Strength and how to obtain it

Rate this book
Eugen Sandow, legendary strongman reveals his secrets. Part 1 of this classic book is packed with exercise advice. Part 2 is an autobiographical account of his many meetings with other famous strongmen, his feats of strength, and escapades such as fighting (and beating) a fully grown lion. The reader could be forgiven for thinking some of these are tall tales but they took place in public and were well witnessed and documented. The book is a must read for anyone interested in physical culture, bodybuilding, strength training and health. Sometimes the old methods are the Sandow achieved his amazing results with a few dumbbells, well before the advent of well equipped gymns and weight machines. Get back to basics with a legendary strongman.

This book is not a five star book if you are looking for an explanation of exercises and techniques to obtain strength.
Notably because it does not exactly detail how to obtain strength to us reading 120 years in the future. It certainly documents many great examples of strength, but how to obtain it is simply put as "join Sandow's school of physical culture".
This on its own would lead me to feel deceived, but the book was written in 1897, when Eugen Sandow's school of physical culture was very much active, so to say simply 'join and obtain strength' makes the title more reasonable in that respect.
Eugen Sandow does not document much about his training movement, but also explains how his extraordinary feats of strength are training enough in their own sense. The five star review comes with the description of Sandow's fight against the full grown lion, which weighed 530 pounds. It was incredibly exciting to read.
Besides this experience, the most redeeming aspect of the book is how genuine and caring Eugen Sandow was toward his fellows. A very powerful man.
