The Diabolical

Rate this book
Bruno Johnson is a wanted fugitive—and unless he helps the Costa Rican police, they’re turning him in

Ex-cop, ex-con Bruno Johnson is hiding from US law enforcement in Costa Rica with his wife, Marie, and the twelve children they rescued from toxic homes in south central Los Angeles. Bruno works at the Lido Cabana Bar at the Punta Bandera Hotel, and his friend, Karl Drago, is getting married on the beach right outside. After the festivities, Bruno and Marie go skinny dipping in the ocean, but they’re quickly interrupted by a visit from law enforcement.

A shooting has just occurred at El Gato Gordo nightclub, and the victim is a prominent local figure and Bruno’s close friend. The chief of police asks Bruno to help investigate, but the stakes are higher than ever—if Bruno doesn’t find the shooter, the chief will turn him over to US authorities.

Everything is complicated further when Bruno becomes a victim of a crime himself, realizing that someone else may be after him. Bruno has to juggle the police investigation with figuring out who’s targeting him—if he drops the ball, it might be the last thing he ever does.

Book #11 in the Bruno Johnson series and it certainly hasn’t lost any of its appeal.

Ex cop (and ex con) Bruno, is now living in Costa Rica with his wife Marie and 12 kids (all rescued from abusive homes). The move to Costa Rica was necessitated by the fact that he’s a wanted man in the US, and facing imprisonment. However, he’s given an ultimatum by the Costa Rican police that unless he helps them with an investigation into a shooting at the Gato Gordo nightclub, they’ll turn him in.

Six people were shot dead at the club, including a very good friend of Bruno’s, so it’s in his own interest to discover who committed this terrible crime, and also why.

In between working as a bartender at the Punta Bandera Hotel, investigating the shooting, and trying to maintain some sort of family life, Bruno is pulled every which way, and it doesn’t help that his boss (The Ice Maiden), keeps the staff under constant surveillance, resulting in threats to terminate their employment. She orders Bruno to remove a body, along with any evidence from a room in the hotel - and from there on in the action really kicks in!

Another twisty, action packed storyline, full of evil characters, but with plenty of light relief in the form of Waldo, Bruno’s friend Drago’s huge Rottweiler dog, who plays a very large part in the story - this dog has a mind of his own, and he’s nobody’s fool! But it provides lots of laughs regarding Bruno’s relationship with the wonderful Waldo. Recommended.

“The Diabolical is a fantastic, fast-paced, twisty ride. Every page is packed with authenticity and style and Putnam is at the top of his game with this one. I love Bruno Johnson—a Travis McGee meets Jack Reacher hero who pulls you in from the first page in a story that keeps you guessing until the very end.” —Matthew Quirk, New York Times best-selling author

“The Diabolical is Bruno at his absolute best: quick-witted, quick with his fists, and frighteningly formidable in protecting those he loves.” —Glen Erik Hamilton, award-winning author of Island of Thieves.

A somewhat different escape to Costa Rico!

All Bruno Johnson, former cop and convict (Yeah! Interesting combination and obviously part of backstory) wanted was to provide a safe haven for his wife Marie and their fourteen children—those of their own and those they’d rescued from at risk homes in South Central Los Angeles. All had a huge hold on his heart
In Tamarindo, Costa Rico he felt out of sight. He’s working at a resort as the beach bartender “Juan Gaylord.” That was until a night club massacre of six people placed Tamarindo squarely in the public eye.
Bruno finds himself in the middle of a Russian mafia and the Mob’s war over stolen loot, the local Justice department breathing down his neck, the police chief threatening extradition, the FBI, then he’s mistaken for a jewel thief, and oh, there’s the Ice Princess! (his boss)
Fast paced, a tad Quentin Tarantino, this is somewhat different thriller with bodies littering the pages. Oh, and more than a few comic moments with his friend’s Rottweiler, Waldo!
I obviously can’t get enough of Bruno because I’m off to read the rest of the series!

An Oceanview ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

Bruno Johnston #11

Ex-cop, ex-con Bruno Johnston is hiding from US law enforcement in Costa Rica with his wife, Maria, and the twelve children they've rescued from the toxic homes in south central Los Angeles. Bruno works at the Lido Cabana Bar at the Punta Bandera Hotel, and his friend, Karl Drago, is getting married on the beach right outside. After the festivities, Bruno and Marie go skinny-dipping in the ocean, but they're quickly interrupted by a visit from law enforcement.

This story had everything I like - mystery, romance, great characters, and a strong plot. Unfortunately, life kept interrupting my reading, otherwise I would not have been able to put this book down. The pace is fast in this very twisted read. I like the author's writing style. The local police chief needs Bruno's help in solving the murders of six people, and Bruno has no choice but to help him.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #OceanviewPublishing and the author #DavidPutnam for my ARC of #TheDiabolical in exchange for an honest review.

The Diabolical
David Putnam
reviewed by Lou Jacobs

Embark on a thrilling roller coaster ride through the streets and alleys of Tamarindo, Costa Rica with David Putnam’s eleventh Bruno Johnson novel. In this gripping tale, Bruno will stop at nothing to ensure justice for his family and friends. This book stands alone, thanks to Putnam’s skill in weaving necessary backstory seamlessly into the narrative.

Bruno’s complex history began over thirty years ago with the violent crime task force in Los Angeles. Revered by his adversaries, he was known for his tenacious and sometimes violent approach to justice. His past includes a stint in prison for avenging his daughter’s murder. Now, he resides in Costa Rica with his wife, Maria, and their thirteen rescued children, saved from abusive homes in Los Angeles. Their efforts are legendary, likened to an underground railroad for abused children. Despite his fear of extradition and outstanding kidnapping warrants, Bruno remains unchallenged. Known for skirting the line in pursuit of criminals, he currently works under the alias ‘Gaylord’ at the Punta Bandera Hotel and Beach Club, ever vigilant against threats of extradition.

Bruno’s life takes a turn when his best friend, Karl Drago, marries his beautiful bride Layla on the beach, accompanied by his faithful Rottweiler, Waldo, trained to respond to German commands. Unbeknownst to Bruno, Karl entrusts him with Waldo’s care. Shortly after, he’s summoned to a crime scene by Chief Hernandez.

Chief Hernandez, aware of Bruno’s skills, requests his assistance at the scene of Tamarindo’s first-ever murder – a brutal shootout at the nightclub El Gato Gorda. Recognizing two of the victims, Bruno is drawn into the investigation, offering insights to help solve the case.

Meanwhile, Bruno contends with Otis Brasher, a regular at the bar, who hires him for protection. Bruno suspects Otis’s slovenly appearance is a disguise, doubting his story of being a white-collar criminal hiding out in Costa Rica. Complications escalate when the Russian mob mistakes Bruno for “The Genie,” a notorious diamond thief.

David Putnam proves his storytelling prowess, skillfully intertwining complex plotlines in this fast-paced, engaging novel. The book’s multidimensional characters add warmth, humor, and authenticity, reflecting Putnam’s deep understanding of law enforcement. This memorable tale, rich with well-crafted characters and a compelling plot, will linger with readers long after the final page.

Bruno Johnson is one of those guys you almost hate to love; a former LAPD officer who got in serious trouble (and spent time in jail as a result) who's now happily married to Marie but living with her and their 14 kids - mostly rescues - in exile in Costa Rica. He's also prone to reverting to his former self, even after he's promised his cherished wife that he's done with that phase of his life.

This installment of the series - the 11th - begins after a deadly shoot-em-up in a local nightclub that included a dear friend of Bruno and Marie, the police chief - who is aware of Bruno's real identity despite his "cover" as a bartender at a local tourist hotel - asks for help in solving the murders. When the chief goes so far as to threaten him with turning him over to U.S. authorities, Bruno feels he has no choice but to try despite his dislike of the chief.

Bruno's good friend Karl Drago, who recently married the dead friend's daughter, has taken his bride on a honeymoon, leaving Bruno in charge of his loyal Rottweiler, Waldo - and, as readers become acutely aware of as the story progresses, Waldo is not a Bruno fan. Neither, apparently, are some very bad guys who seem to be out to get him, nor is his boss, the hard-nosed Darla, who rules the hotel with an iron fist (any just about anything else she can get her hands on). One who's sold on Bruno, though, is a rotund guy named Otis Brasher who sits at the bar all day drinking grasshoppers and insists on hiring Bruno as a bodyguard (it seems some very bad guys are out to get him as well).

Confused? Well, so is Bruno - especially when more dead bodies pile up and it starts to look as if Otis's predicament and that bar shoot-out may be connected. It's also starting to look as though Bruno may have to relocate his entire brood elsewhere lest he be found and returned to the United States, where he's wanted on charges of kidnapping and murder (how that hasn't happened before this, especially since just about everyone in Costa Rica seems to know who Bruno really is, remains a mystery to me, but hey - all in good fun). All told, it's another fun romp - and of course, you'll have to read it for yourself to get down to the nitty gritty. Great series, and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review another pre-release copy.

To protect his family, Bruno has no choice but to help the local chief of police to investigate a
shooting at a nightclub. One of the victims turns out to be a close friend of Bruno's, the doctor
who recently delivered his son. What was the doctor doing at the club? His investigation
is hampered by his job at the Punta Bandera Hotel's Lido Bar where he has been hired by a
guest as a bodyguard. When Bruno is attacked, he realizes someone is after him and his family
may not be safe. Is it someone from his past or does it have to do with the shooting and other
happenings at the hotel. A fast, action packed read.

This book is for me. Recommended to anyone who loves to read fast-paced thrillers and hard-boiled crime fiction, AND those who enjoy a protagonist who lives by his own creed and relentlessly pursues justice for the ones he loves—even if it means breaking the law. This novel touches the heart as hardcore ex-cop and father Bruno Johnson fights for justice to remain safely in Costa Rica with his wife and the twelve children they’ve rescued from toxic homes.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

“The Diabolical” is a crime thriller novel written by David Putnam. It is the eleventh book in the Bruno Johnson series. The story follows Bruno Johnson, (an ex-cop AND an ex-con who is hiding from US law enforcement in Costa Rica with his wife and twelve children). When he becomes a victim of a crime himself, he has to juggle the police investigation with figuring out who’s targeting him. The book is a fast-paced and twisty ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

David Putnam has done an excellent job of creating an authentic and compelling story that will keep you guessing until the very end. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is well-crafted. The book is full of action, making it an exciting read.

Overall, “The Diabolical” is an engaging and suspenseful read that will appeal to crime thriller fans. The book is well-written, and the story is engaging from start to finish. If you’re looking for a thrilling read that will keep you guessing until the very end, then
Until next time, dear readers, “The Diabolical” is definitely worth a read.

The Diabolical by David Putnam

This is a Bruno Johnson Crime book. Bruno, whose solution to every negative issue is blood and bone, has mellowed. He may still be a little crusty on the outside but he is a major marshmallow on the inside for his fourteen kids. His job as a bartender at the Punta Bandera Hotel and Beach Club in Costa Rico is impacted when some friends are slaughtered at a local nightclub.
A diamond heist, philandering, a hot psychotic manager, and Waldo the not-so-wonder dog add to the eclectic mix.
Putnam puts together an entertaining story with some unusual trappings for the hotel golf course.
I enjoyed the story and recommend it.

The Diabolical is definitely a rip-roaring ride! Bruno and his wife, Marie, are living in Costa Rica, along with their 12 rescued children. They are also hiding out from US law enforcement.

Mr. Putman was a street cop and he says: "Bruno goes around the law to champion the rights of children and rid the world of the villains who continue to haunt my dreams." In The Diabolical he uses a harrowing event from his past to create one of the last scenes of the book.

Although The Diabolical isn't the style of writing I usually enjoy reading, I found the story to be compelling and the characters to be well-developed. (Of course, my favorite character was the dog, Waldo.) I felt as though I were actually there, petting Waldo, and waiting for Bruno to mix my drink!

Many thanks to both #OceanviewPublishing and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Diabolical.

First off, I’d like to thank David Putnam and Oceanview/Goodreads for the ARC of The Diabolical. The author’s experience in law enforcement lended authenticity to the characters and the storyline.

Well, I just found a new author with a nice backlog to keep me occupied! And this story includes a hilarious Rottweiler!!
The new Bruno Johnson novel was outstanding, written with a frenetic pace. Bruno aka Gaylord landed himself a bartending job in a beachside hotel in Costa Rica to escape So Cal law enforcement. With his wife Marie, 12 kids & a nanny, they had their hands full. Add babysitting his honeymooning best friend’s Rottweiler Waldo and it’s all fun & action. But what would a thriller be without a beautiful boss who is not who she seems to be; crooked local law, an always sloshed local who literally stinks up the bar; and so much more but what’s the fun reading it here.

I won one of the arc books that David Putnam gave away. I received a copy of the book, "The Diabolical." It is number 11 in the Bruno Johnson series of books. I am so thankful for the opportunity to read this book. There is just something authentic about books of this nature written by people who have been in law enforcement.

What lengths will you go to to rescue children from their toxic environment? Would you break the law? Bruno and Marie answered this question and created a wonderfully crafted book. You can read this as a stand-alone, but if you do, then you will want to read the rest. I know there is more to Bruno's character, and I'm excited at the chance to get the rest of the books and find out. After all, Bruno has been part of a criminal world, one filled with danger and violence.

I cannot help but wonder if Bruno could ever settle down. The truth keeps pulling him back. It isn't just law enforcement that draws him into danger, but a deep desire to see the criminals caught. Even when Bruno could walk away, he still goes after the criminals. These characters are rich and deeply thought out. The funniest is that the good guys are criminals but for all the right reasons. You care what happens to him and Marie. You want the best outcome for them (and the kids). Even the dog, Waldo, has character.

The pacing was perfect. The complicated plot makes the story more intense and captivating. I was impressed with Putnam's ability to weave a subplot into the main plotline. I want to know more about Bruno, so getting the previous books is first on my list. I suggest anyone who loves the bad guys getting just deserts to read this book.

What a ride!! Buckle your seat belts and hang onto your hats! This is my first Bruno read in the Bruno series. Very entertaining and fast paced. The added humor is a bonus. I received a complimentary electronic ARC of this excellent thriller from Netgalley, author David Putnam, and publisher Oceanview Publishing. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read The Diabolical of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am always pleased with a new Putnam novel. He writes of people you would like to know, those few good guys and dolls out there holding the front lines for us all. This is number 11 in this series, but completely stand-alone. However like all good series, the story feels richer, the characters more personal, when these books are read as a series.

And we are back with ex-LA police detective Bruno Johnson and his lovely wife Marie, and their thirteen children, counting their recently born son, Tobias. No, 14 at their home in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, as they also will be babysitting another infant child, Daph, one of questionable parentage Layla had rescued after Bruno helped her escape kidnappers in Las Angeles in number 10, The Scorned. Bruno's best friend Karl Drago and his soon-to-be-wife Layla, daughter of Bruno and Marie's best friends Aleck and Alisa Vargas were getting married today. And let's not forget Waldo, Drago's black Rottweiler, who is the ringbearer in this wedding. Bruno is the best man. With that many kids around, it is always a good plan to have a good plan. The only thing Bruno has failed to adequately consider is Darla Figueroa, his micromanaging food and beverage boss at the Punta Bandera Beach Club and Spa where he is employed as a bartender. Though not long on the job, Darla had a way of destroying schedules and harassing her employees right into the unemployment line. Bruno has a LOT of mouths to feed. His Mom and Dad, housekeeper Rosie, wife Marie, those hungry 14 children, and now Waldo who won't be welcome on the honeymoon. He needs to keep his job. Waldo drinks a lot of beer, too. Steaks and beer. Not spoiled, at all. But the way things seem to be headed, Waldo might just come in handy, after all. It would be nice if he actually liked Bruno, though.

There are two opposing personalities in constant turmoil within Bruno’s brain. There is a version from his past life as a hard-nosed LAPD detective and his current life as an ordinary husband and father. This new persona is hiding from the law he once stood for in Costa Rica. This newer Bruno is a lowly barkeep at a swanky hotel. His thirteen kids and wife Marie are his priority while he serves drunken tourists. His boss is a tyrant constantly threatening employees with termination. Can Bruno ever leave his past and be just another quiet neighbor down the street? His new identity is almost pierced and he could lose everyone he cares about.
His best friend, Drago, is away on his honeymoon and has left Bruno in charge of Waldo, a Rottweiler with a mind of his own. Waldo is undoubtedly the hero of the story and always makes me smile. There’s been a bloody nightclub shooting with many victims. A connection to one of the hotel’s wealthy patrons puts Bruno in perilous situations. Marie is very close to one of the victims of the shooting and her medical expertise is repeatedly required. She is a tolerant and loving wife but Bruno pushes her resolve to a breaking point. Trying to figure out who were the good guys and who was a criminal in this plot had me constantly perplexed. Even the local Police Chief was shady. There is the Russian gang, general thugs, bodies in very strange places and Bruno is always in danger of being sent back to the US facing serious criminal charges. It was a complicated and unpredictable plot full of nonstop action.
I was late discovering this series, now I’m always eager for the next installment. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital advance reader copy of “The Diabolical” Bruno Johnson Crime Series #11, by David Putnam, and to Oceanview Publishing. These are all my own honest personal thoughts and opinions given voluntarily without expectation of any compensation.

Bruno Johnson # 11

I discovered this author not long ago and I fast became a huge fan. I simply love how he tucks in some soft humour between the lines while he keeps the suspense moving at a fast pace. This is a twisty ride that had me on the edge of my seat from the opening page...I simply loved it. The plot is well crafted and with its well-developed characters: Bruno, ex-cop/ex-con now a bartender at a trendy hotel, in Costa Rica, has a lot to content with especially his boss the Ice Queen, my favourite character is Waldo, a Rottweiler with a mind of his own....with the many drunken tourists we have a lot to keep us fascinated. Of course Bruno has a lovely family his wife Marie and his thirteen children there to support him. he also has to content himself with a chief of police that is shady and to spice the story and gives us the shivers Mr Putman makes him face Russian gang and a few general thugs...What a complicated and unpredictable development Mr. Putnam penned in “The Diabolical”.

It opens as a shooting just occurred at El Gato Gordo nightclub, the victim is a prominent local figure and Bruno’s close friend. Bruno is asked to help by the chief of police finding the shooter and if he doesn’t, the chief will turn him over to US authorities.

Don’t drop the ball Bruno or you are out....

This series can be read in any order all books stand on their own and can be read in any order.

I had not read a Bruno Johnson book before, and it took me a while to get comfortable with the writing style, but once I did, I enjoyed it. Lots of things I didn't see coming and a very satisfying ending. You can read and enjoy this without having read the first ones, but I plan to go back and see how this all started. I particularly liked the dog, Waldo. It would be nice to see more of him. I received this as an arc from NetGalley and am under no pressure for a positive review.

Bruno was a policeman in California before he went on the run with his wife and so many children. At least he landed in a beautiful place. Seems everyone in the town is escaping legal issues from the states. He is working as a barkeeper in a hotel so life should be calm. Yet nothing is calm at all. The police chief asks for help on a mass murder case. From then all the book is off and running with so much action, misunderstandings, and a dog that has no loyalty. This book is a good story with characters we can not trust, a family he loves and Russian thugs. What's not to like??!!
