This epistolary novel takes place in 1947 during the partition of India. The story is written in the diary of a twelve year old girl Nisha who is writing to her deceased mother. Although her mother was Muslim and her father is Hindi, her family are secular cultural Hindi’s. They lived in current day Pakistan and are forced to flee on a harrowing journey across the boarder into India. She questions the need to divide the country across religious lines, following her father’s belief in Gandhi’s call for unity. This was a tumultuous time in India and Pakistan’s history, reading about the experience through the eyes of a child was powerful.
