Dead and Missing by Chris Myers (Book #2: Ripsters Series) Source: ARC from author Rating: 5 HUGE stars
Every once in a great while I am well and truly surprised by a book and am glad to know that I can still be so. I knew, without doubt, I would like Dead and Missing but I was in no way prepared for its pure awesomeness!! Dead and Missing is the sophomore of Chris Myer’s Ripsters series and Myers has not only come out swinging but has managed to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump!
Dead and Missing opens with Brittany Howland out of bed early (whaaat?) to take Drew the Ghost fishing. Yep, you read that correctly Though Brittany is generally loathe to do anything that gets her out of bed early on a weekend, some friends and some favors are just worth it. Jolie, Brittany’s best friend and leader of the Ripsters crew, is meeting with her father. Yep, you read that correctly Jolie’s father hasn’t been a part of her life, ever, and her mother has never offered any real information or kind words about him. For Jolie, the chance to meet with and get some answers from her father is an opportunity she simply cannot pass up. However, daddy fails to show and Brittany not only gets pushed into a well but she loses Drew as well. Bugger!
For Jolie, the loss of Drew is devastating but she understands that he has finally crossed over into the light and she must learn to accept the reality of his crossing and move on. Brittany however is absolutely certain Drew has not crossed over and his disappearance is somehow connected to her little tumble down the well. However, Brittany must convince Jolie of this theory and in order to do that, Brittany needs proof. Enter Reese, Brittany’s crush and fellow Ripster’s teammate. It doesn’t take long for Britt and Reese to gather the proof that they need and everyone, including Jolie begins to understand that something well (HA!) and truly evil is at work in Plymouth. Mixed into all of the mess is the fact that all of the Ripsters – Hayden, Reese, Jolie, Brittany and Reese (eventually!) have been invited to join the Guild and must pass their first level tests in order to begin their training. And man, oh man is their testing and training wretched. In fact, the level of wretchedness is something that the adults among the Guild – Jolie’s dad and Reese’s grandmother Noni in particular – have begun to notice how targeted the kids seem to be. See? Something evil is well (HA!) and truly afoot.
Everything about Dead and Missing sucked me in and kept me turning pages as fast and as furiously as my little fingers could fly! Not only does Dead and Missing continue the original plot line established in book one but it rocks right on through with the ever expanding, long-term plot line as well as starting and completing a kickin’ short-term, novel specific plot. Myers takes the series to a whole new level with some intense magical action, loads of witch and Salem history (a personal favorite!) and a boatload of interpersonal stuff. There is evolution where Hayden and Jolie are concerned, where Brittany and her mom (there is some serious bad assery here!) and Reese are concerned, where Jolie, her mom, dad and, grandmother (bad assery to the tenth degree here!) are concerned and where pretty much everyone is concerned. Character development is at an extremely high level in this read which ticks off yet another personal favorite!
I have only one tiny complaint about this read and in the grand scheme of things, it is truly teeny and tiny. My complaint: Jolie has got to get over herself where Drew is concerned. I understand her history with him is significant and that Myers clearly has some big plans for him in future installations of the series (no spoilers!) but seriously, he’s dead and it’s just creepy. While this complaint is something that crops up throughout Dead and Missing it in no way changes my overall feelings about Jolie or the series. I know, and once you read this book you will too, that this situation is going to resolve itself sooner rather than later.
The Bottom Line: I can’t get enough of this series and we are only on book two!! This is a smooth and polished read with an incredible plot and ridiculously incredible characters. Other than my one teeny, tiny complaint I can’t find anything about this read to complain about. There’s nothing but pure awesome here and I have absolutely no reservations about recommending this read to any and all YA+ readers. Don’t wait people, get book one, plow through it and immediately begin book two. You. Won’t. Be. Sorry.
Find more reviews on What She Reads - After solving the case in Date with the Dead the and Jolie being introduced to her father this book takes the Ripsters team for another ride. With all the team, including Reece being initiated into the Guild to help them expand their powers they seem to be on the clock.
While Jolie plans to spend some time with her absentee father Brittany decides to keep Drew busy by taking him fishing only to find a crying girl over the other side by bloody bond. The girl appears to be dead and who seems to have drown long before their time. Brittany and Drew think it's a good idea to try and help her the crying girl only resulting in Brittany being pushed into an old well and Drew disappears. How will Brit get out of the damn well but also how will she tell Jolie she lost her stupid ghost!
A thrilling sequel to Date with the Dead, Chris Myers left nothing out. We are now thrown into the Guild something that is even more bigger than what the Ripsters crew had imagined. fighting their way to get Drew back but also to find out who they are and complete the tasks handed to them from the Guild. Heading back to the days of the Salem Witch Trials we find connections between the light and dark practitioners.
I love in this book how Jolie and Brittany get a lot closer, we also learn a lot more about the grown ups in this book. Told from the POV of both Jolie and Brittany we are able to see what they are both thinking and feeling and to my amazement they are both quite similar, other than their dress sense of course.
Brittany cannot catch a break in this book and although she knows Jolie is obviously the favourite of the Guild and of everyone else she has nothing but adoration herself for her friend. Their bond just gets stronger and stronger. Even when Brit is struck by Demons and is literally sick she pushes herself to help everyone.
My feelings for the characters still remain quite positive other than Hayden for some reason i find Hayden's thoughts and actions to be somewhat sinister, it was only subtle but there were just thing that got under my skin. For instance his extreme jealousy over Drew... when Brit tells Jolie that Drew has disappeared Jolie believes he must've crossed over and Hayden constantly badgers Jolie to let go. To me his words and actions were just a little to harsh, Drew is someone who was constant for Jolie in a time when she was alone and for Hayden to be jealous and unsympathetic I was just confused and felt I needed to know more of who Hayden really is.
Reece was always one of my favourite characters in book one and it's quite a shame we don't get to really see much of him, he's always there but there is less dialogue for him. I do however find that now Reece gained some of his powers there has been a positive change in his attitude even him and Hayden are getting a long better.
Even though this book was a split between Jolie and Brittany I still found Jolie to be the forefront on the book, which make us see the importance she holds as a character to the plot. Overall the series for me so far is great and I cannot wait now till a third book is released!
THE COVER
I have major issues with this cover, I know we're seeing Brittany, but I don't get why she has such a blank expression and was Photoshopped excessively? Again, the font treatment is not the best, I would love to see both covers in the series to be reworked so we can see they do belong together as a series because as it stands at the moment there is nothing linking them other than Chris Myers' name.
Jolie's best friend is a ghost. A really hot, but dead ghost. While fishing with Jolie's other BFF he disappears. We immediately plunge right into the conspiracy of back stabbing and power seeking politics of the Guild. Who would steal a ghost? What would they do to him? Who do you trust other than the fearsome foursome?
Jolie is completely overwhelmed with the lose of her other half. She had her moments in this book, but she wasn't the same bad ass from book one. Brittany on the other hand cracked me up. Her relentless pursuit of Reese.....it was so ridiculous I smiled in spite of myself.
The first book was just a bunch teenagers running around Plymouth, MA playing ghost busters. This book was all about witchcraft, psychic abilities, martyrs, demons, ghosts, treason, back stabbing politics, and conspiracy theories. This isn't high school anymore!
I am still 100% team Drew. Hayden really rubbed the wrong way constantly pressuring Jolie to let Drew go! I am holding onto the dying hope that Jolie & Drew can be together. I hope they find what they need in New Orleans!
List of Answers I need: Why is Shad suddenly a good guy? Why does Jolie's mom only want to play the naive card? Is Jolie's dad the dark one? Is Drew alive and astral projecting? Is Hayden secretly bad? Who is Brit's dad? Will someone kick Adam's ass?
…and then, 36 hours later and I’m done with it. And now I have to wait again. Aaaargh!!!
So worth it.
I love this series. I love Jolie, Reece, Hayden and Drew (even though he was…elsewhere for a good chunk of this book). And Brit. I LOVE her. We get the book from her perspective as well as Jolie’s. She is so funny. She can be on the verge of being murdered and bemoan the fact that she has so much shopping left to do. She takes pride in her SAPness (read it to find out). Pink rules! I need more information on Shad. Oh, and Courtney still needs to go to juvie.
Ms. Myers has the talent to mix serious subject matter – even serious narration – with heavy doses of humor, which means the rather heavy topic of death can be told in a way that isn’t oppressive at all. Her characters are alive. Especially the dead ones. You care about them, and they seem like real people, never caricatures.
This series rocks. This author rocks! She must write faster. FASTER! Read. This. Book. ASAP. Read the first one first, however. This much fun should be illegal.
There are some sequels which make me think 'ok maybe this series should stop now' and then there are awesome sequels like Dead and Missing which left me hoping that Chris Myers will be writing a third installment to the Ripsters books. The difference with Dead and Missing and Date with the Dead is that the reader now has two narrators in Brittany and Jolie. Brittany has a much more vital role in this book and despite the series of events which take place her tone remains witty and sarcastic, in contrast to Jolie's more sensible voice. The paranormal mystery in Dead and Missing revolves around the Ripster group, rather than an outside entity, as they attempt to solve Drew's disappearance and the secrets of the dark side to the Paranormal Guild. This means that the reader sees each character develop further, and I felt my connection to the story strengthen, particularly during the more emotional moments. Dead and Missing has more suspense, more romance, more demons and I certainly cannot wait for more from Chris Myers!!!
Great YA Fantasy! I really enjoyed the first story in the RIPSTERS series and this second one is a terrific follow up! Dead and Missing follows Brittany, whose life is far from perfect despite what others think. Her ability to communicate with the dead and her love of all things pink make for a fun read! Throw in some creepy talking dead people and her annoying stepmom, and you have a hit! The story has a great cast of characters and I can't wait to see what they're up to in Book 3!
Yet another AMAZING novel in the Ripsters series! I can't wait to read the next one! This one is even more thrilling and exciting than the first, and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. This book is told through the point of view of Brittany also, giving an interesting look at all the other characters. Can't wait for the next one!
Carrying on from the first book, Drew goes missing in this one, and tasks have to be completed in the guild. Where did Drew go? Who is the dead girl thats after a doll? Full of mystery. I liked this book. The ending was sad though =(
Love this book and all these characters so much! It’s such a fun, creepy, intriguing story I just can’t get enough of! Oh lord it just keeps getting better and better! I love reading about these kids and their crazy ghost and demon world! It’s honestly so fascinating to dive into because you never know what you are going to get! Lol I love their dynamics of the group too!
In a departure from the first book, Dead and Missing has two alternating narrators, Jolie and her colleague and friend, Brittany, and it works very well. I particularly liked getting to know Brittany a little better since she’s so very different from Jolie and yet they share an affinity for the spirit world. Still, you have to marvel at how a diminutive goth-dressing girl and a bouncy blonde athlete who always dresses in pink could get along, much less be friends.
These two girls also differ from the norm because Jolie is the sensible, rational one while Brit tends to be sarcastic and funny, sometimes rather W.A.S.P.-ish, and it’s that reversal of expected roles that makes them so appealing. Certainly they have their occasional differences of opinion but, at heart, they are sisters. So, could they really be sisters?
That’s just one of the puzzles that come to light when Brit and Jolie set out with Reese and Hayden to save Drew, Jolie’s BFF ghost who has been snatched by demons or some such things. They also want to find out what the underground Paranormal Guild is all about and how they can gain membership, all the while being warned from all sides about how dangerous this group is. There are definitely some dark things going on but even more surprising is what the Ripsters find out about their own family members’ involvement in the world of dark supernaturals. Add to that a “lovely” little ghost girl who’s been dead for about three centuries and who indulges in biting people and let the fun begin!
Ms. Myers has a third book coming in this series (trilogy?) titled Buried in New Orleans but I can’t find any other information about it. I’m looking forward to it and hope we won’t have to wait too long because I really do want to spend more time with these kids and see what they’ll be up to next.
I thought this was a very interesting story. Told from Brittany's and Jolie's perspective (each chapter is told by either Brittany or Jolie), I was afraid it would be horrible. I was wrong. It was confusing to follow at times- remembering who was who, but over all it flowed really well. I was also afraid having not read the first in this series that I would be lost but that was not the case. This works well as a stand alone. While fishing with her BFF's friendly ghost (so Jolie can spend time with her dad), Brittany looses him and gets herself pushed in a well. Jolie and the other Ripsters were all great characters- although I am unsure about Hayden (can't put my finger on it but I feel like he is not as good a guy as everyone thinks). Jolie and the crew are trying to find Drew, get through their assigned tasks at the Guild, attend classes at regular school and at the Guild, as well as figure out who keeps trying to hurt Brittany. I thought the characters all worked well together, I LOVED the setting, the plot and story-line were great and I am looking forward to the next installment in this series. (and going back to read the first). I love the history surrounding the Salem witch trials that we are exposed to in this book and appreciate the historical accuracy of the events.
Book 2 is told from both Jolie and Brit's POV. In this book we learn more about the Guild, Jolie's dad, what happened to Brit's mom and we finally meet Jolie's grandmother. We also find out something about Brit's connection to Jolie. The Ripsters are on another case putting them in danger again. Even though Drew is a ghost , he's kidnapped and everyone but Brit tried to convince Jolie he's gone into the light. The Ripsters have been invited to join the Guild and have all passed the first level. The second level is finding something that hasnt been able to be found in over 400 years and might help get Drew back but could also help the dark side and the Twisted Sisters. Jolie's dad is one of the dark practitioners of the Guild and wants her to join the Guild with him. Jolie's mom is against her joining at all especially on her dad's side. Can Jolie decide who's right and what is right for her? Will she be able to save Drew or is it to late? Can she finally decide to let him go or is she going to chose him over Hayden? Definitely a good YA read for paranormal lovers of any age. Book 3 here I come.
This is a fun, engaging, suspenseful sequel to Date with the Dead. In this book, the reader follows Jolie and Brittany. Brittany is funny and pink while Jolie is more serious.
Drew disappears in the first chapter and from there the hunt begins. Brittany believes someone captured the dead guy, and Jolie believes he has crossed over.
Please keep writing. When is the next one coming out?
Buried in New Orleans must uncover what is special about Drew. Looking forward to more of this ghostly fun.
