but to me, Moonless worked much better by having a seventeen-year-old protagonist, Alexia, and a setting in only the 1700s. Alexia's teenaged insta-love behavior towards Kiren was understandable and expected, though I felt like Kiren's feelings needed to be better explained. We're not told much about why he is so drawn to Alexia in this installment; it really didn't make sense to me and was even a little odd. In any case, the romance element will satisfy readers, and Kiren is truly swoon-worthy in his manner and mystery. There are some pretty electrifying kisses and some serious sexual tension building, so I'm not sure how Collier will be able to keep future installments clean, like this book.

Readers will enjoy the building-up of the three parallel worlds that exist at any given moment and the resulting plethora of characters and sub-plots that are spun as a result of the second world of the Passionate and the Soulless. (yes, I said three parallel worlds! you'll never see it coming.) There are some fabulously memorable characters - good, evil, and undetermined - and hints we'll be finding out more. Short chapters help readers to manage it all, though be prepared to have MANY questions that may or may not get answered. And that's the main reason I'm rating this a 4 and not a 5.

With any paranormal storyline, there is an expectation that readers will have to suspend their disbelief, and I'm good with that; however, there were several times where I just couldn't do it and the "not knowing" created some plot holes. The writing was beautifully done, with the exception of some pronoun use that caused confusion in trying to figure out who was speaking or being spoken about.

Despite these minor flaws -- which I anticipate will be corrected in what I expect to be a smashing-good follow-up -- I really enjoyed this story and recommend it to high school readers and older.

I received a free eBook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review -- the only kind I give!

This was a good story with great characters and I wasn’t ready for it to be over. When I offered to read Moonless, I had no idea what the story was about, but was sucked in immediately and didn’t want to put it down.

The characters were believable and the author painted a great picture of each. I do have to say there were times that I got lost in the translation of who was talking, or providing the details at the time. This seemed to clear up for me the further into it I got, but there were a few spots that I did re-read for clarification.

The background and family history was laid out perfectly, only revealing what I needed to know until the time was right for the rest. Sometimes I felt I was being told the story verse being in the story though. When I read a book, I want to be in the story with the characters. I want to feel the same pain or sense of accomplishment that they have.

Kiren, love the name and blue eyes, was the one character I really needed and longed for more of. Alexis loved him and I wanted to love, but just couldn’t because there wasn’t enough from him in the story for me to form that same opinion. I hope there will be more of Kiren in the next one!

Alexis is a strong girl and has a lot going for her. She was able to push the boundaries and take the risks needed in her life to get what she wanted and I really enjoyed that. This story is worth reading and I will absolutely read more.

Crystal Collier's novel, Moonless, is set in 1768. Alexia is a girl who is different. Everything changes when she turns sixteen. She finds that she is more than human. Abilities start to manifest, starting with the ability to see the future. She is haunted by a man with deep blue eyes, creatures with red eyes, and a young, vicious girl.

It starts out a little confusing, but soon settles out and becomes a page turner as you get into it. Crystal Collier keeps the plot tight, though handling the subplots can be a little shaky at times.

I bought this book purely because someone I know is related to the author so I didn’t have high expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised. Though other reviewers would have you believe there is more to it, I see it as mostly romance. But I really, really loved the romance. And, it was squeaky clean. I sure hope there is another story to follow.

I picked this one up on a whim. I really liked the cover and the description grabbed me right from the start and lets face it, I am a sucker for anything set in the 18th century and I won't lie, the reference to Jane Eyre was one that piqued my interest, it so happens to be one of my favorite stories by Bronte and even though I wouldn't say this was anything like the plot of Jane, it did have the same feel as Jane. That almost gothic darkness that makes you simultaneously feel somewhat dark and moody and just a little bit broody while still immersing you in a beautiful world.

And just like a good Bronte read, this moved slowly with lots of setting and descriptive writing. I loved the atmospheric setting and the characters were intriguing. The author set this up so we get small glimpses into both Alexia and Kiren's point of view and just enough of a hint at what was going on with them that it left you begging for more. In fact it could be frustrating at times. I wanted it all and I wanted it all right this minute.

Even with the slow sometimes frustrating start and world building when this did decide to pick up the pace I found myself unable to put it down and completely immersed in the story.

By the time the last chapter was in front of me I found that I was really enjoying the story and didn't want it to end.

The author has a way of capturing your attention without you even being aware she has until before you know it the story is over and you are completely surprised it is.

I will definitely be picking up book two to see how the story continues.

I didn't know what to expect from Moonless. The reference in the blurb to Jane Eyre definitely peaked my interest, as that is one of my favorite classics. It was a good reference to make. There is the same feeling or weight of something a little darker as you read this story. It is also set in basically the same time period. There is young, innocent, and niave Alexia and older, experienced, intense, and roguish Kiren. There is a great attraction and passion between them that is almost instantaneous and which Alexia doesn't completely understand.

Then there are the differences. This is definitely not Jane Eyre rewritten. It just has that feel to it. Alexia has a loving family. She has means and has been cared for her whole life. Then the circumstances surrounding Kiren are also very different. He definitely has been keeping something hidden from Alexia, but it is something that is not only his secret, but hers as well.

The beginning of the story started off very mysteriously. I was intrigued by the characters and wanted to know what was going on. Alexia happens to see a man that she has seen in her dreams, but doesn't know who he is or what it all means. Then something terrible happens and Alexia is whisked away. The story continued to be mysterious as the story progresses, and slowly things are explained. There were some things that didn't make sense to me, such as Alexia looking quite haggard and then miraculously changing overnight. It would have made sense on her sixteenth birthday, but not then. I also wanted a lot more information on the Passionate and the Soulless. There was some explanation, but I wanted more.

I did really like Alexia in many ways. She acts her age in being a little rebellous and passionate, but she also has this fierceness to her to find the truth and to defend those she loves. That drive seems to carry her into danger quite often, but it is still commendable. Kiren is your brooding and handsome leading man. He is also torn and tortured in many ways and has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. He doesn't want Alexia to become a weakness for him, for both of their safety, but he desperately loves her. Their romance was the focus of much of the second half of the story and some of it was a little over-the-top for me. It was a little too instant as well and I would have liked it to have slowly developed a little more, particularly on Alexia's part. Kiren's love I could understand as he has known Alexia for a very long time.

There was plenty of action, intensity, and climatic moments, which all kept my interest. There are a couple of different characters that the story follows and one character who has been plotting revenge. It got pretty hairy towards the end. I wasn't sure exactly how it was all going to fit together and turn out. It ends satisfactory, but open for a second book.

I would recommend Moonless to those who enjoy a more Gothic tale, Romance, and historical Urban Fantasy.

Content: There is some intense kissing and violence, but I would consider this clean.
Source: From the author, which did not affect my review in any way.

This ARC was provided through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

DNF

I always try to finish an ARC. It seems only fair that in exchange for a free book, I should read the whole thing, but I just couldn’t do it. The writing was too overwrought. Rarely have I seen so much purple prose in a published work. I think the author would have done well to heed Stephen King when he said, 'Any word you have to hunt for in a thesaurus is the wrong word. There are no exceptions to this rule.'

I feel like the author had a thesaurus open for this entire process. See, “ ridiculous oratory of superfluous praise” on page 41 for one of many examples (ironically phrased, isn’t it?).

Though this book was pitched as “Jane Eyre meets Supernatural” there is nothing reminiscent of either the gothic Eyre or paranormal contemporary in this book. For one, gothics are all about the pacing. The anticipation and suspense builds slowly and deliberately. The atmosphere is richly detailed and chilling. That was completely missing here. “Thing” happens, followed by another “Thing” that happens. One moment we are introduced to a lonely and plain girl, within PAGES she is inexplicably gorgeous. But there is no weight to any of these events. It doesn’t matter.

But, back to my main point, the writing:

“She hated empty things: pictures without a soul, statues wrought in tragedy” (12)
“Scarlet skirts hung about the girl, like the bleeding petals of a rose, still as death” (14)
“Sweet pollen and rustic oak tickled her nose, transporting her to a grove of wooded mystery so deep mankind would never comprehend the fullness. Those consuming eyes met hers and flickers of heat burst in her cheeks, spreading across the back of her neck. His pupils widened, nearly eclipsing the night sky” (26)
“her jaw tumbled” (49)

Personal favourite:

“She shivered at his touch and lifted her eyes. They glistened beneath her lashes, the shadows of a summer canopy where dangerous things happened….A spark of hope shot through her shaded jungle.” (44)

I must admit to laughing uproariously at “shaded jungle.” Yep, still laughing!!!

Overall, I would give this book a zero if I could. I found no redeeming quality in this novel and I refuse to waste my time by reading further.
