In a world steeped in shadows and mystery, Asher Norwood, a sin eater tasked with combating dark magic, finds himself entangled in a perilous quest. When a mysterious client presents him with a contract, Asher, accompanied by his cunning raven partner Aethon, and the former pirate Rane Moxley, sets sail to confront a malevolent ghost ship that plagues the seas, bringing doom to all in its wake.
Their path is fraught with danger as they navigate the fragile peace between humans and the saltmer—an enigmatic race of creatures who possess their own frightful power over the sea. To complete their contract, they unite with unlikely allies, each harboring their own motives for joining the mission. As they traverse the murky barrier between the realms of the living and the dead, the boundaries between friend and foe begin to blur.
Songs of Bone is book two of the Sin Eater Tales series, following A Season of Ravens. Each book is a standalone story and can be read without reading the previous one.
J. R. Snyder is a fantasy author living in the Puget Sound area of Washington with his family, two cats, and a handful of chickens. When he’s not writing, he enjoys gardening, beekeeping, hiking, and exploring the rocky beaches near his home.
The Sin Eater Tales series is currently comprised of three novels with more on the way.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. Songs of Bone has been the long anticipated sequel to A Season of Ravens and it does not disappoint. The wonderful part about Songs of Bone the page count is under 200 pages and the story is written so that you don’t need to have read the previous novel to proceed. In fact, J.R. Snyder is writing the series so that each additional entry can stand on its own which makes for long periods being away from this series that much more bearable. This book is a great change of pace type of story and definitely got me out of a reading slump. Lets get into it.
Asher Norwood is a Sin Eater tasked with combating dark magic and strange creatures. With his trusted raven Aethon and his old pirate friend Rane, they seek jobs and tasks to pay the bills and just get by. One day mysterious client emerges asking for Asher’s help in retrieving a lost and powerful magical artifact. This mysterious turns out to be non other than a saltmer, a mermaid type creature who was betrayed into giving up a magical harp. No residing on a Ghost Ship between the realms of the living, the harp must be returned before the saltmer people discover it is missing and all hell breaks loose. Asher and his crew must prepare for the jump between realms because death awaits them if the mission fails.
I will leave the plot synopsis there to not get into any spoilers. The best part of this book in my opinion was the quick pace and the ability of the author to instantly grab my attention. It has been over 3 years since I first read A Season of Ravens and picking this book up was as if I just finished it yesterday. The magic of the Sin Eaters is also on full display in this story as the plot progresses. Final point I will make is Songs of Bones does touch on some somber themes when it comes to love, family, and betrayals to don’t be surprised if these actually sneak up on you.
In closing, Songs of Bones is a fun continuation of the Sin Eater Tales series and it was really a breath of fresh air compared to my other dark and thick tomes. This is series meant to the casual reader looking for a fun and in some cases twisted adventure to sink their teeth into. I hope you all with give this series a try.
In this second settlment of sin eaters world, Asher and Rane are requested by a particular client to retrieve an enchanted object contolling a legendary ship and that was stolen after a cruel betrayal. Asher and Rane set out on their mission and the show begins, as in the first book, Asher always manages to do good deeds and this always brings him the help he needs. The plot was simple yet very attention grabbing, the characters were very relatable , their interactions were very genuine and realistic, you even feel the warmth of the discussions and the reality of the feelings. Asher's abilities are fully displayed in this book, the potion making, the thinking and the magic control he showed were admirable, not to forget his never ending supply of kindness, humilty and loyalty. I also got to meet again some of the characters I liked in A Season of Ravens and of course, never to forget, the most awesome side-kick ever: Aethon, the gorgeous and very clever raven that always gives an enormous helping hand in the missions. The writing was, simple, fluid giving the story a fast paced rythm , I didn't get bored for a sec and kept turning the pages non stop, it took me few days to read because of my other curretly reading list, otherwise, I would have finished it in one sitting. I highly recommend this book, you don't need to read the first to enjoy this one, but it would be preferable, so that you won't be lost with some of the characters.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily for Booksirens.
Loved this one. It is a continuation of A Season of Ravens narrative, it follows the same cast of characters but it is a contained story in its plot. I would still recommend reading the first book before this one to meet all the characters and experience their previous adventures. The characters in this story are amazing, I love their dynamics and interactions. Length of the story fits the narrative perfectly, it was engaging the whole time. Curious to see what will be Asher's next job.
If you like a short sized adventure with motley crew type of cast, folklore elements and mythical creatures, high stakes but cozy vibes give this a read.
My new favorite of Snyder’s “Sin Eater” tales. The longer format really suits his writing style and gives him more room to develop rich characters, an interesting and creative plot, and fully realized locations that are at times warm and rich and at times creepy and menacing. Looking forward to reading whatever comes next!
This is a short novel that follows the adventure of a sin-eater: Asher Norwood in the dangerous seas, after agreeing to help a mermaid in a bind. Though the fantasy world feels familiar, it has its own unique charm with how the world is built with magic and the portrayal of the mermaid. Also, as a bonus, in the author’s world, there is no discrimination against any gender or sexual orientation, which is written in a pleasantly subtle way.
This book has an easy 4/5 rating from my side for its wonderful, delightful story, which makes it a cozy read for fantasy lovers of all ages. My only complaint would be that I wish it was longer and would take in a more detailed world of the Asher Norwood.
P.S.: Writing this voluntary review for Booksirens after receiving an advance review copy (for free), gave me a chance to discover other books by the author, and I love them as well.
"I disagree with what you sin eaters say—we didn't keep evil from happening that night, we just gave it a different home."
Asher Norwood is back, baby! And so is his raven companion, Aethon. Along with the former pirate, Rane Moxley, the three embark on a dangerous quest for a very unlikely client. This quest brings them face to face with ghost ships, mer, giant aquatic monsters, and—least of all—certain death.
I was beyond excited to embark into a new adventure in this world. A Season for Ravens (Sin Eater Tales #1) was my favorite self-published book of 2020, as well as my selfpub "season" buddy, having been released around the same time as my debut novel Seasons of Albadone. Get it? "Season" buddy?
I am once again pleased by Snyder's output. This is a wonderful sequel! Even though it's been nearly 4 years, the characters haven't missed a beat. I was instantly reintroduced to their banter and camaraderie. The world is alive, the mysteries are thick, and the prose is breezy and easy to digest. If there was one thing, however, that I'm left wanting more of is a larger scope for the series. Not every series needs a world-shattering epic plot, mind you, but in the previous installment there were at least hints about Asher's history. In this sequel we get none of that, and that's a bit disappointing to me.
Songs of Bone reads sort of like a DLC to the first book, but that's not a detriment at all. Anyone can pick up Songs of Bone as a standalone book and enjoy it as the wonderful, fast-paced, adventure that it is. I simply hope further installments in this fantastic series can dive a bit more into what made the first book so special: not its world, magic, or creatures, but its characters.
Asher and Aethon are the core of Sin Eater Tales, and I will be waiting with bated breath for their next great adventure.
Songs of Bone is a really sweet adventure following Asher Norwood, his raven Aethon, and his friend and former pirate Rane Moxley as they complete a dangerous quest from a mysterious client. They have to be brave, resourceful, and cunning to complete their quest and ensure they get paid and survive the endeavour.
I do feel uninformed about Sin Eaters and some of the characters backgrounds, not having read A Season of Ravens. Although you get a general sense of the capabilities of a Sin Eater in this book, but I suspect this is more defined in the first book.
The Songs of Bone is a really well written short read, the characters felt well developed and relatively complex and the plot was detailed but concise. It does fill the slot of 'general adventure fantasy', and reminds me of growing up reading the Magic Treehouse or playing through a questline in Skyrim or Oblivion.
This does feel like a nice series to come back to as a nice palette cleanser and I am genuinely excited to read more of Asher's adventures.
Thank you to J.R.Snyder and BookSirens for the ARC.

Dealing with mer people is never a good idea, but what happens when a saltmer asks for help? A sin eater Asher Norwood gets an interesting offer to hunt down a ghost ship and retrieve a magical item that controls it. Considering the fact that people in the village know the lore about the ghost ship, Jade Duchess, no one is willing to help him.
It’s a great short adventure novel and I won’t say anything else so as not to spoil it. The only thing I wish we got is a longer scene on the ship. It felt rushed. Instead, we got the background story on old Thomas, not that I’m complaining, I enjoyed that part, but just expected the focus to be on action and adventure.
The book belongs to a Sin Eater Tales series and can be read as a standalone, which was what I did, but now I’m interested in picking up the first book in the series “A season of ravens”.
I received an ARC for free in exchange for my honest opinion.
I would describe this book as "Fast paced, feels unfinished." I realize this is the second book in a series, but there was almost no connection to the first book in terms of world building or providing context. As someone who didn't read the first book, I felt I was missing pieces. They didn't break the story, but they broke some of my connection to the characters.
It is very short, I think I finished it in just over an hour. I get the feeling the author is one of those readers who skips the world building and travel adventures between major plot points and just reads the good bits.
This is very much a "just the good bits story" but what it has is good. The scenes are beautifully described, the action is well written and realistic, the characters evoke empathy and connection.
I would have given this book five stars if it was twice as long, I needed some more meat to really love it.

I read J.R. Snyder's first book in the series, A Season of Ravens, and have been waiting for a sequel since! Songs of Bones did not disappoint - it was a great addition to the Sin Eater series!
We again follow Asher on a mission with his trusty raven, Aethon, and his new found friend from the previous book, Rane. They find themselves biting off a little more than they can chew with a new contract that involves saltmer/mermaids and some seafaring adventure.
I was really captivated throughout the whole plot and felt that this was a perfect cozy adjacent book. It has some high stakes and covers deeper themes which made it more involved than a cozy fantasy. But the relationship between Asher and the other characters and the scenes J.R. Snyder paints throughout the story gives a cozy feel.
Songs of Bone, written by J.R. Snyder, is the second book in the series. A fantasy novel with dark Mer magic.
Asher, a sin eater, is given a message to meet someone in a water cave. To his surprise, it's a Mer, a creature similar to mermaids. Even though Mer are not to be associated with humans, she is asking for help on finding a magical bone harp that is used to protect the Mer.
I enjoyed this book and would be interested in other writings by this author. The story was well written, kept me engaged, and the story moved along well. I give this book 4 stars and would recommend it if you like these types of stories. This can be read as a stand-alone.

I really enjoyed A Season of Ravens, the first book in this series so I was excited to read this sequel, Songs of Bone. This book takes all the things I enjoyed about A Season of Ravens and adds even more. It feels like a cozy adventure with friends. There's a lot of folklore and magic and the world feels very whimsical.
I'd recommend this book (and the others in the series) for fans of Michael J Sullivan, Leigh Bardugo, and Naomi Novik.
Great, unusual story. Very well written. Flows smoothly and keeps the reader interested. I understand it was part of a duology - I hadn't read book 1 but there were no "obscure" points in book 2, so it definitely works as a standalone too. It is set in a fantasy world and the author does a great job of bringing it to life. Somehow, I ended up warming up more to the sidekick than to the main character, but that's just a personal preference.
Well written and quick to draw you in. I wish it was longer! I read Book 2 without having read Book 1. I quite enjoyed the story and do feel like it is comprehensive as a standalone. I plan on checking out Book 1 as I’m intrigued in the main characters’ backstories and wonder what I’ve missed.
Looking forward to the rest of the series!

So I dived into this book without having read the first one. Thankfully I was able to pick up everything so I wasn’t confused at all. I love the characters in this and the relationship between Rane and Asher. The bond between Asher and Althea is perfection! Cannot wait to see what mischief er i mean adventures these guys get into in the next book!
4.5/5⭐ More cohesive than the first Sin Eaters book, this is a complete standalone story and a well paced novella. Still somehow straddling the line between dark and cozy fantasy, J.R. Snyder drew me in from the start and held my attention with both beautiful imagery and a strong plot, including underlying moral commentary. I am looking forward to reading book 3.
I only wish I knew why they are called sin eaters; unless I've missed it, that part of the lore has not been explained yet and I wish it had been touched on by now.

It's truly exciting and mysterious adventure, filled with interesting characters and with richly described atmosphere. Loved the supernatural elements.
*Disclaimer, I was sent this book for review by the author, this in no way affects my opinion.
I have loved every instalment in this series so far. I love following Asher through his adventures. The episodic nature of these books have always made then wonderfully self contained yet leaving me excited for the next adventure. These books deserve as much hype as the rest of the cosy fantasy revolution is getting right now!
This story is another adventure/investigation where this time we are looking into a ghost ship. I love the way the author plays with expectations and folklore. These books really do make you reflect while still feeling wholesome and safe escapism.
The characters are always so easy to root for an also feel very much like the kind of people you would want on your side when the going gets tough. So much of Asher is about compassion and understanding.
This is actually the longest story we’ve had in this series which was fantastic at showcasing the author’s wonderful way with words, descriptive writing style and well rounded character building. The episodic nature of these books suits the stories perfectly, making for digestible self contained (to an extent) stories. This story being a little longer suited this specific narrative perfectly and it is clear the author has a masterful level of understanding about how best to pace and convey each tale.
Over the course of this series I have grown to really connect with the characters and recurring ones are a welcome sight on the page.
The folkloric nature of the book leads to a low magic system without feeling contrived. There are no MacGuffins or deus ex machinas going on with the magic and yet it doesn’t loose sight of its tone and feel. The world itself is gorgeous and immersive and I can’t wait to go back.
Overall a wonderful fairytale-like cosy fantasy and a great next instalment in this lovely series.

🌱THE EXCELLENT
~ sin eaters (always fascinate me)
~ merpeople (different kinds) & other beings
~ straightforward yet interesting mission
~ instead of romance, excellent layers of friendships
When a saltmer comes out of the depths, requesting that the sin eater & his sailor partner recover a bone harp, capable of controlling a ghost ship, they reluctantly accept the contract because the booty is good & the cause compelling. As the team finds a captain brave enough to sail up to a deranged ghost ship - wit, companionship & creative problem solving will save the day.
🦖 I enjoyed the simplicity & straightforwardness of the story. It’s an adventure where, meeting new people, learning about the history of others & the land where you live creates & solidify bonds between the characters.

🌱THE MEH
~ nothing overly WOW just a solid overall calm ride of a story
Songs of Bone is a very well written book with a compelling story and interesting new interpretations of traditional folklore. It follows Sin Eater Asher Norwood and his companion Rane Moxley as they take on a dangerous contract. They meet with a 'saltmer', a salt-water mermaid, and are tasked with retrieving the bone harp from a ghost ship.
This book is honestly amazing. I would suggest it to anyone who enjoys fantasy, magic, and/or pirate stories.
