Untraced Magic

Rate this book
A girl whose soul longed for love. A broken mage with a haunted heart. A spell that could bring them together, or tear their love apart.

When Morgan arrives in Cutters Cove, she’s looking for a fresh start and expects nothing more than a quiet, uneventful existence. She quickly realizes there is more to the sleepy town, and its dim shades of gray swallow her into its murky spell. She’s not looking to make friends, but when she meets her mysterious, and dangerously handsome neighbor Tyler, she finds herself drawn to him in ways she can’t explain. With eyes that always find hers, he has her questioning the one rule she has. Don’t get close to anyone. Because Morgan has a secret and will protect it with her life. But Tyler has secrets of his own and fate has other ideas. When Morgan’s truth is exposed, she must decide to trust Tyler, or risk losing the man she is linked to by something more powerful than she could ever imagine. Where the paranormal blur the edge of reality, the fight to control a power sought by darkness may be the only thing that can save Cutters Cove.

Tyler's Blurb (Unofficial)

It seems I have a new neighbor. A human. And she’s becoming a... distraction.
My eyes seek hers in every room, her wit gets under my skin, and she has me fired on every edge of caution known to man. I can’t get close, no matter how much I find myself drawn to her. I’ve made that mistake before...fallen in love with a human. I won’t do it again.

Untraced Magic is book 1 in the Cutters Cove Chronicles. Each book follows a different couple and their story, but their tales interconnect and are best read in order. This book is a steamy paranormal romance full of magic and mystery, with a happily ever after.

So grateful to have received an ARC of this book because I just loved this book it was so much fun to read. It gives Twilight, Charmed and Vampire Diaries vibes with fated mated which I love. Tyler was just the absolute cutest grumpy guy to turned marshmallow and Morgan is a sweet confused little badass and what I loved about her was that she didn’t all of a sudden become this crazy magic wielding witch it’s a slow progress which for me gave it a more human and realistic feel.
The only thing I didn’t absolutely love was how quick the action was near the end of the book I just would’ve loved for it to be dragged out a bit I felt like it was over way to quickly but that’s just cause I didn’t want it to end!
I can’t wait to read the rest of this series and hopefully see more of Colt, Skye and what happened with Wes!

Trigger Warning: ⚠️

What a lovely book! I started it this book briefly at first as I was busy being a workaholic. But once I got into a routine I picked it up again a week later and smashed it out in a day and a bit.

I felt like I was entranced, ✨Untraced Magic ✨ really caught me off guard.

It ticked all my boxes
* Small Town
*Paranormal
*Grumpy MMC
*BADASS FMC
*Forbidden Love
*Gothic Vibes
*Mysterious
*Fated Mates
*Touch Her = DEATH

Tyler with his grumpy persona, Morgan with her badass energy. Along with the small town paranormal vibes this book came to the party.
If you like Twilight or Vampire Dairies you have to give this book a read!

I seriously could not stop reading this book. Like it was just such a good paranormal heartfelt story. I cannot wait to read more books from this universe that @rachelscotteauthor built up so incredibly well. I need more Ty & Morgan… I also really really liked all the side characters in this book.

This book was soooo much fun!! It was my first time reading the Witch, Werewolf, Vamp fantasy realm and I loved it!
Hooked from the start, it was fast paced and a breeze to read. A few plot twists I didn’t see coming. Annotated so many beautiful quotes. 😗🤌🏼
Such a great level of spice and I can’t wait to know what happens next.
Loved this and would not have noticed this was a first time author! 🩷
Definitely a book to get you out of a book slump or even if you want a bit of spicy supernatural in your life. 🤭

Finishing this one was almost as painful as my wisdom teeth removal

(slight plot spoilers)

It sounded like a wattpad fantasy, with some typical turns of phrases overused like "darkness pooled in his eyes" (he wasn't even that angry) and others of the sort. But more than the writing style, which felt forced and copied from other fantasy/romance books in my opinion, it's the mix of tropes and clichés thrown in there : hidden powers (but of course the most powerful ones), orphan but with powerful parents, fated mates, and last but not least... WINGS. I was also not convinced by the worldbuilding, as it was a very small world tbh only a small town with the MCs' respective houses and a bar, then two secondary locations. It was like a low budget movie which can't afford to film in many locations except it's a book and we're reading about the same two silly people in the same two silly places.

The dialogues... lord have mercy these were the most inconsequential dialogues I've ever read. I sometimes skipped whole pages and chapters and I still missed nothing, they yapped a lot of nothing. Maybe that has to do with how quickly the whole friendship and romance formed, bc in a matter of 2 or 3 days tops, the two MCs were deeply in love and attached to one another (despite him "fighting his feelings" at the beginning and her too, fast forward a few days later and boom inseperable), and we're supposed to get "found family" vibes after less than a week.

In fact the whole book might take place in the course of a week or two, nothing much happened besides parties and talks of her past before finally reaching the most anticlimactic boss fight with a villain whose threat or presence was never felt before the moment they're introduced. The "fight" or the conflict if you will, is settled in an hour, and I'm being generous.

Now it wouldn't be an honest review if I didn't mention the cringe. I almost DNFed at 20% because of how awkward some scenes were, like the PUBLIC LAP DANCE in a room containing his sister and best friends (it's only the second time she meets the friends... and him actually).

"Someone's taken my mate." "My mate's missing." "Find my mate." "You hurt my mate"
OH if only she had a name of her own we could use sometimes... one could forget it as from the moment we're made aware of the fact they're mates, that's the only term he uses to refer to her. I'm not a fan of the names Tyler and Morgan in a fantasy setting but if we're running with that might as well use them.

Finally, the cringy thoughts, often times way more intense than the situation warrants. Allow me to demonstrate :
- "She was either rude or playing hard to get" (it's their first time meeting, they're at a party, he's not being very friendly, she just steps aside to let him pass?? is he mad?)
- "She was the beauty. We were the beasts." (they're all really nice and only have magic powers like fire, earth and mind stuff, we've seen more beastly)
- "[her] fluttering her doe eyes. MY doe eyes." (ew)
- "'What's a mate?' My eyes flew toward Morgan's voice, innocence buried beneath her lashes" (she's 24yo and doesn't know about the concept of mates, whatever, but innocence is not a very endearing term in my eyes, it feels condescending and infantalizing)

PS: NO HATE TO THE AUTHOR my review is pretty harsh but if she happens to read this I hope it can serve as constructive criticism and not pure pointless spite.

Wow - where to start?

Perhaps the wonderfully evocative setting, which reminded me so thoroughly of the original Charmed tv programs, along with Twilight.

Or the characters...
Morgan, with her sardonic views & how I resonated with her so much:
"Morning air was the one thing I could count on to help clear my mind, but sea air was intoxicating.
Borderline addictive, even"

And the moment! Oh, that moment. Mm hmm.

Tyler, you were hot. The longing, the want & then... the praise.....

The magic was woven into the novel like an old friend who knows when they need to be there with you, and the community was authentic & homely, loved most of the friendships.

Cannot wait for you all to read, and am even more excited to read the second book!!!

I am incredibly privileged to have been given this ARC to read by the talented author - Thank you.

Such a good witch romance novel! The author did an excellent job of being witty with the romantic relationship between Morgan and Tyler, the two main characters. That is what really sold me on the novel was the bantering back and forth between them. It’s refreshing in a novel, since it seems a lot of fantasy novels are taking darker turns and not including as much banter.

The big twists towards the end of the novel are well written and I did not see them coming! There are some spicy scenes in the novel and they are explicit.

There is a HEA for Morgan and Tyler at the end of this book, but I’m hoping the author has plans to write about the other characters and their fated mates!!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was pretty good. I got really invested about 25% in. I enjoyed the romance with a supernatural twist. However, the ending felt really rushed. Everything happened in the last few pages with events that came out of nowhere and not a lot of description of emotion that had been going on earlier in the book. It was good though and I would read the next one to find out more explanation.

"Tell me this is real. That it's not some nightmare I'm going to regret tomorrow. Convince me this is worth the risk."

Oh, this book, I was grabbed from the first page, and now I'm going to have a book hangover. The chemistry between Morgan and Tyler was delish and just so right, and the banter between them had me laughing.

You have witches, mages, werewolves, vampires, and elemental magic. Found family, friendship, betrayal, secrets, action, and so much more. I can't wait to follow Skye in her book and find out what happens with Wes in a Unhinged Magic.

I really enjoyed this book! The writing was easy to get into, making it a great introduction to Rachel Scotte’s paranormal universe. The characters were compelling and easy to connect with, and the romantic tension added just the right amount of spice. What really hooked me was the twist—I didn’t see it coming, and it left me wanting more. I’m definitely intrigued to see what happens in the next book because I need answers!

DNF - Not For Me

This a young adult paranormal romance trope. Although the concept was intriguing, the characters were rather immature and the plot was taking too long to evolve. I DNF’d at 44%. Just not for me.

*Untraced Magic* is a bewitching start to the Cutters Cove Witches series, blending romance and fantasy in a way that feels both fresh and timeless. The narrative draws readers into the mystical town of Cutters Cove, where every corner seems to hide a secret and magic pulses in the very air.

The protagonist is a relatable character whose yearning for love and belonging resonates deeply. Her journey from an ordinary girl to a key player in a magical saga is both compelling and inspiring. Her growth is mirrored by [Mage's Name], a broken mage burdened by his past. His haunted heart and the mystery surrounding his abilities add depth to the story, making him a character readers will root for.

The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, and their interactions are charged with both passion and tension. The spell that binds their fates serves as a powerful metaphor for the struggles and triumphs of love. It’s this spell that drives much of the plot, creating a sense of urgency and unpredictability that keeps the pages turning.

Author excels in world-building, crafting a vibrant setting that feels alive and brimming with potential. Cutters Cove is described in vivid detail, from its quaint shops to its hidden magical enclaves, making it a place readers will want to visit time and again. The supporting cast of characters, including other witches and magical beings, enriches the story and sets the stage for future installments.

However, the novel isn't without its flaws. At times, the pacing can feel uneven, with certain scenes dragging while others rush by too quickly. Some plot points could have benefited from deeper exploration, particularly the backstories of secondary characters who are hinted at but not fully developed.

Despite these minor issues, *Untraced Magic* is a promising beginning to a series that has the potential to become a favorite among fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. It's a tale of love, magic, and self-discovery that will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Final Thoughts:

*Untraced Magic* casts a spell that is hard to break. With its endearing characters, enchanting setting, and a plot that balances romance and magic, it's a book that will appeal to anyone who loves a good love story with a mystical twist. Whether you're new to the genre or a seasoned fan, this book is worth adding to your reading list.

Pros:

- Strong character development

- Vivid world-building

- Engaging romance

Cons:

- Uneven pacing

- Some underdeveloped plot points

Recommended For:

Fans of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and anyone who enjoys stories about love and magic overcoming obstacles.

-Thanks to the author for this ARC. This book is one of those that as soon as you start reading you can't stop because you want to know more. Well, this is what happened to me. This is the first book by this author and it is totally beautiful. The way of writing makes you feel part of the story, as if you were another character.

-At the same time, the characters are amazing and each one gives their personal touch. Also the powers of each character are unique and even made me want to have Colt's power, and the romance between Morgan and Tyler? It's out of this world how much they love each other. I liked Morgan and Skye's friendship, I hope to see more of them in the next books.

-Untraced Magic is published on June 15, and I recommend it to you. So if you are looking for a new romance with magic, found family, and so much more, you found the ideal book.

4.5 stars, so I'm rounding up!

This is the debut novel by Kiwi author Rachel Scotte and Book 1 of the Cutters Cove Witches series.

Untraced Magic follows Morgan, a 24 year old woman, moving to a quiet, seaside town for a fresh start after losing her parents. She moves in next door to a couple of good-looking men. They invite her over to meet some of their friends. They're lovely, nice people, all around her age, but there's just something about her new neighbor, Tyler...
Turns out, Cutters Cove is full of supernatural beings, and Ty, Wes, Skye, Reid, Colt, Scarlett, and Jade are all a part of that world. They're Witches. Mages. People with magic.
Ty's last relationship ended badly, with his human girlfriend being killed by a vampire. No way is he keen on exposing another human woman to his world. He tries to keep Morgan at arms length. But there's just something about his new neighbor...

This is a Paranormal Romance with dual POV, fated mates, some nice spice, magic, found family, hidden powers, some surprises, and a Happily Ever After. It's a lighter read and the story moves along at a good pace. It still leaves you asking some questions, though, so I am keen to read the next book to find out more!

So stoked I got an arc for this NZ authors debut novel!!

It's dark, mysterious, gothic, magical, aaand paranormal fated mates?? Say less.
It's got a twilightesque vibe, but with a little bit of spice, which I'm so not mad about.

This was fast paced and the descriptive writing really helped set the scene 👌🏻
We even got hit with a "Where's my mate" moment. Gotta love that! 🖤

I'm looking forward to seeing how this story continues!!

Untraced Magic by Rachel Scott was a huge miss for me. The first chapter really drew me in; the prose did an excellent job of setting the moody, witchy atmosphere. I loved the mystery and the general “dark magic” vibe in Scott's style. Her writing is actually what kept me from DNFing to a certain point. I wish that descriptive flair continued through the whole book; it gets lost about halfway through. Unfortunately, my enjoyment all goes downhill from there.

For starters, this book is a level of “spice” I didn't realize I was signing up for. From the moment we meet Tyler, our male love interest, his POV is mostly innuendos and lusting after Morgan. The level of horniness these two characters have for each other completely obliterates any room for genuine chemistry. By the time romantic confessions come around it feels unearned. I wish we explored their relationship outside of sex. My favorite part of romance as a genre is the yearning or the intimacy in non-sexual moments; I can honestly only think of one scene that fits this, and even that didn't work for me. If that level of sexual content is your thing, this may be far more enjoyable for you than it was for me.

Secondly, I have to address the plot. The story seems to majorly take a page out of The Vampire Diaries—and I say this as someone who loved TVD even with its at times embarrassingly bad writing. There's cliché TV tropes galore here, from spin to bottle, to “girl who doesn't like dresses gets a makeover for a party”, and more. Even Morgan's backstory (no spoilers here, sorry) takes elements from that show's protagonist. The first half of this book is essentially a montage of partying. The second half attempts to cram a ton of exposition while also introducing last-minute action. It all comes across majorly rushed. I really think the author had too big a scope planned for one book.

As a quick note, I did like the general characterization of Morgan. Her chapters were a far more enjoyable read than Tyler's. Outside of Morgan, however, most of the cast completely falls flat. I think there's just too large a cast to introduce in this page count to give anyone depth.

Lastly, I do also have to address the number of errors in this book (or at least within my eARC copy) including spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Towards the second half in particular it felt like I was catching mistakes at least once a chapter. For me this really signals that the whole story could've used another round of editing.

Overall, I think Scotte shows potential as a debut author, I just don't think this series is for me.

3 🌟

🌟 4/5

“Death speared our hearts. Ripped them open. Left shadows of ourselves to put back together its shattered pieces.”

As a debut novel this one really shocked me (in a good way). It didn’t feel like a debut, more like the third or fourth book by an author, but definitely the start of the series. I fell in love with Tyler and his friends, and little old lady Betty from the moment we were introduced to them and loved going on the journey in Cutters Cove.

The characters were lovable and boy oh BOY do I have questions I need answers to in book two - but once this story starts ramping it holds onto you until the very end. The pacing definitely caught me off guard at times and I’m hoping some of the events near the end of book one might have some more clarity shed in book two because A WHOLE LOT HAPPENED and I want to read more about it!

One thing I loved about this book was that it made me realise what I like in an urban fantasy - I’m the first one to say I don’t normally gravitate towards it and I think this book hit the nail on the head of everything I do like about them. Getting to find out about magic, creatures and other paranormal entities from the perspective of someone unaware (please tell me there’s a name for this as a trope because I can’t exactly Google that for recommendations can I?) is something that I love in an urban fantasy and this book did it extremely well. If only I could remain as cool and collected as Morgan when finding out the world isn’t exactly as it seems and maybe there actually isn’t something wildly wrong with you?!

I’m excited for the next instalment in the series as there’s so much more I want to know about the world, the magic, and the characters in Cutters Cove!

A plot twisting paranormal adventure. I don't know what to say about this except for I am in love with the Cutters Cove gang. It seems like a quiet little town but it's hiding so many secrets. Morgan is an interesting and fiery character and her story broke my heart, I was rooting for her to have her HEA. Tyler is a serious and tortured soul with a tragic past, their budding relationship and bonding over trauma and healing is so endearing and wholesome. They are so cute together and their banter was brilliant, I was rooting for them to give in to this growing thing between them and give love a chance. The spice in this book is brilliant and the timing of it in the plot will have you glued to the pages to see if they give in to their mutual attraction. The other characters were so interesting and I do hope we get to read their stories one day, one story in particular I hope is coming first, if you know you know. The plot twists had me on the edge of my seat and gasping in shock, I was glued to the pages. There are still some questions left about the people at Cutters cove and I can't wait for the next book to learn more about this little town and it's inhabitants. A new to me author and I'm happily waiting for more from this author that I can get sucked into the world of.

So, no rating for this one. This is the author’s first work, and I think it has potential, but it needs to be fleshed out more. The characters are all mid-20s, but read very high school (other than the sex scenes, which are well done). Honestly, if I ignored the sex scenes, it would feel like I was reading a YA book, which I don’t think was the author’s intention.

Character development needed more work, as did the overall plot. For example - tell me/show me more about the mom. The one interaction was so brief, that it was hard to find it believable. Also, the entire time I thought it was leading up to Betty being an undercover bad guy…like, she just doesn’t seem real 🤷‍♀️ Give me more info and depth on everyone in the friend group. I guess just give me more overall.

I will say that I read the entire thing, and it didn’t bore me, which is a plus these days.

✨𝖀𝖓𝖙𝖗𝖆𝖈𝖊𝖉 𝕸𝖆𝖌𝖎𝖈- 𝕽𝖆𝖈𝖍𝖊𝖑 𝕾𝖈𝖔𝖙𝖙𝖊✨

This is a great book especially for beginners (like myself) into the paranormal realm of witches, covens, magic, fated mates. I didn't understand some of the terms prior but this book explains everything so throughly and I wasn't confused at all throughout. I was left obsessed and wanting more.
I'm so excited for book 2 because I have so many questions that need answered!!!! 😍

It was a very fast and easy book to read! The characters are top tier (Tyler ) and the twist of the ending, I was left shook. I honestly think this is a must read by anyone who loves a small town romance with paranormal, mystery & suspense. ✨

Also the cover.. stunning!! 😍🥰

"A storm formed within me, one light, one dark. Like two worlds colliding, fighting for one universe."

I was pleasantly surprised by this debut from Rachel, who by the way is a total sweetheart. If you know me you know I am terrible for either judging a book by it's cover or buying a book and not knowing a thing about it. I literally bought this because I didn't wanna miss out and have FOMO at ages of pages earlier this year.

When I took a moment to look at the cover properly and saw the word witches I knew i was done for, at the end of the prologue i was hooked and this story did not release me once from its chokehold. Add to the fact Rachel showed me her inspo for the men and 🫠🥵 I need a mop up in aisle 3.

This felt like The Secret Circle set in Twilight's Forks, Washington and I was not mad about it AT ALL.

This is absolutely something you should pick up if any of the following tickles your fancy.

Morgan arrives in a small fishing village and the first thing she does is order a latte from the coffee cart. I like her instantly.

We soon meet a group of locals including many many hot men working on cars and I am sold on this book.

It turns out this is town of witches and mages (and other supernatural beings), and humans like Morgan are entirely unaware of their existence.

I haven't read a lot of witches and mages books so it did take me a while to get into this book.

There's plenty of spice, and when I found out what Tyler, a fire mage, can do with his fingers....😊

But there's also a good story with some twists and turns, a satisfying ending but still a lot of unresolved threads to have me waiting impatiently for the next book.

supernatural. suspense. spice.

Just delicious!

Morgan finds herself in a new sleepy small town, trying to run from her grief. She’s quickly met with man who she can’t seem to keep her eyes off of. Tyler is a mage who tries to fight the connection he feels towards Morgan, that he can’t explain.

The found family Morgan finds with Tyler and his crew is heartwarming as they help her navigate her new found life. The plot twists and betrayal had me gasping.

Only downside I would say is some parts felt very fast paced and had me thinking “hm. That seemed too easy”. But with that being said, I am also very excited to see what happens in the next books of the series!

Morgan lived her whole life not knowing who she was or where she came from. When the parents that had adopted her died, she decided to move to a new town and attempt a new life.

Tyler is a small town guy running his own business restoring old cars. From the moment his eyes locked with Morgan, he new his life was about to change.

Will Morgan's secrets come back to haunt her? Will she and Tyler be able to survive what coming at them? Only time will tell.

Don’t let the darkness of the cover fool you, this is a cozy witchy romance, first and foremost. The small-town vibes are great, with found family, found magic, and a resists-at-first love story.

Danger does rear its ugly head early in the book, but initially as a fairly easily overcome catalyst for the revelations about Morgan’s past, the people she is meeting, and the journey she is on.

When the past eventually catches up to Morgan, it's right at the end and she’s already got her new family firmly by her side.

Absolutely fabulous, a page turner that you just want to keep reading that weaves a story that changes and builds as the book progresses… leaves you with a why a the end so you are looking forward to the next book. Characters are well written and descriptions help to place the reader in the story in an immersive way. The world building and storytelling are exceptional and this was a very enjoyable read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

If you loved Charmed, The Vampire Diaries and Twilight you will love the vibes of this book. The overcast, spooky seaside town, the cast of magical and beautiful twenty-somethings, a young woman trying to figure out her place in the world, the push and pull of a couple desperate to be together but reluctant to take that step because of dark secrets - all super enjoyable aspects for someone who gobbles up everything Paranormal Romance.

Loved this, didn’t want to put it down. I love the varying magic in the book and how they interact. Felt very real and I could feel the emotions at times as if mine. I was very invested in the outcome also. Can’t say more or will have spoilers. Although I Havel say hope there are lots in a series to come covering the different characters individually in each book.
