This is one of the most loved and talked about novels in Assamese literature. Even though most probably have had the chance of reading it earlier in life, I, however, had the pleasure of reading Aseemat Jar Heral Seema only in 2016. I had to find out what it is about the book that I always wanted to read as a child, because it was so popular.
Written in the memory of those who lost their lives in the 1942 Indian Revolution[?(Quit India Movement)], Aseemat Jar Heral Seema is a story of love, loss, patriotism and valour.
In this tale of Kanchan Boruah's powerful utopia, I haven't realised how peaceful and happy people were until one night a horrific piece of news changed it all. Not only the capital didn't send any military force to protect them and their land from the upcoming war but whatever ammunition they got was limited.
This review would not be fair if I wouldn't write about how beautifully all the characters are written, with tiniest details. One of my favourite characters has to be Jodhu Khura. Poor man has been through so much in life! Reading through the interaction between him and Umaalways reminds me of my grandfather.
The humour in this novel surely has aged like a fine wine.
Years ago when I read it for the first time, Gauri was my least favourite character, but re-reading it has changed my views entirely, I like her. She's polite and yet so reserved. I relate to her more now.
Without going much into details, I would write that this book by the end has left me in tears both the times. The execution of some scenes is very beautifully done. This book deserves to be read for years to come.
However, I wouldn't give it 5 stars for certain reasons. For instance: 1. I will be completely honest here, the book starts off with such a beautiful dreamy scene, like, the narrator has the most beautiful and perfect family that I know of. His wife, whom he was avoiding for the first few days of their marriage, now cannot believe a life without her because she has such an astounding personality. "Maya, do you know what I feel when I see that smile on your face?" "What" "As if you don't have any regrets, any grudges in this world." Indeed, the character of her is so well written inspiring me in many possible ways. But, what bugs me about this is that I read like 6 pages of this family only to find on the 7th page that our narrator has been dreaming all along. This is a disappointment. This brought a complete distrust between me and the author.
2. Uma has been introduced as a beautiful lady, no one else like her. Enters Gauri So beautiful, just like a princess(or a goddess?). The narrator wonders if there's anyone more beautiful then Gauri Enters Champa The narrator is sure there's no one else in the entire Kamal Nagar who is as gorgeous and beautiful as Champa Wait, who is more beautiful now, Uma or Gauri or Champa? I know it doesn't matter but my curious heart wants to know! This book keeps on reminding me from time to time about the divine beauty of those women, not saying that I am jealous but well.. (Don't correct me if I am wrong)
3. The first person narrative not done right. Chandan, the one who has been narrating the story to us, has also been telling us what is going on in the other person's mind. And it's not just the fact that he is assuming(which would have been equally boring to assume about people all the time) about others, but telling us about what they are feeling or why are they doing what they are doing. At some point, the narration completely changes to Third person omniscient, which confuses me.
The first battle sequence was rushed and I cannot deny it.
But my love for this book is incredible, and I would gladly give 3 and a half stars for the characters, dialogues, humour and the unique and moving plot.

Book : Asimat Jar Heral Seema ( Who Lost Their Limits in Infinity...) Author : Bhuban Mohan Baruah under the pen name of Kanchan Baruah. Genre : Novel. First Published : 1945.
‘Asimat Jar Heral Seema’ literary means ‘Who Lost Their Limits In Infinity’ in English. As you have noticed from the name that this name is a little strange. It's confusing. It is very confusing to begin with. But don’t get surprised by this name only. There are many more surprises waiting for you in the pages of the book.
Basically, the story of the book is set 1300 years ago, describing the memories of the previous birth of a professor named Ajit, narrated by himself to 4 of his childhood friends. He narrates the story of the simple, down to earth people of the province, Kamalnagar. The story of their beautiful lives facing the most dreaded consequence unexpectedly. As a large army approaches to attack Kamalnagar. They face those enemies with valor but were unable to defeat them. Later, the commander of the enemies dies due to a fire in the gunpowder chamber in the palace where he establishes his supremacy in Kamalnagar. As a result of which the rest of the enemies also went back.
Sounds simple, right? In a summary like this, you will definetely find this story very simple. Just like 2+2= 4. But once you read this book you will know that this story is not something like adding two numbers, but the whole chapter of trigonometry aur you can even say calculus.
There are some characters like Chandan(male protagonist, the narrator), Gauri(female protagonist), Ashok, Uma, Parvati, Lakshminarayana who are just eagerly waiting for the readers to amaze them with their bravery, devotion to their homeland and brotherhood.
And there comes this character named Champa, I don't think anyone can put the feeling he has for this perticular character in words. In the story, she is only a 19 year old orphan, but the pain that she is given by the author will make you cry. Cry like a baby. her love for her motherland, her philosophical definitions of her own life, her story of unconditional love will remain in your heart for the rest of your life
According to me, the story of the book is beautifully written to teach you everything about loyalty, life, love, valor, sacrifice, patriotism, tragedy, brotherhood, friendship with a pinch of our Assamese culture and traditions. And above all, I assure you that after reading this book, the imprints of the story is going to stay with you forever.
A masterpiece of love, despair, sacrifice, longing and romance. All bundled up to make this story into an incredible emotional sensation that will last with me for a lifetime. Kanchan Baruah has made me feel as if he has witnessed the beautiful city of Kamal Nagar and the daily lives of it's inhabitants and beautifully crafted this into an engrossing novel. Thank you.
Today is Bhogali Bihu and coincidentally today I completed reading this book . Every 'khati Axomiya' bibliophile recommends this book and I finally got the time and opportunity to pick it up and I must say the story manages to keep the reader engrossed throughout . The book is so vivid in description that it transports the reader to the world of Chandan(চন্দন), Sompa (চম্পা), Gouri(গৌৰী) and keeps them engrossed until the end. One very beautiful aspect about the story is that it describes the typical Assamese rural life in a very relatable way. In my opinion, teens & young adults will particularly enjoy the fantastical set and the love and war theme set along a evocative portrayal of nature and the laidback life of the people of 'Kamal-Nagar (কমল-নগৰ)'.
It's a brilliantly described story of love, life, war, loss, pain which will definitely remain in the hearts and minds of the reader for a long time.
I remember reading this novel as young as 13 years old. I was so obsessed with Champa, her wit, beauty, sarcasm, and obviously her tragic eternal love for Chandan. Writing this review refreshes the blurred images of them in my mind. This book used to take me to the banks of Boitarani and makes me Champa there. For a long time after reading this novel, Champa was my alter-ego. It is rich in imagination and prose style. The novel shows the beauty of Assamese villages, the unembellished people there, the value of love and family, the pain of loss and death, and the horror of war. Maybe I will be able to be a bit more critical had I read it at my current age, but I wish to keep the novel as it was to my 13-year-old self.

This book is lingering between dream and reality. The best thing of this book is the title. This title is related to every situation and with every people. The author has written this book with justification to every little situation and minor- characters.
