“A Place of Smoke & Shadows” by Ellie Sanders, is Book 1 in “The Fae Girl” series. It’s a fresh look at magical ability and is in that way reminiscent of Carissa Broadbent’s “Daughter of No Worlds” series. But it’s a lot more than that. It’s a Fae story, but not a fairy tale, please check trigger warnings as this book gets a bit dark at times.
The FMC Alice Gifford is an orphan living in England and attending a boarding school she despises. Very suddenly, she has inherited a mansion, and with it, decides to step bravely into a “new life, new Alice” mindset. After exploring the grounds and being inexplicably chased by a member of her new staff, she tumbles from a fall in a swamp into a world she didn’t know existed. Finding out that she’s become Fae opens up an entire new aspect to everything. Suddenly she’s not Alice the orphan or brand new Alice of Hollingshurst Hall, she’s a Fae, and that’s a dangerous distinction now. Kingdoms are at war, and want to possess her and force her to use her magic for their benefit. She finds her footing and decides she will not be anyone’s pawn, and watching her come into her power is a pleasure to watch.
The MMC is Fain, the High King’s brother. He’s been brought up to believe that all Fae lead you astray and manipulate you with their beauty and powers. But he also admires her backbone, as all the women he has ever known are submissive and treat him with respect due to his royal station. He is of two minds about Alice for a while, but when he falls, he falls hard. His love for her is believably built up and is a great example of slow-to-trust enemies to lovers.
The story starts out a little disorienting to Alice and to the reader, but the world building acclimates you well and prepares you for the plot-driven second half. There are so many elements to the plot, side characters, and twists and turns that will ensure you’ll stay interested. The book features enemies to lovers, hidden identity, suspense, intrigue, found family, unique magic, and is told in dual points of view.
This is a fresh look at fantasy magic and I think anyone who enjoys the genre would love this book.
