Hyperion Cantos #4.5

Huérfanos de la hélice

Rate this book

After reading this story set after the events of 'The Rise Of Endymion' it has again left me wanting more fiction set in the fecund Hyperion universe. This story is also contained in Dan's collection of 5 stories called, 'World's Enough And Time'.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this story with the excellent plot, prose and characters.
Dan Simmons made a comment about his Hyperion universe on his Facebook page a few days ago. He replied to a question from a fan and in his answer he stated that he WILL be returning to his Hyperion universe. He did not say when, but I for one hope it is soon!!

Well this was an interesting short story, albeit without any real importance compared to the massive scale of post- Hyperion universe. It pretty much just helped to remind me how awesome and imaginative Dan Simmons can be. It would be great if any time soon he gets bored of writing elaborated 19th century parallel history novels, and makes a triumphant return to his space opera works.

Before reading this novella set in the Hyperion Universe, I was unsure if Simmons would be able to maintain the high standard of story-telling that he set with the previous 4 novels. Simmons has again, not disappointed.

This has to be one of my favourite short stories/novellas that I have read. Every bit was enjoyable, and made me want to carry on and not put it down. One of the most surprising things was the amount of detail that has been put into this short piece of fiction, and makes it feel like I've read a novel.

There were constant references to the previous 4 books. Mostly The Rise of Endymion, which made the story much more enjoyable and made the ending of the story that much better.

I look forward to reading more Hyperion related stories when Dan Simmons returns to this world, which I hope is sooner than later. There is no doubt that this universe that Simmons has created is the best that I have been in, and I will definitely reread this series in the future.

My goodness, I'd forgotten how much I love this world created by Simmons.

This story, much like the other books in the series, does a time-jump. This one is the biggest of them all. But that doesn't keep you from thoroughly enjoying the tale to be told.

And if you're wondering about recurring characters, don't. The way that's handled here is masterfully done and well worth the read if you got through the other four novels.

Peccato.

I've got a terrible feeling, I've spoiled myself the ending to some of the Hyperion Cantos (which I need to finish one day...), but oh well. I'll probably forget it before I manage to read the entire series. Dan Simmons's imagination and setting take the front seat in this story as we get a glimpse of a number of different human and post-human civilizations. The problems the protagonists face are, unfortunately, all too easily solved which undermines some of the dilemmas they face. Still, I enjoyed it and it reminded me to give Hyperion a re-read.

Ok. Eh bien allez-y, n'attendez pas. Vraiment.

4.1. So fun to be back in the Hyperion-verse. Nice little short story carrying forth themes and story from the 4 books but also trying to cram so much into so few pages. Would have rated higher if the story had been given room to breathe across a whole novel. Regardless, loved it and love DS and Hyperion.

Dan Simmons.....rarely disappoints. Sometimes I wish he would.
Always glad to return to Hyperionverse....and always I have to leave fairly soon before I lose it. Some sad endings but since he writes excellent work I've gotten over it & gotten used to it.
Never mind me. Highly recommended to ALL Hyperion fans (I AM).
If you love James S.A. Corey's "Expanse" series, you'll definitely be ecstatic over the Hyperion Cantos & this follow up.
This 3 story novella gives you a glimpse of what went on After (Orphans), a revist to the Consul's tale from 'Hyperion' (Siri; still saddens me years after reading the first time) then a nostalgic fantasy tale wrapped up in a serious look at the struggle of education & educators in middle & rural America (Centaur).
Fun reading this short stories novella & hope to get to visit Hyperionverse again, someday...

"Orphans of the Helix" is a 46-page science fiction short story by American writer Dan Simmons, set in his Hyperion Cantos fictional universe (one of three, the others being "Remembering Siri", a story which is also a chapter of Hyperion, and "The Death of a Centaur", which deals with an early and allegorical version of either The Fall of Hyperion).

A nice return to the universe of Hyperion several hundred years later after the end of Rise of Endymion and learn what came of the various societies and heroes Short and sweet with a tiny twist at the end left me wanting more-- and to return to this world again.

I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars.

The story in the future of the Hyperion universe is excellent, but the other story is a complete bore. Only a literature teacher could think a bunch of Shakespeare actors in space would be a basis for a story. But I understand why it was put into the same story collection as the Orphans of the Helix - there's space and aliens.

But reading Helix really reminded me the great spaceopera that Hyperion tetralogy was. It's breadth and depth, scale and philosophy. Really need to read it again, now with 15 years of additional understanding.

It was nice to read a story set in the Hyperion universe without massive conflict. This was much more like a Star Trek episode about first contact, which isn't surprising since it was born out of a pitch for a ST Voyager episode. It's set far from the nexus of human/AI activity in the former Web worlds so it only gives a kind of glimpse of what life must be like there after the events of the Cantos, but it's enough to satiate a little curiosity. It's a portrait of a future that I'd want to live in, and that makes me very happy after reading the second duology of the Cantos.

A light, quick little read that provides an interesting short story, but also at the very end a little bit of closure - perhaps ominously hinting towards micromanagement, like certain other prior interstellar powers - to the series. The story is tight and compact to the point of being spartan. After reading all four of the prior books, having Hawking space spin-ups and translations described in less than two sentences feels downright odd. But Simmons is moving the story ahead at breakneck pace, and it works well to tell the story he wants to tell. All too soon, it was over, and now I need to find a new series to read.

"Heeliksi orvud" lugu suutis ka mulle meeldetuletada autori eepilist Hyperioni sarja, samas aga jäi lühiloos sügavust ikkagi puudu ja pigem oli tegu sellise hea prelüüdiga kogu sarja juurde.
Teise loo, "Tulemuusa" puhul mind ausalt häiris see suur Shakespeari-kesksus.

Great short story to update you on what’s happening in the Hyperion Universe a few hundred years after Aenea. The bulk of the story makes an impression that the Aenean Movement isn’t all you would have hoped at the end of “The Rise of Endymion” but in a small twist that is super-reminiscent of Asimov’s “Foundation” stories, the end indicates that there’s a lot going on behind the scenes and that the optimism of the Aenean Movement is advancing for the benefit of all, even those who don’t want to participate.

I think I would love any story in this setting. I finished Rise of Endymion a few days prior and really felt like I needed a little more of the universe before I could move away from the Cantos and this scratched that itch for me. It's an appropriate length, but I do wish it was a little longer and the main conflict wasn't resolved so quickly - but it's a very 'feel's good' story to give you a little bit more of the universe of the Cantos.

It's a nice way to wrap up all the books, and showing the after effects of the shared moment and how Aeneans have come to be. The narrative is mostly a fight against a large planetoid machine consuming a biosphere, and select members of the Spectrum Amoiete people are woken up to investigate the SOS signal coming from said tree ring, and debate on whether to risk everything to help these far flung ousters and templars.

I'm glad that of all the factions and things in the Hyperion Cantos universe, we get a short story about the Helix people. I found them interesting and intriguing before and this story just gives a deeper look into their lives. And I definitely dont mind the fan-service at the end. In fact I cherish it.
