I was provided an ARC of this book courtesy of Romance Me with Books. Below is my honest review.
Fae stories are new for me in terms of fantasy and I haven't read many of them yet. But this book is unlike any of the others I have read. The Fae part was so interesting and different. It was such a great twist on the typical Fae fantasy arcs out there. I enjoyed that and the magic building that progressed throughout the book too since it wasn't overly complex.
But, perhaps my favorite part, was the dual POV between the two main characters. I hadn't read many romantasy books like that before this one (really only a chapter here and there that has another POV), so I loved reading and learning about both characters throughout the entire book via their unique POVs. It was great and made the story a lot more interesting for me.
The main reasons it's not a five-star read for me are the weak enemies-to-lovers trope and the lack of world-building. I feel like I don't know much about the world (both the world Alice starts in and the one she's in throughout most of the book). I wanted to know more about the world as I think it would have added more to the story.
Overall this book was a really easy read and I finished it in a few days. It was fast-paced and not overly complex like other romantasy books out there. I plan to continue the story because I want to know what happens with Fain and Alice!
I am very annoyed that I need to be an adult and go to sleep, when all I want is to crack open book 2 and get lost in their world. This book wonderfully drags out the story and conflict. There's action, fae and just the right amount of spice. I cant wait to see what comes next!
This book has a very interesting concept of Fae. I have read so many Fae books and this is different. We start following Alice the orphan who lives in a whole other world from her own.
The world she stumbled into is where magic, kings, and other things exist, but the strange thing is she is the mythical creature in this story. She is a Fae just because she came from a different world.
All Fae by default belong to the High King and of course, everyone wants her because faes are difficult to come across.
This feels like a darker fantasy that in the beginning felt like Alice just jumped into wonderland dazed and confused. She just needs to figure out a way to survive this world and probably accept her fate. Maybe accept being in this new world she's in.
I enjoyed the book for what it was. It was interesting and the characters were rather complex. Especially the MMC since anyone is forbidden to touch the fae girl. There is also a bit of dislike between the characters so it does have enemies to lovers aspect to it. And then he strangely dreams about her every night. These aren't just ordinary dreams, but sultry AF dreams and he thinks he is being bewitched by Alice.
I am hoping to know more about the world and the lore and who knows get to know if there are other creatures other than Fae. So if you like:
🌙Enemies to lovers 🌙Fae 🌙Betrayal and lies plus angst 🌙Close Proximity 🌙Slow to medium burn 🌙Magic system that is easy to understand
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 This was a slow to start read for me…by chapter 3 I was in it & by the half way mark I was fully invested
Alice had a pretty miserable life growing up…her parent had died & she was left with an uncle that didn’t know what to do with her….why not leave her in a boarding school where she is bullied daily
Her uncle passes & she has inherited everything…including a mansion on a rather large piece of property & a groundskeeper that doesn’t want her there…24 hrs later she’s taking a walk checking out the property when she is chased by said groundskeeper….while hiding she ends up in another world/dimension & no clue how she got there or how to get back to where she belongs….enter Prince Fain
He hates her because she is a Fae but deep down you can tell he’s only fooling himself…Fae are magical creatures & Alice must be pulling one over on him or is she??? He’s been heart broken before because of a Fae but maybe this time will be different….then of course what’s a fantasy book without a Great War & having to defeat every enemy out there
The book ended on a cliffhanger but can be read as a stand-alone…I do love that BUT I need to find out what happens in book 2 A Place of Truth & Lies
First off I'm not a great consumer of the Fae/ fairy genre but I have thoroughly enjoyed Ellie Sanders other stories so was prepared to give this title a fair chance of exploring. I was surprisingly relieved to have enjoyed it to the degree I did. From the very beginning I was captured by this tale and am glad I continued on with this creative story. Loved the characters and the simple ability to just get 'lost' in this fantastically created world.

Omg this book was fantastic I literally devoured it and I’m so sad that it’s over and I can’t wait until the second book! This is Alice’s story and it’s a Split POV with Fain so you get a dual sense of the story! Alice is so sweet and kind but also has a low self esteem and with her background it’s no wonder why! This is a fated mates, enemies to lovers, and a touch her and die and it is spicy so keep that in mind! Fain is kind of an asshole but he starts to eventually grow on you and you start to like if not outright love him! I was enthralled with the authors idea of fae and how much different it is from other authors! I would definitely recommend reading this and I will definitely be rereading it as well!
This is my first time reading a book by Ellie Sanders. I had no idea what to expect other than a new take on Fae, and let me tell you, I ATE IT UP.
I loved Alice's character development and Fain is to die for. The magic system in this book is intriguing and I cannot wait to see what comes in book two.
It is my understanding that this is a 5 book series, and I'm hooked and can't wait to read more.

ARC review - from Romance Me with Books A Place of Smoke and Shadows by Ellie Sanders I always love a good romantacy book. This one is about a girl who falls through into a new world and everyone tells her she is a magical fae. That’s basically every romantacy readers dream! In this world, fae are powerful and they want her to fight for them in an ongoing war. She will need to decide whether to hide or fight. To make a new home here or try and run. I liked most of the characters, especially the prince. It’s a dual POV which I always enjoy. I also really like the female camaraderie between the main character and the women assigned to watch over her. The first two chapters were a bit slow but then all the sudden you’re thrown into a new, confusing world. I would’ve loved a little more world building but I suppose we are learning right along side the main character. Spice level is about a 2 out of 5. Oh and I always love a book that starts out with a map! I will definitely read the next book in the series. If you like fast paced, light spice, fantasy, I recommend this book. There are a few trigger warnings provided by the author I would recommend reading before starting this book.
This is the first time i have read a book of the author so going into the story i was not familiar with her writing style to connect the reader with her books. I was giving the opportunity to read an ARC of the book and overall I did like the book.
What I liked about the book: The authors approach for her fae character, it was different from other fae books that i have read in the past. I loved that from book one we have dual POVs of the MFC and MMC. Enemies to lovers trope, although i feel it was just a hint of it. The relationship of high prince and high king, it nice to see that the high King actually cares for his brother in his own way and vice versa. My favorite character in the book is Fain, just love him, the author wrote his character well. The cover design for the book love it, it draws you in, i am a sucker for buying books just for the cover. I would love to own this book to display the front cover on one of my book shelves.
My dislikes of the book: There were areas of the book where the plot of story needed more development because at the start of the book it was confusing and i had questions with no answers. Then towards the end of the book overload of information and lot going on. I also wanted more development of fain and alice's relationship, yes there was an attraction but there was still no relationship building in the book. At 86% reading point of the story, they admit they know nothing about each other, but yet there is a connection between them and are in love. As for Alice sometimes i did not like her character in the story, Fain is my favorite because he was more well written than Alice. I do believe the author created her to be a strong female personality and outspoken but sometimes she irritated me. Disliked the transition from her world to the new realm, i still want to know why Sebastian attacked her when she was just in the forest exploring, i get this is what leads to her to stumble into the muddy swamp and into the new world but that just came out of nowhere in the book.
This is the first book of the series so i am warning you it does end in a cliffhanger, and i still am intrigued to continue to read the rest of the series.

“A Place of Smoke & Shadows” by Ellie Sanders, is Book 1 in “The Fae Girl” series. It’s a fresh look at magical ability and is in that way reminiscent of Carissa Broadbent’s “Daughter of No Worlds” series. But it’s a lot more than that. It’s a Fae story, but not a fairy tale, please check trigger warnings as this book gets a bit dark at times.
The FMC Alice Gifford is an orphan living in England and attending a boarding school she despises. Very suddenly, she has inherited a mansion, and with it, decides to step bravely into a “new life, new Alice” mindset. After exploring the grounds and being inexplicably chased by a member of her new staff, she tumbles from a fall in a swamp into a world she didn’t know existed. Finding out that she’s become Fae opens up an entire new aspect to everything. Suddenly she’s not Alice the orphan or brand new Alice of Hollingshurst Hall, she’s a Fae, and that’s a dangerous distinction now. Kingdoms are at war, and want to possess her and force her to use her magic for their benefit. She finds her footing and decides she will not be anyone’s pawn, and watching her come into her power is a pleasure to watch.
The MMC is Fain, the High King’s brother. He’s been brought up to believe that all Fae lead you astray and manipulate you with their beauty and powers. But he also admires her backbone, as all the women he has ever known are submissive and treat him with respect due to his royal station. He is of two minds about Alice for a while, but when he falls, he falls hard. His love for her is believably built up and is a great example of slow-to-trust enemies to lovers.
The story starts out a little disorienting to Alice and to the reader, but the world building acclimates you well and prepares you for the plot-driven second half. There are so many elements to the plot, side characters, and twists and turns that will ensure you’ll stay interested. The book features enemies to lovers, hidden identity, suspense, intrigue, found family, unique magic, and is told in dual points of view.
This is a fresh look at fantasy magic and I think anyone who enjoys the genre would love this book.
❀ 𝐀𝐑𝐂 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 ❀ So, this was a bit of a rollercoaster... The term fae has a different meaning in this book compared to those I've previously read from other authors, but strangely it didn't bother me! It wasn't difficult to understand and the terms of the book were explained quite early on, so I wasn't confused 😆 Alice is a bit insecure and her backstory and past experiences have made her untrusting, but I think that made me like her more. I mean, if I was suddenly transported to a land where everyone dressed and acted differently and told me that I'm from another world... Well, I think I'd be having some major trust issues 😂 And I love how her name is Alice... And she fell... Into a new land... *wink wink* Fain is the epitome of a protector. He's moody and broody and strong and just everything the term "alpha male" represents for me. He's 100% obsessed with Alice and the way that is portrayed is actually more intricate than I'd first thought it was. He has some very confusing feelings about her and that inner conflict just makes a world of difference! And the romance was actually enemies to lovers because nobody liked each other even the slightest bit in the beginning! Like, they actually hated each other in their very cores! However there was a very large portion of the book where nothing really happened. Seeing as it's a very long book (77 chapters in particular) I thought that there would be more! It started off really strong and it was so different that my expectations were incredibly high... And then once we got through a few revelations everything seemed to sort of... Pause. And then 20 chapters later it was still paused. So that tired me out incredibly so, and I had huge trouble finishing the book... However things picked back up around chapter 60 so the ending was MORE than pleasing hehe 🤭
Holy smokes, this book is a masterpiece! I don’t know where to even start!!! The concept behind this beautifully written story is so unquestionably unique, I’m not sure how anyone couldn’t get fully sucked into A Place of Smoke & Shadows! Fae books are extremely popular right now, justly so, but the fae in this series are beyond brilliant. I will keep the fae history a surprise and not spoil the details as I think learning as you read is so significantly impactful.
Alice, our amazing FMC, starts out as a meek human in London with no family or friends to call her own. She gets transported to another world and Alice’s life starts to spiral. By the end of book one she transforms into a confident fae who is going to do everything in her power to take control of her own fate. Our MMC, Fain, is bastard brother to the High King, and commander of his army. He hates fae and is annoyed he has to procure the latest one to enter their world. The fae is working her charms on him, drawing him in, but he starts to learn that something more powerful than her tricks is enchanting him.
In this new world Alice has fallen into, women are property and are expected to be submissive and obey men. The fae belong to the High King and are used for their powers and nothing more. As knowledge of Alice in the kingdom grows, so does the danger of being kidnapped, or worse, killed for her power.
This book will lift you off your feet and into a world of fantasy that will leave you breathless. You will not regret entering this realm of lust and intrigue. I truly could not recommend a better read.
Lots of mixed feelings about this book. First off you can tell the author put a lot of effort into this book and I appreciate that. The concept was really interesting giving me a different fae tale, switching things up. My biggest issue was that I felt like the plot got bogged down too many times with redundant events while the action would just pop up out of nowhere every time with little to no reason. So much detail seemed to go into the more redundant events with the same detail being dropped when anything exciting happened. The characters also felt like they were wearing too thick of plot armor. Any issues were solved so quickly they rarely had any gravity with a "well that was easy, barely an inconvenience" feel. Also having any one get gravely injured and then just being perfectly fine the next moment also takes any impact out of the events. Character development was very slow but then suddenly went super sonic the last few chapters which was frustrating when reading a long book. It felt like some random switch was flipped, quite jarring after such a slow pace and not in a good way. Spice wasn't really the focus at all, not sexy, not romantic, just kinda there for a bit and used for a plot point. Despite all my criticism it's not a bad book but not as satisfying as I hoped it would be with its long length. Not sure I want to commit to the next one after losing nearly all interest in the plot at the end because nothing really happened and what did happen really didn't matter at the end.

A Place of Smoke & Shadows is book 1 in a 5 book 'The Fae Girl' series. This is an enemies-to-lovers, spicy surprise, and is not a typical fairytale Fae story. I went into this book blind as I do with all books, so it did take me a moment to get acclimated to what was going on with the FMC. Ellie Sanders did a wonderful job with world-building and provided the details needed for me to be fully transported into the story. The plot is quite fascinating and different from other Fae stories I've read. The author did a great job explaining the dynamics of all of the relationships among the main and secondary characters. I enjoyed how Alice developed throughout, and the development of Alice and Fain's connection. I am grateful the author included dual POVs as I feel that kept me interested. Overall, this was a fun read. There is a good mix of unanswered questions, twists, spice, and drama. As it is the first book in a series, it does end on a cliffhanger that will have you ready to read the next book.
Thank you Ellie Sanders and Romance Me With Books for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Definitely check the triggers to keep your mental health safe. It wasn't as dark as I expected it to be, but that's going to be per person.
This was a really great start to a series. I liked the lore of Fae in the storytelling. There were frustrating parts - like being own as property, which is clearly laid out in the summary.
The start of the book is still confusing. Not the part of being an orphan, being adopted by a relative, and then coming into that inheritance...but the whole part of her exploring the woods of her newly acquired estate. The whole scene of going from her realm (would be our realm) to this new place was still never explained...like why was the butler chasing her??
The story is really intriguing, albeit the love connection. I do adore Fain (eventually), but even they admit they do not even know each other. So, I'm just going with it's one of those magical, fated mates thing - because that's honestly the only way it makes sense from the beginning.
I will say that if you are a stickler on punctuation/commas, typos, misplaced/mixed words/characters...this may annoy you - and no, it's not a difference in dialect.

I was fully invested with this spicy enemies to lovers Fae story! Ellie Sanders is an amazing job setting up this intriguing world, with its twisting plot of self-discovery, different politics, and magic. I enjoyed having dual POVs so we can get both MCs sides of the story.
Alice is absolutely relatable, suffering from low self-confidence, being in a new world, developing powers, and becoming the property of the High King. She dealt with everything with grace: became stronger, bargained for her freedom, didn’t back down, found new family, and love. Fain was such a jerk in the beginning but given his POV, you understand why and his feelings for Alice are that much better.
Ohhh that cliffhanger tho, I cannot wait for book 2!
The story and characters were fine, but the misspellings and grammatical errors were very distracting. Also, the choice of words and phrases felt juvenile and cliche. It felt like a teenage boy attempted to write a “romance” book. The “spicy” scenes were terrible. I was surprised the saying, “wam bam thank you mam” wasn’t somehow incorporated into the book, lol.
Okay, with all that aside…. I will say that the story overall was interesting enough that I will read the next book, because, well, I’m not a quitter. Quite frankly, I’m hoping the above mentioned issues magically disappear in book 2.
The story really could have been great with a REALLY good edit.
A Place of Smoke & Shadows: A Dark Fae Romance is an entrancing journey into a world of magic and mystery that I couldn't help but revisit. Ellie Sanders masterfully crafts a tale where the realms of darkness and romance intertwine seamlessly. The story follows Alice, an orphaned heiress thrust into a realm of mythical Fae where she must navigate a treacherous path to assert her identity. With a perfect blend of intricate world-building, captivating characters, and unexpected romance, this book is a must-read for fans of the genre. The fearless exploration of complex themes adds depth to the narrative, making it a deserving recipient of its five-star rating.
Loved it! This was a really cool take on fae from what I’m used to reading. I loved Alice and how she developed through the story. The story was captivating and I was so hooked wanting to know where it would go. I loved that the author took time to introduce the side characters and show the relationships they built with Alice. I loved most of the characters especially the guards and I really enjoyed fains pov as well. Cant wait to read more from the series!
Alice isn't your typical fae. She inherits a family home, and the forest is calling to her. She ends up in a strange world, everyone telling her she is fae.
Prince Fain has anger towards Alice but also a longing that will not go away. He thinks she is using magic against him.
All my thoughts and preconceived ideas of fae fantasy had been thrown out the window, and I am utterly enthralled with this book. I can't wait to jump into the rest of the series.
The inheritance was going to help her start a new life, but the one she got is nothing like she imagined. Now she has to fight for her very survival.
This is book one of the series. Enough said.
This is a fantasy story featuring the fae. The story is well written and comes with a well detailed and fascinating setting. The characters are also well developed and provide an excellent cast for our story. Including the fae in the story means there is plenty of intrigue, as well as action making for a fast paced story. Overall, it was a lot of fun. I am definitely looking forward to the next book.
Highly recommended.

This is a great enemy to lovers fantasy book. There is alot of story building that will provide for great books to come. Can't wait for the next one to come out to see what happens to Alice and Fain story. I enjoyed the struggle that each of these characters face and can't wait to see how they over come their situations.
So the tags of dark fae romance caught my eye with this book and it did not disappoint! Great characters, sweet romance with the backdrop of a dark story. Look forward to continuing the series!

This book was great! It reminded me a lot of Nesta and Cassian’s relationship in the ACOTAR series. Following not only Alices’s POV but Fain’s and realizing that he fell first in this enemies to lovers book is what did me in. I cannot wait for book 2!!!!!!
Loved it. Great plot and characters. Enjoyed the story and learning about the world and all the dynamics to it. The different twists. The humour and the tension. Can’t wait to start book two. I found it so easy to get lost in. The chapters were a good Length.
