Campus Romance #1

Romancing the R.A.

Rate this book
Noelle Buckman is looking forward to making a fresh start in college, one that doesn’t involve immature high school boys. The second she steps on campus for freshman orientation, she can sense the possibilities. Especially when she spots Andy, a resident advisor who’s not just hot but also thoughtful enough to open doors for a girl.

And Andy has his eye on Noelle. Even when her nerves take control and she thinks she comes off as a hillbilly with no direction, Andy can see what she’s really like and he’s more than a little interested.

But orientation is less than two full days and there’s an entire summer between Noelle and Andy. Will her attempt to romance the R.A. be as short-lived as college orientation?

I really liked this novella! It was cute, short and sweet. It was really funny in places too, almost like a romantic comedy. I don't read much NA because I like to keep things PG-13, but this story was not graphic at all. Noelle was a shy freshman trying to come out of her shell and learning to push boundaries at college. (And boy did she succeed at that). Her friend Julie was one of my favorite parts of the book. Julie said what she thought, and brought in a lot of the humor. Andy, the R.A. was great too. He was a straight shooter, but still managed to be light and carefree. Overall this was a light story. A chick-flick if you will. I deducted a star, because Noelle made a decision that really bothered me. More than that, she had just said she didn't want to be the girl who did that kind of thing then did it. I'd planned to deduct two stars for this, but the ending was SO CUTE it made my heart jump which made it impossible for me to give this book anything less than a 4 star rating. Although, I do wish it had been a full length. There is nothing wrong with it as written, and I'm so behind on everything I'm appreciating novellas right now, but I think I would have liked to see more of these characters and this relationship. The next book in this series is Julie's and I'm kind of looking forward to it, since she was one of my favorite characters.

Noelle's friend Julia is seriously just like me, "do you believe that? Two gorgeous girls walk by him and he keeps reading?" She scoffs. "If this is what guys are like at Timberland, I'm transferring." Hey now maybe it was a good book, with naughty bits in it, don't judge the boy. Andy I like him, "I don't get preferential treatment if that's what you're thinking. The R.A. position is more like my dad giving me a swift kick in the ass. He says I need direction and to learn responsibility." He holds his hands out to the sides. "So, here I am." He's honest, "because you were having a miserable time at that sorry excuse for a social downstairs." The boy is a total keeper, "could you tell that to Coach? I'm going to have to swim extra laps for running out of practice like that. But when I saw I missed your text, I just took off. I had to see you."

Noelle is ready to leave high school behind and everything that goes with it, except for her best friend Julia that is. As their first year of college looms Noelle and Julia attend freshman orientation where Noelle more than catches the eye of a hot guy. Not sure if this guy is a teacher, a player, or really interested; Noelle decides to throw caution to the wind and take a chance. After all this could be the last time she sees him.

Noelle takes the chance and dives feet first into what will turn out to be a fun and heartfelt, whirlwind romance. In Romancing the R.A. we are literally taken on a fast journey through college love. We are given just enough details about each of the characters to make us want more of them. With the same being said of the story. It is short, but gives you just enough to appease the thirst for a quick read, while feeding your hunger for more.

Ashelyn Drake does a great job of giving the reader a story they can get lost in, one that allows you to forget about the world and all that surrounds you, even if it is for a short time. Sure I wish this story were longer, but that doesn't mean that I didn't absolute love the story and wouldn't recommend it. In fact, I highly recommend this read. It was great fun. I laughed, I swooned, and I awed a hundred times in this book.

Romancing the R.A. is a fast paced novella that will catch you in its love net and have you falling for the swoon worthy R.A., Andy in seconds flat. Need that quick read to quench your thirst? Then this is the book for you. Quick and swoonalicious!

Romancing the R.A. is the first novella in the Campus Crush series. And focuses on Noelle's first day on Campus, away from home, which meant making her own decisions, knowing how to handle herself and other people which is part of growing up and moving away from home.

This is a short, cure romantic story, and I look forward to the second book/novella. Would love to know where the story goes from there. :)

Super cute, but I didn't realize it was a novella until I started reading it. I thought Noelle's feelings were a little "over the top" for just meeting Andy. A bit of insta-love. But still a super cute and quick read.

The synopsis of this book had me really excited to read it and when I started it, I’d settled in for the night with my hot drink and couple of biscuits. To my complete and utter surprise, I’d finished the book before I finished my drink. I had no idea that this was more of a novella length of book and I couldn’t believe it when it ended, as for me the story had JUST gotten started. I feel like the author was just ‘testing the waters’ with this book but I wish she had taken the risk and written a full length novel for me to devour. I enjoyed the premise and the characters but it ended up sounding more like a summer romance than anything else and I thought the best part would be when Noelle returned to college for real, only the book ended before we got to that part.

I loved the chemistry between Andy and Noelle although in my opinion, I did feel like the sex scene was rushed through. I also didn’t like when Noelle was invited to a social and says something along the lines of she’s not interested if Andy isn’t going to be there. Um, you’re starting college and you don’t know anyone apart from your friend who has accompanied you, why on earth wouldn’t you be interested in meeting new people as this is a major part of going to college, besides you know, getting an education!

So, all in all, Romancing the R.A. had a couple of flaws, the biggest one being that it was too damn short. It may sound like a negative but it’s actually one of the best compliments the author could get. Please write more!!!!

I loved this book! I loved how the transformation of the characters rose then fell. Ms. Hammond did an excellent job in capturing the essence of what happen when it goes to far in your head!

What I like most about this book is the process of the characters from humble to prideful, then the downfall. I really like how the main character Angela, learns her lesson. But she also learns it the hard way. I adore that that Angela and her transformation to prideful person is fast. I like how she takes things far and is not who she was in the beginning. The fall of Angela was a surprise and not what I expected. I thought that maybe she become yesterdays news, but instead it was something worse.

The love interest of this book is sweet and enduring. I like that he was their before and after her fall. I like that he was really with her no matter how big her head got. Now that, is true love. I love that Angela, learn that it is whats on the inside that counts.

Pride is a great book about rising then falling. Never should you think that just because you have something now, does not mean you will have it tomorrow. Be humble and grateful for what you have. Be nice and courteous to everyone no matter who you are. You never know what might happen to you. Ms. Hammond's Pride is a delightful read full of promise and enjoyment!

This was such a fun read. It took me right back to college and the first guy I dated on campus. Every time Noelle saw Andy I actually felt her butterflies and excitement. I love when a book reminds me of that time in my life. I only wish my campus visits had been this much fun.

Noelle is the girl next door. She’s a bit apprehensive and let’s her more out going BFF Julia take the lead. I loved the friendship between the two girls. It was so real it reminded me of my own BFF!

Andy is that gorgeous guy every girl crushed on the first week of college. But on top of that he is one of the good guys. My heart pounded every time he made eye contact with Noelle. If only every guy on a college campus was as wonderful as Andy…..a girl can dream, right?

Favorite line of the book “My knight in shining Speedo.” Best laugh out loud moment too.

I loved Ashelyn Drake’s writing. She really captured the college experience from the rush of new found independence to the excitement of first love out on your own. This is a fun, quick summer read that I highly recommend. I look forward to the next book in the Campus Crush series.

What if you were chosen to go from being a nobody to a somebody practically overnight, but in the process, you lost yourself? Beauty is only skin deep.

When I first started reading Pride, I thought Angela was someone I would like to be friends with. Then Angela became a supermodel and her entire persona changed. I hated Angela at that point. I hated her so much I honestly almost stopped reading the book.

Lauren Hammond effectively helps raise awareness about bullying. Pride sends a message. Bullying sucks. Plain and simple, right? If only it were. This is a book I would like to see middle school age students study in class. Students should be allowed to pick it apart. Groups could be formed, bullying and non-bullying, and giant leaps toward students respecting one another could be reached.

You may wonder if your son could get anything from reading this book. I recommend Pride regardless of gender. It begins with love, continues with fierce hatred, and ends on top.

This was another one of our Girls with Books weekend read-alongs with Jessica from Lovin' Los Libros, Danielle from What Danielle Did Next, Wendy from Book Scents, Tonya from lilybloombooks Trish from Between the Lines, Chelsea from Starbucks & Books Obsession and CeCe from CeCe's Steaming Mug of Books. I'd been looking forward to this one for a while. Unfortunately I didn't look close enough before getting into this book and after about 10-15 min of reading I look down and notice I was already at 10% which was confusing me because that's pretty darn quick. So I thought maybe I was reading longer than I thought and looked it up only to find out... it's 81 pages long. Sigh.

81 pages just isn't enough time to build a believable romance between 2 strangers. It was cute at the start and had me smiling and all that. But after a couple hours and she's wondering if he hits on all freshmen like this or if she's "special" and then I see things like "I'm not that type of guy" and "I believe you" it's like really.....? Really? You've been acquainted all of 3 or 4 hours and you can take his word so easily? Not to mention spend the night with him? Wasn't impressed with that.

As a full length novel this book has so much more potential and I probably would be raving about it right now because like I said it started off cute and had me all excited. The characters were easy to like and had the romance been strung out for more than a 24 hour period the storyline would have been great too.

The only other thing I had a problem with was the bathroom cat fight. It just felt awkward and out of place. Thrown in just for tension sake. Things were short enough without having a potential roadblock that..turned out to be nothing. Another "it's not like that" and "I believe you" type of thing.

Overall I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. It just was.

I first saw this book on Sheri's blog (Tangled Up in Books) for a Waiting on Wednesday post. As you can tell from my recent reviews- I am all about the NA Contemps lately. So this one appealed to me right away! I was so bummed because for the longest time it was only released for Kindle and I have a Nook. I ended up winning an e-copy when Ashelyn did a Twitter giveaway and she sent me a couple of signed postcards to hold me over until it would be released for B&N. I finally got it a couple of weeks ago and we all decided to read it for our Girls With Books read-a-thon this week.

I had no idea how short this book was. It really read as more of a novella for me and I have to say: I wanted so much more! Because of the length, I felt like we missed out on a lot of necessary character development: I didn't really have time to connect with Noelle and Andy. Everything happened so fast, it was hard for me to really believe their scenario. Sure, I believe two people can be instantly attracted to one another, and I loved that Andy was a good guy, but I guess I would have been a bit slower to trust than Noelle was. I know this is the first book in the Campus Crush series, so I'm not sure if the next book will be a continuation of Andy and Noelle's story or if it might focus on Noelle's best friend, Julie.

Julie was hilarious. She was that fun, confident best friend who conveniently disappeared when Andy was around. Gotta love a matchmaking best friend! Though, my best friend would have freaked out on me if the same scenario that happened with Noelle and Andy happened with me and a guy I met that day. I would have incurred her wrath for days.

Andy was a sweet character. I really liked him. He wasn't a jerk, he was a good guy who seemed very genuine. I was quite surprised by where Andy and Noelle's relationship went and couldn't help be feel it was a bit rushed.

Again, my biggest thing was the length. I felt like we could have explored so many avenues and had some scenes extended to add in some more flair. If you're looking for a short, sweet read- this would be a good one to check out provided you're not looking for a lot of depth.

Romancing the R.A. was a light, fluffy and cute read. However, it was extremely short and not what I was expecting. I was a tad disappointed because of this. It was more like a novella and I prefer more depth to the novels that I read.

Noelle and her best friend, Julia are visiting the Timberland College campus for freshmen orientation at the beginning of the summer. They will be attending in the fall and they are there to get an introduction to the campus and the dorms and meet other incoming freshmen. Noelle meets Andy, a sophomore R.A. who she immediately is attracted to and finds a connection with. They spend some time flirting and getting to know each other a little. She ends up spending the night with him.

"As he turns and walks back to his seat, he meets my gaze, just for a second. And a second is all it takes to do me in. I'm so hot for the R.A."

I want to say that I liked Noelle and Andy but the book was so short that their wasn't much character development and I didn't feel like I really got to know the characters. Andy seemed like a really nice guy and Noelle seemed like she would be a likable character. I found her to be a little clingy considering she only knew him for a few hours but she couldn't stand to be away from him whenever they weren't together.

She also slept with him after only knowing him for a few hours but she talked a lot about being guarded and not easily trusting guys. That seemed a little contradictory to me. Even though she felt like he was a nice guy and she could trust him, it seems unbelievable that she would give it up that quickly.

"Am I just a notch in his R.A. belt?"

I do understand that people can meet and have an instant connection but it was a little difficult to grab a hold of in this book. If it was a little longer and had some added depth to the story line and romance, I think I could have really gotten into it and liked it a lot more. Overall, it was a quick, easy, enjoyable read but I would have enjoyed it so much more if it was longer with more character and plot development.

Although this isn't the first book that our little group has read together, it was the first one I personally took part in. (And last to review, I think) I honestly hadn't heard about this and was curious enough to purchase right away and dive right in. BUT. Sitting at roughly only 80 pages, I was a little disappointed with it.

In short, Noelle and her friend Julia, are at freshmen orientation for College when Noelle meets Andy, an R.A, who has an immediate attraction to Noelle. Sparks fly. And.. that's it, really.

OK. So there is a little bit more to the story but not really. Honestly, this would have been a perfect story, had this been a prelude to a full novel showing how these two met or if it had been 200 pages longer.

It was cute and fun at first, watching these two interact with each other but it just got.. rushed and weird after about 20 pages. It wasn't long enough to really establish a liking to each character and especially their relationship. And sorry, their little hook up made Noelle a hypocrite.

Overall- CUTE. But too damn short. If you want a quick, mindless read- Romancing the R.A. is for YOU!

Romancing the R.A. is short and sweet, 85 pages according to Amazon. I read it in about an hour, while conversing with relatives from time to time. It's written in first person from Noelle's point of view. She and her friend Julia go to orientation for their freshman year of college at the beginning of the summer. Noelle is anxious to leave the duplicitous high school boys behind, hoping to find a mature college boy. Though, I don't think she planned to find Mr. Perfect at orientation.

Andy is an R.A. and a member of the swim team (nothing like a hot guy in a speedo). He's sweet and cute, basically everything Noelle is looking for and she feels immediately drawn to him.

The characters are not very developed, but really, what can you expect in such a short book. The plot is completely centered around the budding attraction between Noelle and Andy. Best friend Julia is an interesting character from the few glimpses we get of her. I wouldn't mind reading a book about her finding a guy that sweeps her off her feet.

Overall, this book was an enjoyable, often funny read. I recommend this to mature high school and up due to sexual situations, innuendo, and one sexual encounter.

This is the second book of Lauren's that I have read. She can really impact your thoughts and bring you into a story really well. This story about a white collar family sort of rags to riches tale is an incredible journey.

Angela didn't think she had much going for her. She couldn't shop like all of her other classmates. She didn't come from much and they didn't let her forget it.

When she was offered a modeling contract, she jumped on it and that is when her entire world changed. She let the fame and money go to her head and started treating everyone how she used to be treated. She became a vapid little monster that no one wanted to deal with.

That was until she butted heads with the wrong person and an unfortunate incident ended her modeling career. Everyone that she pushed away when she was famous took their own time in re-enacting with the wounded starlet.

Angela finally understood that she was wrong in her actions and there was only one person that she could rely on no matter what and that person was there in the end. This is a fabulous story about learning to behave and be responsible for your actions.

Highly recommended for YA lovers.

I really enjoyed Romancing the R.A.! Compared to Behind Closed Doors, this was more my kind of contemporary romance. Honestly, I so wish my college orientation experience was similar to this novel, especially with all the hottie R.A. boys hanging around.

The best was that I could really relate to Noelle throughout the novel. The kind of luck she had, the little mishaps, were things I could see happening to me. I also love how her confidence grew through the novel, despite the few embarrassing moments that occurred. And the chemistry between her and Andy was so natural—which I really didn’t feel with Julia and Darren in Behind Closed Doors. Also, though the plot of Romancing the R.A. might have only been two days, the romance’s pace was easy and perfect.

This is a great NA romantic novella! I would definitely recommend for a quiet afternoon read.

The humor mingled throughout this story was a pleasant surprise. I was smiling and laughing at nearly every sentence. Julia, Noelle's best friend, is particularly hilarious. Everything she said and did was a riot.

Ashelyn's writing almost appears effortless, although I know writing a story is far from it. She captures the flirtations of young people, the embarrassment of first meetings, and the rush of new attraction perfectly.

The voice of Noelle is so well done that I felt as though she was a real, fresh-out-of-high school young woman. I was blushing just as much as she did throughout the story. And yes, I gushed over the fabulous yogurt/chest scene. Andy is possibly the best college boyfriend in the world. I feel like enrolling to college just so I can romance an R.A. *wink*

I usually prefer much of my review to stem from aspects combined required to make a great story. These aspects are things such as well laid storylines, and well defined characters, flow of the story, and how to story makes me feel. Pride as exceled in the majority of those things, but I just could not turn myself to liking this story. I think that another story written, but with different content I would find a five star read. This difenitely worth a try if you enjoy more of a girly, girl read.

Noelle is in that in-between stage of adulthood. She attends the freshman orientation of her college when she spots Andy, an irresistible, slightly older R.A. (resident advisor). This is when her insecurities kick in. Is he really noticing her? Does she know how to flirt? Can she compete with other girls who want him? Maybe she’s too young and inexperienced for him. I’m not giving away the ending, but I loved how things unfolded.

A short story about a college freshman attending her orientation and falling for the RA. That sums it all up.

Didn't feel it. I thought it was very cheesy. I don't know whether to gush for its cuteness or to grimace for its uh, for a lack of better wording, whorish ways. First day you meet a guy and you feel strongly for him, enough to sleep with him and have a serious relationship. Not my cup of coffee.

This was a very cute, short, easy read. I liked Noelle and Andy and it was nice to have a romance develop without all the drama. I would be interested in revisiting them at some point or maybe getting a book from Julia's POV.
