THE BEAST IS OUT...

A wave of unprecedented violence rages across Los Angeles. Instigated by a new gang called the Myrs, they are feared for their lust for murder and led by the most ferocious gang leader in the city's history: a giant known only as Agamemnon. Someone many believe is not human.

A HERO IS BORN...

Jack Kane retires from the DEA. He no longer believes the violence he has perpetrated in the name of justice is worth it. Coming home to Los Angeles, he discovers a city torn apart by gang warfare. When the violence nearly kills the ones he loves, Jack can no longer sit by and watch and vows to take down the deadly Myrs. But Agamemnon displays superhuman abilities. Jack is left broken in mind and body after even a brief confrontation. Laying in the hospital near death, a woman enters his life and offers him a chance to defeat Agamemnon. But to defeat him, he must become like him...

COVER: the cover really didn't fit the story. I will not comment on it further until the author uploads the book to Goodreads.
CHARACTERS: I liked Jack, the protagonist. He was a DEA agent who resigned becaues the department conflicted with his views on morality. Jack the returns to California to be close to his sister and niece. Jack has money, but he works hard to not let that change him and wants to be thought of as a regular Joe. All the characters in this story are believable and real. The author allows the reader to get different viewpoints from several characters, which helps make the story whole.
CONFLICT: Jack wants to lie low and open up a karate studio but all his plans are ruined when he crosses paths with an unfathomable, eight-foot tall bank robber who throws cars like baseballs and swats away bullets like they’re mosquitoes at a bar-b-q. Agamemnon, the he-can’t-be-human bank robber, crushes Jack’s legs and leaves him for dead. Jack finds himself in a coma for a year when this strange lady breaks him out and takes him to a secret lab. Jack is nursed back to health but he has some extra Robocop effects to go along with his second chance at life. Jack wants to hunt down Agamemnon to incite some revenge/justice on him. But Jack has to find Agamemnon before the super villain blows up the entire city!
VILLAIN: Agamemnon is a worthy villain. Not only is he super big, super mean, and super strong, but he is also super charismatic and super rational. I liked that the explanation the author offers for all this super stuff that’s going on in this city. It is totally plausible. Agamemnon’s body count is staggering so I was surprised at what happened to him at the ending. This bad guy has a minion army that rivals all other minion armies. They are loyal (most of them), they are ruthless, and they are not as dumb as other minions.
ENDING: I think the author wrapped up the story in an adequate manner although there were a few questions I still had. Like what was up with that voice Jack kept hearing? And since there doesn’t seem to be a sequel, I will have to make up my own answer. *Sigh* But, that does not take away that this was a great, quick read and I do not think it will be a disappointment to others that read it.
Tanjlisa’s Rating System: Pretending to clap, Pity clap, Medium clap, Enthusiastic applause, and Standing ovation
I give Superhero an enthusiastic applause. The writing was great, the story was engaging, and the characters were realistic. Nice story.

This book is in desperate need of an editor! Judging from what I read, it was hard to believe that this was written by a published author; it felt more like something written by a middle-school-age boy who reads waaaaay too many comic books.

I started to highlight all of the errors and awkward sentences I saw, but gave up after a while because there were just too many of them. Here are just a few (my comments are in italics):

He wished he had a cigarette right now and glanced around to see if anyone was out that he could bum one off, but it was just empty space.
I'm not sure how to parse this sentence.

The author mentions "thirty kilos of cocaine," and later the character...
...took a gym bag from the trunk. He filled it with the coke
I don't think thirty kilos of coke would fit in the average gym bag, and certainly would be difficult to carry, since gym bags usually have no support structure.

...sound was bassed and loud
What? I can't hear you-- there's too much bass.

"Dike,"
I think the author meant "dyke" rather than "dike" ...unless the story took place in Holland.

...felt the sheer currents of power
As opposed to opaque currents of power?

...breaking two of the soldier's backs
The soldier had two backs?

She leaned down and ruffled through his pockets.
Gee, which one of them was wearing ruffles?

He's got a bomb. I don't know what it is. It looked like it could be nuclear.
If it's a bomb, then he *does* know what it is.

...chickens in a coup
OK, so the chickens are going to overthrow the government-- got it.

...vice-like grip
Try "vise" instead.

...straight into the air, directly at a ninety-degree angle.
If it was at a ninety-degree angle, it would be traveling parallel to the ground

His ribs screamed to him from pain but the pain had subsided greatly since even a few minutes ago.
Where do I begin?

The Dragon flung him to his feet but Jack forced himself back to the ground, holding down his legs, straining against himself until the boy was out of sight.
Who just did what to whom, and who got paid?

Words fail me...and apparently they failed the author, too.

Superhero (An Action Thriller)

I guess I should start by explaining the 4 rating I have given this novel. It's because I fully expect to read a better Methos novel in the future. If I give this a 5, I won't be able to give a 5 to the next one without having to go to a lot of trouble making it clear that the next one is actually better than this one despite the identical ratings. Make no mistake through, this is a damned good book.

"Superhero vs. Super Evil"

A new gang group in Los Angeles is spreading violence across the city. The gang called the Myrs has a desire to murder; the gang leader is known as Agamemnon ... could he not be a human? Jack Kane is now retired from the DEA and is shocked into action when he returns to L.A. The leader appears to have superhuman abilities. A hospitalized woman near death offers Jack what he needs to bring down the gang. Awesome story. I could not put down this well written thriller. Highly recommend.

Started off well and was shaping up to be an action-packed superhero story, but no dice.

Stilted writing, awkward plotting, and lack of action made this a lacklustre tale which fizzled out in the end.

This is definitely in the mold of grim and gritty 80s style comics like "The Dark Knight Returns" instead of the more traditional Golden Age of comics. The plot is sort of like "Robocop" meets "The Greatest American Hero" in that our hero Jack is pretty much killed, but thanks to alien technology is able to be rebuilt into a cyborg with superpowers. He uses these to go after Agamemnon, the guy who nearly killed him and who has pretty much the same abilities as Jack.

Overall it's a pretty serviceable superhero tale if you like the grim and gritty stuff. Unfortunately an M. Night-style twist at the end ruins what would otherwise be a 5-star yarn. I do appreciate that the author at least tried to create a different hero with his own backstory, as so many other authors seem content to just mimic Superman or Batman or Iron Man, etc. and set them in play.

For the price I got it for on Amazon I'd have to say it was worth the money.

That is all.

Very Good Read

Very Good Read

this book was simple and the details were very easy to follow. I believe the author knew exactly what they wanted from their story and capitalized on it. The ending was pretty typical, but we must still be happy even though we see it coming. I would love to read more works by this author.

This book was a fun read. I did not highlight the errors, but I do recall that it had too many. It reminded me of "The Million Dollar Man" only much more outrageous. It took me back to my childhood and comic books.

The cover DOES NOT go with the story AT ALL!

With that being said, I had a hard time getting into this book which was disappointing. I thought the story seemed interesting and was excited to read it but it never kept my attention.

Stan Lee move over

I've always been interested in superheroes. Ever since buying D.C. comics years ago. And this book didn't disappoint. And just when I thought Victor Mentos had reached his apex with the Jon Stanton series, he has reached a new genre. Kudos.

Interesting tale on the genre

The origin story was more believable than most. The protagonist was a man with law enforcement experience. There was an interesting twist at the end too. Overall it was a good book that wasn't about juveniles.

A Fantastic Thriller

Again this author surpasses himself by introducing another genre while producing a fantastic book into another area which until now he has not ventured.
