A must read for anyone in the medical field!! After graduating from physical therapy school a year ago, I felt I was missing a major component in diagnosing and treating my patients. After reading Caleb’s book and implementing his approach, I’ve been able to better educate my patients, provide simple and effective exercises, and see quicker improvements. I am hopeful this book will result in less invasive, more natural treatments of all conditions. Definitely worth the read!!
200+ pages of a long ad for Slater's practice. No advice, no exercises, no in-depth detailed description of the way he intervened. Just vague indications that his evaluations and treatment miraculously cured every problem that the patients had. The result is a totally useless book. Avoid
If you have a spine, read this book! Patients and medical professionals alike will gain a new outlook on treating pain, injury and disease.
Note that I received an ARC of this book on Reedsy Discovery, where I posted an editorial review that reflects my honest analysis of the book.
As promised, Dr. Slater takes the reader on a journey through a vast number of health issues, all of which can be marvelously and successfully remediated through his simple approach of treating the spine with physical therapy.
His message has two parts. First, he acknowledges that our current healthcare system is letting us down, offering incomplete solutions—frequently involving invasive treatments such as surgery—that do not necessarily resolve symptoms. While applauding the effort and dedication of individual doctors, Dr. Slater states, “What I am opposed to is a system that restrains physicians. A system that puts them in a situation to fail.” This resonates. As a patient, I am repeatedly frustrated with the way mainstream medicine seems to treat the body as a collection of components, rather than an integrated whole.
Second, Dr. Slater promises a better way. The solution? First and foremost, evaluate and treat the spine. Why does this method so often succeed where other treatments have failed? Because the spine innervates the entire body, providing vital communication to each individual part. With even a small kink in this network, the rest of the system can break down, causing injury and disease or hindering healing.
“There is almost nothing in your body that doesn’t have a nerve supply, and those nerves mostly emerge from the spine… My best explanation is that somewhere along the way, we became too granular in our focus. By micro-searching for answers in our cells, genetics, and chemical interactions, we forgot about the thing right in front of us, a structure that is involved in literally every aspect of our bodies and their functions. We forgot about the spine.”
Written with personality and humor, the book offers plenty of evidence for the efficacy of this unconventional approach, expressed in language perfectly accessible to the lay person. Those within the medical field will gain even more insight from Dr. Slater's frequent references to specific regions of the spine and their correlation to discussed symptoms. However, the occasional f-bomb, though conversational and lighthearted, may alienate some readers.
The book’s main flaw is one Dr. Slater openly admits: Though his self-acknowledged goal is, “Teach people how to treat themselves,” he has not yet offered any specific information on how to care for the spine. His reasons for omitting this aspect (in this book, at this time) make perfect sense, but for the moment it leaves readers in a predicament. Until more physicians and therapists adopt or adapt his method in their own practices, a suffering person has little recourse beyond booking an appointment with Dr. Slater's Pennsylvania clinic.
On a personal note, I found it disappointing that Dr. Slater seems unaware, or does not acknowledge, that there are numerous more holistic practitioners (e.g. naturopaths and chiropractors) who would view his spinal epiphany with little surprise. I suspect, however, that he omitted the topic because it would not help his aim—which is to get this information out into the mainstream medical world.
And to that aim: If both patients and professionals take this Spinal Truth to heart and elevate the spine to its rightful place in medical purview … Well, it just might start a health revolution.
So a quick bit of background on me, for some context. I was a massage therapist for almost 30 years, and had taken a lot of advanced training in orthopedic and spinal assessment methods and treatments. I quickly fell in love with the spine, and focused my practice on that. Over the years I saw some of the same amazing results that Dr. Slater talks about it his book. And he is absolutely right, that this SHOULD be the default step with any new patient. Assess and treat the spine first, then go from there. The book is full of inspiring and amazing stories of real people who benefited greatly from this approach.
Now for the negative. He mentions a handful of times how groundbreaking and revolutionary this information is, and leads the reader to the believe that he is the first person to have thought of all this. I'm sorry to say this information is neither groundbreaking nor revolutionary, as Chiropractors and traditional Osteopaths have known this since the late 1800's. So that was a little off-putting for me.
All in all, this is a very important book and the information does need to get out there, not only for patients but physicians as well, and I do recommend reading the book if you have any health issues that remain unresolved.
