Do your parents ever worry about you? Do they constantly remind you to look both ways when you cross the street or to always eat a sensible lunch? Well, your parents aren’t half the worrywarts that Little Pig’s parents are! Little Pig can hardly leave the house without:
• sunscreen (for his sensitive piggy skin), • a scarf (in case the temperature drops), • water wings (because there’s water everywhere), • insect repellent (some mosquitoes are as big as birds), • and a hat (also for his sensitive piggy skin).
When Little Pig’s Snout Scout troop goes on a hiking trip, he shows that he is clever, resourceful, and capable—all on his own.
This is a great book to read to children. I enjoyed reading it myself. I think everyone can relate to Little Pig when it comes to nagging parents who don’t think you can do anything without them. I know I have felt that way before. The story is about Little Pig who’s parents are constantly nagging at him, and think he is completely incapable of doing anything on his own. Until one day when Little Pig went on a hike with his Snout Scout troop. Their usual troop leader was absent, so they had a new scout leader for the day, Mr. Ravenous. The scouts ate their food, drank their juice, and went swimming. Everyone by the end of the day was sun burnt, hungry, thirsty, and had blisters on their feet, expect for Little Pig, who was starting to get suspicious of Mr. Ravenous. Mr. Ravenous told the scouts that they were going home, but lead them farther up the mountain, and told them to make a fire because it was time for dinner. That’s when Little Pig knew something was going on, because instead of going down the mountain they were going up, and no one had any food left. Mr. Ravenous took off his sunglasses and hat and Little Pig realized that Mr. Ravenous was a wolf and that they were his dinner. Little Pig thought of a plan, saved the day, and lead the scouts down the mountain to safety. From that day on Little Pig no longer had nagging parents, and his name was Capable Pig.
Here's another one that I liked probably a lot more than my son, in this case because it's a little over his head. Little Pig is a sheltered and overprotected child who comes into his own when he saves his Snout Scout troop from a substitute pack leader. For a little bit older child, maybe 4 and up, this would be a lot better and I plan to revisit it in a few years.
