I've known the Subansiri River from my school textbooks of Geography and General Knowledge. Later, the NHPC's Hydro-power project made Subansiri an everyday news during my College days. Likewise, I've known the novel "Miri Jiyori" by Rajanikanta Bordoloi from the repeated quiz and competitive exam questions. Roaming around the Assam Book Fair 2023, I thought to give this a read, set in 1894, the author weaved such a heart warming love story along the banks of the Subansiri River and alongside portrayed the history, customs, rituals, the animistic Gods and Goddesses, the musings, Bihu songs and Naams of the Mishing Community. About the then district administration of Lakhimpur District, its villages like Pothalipam, Bhebelichuk. The innocent life and love affair of two Mishing youth, Jonkie and Panei dotted with the poems of Wordsworth, Goldsmith takes on tumultuous ups and downs and such twist of the plots is more than admirable. Miri Jiyori is considered one of the most notable works of Rajanikanta Bordoloi who is also known as Walter Scott of Assam.
Classic and epic love story of the miri/mishing tribe of assam. Story boarders within banks of river subanshiri based on main characters jonki and panei
