Foxx Honeywell here. You know those fun stories where nothing goes wrong and everything is happy and joyful…yeah, that is not this book. This book is where everything goes wrong—multiple times. Horribly wrong. Because sadly, there are people out there who hate others simply for existing. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Our story picks up a few months after the whole crazy cult thing, right before the horrible, terrifyingly awful holiday called…Christmas. Because, of course, why wouldn’t we end up back on the job right when not only is it bloody cold outside, but when the ho-ho-hoing menace is plaguing poor innocent vampires everywhere?

Anyway, we go on one hunt, and things are relatively normal-ish. It's not until the next one where…well, I maybe almost die. What follows is some resurfacing trauma…and a fair few meltdowns. No doubt terrifying my psycho of a partner, Harlow. Who, by the way, through all this seems okay…maybe. A big maybe. So, yeah, that happens. And you know, if that was all that happened, it would have been fine. Really, it would—mostly. It’s just that what followed…really drove home all those years of no therapy. Like a blast in the face from my past nightmare-inducing trauma. I’m sure it will be fine?

CONTENT WARNING: This is a slow burn M/M paranormal romance series with heat. This book ends on a soft cliffhanger. There will be blood, violence, gore, torture, death, trauma induced panic attacks, mentions of SA (no on page details), along with religious beliefs used in the justification of abuse, torture and death. Please do not read if you find any of the previous triggering.

Shelby Rhodes is a lover and writer of MM Paranormal Romance novels, but any genre is up for grabs. She loves building worlds and creating new realities. In her books you can expect to find a mix of humor and fluff with a dash of blood and violence. I swear I tried to resist liking these silly books but I give up because it’s impossible not to fall for this ridiculous pint-size twink. He’s a man-child 🤦🏻‍♀️ yet I absolutely loved him . I have no idea why I liked this book more than the first one but it simply grew on me so it’s safe to say the series is an acquired taste. Both characters are childish and OTT yet they’re oh so perfect for each other. There’s also lots and lots of fucking , breeding , hole-cum-filling etc bla bla. I don’t care much for this kind of frenzied sex marathon so I skipped a lot . Instead, what I like the most is how nicely their emotional connection evolved . And just like in the first book I laughed a lot because that fun-sized vampire is hilarious. 😁

I loved this second installment! Two books in, and I'm wholly obsessed with Foxx and Harlow: their dynamic? Now, that is what I live for.

I thiiiiink I might have loved book one a smidge more (but it could have easily been my brain's fault; it's been Sanremo week here in Italy, and if you know any Italians or a bit of Italian culture, you'll know it's literally our holy week, our collective brains are hijacked by music and trashy meme culture, everything else be damned), but I still adored "Taste of Fear".

I was looking forward to discovering more of Foxx's past, and let me tell you, my heart broke into a million pieces witnessing all the trauma, past and present, he's been put through. Poor baby! I love that literal ball of sunshine (*with a sadistic streak to boot though!) to death: he deserves all the happiness, and all the safety and affection in the universe. Thankfully, he's got Harlow to protect him: I'm a SUCKER for hurt/comfort and the big, badass, cold grump going all protector mode on their love interest is always going to make my heart soar and swoon.

< “Shit, Foxx,” he heard Harlow swear. He flinched, whimpering as the human got onto the bed and pulled him into his arms. Foxx clung to Harlow, his tears breaking free again.
“Ah, fuck.” Harlow ran his hand down Foxx’s back. “I’m not really good at this shit, you know? Comforting is not really… in my vocabulary. I’m more of a ‘shoot the problem’ type of person,” Harlow mumbled, sounding out of sorts. “All I can say is I won’t let them hurt you.” >

I adored the slow-burn pace Shelby Rhodes has decided to set for this series: the steam and chemistry have been there from the start (and the steam is *chef's kiss* absolutely delicious), but seeing their relationship slowly deepen into something more has been a delight and I CANNOT WAIT to see what book three will bring.

CWs/TWs: religion motivated torture, abuse and SA (in the past, described), kidnapping, violence, torture, death.

First of all I love Foxx Honeywell more than anything, and I will read this series again and again. My poor Foxx goes through so much in this book but Harlow is right there for him every time!

Harlow’s surprise over having affectionate and protective feelings for Foxx and being disturbed by them is just icing on the cake of one of my new favorite series.😂 Imma need more people to be reading Shelby Rhodes’ books!

Pacing, plot and most of all the characters relationships are all super solid. And the sex? HOT 🥵

Welp! It is safe to say this book is not like The Undead Detective Agency. At least with how much Harlow and Foxx love seeing and committing violence (towards the bad guys of course). This book had a lot more angst and action towards the end. The beginning seemed a little slow. I wasn't averse to it. But the beginning of the book set us up for the 2nd half. Who knew a book about a cute, short, talkative vampire and his grumpy, might-be psychopathic human partner could tackle issues like religious discrimination, trauma and medical inequity amongst minorities so well. This is why I will never understand people who say fiction is soft reading or not real reading and is not viewed in as enlightened as reading non-fiction. No hate to non-fiction readers at all, but reading fiction is sometimes an easier way to swallow some very hard truths.

Anyway I digress. The book was a great read and ended with Harlow having a personal crisis and I cannot wait to see how he reconciles his *shudders* "Feelings" towards Foxx.

Read this with my book club.
It would have been better if it had decent editing.
I enjoyed Harlow as a character but found Fox to be too immature. The sex scenes were horribly cringe as Fox comes across as a child and the whole thing just felt off.
Outside of the characters relationship, there were few good action scenes but nothing the author promised in the content warnings. If anything this is a super fluffy sweet story.

There’s a cliffhanger but I wasn’t invested enough for it to concern me. I don’t know if I’ll read anymore by this author.

a stunning heartbreaking tale with trigger warnings

Rating: 5🌈

Before getting into the review, two things. One, these books definitely need to be read in the order they are written in. Secondly, heed the author’s trigger warnings. If you’re familiar with the series or author, then as a reader the content won’t necessarily be as much of a surprise but emotionally it’s still powerful and moving. Especially as it’s got extreme torture, mental, physical and traumatic moments at its core. On page scenes. So read the notes.

This isn’t to dissuade a reader from diving into the story but to inform those who will have issues with those elements in advance so informed choices can be made.

Now as to Taste of Fear. Its excellent. Heartbreaking and a stunning story that will stick with you for some time after you have finished reading it.

Possibly because the manner in which Rhodes does two things simultaneously. The relationship between vampire Foxx Honeywell and scarred human hunter Harlow is progressing uniquely, given each of their respective personalities and histories. Harlow is the one that’s the most perplexed about his odd behavior and feelings towards his vampire partner. Foxx represents so many new aspects to his life he never thought he would have. First sexual encounter with a man, then lots of sexual encounters. Now he’s living with him. And thinking about the vampire, a lot. A stunning reversal of his previous life. The growth and development of the dynamic of this weirdly complex duo is compelling and powerful.

While Rhodes, through scenes both humorous and murderous, give the reader a sense of deepening affection between Foxx and Harlow, a case arises that, adjacent to everything else that has been going on, starts to build a sense of high anxiety and suspense. That something truly horrific is coming.

And it’s target is Foxx.

I can’t begin to tell you how effective Rhodes narrative is here, as chapter by chapter, like a disastrous tragedy we see coming but are unable to stop, the horror slowly creeps in, deathly clues dropping. The reader is deeply apprehensive but still needing to read onward.

I won’t go further into the story line or the reasons for the trigger warnings. Yes, they are necessary for the situation, the plot, and for readers because it’s so real, the emotional connection between us and the characters are very impactful and profound. It will hurt.

I won’t say I enjoyed this. But I did love it on another level. Such outstanding work. It changes the characters fundamentally. It’s shattering. And now I’ll have to wait for the next one for the ramifications to set in.

If you love Shelby Rhodes, dark paranormal fiction. This is the series and story for you. I’m highly recommending this.

If you love paranormal romance but in a lighter vein ( real pun intended), there are other equally terrific books to explore.

Happy reading!

I have been eagerly waiting for this book to come out ever since I read the first one. I am enamored by Foxx's character and I'm so glad that he's back in action!

This book was packed full of more despicable people commiting heinous crimes, snarky banter, shenanigans, and our two MC's getting hurt. I honestly don't know how to write this review without giving anything away, so I'm going to try to stick to the basics.

I really enjoy how Shelby write this series, it brings me so much joy to read this series. And even though there was a bit of a gap between the first book and this one, you couldn't tell! Still as fabulous as the first book was. I will say, this one is much more full of those action scene moments. And in this book we really got to see Harlow's 'psycho' tendencies come out to play... Along with him discovering that he actually cares for his brat, (Foxx.)

Foxx's character is so adorable! He's sassy, snarky, outgoing and cares about making a change for other paranormal beings. Even though he has murderous tendencies, he still cares deeply about people that become important to him, as well as caring about the matters that are special to him. I really enjoyed all of the detailed descriptions of Foxx's sun suits, they are described so adorably!! I was quite surprised by the fact that Foxx is a Christmas Grinch! I expected it from Harlow but not from Foxx, although, his MC did explain why he disliked the holiday which did make sense...

Overall a really enjoyable story to read! It's full of humor, sass, Foxx acting like a cat, handmade sweaters, along with homemade bread, and plenty of ideas on how to destroy Christmas decorations.

This series has me in a chokehold. And I'm not complaining.

Harlow just barely held back his laugh when Foxx plopped face down into bed, then blindly crawled over and tried to bury himself back into his chest.

This has been one of my most anticipated reads this year. And the (relatively short) wait was worth it. This is such a hurt/comfort ride that I could not put this down.

Our boys Harlow and Foxx are slowly getting under my skin with their banter and treatment of feelings as if they were a disease.

Foxx. My baby, Foxx. I wanted to wrap him in a couple of blankets, give him a tin of cookies, and lock him in his sewing room.

Harlow is still a mystery to me. The title of the fourth book seems to hint that we will definitely find out about his habits. Nevertheless, here I loved his fretting, nerves, and anxiety over Foxx. And there is a striking development to the way Harlow treats Foxx (even considering the beginning of the book) and Foxx is just as baffled as Harlow is.

Harlow glanced down at Foxx, and got this strange hollow feeling in his chest. He wasn't sure what the fuck that meant, but he had worse sh*t to worry about than his head and body going more screwy than normal.

I loved the plot and cases. All had a purpose (either plot or character driven) and were hella entertaining. And I want more of Jerry. hehe

The spice was amazing. Wow. These two are so hot for each other. I cannot wait for their feelings to be much more involved. Hopefully in the next book. (fingers crossed)

I cannot wait for the Unusual Emotions to be released but also, I want the author to take their time so that the book is as amazing as it can be!

I received an advance review copy for free - thank you so much! - and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

“I read books too.”

“You do not! I have never once seen you read a book!”

Harlow slowly smirked. “Just yesterday I read a book called How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You.”

“I AM NOT A CAT!”

“Why? Are you plotting to kill me?” His smirk widened at the death glare sent his way.

“I wasn’t, but I’m happy to make your bloody delusions a reality!”

The Jumper of Friendship

****************************************

I 🫶🏾 Harlow and Foxx so hard. These two characters are such a dynamic duo. Their relationship is so cute and funny, and they give me all the warm feels with all of their interactions.

This book was torture to read, and I mean that in a positive way. The storylines were heart-rending - dealing with the healthcare system and how certain demographics fall through the cracks and get victimized. Like I said about the first book, you can substitute any underrepresented minority group within the story, and for those who may be represented by those groups, this story hits very close to home.

I felt frustrated and indignant reading certain scenes, and I was so glad that Foxx had Harlow to advocate for him throughout the story because people were acting really loony on so many levels, but it was so plausible, which made it worse.

This is a smartly written book, and the story continues to get better and better. I will definitely be reading the next two books in the series.

This book tickles my own antisocial personality disorder !!

First off, I love the implications that antisocial personality disorder runs on a spectrum - which it does. Foxx is a fruity little vampire that suffered from severe betrayal and heartbreak for many years. Alot of those experiences gives him this air of energy and happiness of freedom to do as he wishes without fear because he's learned to grow beyond that. He has a touch of antisocial personality disorder himself because of said trauma and the actions he felt was necessary to protect his safety. Our dear Harlow is more of a sociopath but not born, one possibly unconsciously made through his own tough life experiences, on top of the anti personality disorder which shows in him more as a 'could care less' & 'breathing bodies piss me off' type of guy. Both suffer from the same problems, different experiences, with different levels on a spectrum between the two. I love that! So what do you get by putting two guys that walk that personality disorder line, but on opposing ends? Obviously a bunch of knee slapping induendos, hilarious humor, and a made-sociopath finally learning what it means to feel empathy for someone else - the result can be a bit stabby but the reality is that this is genuinely what that feels like. I absolutely can't wait for the next book!

GET👏🏽THIS👏🏽AUTHOR👏🏽BETTER👏🏽EDITING👏🏽PLEASE👏🏽👏🏽

I absolutely love this author and their stories. This one is no different. Sadly, that means the editing is so nonexistent that it’s extremely difficult to read the book. It makes me have the angy feels. It’s not fair to the author, who 💵 for nothing apparently, and it’s not fair the audience, who just wants to be able to clearly understand what they’re reading.

Aside from being barely legible, the story is awesome. It’s chaotic and intense, messy and the characters are friggin’ unhinged, but I love it. It’s like this perfect storm of fluffy, s t a b b y, psychopaths-gone-wild fun. With spicy bits. Praise Jeffy Spaghetti.🙏🏽 🍝

3/5. Please. Please find a better editor. I am b e g g i n g you. I will happily continue to read, but I will not be happy about the struggle. I just want my HEA with a side of excellent mechanics🥺😩

IT IS LOVE!!!! Our cute Foxx finds himself in some compromising and life threatening situations when assigned to two seemingly unrelated cases. Harlow, our big hunk of violence, does his best not only to help Foxx cope with the trauma of the past and present, but to also cope with his melting heart (or the enlarging of his two sizes too small heart....Sorry for the Grinch reference, it is the holidays 😂). Taste of Fear is definitely better than the last book in the series. Shelby Rhodes really helps the reader relate to Harlow in this one. The anger I felt from Harlow's POV made me definitely want to jump into the story and help Harlow save Foxx. The next release is too far 😫 I need to read more!

This book is a must read! I highly recommend it for anyone who loves crime, comedy, suspense, and hot/steamy love/hate relationship duos.

Soft cliff hangers suck too!

Omfg what the heck?! Ok, so "soft cliff hangers" don't suck as bad as big ones but still! Just finished this and am considering going into a medically induced coma until the next book is released to end this suffering.

One word: amazing. Harlow and Foxx just keep getting better and better and ugh! Need more of them immediately. I enjoyed every single second of this, including the ones that made me cry. Shelby Rhodes is too good at writing emotional breakdowns and PTSD scenes because poor Foxx had me near sobbing a few times.

Story wise this was amazing, deep, complex and interesting. There's a lot going on but man the next book is going to be flipping astounding. Sexy and gory and hilarious, the chefs kiss trifecta.

Highly HIGHLY recommend this book, series, AND author. Do yourself a huge favor and buy it immediately!

Ok so I kinda got addicted to Foxx and Harlow in the first book, At First Irritation. After reading this book, yeah, I'm fully and totally in love and addicted to them. This book took me on a such an emotional rollercoaster ride, making me feel every emotion possible. My heart was put through the wringer, so many twist and turns, suspenseful moments that had me biting my nails, and then some not so nice moments making me cry and my heart ache. But those achy moments were then soothed with laughter, sweet moments with a dash of sarcasm (cause it's Foxx and Harlow), and oh my...those steamy moments 🔥🔥. This book had me in its grips from beginning to end, never a boring moment! And I can't wait to get my hands on the next book cause I think we'll get more insight to the mysterious Harlow.

Book two for Harlow and Foxx

WOW I loved this book even more than I thought I would. Harlow and Foxx are such unique characters and fit each other’s problems so well. I love the earth that Shelby Rhodes has conceived where it’s earth but paranormals are now known about. The situations, prejudices, allies and opponents that they have to deal with all combine to give us a very exciting tale. There is what they term a “soft” cliffhanger which seems to mean that the big plot points are wrapped up but there are further strings that need to be followed. I’m glad because I don’t want to give these characters up yet.

I can't tell you how much I love Foxx. I have a thing for vamps especially the way Ms Rhodes writes them.
Foxx and Harlow are getting back to work after their last hunt and this ends in Foxx being in hospital seriously injured from an impailment after a bomb explosion. The going on at the hospital makes for their next case where Foxx is kidnapped.
An action packed book with a lot of time seeing Foxx and Harlow at home and Foxx being his usual self.
Can't wait for the next book.

& by the way, if the author ever finds herself with a few hours spare perhaps she could consider writing a cross over with Octavius, my other favorite glittery vamp.

**ARC**You know how sometimes the second in a series loses something the first had? Perhaps the characters fall flat, the dialogue becomes redundant or the scenes may feel forced. This book does not have any of those issues. This story gives the characters more depth, the banter is witty and humorous, the scenes hold your attention with action and timely transitions. I would go so far as to say this book surpassed the first with the emotional rollercoaster I just went on. 100% recommend. LOVE IT!!!!!!!

This instalment has taken a much darker turn compared to the first book. We see their relationship growing and Harlow shocked at his reactions towards Foxx. There’s also different POVs from other secondary characters that I feel it was not really needed (like the other hunter telling his partner that he wanted to hook up with Foxx despite seeing him with Harlow).
The ending felt abrupt and it bothers me when it finishes in the middle of a scene (Harlow and Tony talking). Why not put in another page or two and at least finish the scene?

Foxx and Harlow

Foxx and Harlow are back at it again and of course find themselves immersed in danger because obviously they're trouble magnets.
Foxx is his usual sunshiney, murderous ball of fluff and Harlow is being grumpy and uncooperative.
The spicy, snarky banter between them is amazing and had me in stitches.
Foxx is in grievous danger and Harlow of course is not happy.
These relationship between them is slowly developing and both are extremely bewildered by it.
Matt Williams did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.

A MUST read... I have never enjoyed banter between two people as much as I enjoy it between Harlow and Foxx... There is so much fall in love with beyond the banter...

The world building becomes more and more detailed by the book... The character development is mind-blowing... The storyline is ridiculously entertaining... The relationship between Harlow and Foxx is unhinged and unique in every which way... They are lovers... But, not a couple yet... Which is crazy to be two books into a series and things not yet solidify between the MCs... YET, it works... Every part works... I adore Foxx's adorable way, dressing and his cat-like ways... Harlow entertains in a much different way... With his complete need for watch to quench his thirst and softening towards Foxx??? PRICELESS!!! You have to read this series to appreciate Shelby Rhodes' abilities in creating attention-grabbing scenes and engaging characters... Soooo... On that note... On to the next book...

It Keeps Getting Better and Better

I love Harlow and Foxx together. I enjoyed seeing Harlow try to figure out his emotions and how they relate to Foxx. Also, I'm glad Foxx has a protector in Harlow. This definitely took me on a rollercoaster of emotions and shenanigans, and I want more. I hope we get more Melody and Alistair in the next book. I think it would be hilarious to see Foxx and Harlow around children for a bit, and I think Alistair needs more on-page time.

Best book

I have read a lot of Shelby Rhodes books but this is by far my absolute favourite. Shelby's best book in my opinion. Sweet, cute, adorable Foxx goes through so much in this book and this wakes something up in Harlow. The story is excellent and I cannot wait for the next book in the series. I highly recommend. A definite five star read for me.

Taste of Fear

Foxx has more than a taste of fear in this book but proves how strong he can be all while Harlow, it seems, is learning what it's like to feel. Neither one admitting to or realising how they feel about each other. Can't wait to see where the next book takes their partnership & relationship.
