Mess Hopkins #1

Sanctuary Motel

Rate this book
Mess Hopkins, proprietor of the seen-better-days Fairfax Manor Inn, never met a person in need who couldn’t use a helping hand—his helping hand. So he’s thrown open the doors of the motel to the homeless, victims of abuse, or anyone else who could benefit from a comfy bed with clean sheets and a roof overhead. This rankles his parents and uncle, who technically still own the place and are more concerned with profits than philanthropy.

When a mother and her teenage boy seek refuge from an abusive husband, Mess takes them in until they can get back on their feet. Shortly after arriving, the mom goes missing and some very bad people come sniffing around, searching for money they claim belongs to them. Mess tries to pump the boy for helpful information, but he’s in full uncooperative teen mode—grunts, shrugs, and monosyllabic answers. From what he does learn, Mess can tell he’s not getting the straight scoop. It’s not long before the boy vanishes too. Abducted? Run away? Something worse? And who took the missing money? Mess, along with his friend Vell Jackson and local news reporter Lia Katsaros, take to the streets to locate the missing mother and son—and the elusive, abusive husband—before the kneecapping loansharks find them first.

Sanctuary Motel by Alan Orloff caught my eye because of the colorful cover and the title. What kind of sanctuary? When I read the blurb, I loved the premise. He’s not rich and powerful, but what he does have, he is willing to share with those who are less fortunate and in need of a helping hand.

Many, like his parents and uncle, may think he really is a Mess, but Mess marches to the beat of a drummer they can’t understand. With the help of Cesar, who keeps the place running, and a few other unique friends, they are willing to put their life on the line when a woman and her teenage son come to stay. They never anticipated it would be as complicated as it became and the danger level rises with each turn.

The description of Sanctuary Motel by Alan Orloff being a noir crime novel fits to a T. It’s more than a cozy and less than a suspense/thriller.

Myself, I love staying in motels. Sure, they may not be the best accommodations, but I love that you can park your car right outside your door. No muss, no fuss getting to your room. They can have everything hotels have, just easier access to it. And….if they had an owner like Mess, it sure would make it interesting.

The story, for me, was Mess. A man that goes above and beyond. A man who gives more than he gets. Isn’t that outside the norm we hear about? Sure, it may seem like he lacks ambition, but I think he’s on hold until his true ‘mission’ in life appears. Could it be in the form of a woman? We shall see, since this is Book I in the Mess Hopkins series.

There is nothing wrong with Sanctuary Motel. It has all the elements for a good mystery. For me, it seems, well, not enough. I do enjoy a lighter story, a relaxing read, but I revel in white knuckled, life or death urgency that makes it impossible for me to put the book down. All that being said, I will have my eye on future Mess Hopkins novels.

The Fairfax Manor Inn may be a bit run down (and the adjoining mini golf course may have seen its last hole in one) but the motel is a place of generosity and philanthropy thanks to Mess Hopkins who has a heart of gold and makes a wonderfully engaging protagonist. I think most of us would agree with his view: ‘So many people in this world . . . needed help. And not just a cup of sugar or a hand moving a heavy sleeper sofa into the basement. Serious life-changing help.’ Unfortunately his Uncle Phil, who has been given reponsibility for overseeing the business in the absence of Mess’s parent, would be the exception.

Mess forms a really touching relationship with Kevin, the teenage son of the missing woman, although doing so takes a lot of patience. By the way, if you’re wondering how Mess got his nickname, you’ll have to read the book.

I loved the cast of secondary characters, particularly Mess’s friend and sidekick, Vell, who has a seemingly inexhaustible list of contacts. He boasts, ‘I got my own personal Internet, on the streets. People see me coming, they’re dying to tell me stuff. Think of me like Vellipedia.’ I also really enjoyed the back-and-forth banter between Mess and Vell. Mama (although she’s actually Vell’s grandmother) is another fantastic, larger than life character. She has a laugh ‘like a thunderstorm’, is a giver of huge bear hugs, has turned her ability to read people into a money-making venture and believes there’s no such thing as a table with too much food. Just as well, as both Vell and Kevin, have seemingly insatiable appetites.

If Mess and Vell are the good guys then of course you need some bad guys to even things up and the author provides us with plenty, including the missing woman’s abusive husband and some heavies working for the local organised crime head honcho. Mess and Vell have some narrow escapes and in the process of resolving the mystery of the disappearance of Kevin’s mother uncover some distinctly dirty goings-on.

A motel with its ever changing population of guests is a great location around which to base a crime mystery series so I’m looking forward to future arrivals at Fairfax Manor Inn, plus seeing if its owner can avoid making a ‘mess’ (sorry!) of his budding relationship with Lia.

Sanctuary Motel is an enjoyable crime mystery with a plot that will keep you guessing and characters you’ll find yourself rooting for.

Mess, is, well, a Mess. But he has a good heart and a motel in Virginia that he uses to help people down on their luck. But then Kevin and his mother Nicole arrive and things start to go awry. Soon Nicole goes missing and Mess is left to care for her enigmatic son. But where had Nicole gone off to? And is Kevin telling Mess the truth about what really happened with her new husband.

This is fast-paved novel with a whole slew of interesting and diverse characters. I especially liked Vell, the former college basketball player. There’s Cesar and The Coach, and slimy crime beat reporter. Jimmy the bookie. Mama was hoot, too. All these character help the kind-hearted Mess search for Nicole, and then Kevin.

Mess, literally, finds himself in a mess of a situation. His uncle wants the motel to be more profitable. He has a missing woman on his hands, and her abusive husband is not taking his intrusion into their lives lightly. All this makes for an entertaining and fast-paced read.

I really enjoyed the plot and characters in this novel, and can’t wait to see what mess Mess gets into next. Highly recommended!

Mess is one big mess, but a lovable one with a huge heart.

This book is a combination of a mystery/suspense novel with heart. Mess runs his family's motel but tends to rent rooms to those who need a hand up in life. This doesn't make a few people happy, primarily the manager and his Uncle Phillip. His parents are traveling the world, and we don't see them, but his Uncle has inserted himself into the motel and Mess' life. Let's just say the uncle is a busybody, and while he might have good intentions, he certainly doesn't know how to insert himself into Mess' life so that he is appreciated versus scorned.

I enjoyed this book immensely. I liked Mess' desire to help those who needed help, the characters that were developed and had some depth to them, and the potential for future installments in a series. I think with time, Mess could be a really good social worker, but he needs to work on some of his skills, like creating rapport with teenagers. He forges a relationship with Kevin, but it takes the whole book for it to finally click for these two. Of course, Kevin is your typical teenager (15) and makes some decisions that are not wise for him or those around him.

Mess' friend Vell and his grandmother, Mama, are adorable. I wanted to join them at Mama's house for lunch and conversation. She is the one that sends many of those that Mess helps his way. I'm not sure who has the bigger heart! I don't think Mess could have worked things out in the end without their help. Or help from Lia, a reporter doing a story on the motel. Mess and Lia are attracted to one another, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. There is more to come for these two.

The mystery/suspense portion of the book is very light. I would almost consider this general fiction, but there are some portions of the book that are filled with action and a bit of mystery about where a certain item disappeared.

There are multiple facets to this story, and they all blend well together. I am looking forward to more from this author and this series...or at least hoping there is another story because there are some unanswered questions, at least for me.

We give this book 5 paws up.

In Fairfax, Virginia, there is a small motel with 14 units, 11 available for customers. Of course, paying guests are welcome. The vital thing to know is if you need a temporary roof over your head, make your way to the Fairfax Manor Inn. Mess is the man to see. He'll take care of your needs, beginning with a room, a port of refuge, providing sanctuary if you're in a storm of life and have nowhere else to turn.

Mess is aware that every story is different. Needs are different. Anticipation of Nicole and her 15-year-old son Kevin's needs is off base as the newest arrivals test Mess and his network of friends beyond first impressions. That first turn is the captivating moment when the reader becomes gripped by the trauma and begins the harried pace.

I loved Mess and his network of friends, who all have networks too. The character development gives just enough to tell their stories – those that help and those in need. Together they are a motley bunch. All are easily underestimated.

One more thing. As part of the welcome spiel, Mess will advise you to get food next door if you're hungry and put it on his tab. When he shares the place's name, he's telling you about all of it – the motel, the café, himself, his friends – Hole Lotta Love. Meet up! Tbr or better yet, pre-order. You'll think so too!

Thank you to Alan Orloff, Level Best Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book.

Sanctuary Motel was a truly captivating and engaging novel! One of the aspects I loved the most was exploring the rich relationships that Mess had with various characters throughout the story. His friendship with Vell, in particular, added a beautiful layer of depth to the narrative. Additionally, the introduction of Nicole and Kevin as new charges at the motel brought a fresh dynamic to the plot, making the story even more intriguing.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I couldn't help but wish for a deeper exploration of Mess's relationship with his hotel manager, Cesar. Their business relationship/friendship showed promise and had great potential to contribute even more to the overall storyline.

The book's pace was quick, which made it a delightful and easy read, and the jaw-dropping twist at the end left me in awe. It's always a pleasure to discover such talented authors, and I eagerly look forward to reading more from this gifted writer.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to both NetGalley and Level Best Books for providing me with an advanced copy of Sanctuary Motel in exchange for an honest review. Rest assured, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.#SanctuaryMotel #NetGalley

This was a very entertaining book and a quick read. I won this in a Goodreads giveaway and especially enjoyed it because it pulled in a lot of references to the DMV area. A wonderful story about how caring for people can get you into a lot of trouble, but sometimes it all works out in the end anyway.

It's an easy read. And I finished it in just a day. Word building is so simple. Well intended characterisation of the MC. He is such a messy person himself yet always down to help others from a mess. Oh yes that's his name. Mess Hopkins.

Mess's friend Vell was a funny and subtly smart guy.

The mama (Vell's grandma) was so sweet and lovable and strong. The relationship between mama and the 2 boys were so adorable. Even though she comes in just a few chapters she has my whole heart.

The love interest of Mess was a sweet lady and the part where they show interest on each other was written with care and sweetness overloaded.

This novel is not just a mystery novel; it talks about the complexities of human relationships and the importance of empathy. It highlights the significance of a society / community and the heights people will reach to protect those who are in need. It pours in lot of information on handling a teenager.

No major twists apart from 2 or 3 basic turns.

One thing I can't really stand is the MC being so dumb. He was clueless from the beginning. How could one get betrayed and keep on asking for more from the same person. My anxiety got triggred reading it..

Every so often I like to delve into something a little different to what I usual devour. When I saw the blurb for this book, I thought, well, this could be my latest palate cleanser, or even bonne bouche!
So... Mess Hopkins has "inherited" the Fairfax Manor Inn, a motel previously run by his parents. He is overseen by his uncle, just to make sure he doesn't run it into the ground. But apart from that, he is pretty much left to his own devices! Which is good cos, being of the kindly sort (understatement) he keeps throwing open the doors to all and sundry who are in need of help. Mostly gratis. This doesn't sit well with his olds who are mostly only concerned about money, but, to date he has managed to keep the wolves from the door.
This story really starts when he is asked by a friend to help a mother and her teenage boy who are seeking refuge from her abusive husband. A relatively simple task, you'd think. Hole up in the Inn for a bit whilst they find their feet. But pretty much as soon as they arrive, the mother disappears and strange people come a knocking for them. Apparently there's some missing money, and some nasty people want it back...
And so begins quite a convoluted and interconnected tale of, well, quite a lot actually as Mess tries to not only keep up with all the shenanigans, but also as he strives to try and get a step ahead. All without getting caught in the crossfire himself...
Well, this one hit the ground running and didn't really let up until the very end. Yes there were parts that were a little messy and confusing for me but, on the whole, the plotting was pretty tight and the destination was definitely well worth a bit of a bumpy ride in getting there.
Characters were well drawn if a tad on the larger than life side. But that fitted in well with the style of the rest of the book. I took to Mess straight away. Bit of a maverick with a good heart, what's not to like! And I thought he conducted himself very well indeed considering he really didn't know what he was doing half the time. But I guess bumbling in works sometimes! Special mentions also to Vell and Lia who make great supporting characters. Looking forward to them developing along the way.
Pacing was good and fit the narrative all the way through, slowing down alongside the characters confusion and ramping up once again when a lead was discovered.
And the best thing of all, there's a mini golf course next to the motel. Love a spot of crazy golf me :) No... only kidding, it's that it's a first in series. This means that I don't have to say goodbye to Mess, and that makes me happy. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

This is being called book one of the Mess Hopkins series, which I hope means we’ll see the protagonist of this book staring in more stories in the future. Yes, people really do call him Mess. He’s got a real name which I’ve forgotten, but you’ll see it mentioned once or twice if you read the book. His mom started calling him Mess when he was a kid and it stuck as a nickname. With a name like that it makes sense that he runs a family-owned dive motel. He’s the boss there. In reality he has a manager who takes care of most of the important stuff while Mess is causing and then getting out of various messes. (Not what his mom had in mind when she nicknamed him that.) While the manager likes to rent the rooms of the motel out to paying customers, the number of actual paying customers tends to be fairly small, at least partially because Mess makes a habit of offering free temporary housing to those in need.

While there are a few other people Mess helps in this book, the main story focuses on a mother who flees an abusive husband with her teen son. Mess gives them a place to stay while mom figures out her next steps. Then things get complicated putting Mess in the position of trying to work out a few mysteries when the Mom disappears and other unexpected things happen. I liked the mystery and suspense aspects of the book which ultimately define the genre of the story, but I also found Mess and his approach to life and helping people to be a positive in the story and an interesting springboard to the main parts of the story.

Mess Hopkins is not a particularly ambitious man, but he wants to do something worthwhile with his life. He accomplishes his goal by offering a helping hand to several people-in-need at a time. Running the Fairfax Manor Inn, his parents’ less-than-luxurious motel, while they travel the world isn’t the most glamourous job, but it’s comfortable and provides Mess with a place to live, as well as the perfect opportunity to provide refuge to those suffering hardship. At least it will be until his parents discover their beloved business is losing money.

When his friend, Vell Jackson, brings a bruised woman fleeing from an abusive husband and her surly fifteen-year-old son to the motel, Mess has no choice but to give them a safe, no cost place to stay until they can make other arrangements. But, no good deed goes unpunished, and it isn’t long before his life becomes an even bigger mess than that of his childhood nickname.

Soon after their arrival, the mother vanishes, leaving her recalcitrant son, Kevin, behind in Mess’s care. With the help of Lia Katsaros, a beautiful newspaper reporter and his friend Vell, Mess scrambles to uncover the truth behind Nicole’s and Kevin’s complicated story before an all-too tragic ending is written.

With its well-crafted characters, interesting plot and satisfying ending, award-winning author Alan Orloff’s “Sanctuary Motel: A Mess Hopkins Novel” is everything I look for when choosing a book to read. I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.

Alan Orloff had an eclectic (some might say disjointed) career. As an engineer, he worked on nuclear submarines, supervised assembly workers in factories, facilitated technology transfer from the Star Wars program, and learned to stack washing machines three high in a warehouse with a forklift. He even started his own recycling and waste reduction newsletter business. Now he writes fiction.

The emotional character development in this book is beautiful. I discovered Alan when he asked if I would read his book, “I Play One on TV,” and I love his writing style.

The flow and pacing is perfect. The build-up and mystery are fantastic and engaging. The storyline has everything you want from an edgy thriller.

I loved the premise behind Mess and who he is as a person. The compassion, empathy, and beautiful humanity were such a vivid reminder that being a good human is a responsibility we should all strive for.

I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. I love how easy it is to get lost in an Orloff novel. His writing style is so smooth, and he creates such dynamic stories and characters.

Mess has been charged with running the motel while his parents are seeing the world. He hates to see abused women and is always trying to give them a place to stay to avoid abusive relationships. Escaping the beatings and abuse is not easy for the victims and Mess is risking his own life at times to aid these unfortunates.

The Fairfax Motor Inn is not exactly the pride of Fairfax. His current charges are a battered woman and her son. The son, Kevin, is not happy with the situation and causes many problems.

The rub is that the mother does not want to be saved either. There are those who seem to feel that the two might be hiding a bag of cash and now both mother and son have disappeared. Things could get messy indeed.

This book is a fun read about a do-gooder and a fifteen-year-old dropout. Anyone tasked with raising a fifteen-year-old never-do-well will identify! Enjoy! 4.5 stars – CE Williams

I really warmed to Mess, the owner of the Fairfax Manor Inn and the main character of this book. He's a relatable guy - life didn't really pan out the way he expected (not that he had any firm views as to what it would look like) and he's fallen into running his parents motel and living on site. What's great about him though, is that he's decided to try and do some tangible good in the community by opening the doors to people in need, and helping them get back on their feet with no judgment of how they wound up on his doorstep.

This open-arms policy is what leads to Mess finding himself slap bang in the middle of a whole heap of ever-widening drama that takes in domestic abuse, local hoodlums and corruption. With his loyal friend Vell, he enlists the help of others to save two of his guests from being dragged under by the weight of their circumstances. what follows is an interesting and oftentimes funny story. I felt at times that it was a little too fast-paced, sometimes things happened and weren't given the space they maybe needed to be fully absorbed.

Well-written characters and great descriptions of the world they inhabit make this a promising first book in what looks to be a series, with Mess at the middle.

Mess Hopkins is a breath of fresh air! A motel owner who cares more about people than making money, he takes in Nicole and her teenage son, Kevin, for a few days as they try to make a fresh start away from abusive husband and step-father, Todd.

A diverse set of characters assist Mess when Nicole disappears. His friend Vell, a former basketball player, and Vell’s mom, a psychic, along with Mess’s new girlfriend Lia, and his motel manager, Cesar, become involved in what turns out to be not only a missing persons case and domestic abuse, but also a dangerous encounter with organized crime.

Author Alan Orloff’s witty writing style results in a fun, easy read. The dialogue flows smoothly, and Mess’ first-person narration is laugh-out-loud humorous. It reminds me of Janet Evanovich’s Plum series. Crime fiction with humor and a dash of romance.

I loved the setting with its typical old-style motel and run-down mini-golf course. There is just the right amount of description to help the reader visualize the scenes and get drawn into the center of the action.

If you love mysteries that are a mix of cozy and traditional, funny but with a touch of noir, this will be right up your alley. Good Samaritan and amateur sleuth, Mess Hopkins, won’t disappoint!

n Virginia there is a 14 unit motel with 11 rooms available to rent. The owner, Mess, has a big heart and enjoys to help people. He will give you a place to stay for free or for very little to get you out of a bad situation and back on your feet. Mess knows that everyone is different and some are there longer than others. Nicole and her son Kevin arrive at the motel and things get crazy. Nicole vanishes and Mess takes it into his hands and his network to find her and figure out what is going on. Throughout this whole ordeal Mess uncovers a huge story within the community.
Mess really grows as a character throughout the book. In the beginning he is very carefree and just wants to help but towards the end he still loves helping and it just felt like he matured and saw a new perspective. Mess will go through great lengths to help anyone who needs it and he even has certain people who will do the same. He doesn’t care about making money but he cares about helping those who come forward asking for it.

A slow, but interesting read. A fun crime mystery that keeps you guessing until the end with some action scenes.

Mess is the owner of a motel that serves people with unfortunate circumstances. A few of these unfortunate soles are an abused Mom and her teenage son. Not only is she trying to leave behind an abusive relationship, but also trying to hide from some loan sharks. As the two of them are staying at the motel, the mom goes missing. This story follows Mess as he tries to find the mom and get her to safety.

While this story finishes for the mom and her son, we are left with many unanswered questions about Mess. There are a couple side characters that I really enjoyed throughout the book, Vell and Lia, and wanted more with them. This seems to be a great book for a series.

Thank you to Netgalley and Alan Orloff for the Free Ebook. This review is 100% my own and honest opinion.

Sanctuary Motel is a light hearted mystery suspense novel that happen to be right up my alley. It's set in Fairfax, Virginia and is about a guy named Mess Hopkins that mangeres his faimly small dive motel, the Fairfax Motor Inn. Mess is a kind soul that wants to help people. To his families dismay, he uses the Motel as a sanctuary for lost causes that come his way. The only one on his side seens to be Cesar, the building manger. He has a good friend Vell Jackson that brings him these lost causes. In his case, he brings him Nicole, a woman who's left her abusive husband, and her fifteen year old son Kevin. But then disappears leaving Kevin behind. Those starts he mystery of finding Nicole and uncovering tje truth. I liked Mess, Ceser, Vell, Lia, and Mama (Vells grandmother), and Lia, the reporter lady and Mess's love interest. It was also a great read with a mystery and plenty of suspense.

The cover drew me into a book that shows human kindness, detective work and mysterious characters, an easy read for a lazy day!
The main character Mess runs a motel, almost into the ground, his compassionate side wants to help those in need. Dangerous situations lead to suspense and drama, people are disappearing!
This story explores difficult and intertwined relationships, the characters are all busy meeting their own needs while Mess is trying to make everyone’s life easier.
There’s plenty going on as the story develops, sometimes a bit too much to think about. The characters all seem to be left to grow into their own story? I liked the idea that all of the characters were worthy of further exploration.

Thanks to the Publisher, NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this book.

An excellent noir mystery/thriller, with unforgettable characters, some in trouble, some with hearts of gold, some with bad intentions, and some with greed practically wafting out of their pores. Mess absolutely has a heart of gold, even if it hurts the motel his parents left him to run, and that's part of what made me like him so much. He also offers some comedic relief at times, which is a nice break from the tension that ramps up as the story goes on. I appreciated how Orloff depicted Nicole and her son - it was believable without falling into the cliché category. The story moves along at a smooth pace, and the descriptions help draw you into the story. I have to admit, when initially reading the description of the motel's appearance, my first thought was the Bates Motel from the TV show. But this one is so much less creepy. If you enjoy noir suspense mysteries, you're not going to want to miss this one!

Truly perfect for fans of modern thrillers- Orloff manages to narrate an elegantly-woven mystery through the perspective of Mess Hopkins, a magnanimous motel proprietor balancing the approval of his family with the unfortunate (and unintended) penalties of his kindness.

While aiding a mother and son seeking refuge from a dangerous domestic crisis, Mess is thrust into complicated family dynamics and a tangled web of secrecy, and must enlist the help of his closest friends and allies to protect his motel and the family he has sworn to care for.

Sanctuary Motel is a truly compelling novel that keeps the reader hooked with a meticulous balance of action and suspense. Contrary to many mystery novels, it also shows the complexity of several perspectives, and highlights the importance of standing up for the people you care about.

5/5 stars.

Sanctuary Motel was a solid read!

It tells the story of a witty gentleman that was left to run a motel by his traveling parents. His compassionate heart overpowers his desire to turn profits on the motel as he takes in people in bad situations and helps them turn their lives around. His entire life turns upside down when a mom and her teenage son show up in need of his help and the situation spirals out of his control leaving him unsure of the right thing to do or who to trust.

I loved the powerful friendship between Mess and Vell, Mama’s sweet and spicy attitude, and the banter between Mess and the motel manager, Cesar.

I think there could have been a little more development and story shared on Nicole and Kevin but overall really enjoyed the book.

I definitely was not expecting the final twist at the end!

I received a free copy of this book from Level Best Media through netgalley.com. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Mess Hopkins is running his parents Motel. Although Mess is more interested in helping his fellow man than actually making a profit. Often discounting rooms for those in need, lending his car and using his motel as a safe house for women needing an escape from an abusive situation. Mess should have gone to school for business, instead he chose social work and it shows.

Mess has taken in a mother and her son who are escaping an abusive ex husband and that's when the trouble begins. Fast paced with lots of twists and turns this is a fun often humorous book about mobsters, psychics and those who are just trying to help their fellow man. I think this may be the beginning of a series and if so it's off to a fun start.

Alan Orloff is a prize-winning author and has written mysteries, short stories and young adult books. His new book, Sanctuary Motel, can be read by people of any age. It is a crime novel but light on violence and sex. It’s almost a cozy. Mess Hopkins owns a run-down motel that he regularly uses to help the homeless and victims of abuse. He puts philanthropy above profit. When a mother and her teenage son move in he has to help them escape their abusive husband, only to discover that the criminals and her husband are after her for money she has supposedly stolen. He has a very entertaining voice with fun dialogue and wisecracks. His wacky family and friends add to the humor. This is a very entertaining book with very sympathetic characters and had me laughing throughout. Highly recommended.

Alan S. Orloff’s SANCTUARY MOTEL

It was a pleasure to read this excellent, smooth, clever prose, and with such a satisfying ending! Mess (nickname, seems to fit) shelters those who need a safe spot for a fresh start, somewhat to the detriment of the motel’s bottom line, but he values helping others more. Mama sends her son Vell to bring a mother and son to safety. Sandy feeds them at her bagel shop, Hole Lotta Love . . . so many people to admire and love here. Ordinary people can be heroes!
The bad guys are scary. What happened to Nicole? What will happen to son Kevin, barely in his teens? All is not quite as it seems, and getting answers is risky and difficult . . . and fun to read about.

Mess inherited the motel from his parents. He uses the motel to help others in their time of need. Mess gets himself involved in quiet a situation and works to figure out exactly what sent this mother/son duo into his motel.

Written with very good detail. The characters are written in a way that you can actual picture them. I love how detailed he was in his descriptions. I found myself able to paint a picture of the motel as well as the surrounding town. The story line was thrilling and exciting and just when I thought the story was over, there was one final twist at the end. Highly recommend this book to any thriller readers.

This book was the definition of a page-turner. I flew through the novel and was barely able to put it down at times!

The mystery and suspense kept me on my toes. The plot was engaging and felt genuine. And the characters were incredibly believable.

Initially it felt a little unrealistic for Mess and Vell to not call the police as soon as they discovered Nicole was missing, but, as the story unfolded it made more sense. Life isn’t so simple, especially for those less fortunate.

The writing itself was no frills! This helped keep the pace and made it a super quick read! I personally really appreciate this style of writing in a mystery/suspense; there’s nothing more frustrating than unnecessary ‘fluffy’ dialogue when you’re bursting to find out what happened!

Sanctuary Motel was an intriguing read!

I really enjoyed seeing the relationships Mess had with his friend Vell, his new charges Nicole and Kevin, and his hotel manager Cesar. I would have like to see a greater storyline develop with Cesar, as I think the author could have expanded on their business relationship/friendship and it would have contributed to the overall story.

This was a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed with a jaw dropping twist at the end. I am looking forward to reading more by this author!
