I loved this book so much that it inspired my first Goodreads review. It is so refreshing to not read about yet another unrealistic alpha/bluestocking heroine. Does anyone else find that there is a disproportionate number of historical female heroines who are completely able to manage by themselves and do not need a man?
The romance and characters are so believable. Doeg, the hero, is so real. He is a flawed, insecure man who, growing up, never felt like he "belonged." He committed some horrible deeds in Unbidden, the first book in the Evolution series, but having realized how wrong he was, tries to become a better man. He does so through Phee, the heroine. Phee is sweet, subdued and knows her place in a man's world, but despite her submissiveness, she is never weak. She knows what she wants - her own home, own children, own husband, perhaps even love - and she dares to make her dreams come true. There are no tiresome misunderstandings here, just a sweet story of two lonely people building a family and becoming soulmates.
I'm sorry to say that I didn't read the first book in the series before this one. I wish I had, because I loved this book! What a complex character Doeg was! I do love a tortured hero story and this fit the bill perfectly. When Philantha entered the picture I knew she was just the thing to start the arduous process of tearing down Doeg's walls. This book had a very different feel than the average historical romance. It felt more serious, more real and definitely flipped the script on the typical rakish man who had bedded multiple women before marriage. Following Doeg's journey to find himself was wonderful. The way he blossomed under the influence of Phee was a joy to behold. What an extraordinary story. I am eager to read more from Jill Hughey.
I loved all three books in the Evolution series. Beautiful writing, interesting characters, and great stories.
The best kind of series. Each book stands on its own, but is enriched by the others. All three are love stories, yet each is completely unique. Redeemed's heroine, Philantha, was not the type of character I would generally like, yet I loved her. She is soft, resigned to life, and willing to be subservient to "her lord." But, it turns out, Philantha DOES have one dream and does have the strength to pursue it.
i LOVED Doeg's story. From the first book i just always had a feeling the he wasn't "bad", jus misunderstood. :) Phee is just adorable: submissive yet strong; definitely not cowed down by her male "superiors"
