My review for: Patagonia: City of Ghosts by Rue Volley & Madison Daniel
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Shanna Roberson

Forgive me…I need a moment to gather myself. Before I start this review, let me say I am a hardcore Sci-Fi geek. From shows like Battlestar Galactica to books like Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Patagonia is right up there with the best of them.

Imagine living your life in an endless hellish world and fighting to survive every day just to wake up the next day and do it all again. This what Paige lives with every day since the Invaders’ took over earth. In just seven days, the world had changed and nothing would ever be the same.

Until a conformation with other rogues and enters Fin. A beautiful boy that was untouched by the unrelenting sun and dirt. With him, nothing will ever be the same again. With him, Paige realizes that her world is not what it seems.

I am in awe by the amazing chemistry between Rue Volley and Madison Daniel. Each author on their own are phenomenal artists but together, they are pure fire and nothing short of extraordinary.

From page one, I was pulled into this dystopia unlike any other. With a jaw-dropping ending that left me breathless, Patagonia is easily my new favorite Sci-Fi series and I can’t wait for the next installment. Amazing read.

I was given an ARC e-copy of this installment by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank You Rue!!

OMG! Rue Volley is an amazing author in her own rights, adding Madison Daniel's unique and lyrical writing style to the mix just works smoothly together--like a well oiled machine. Excellent you two are An Amazing Duo. MORE PLEASE?!!?

Paige is a girl who has been robbed of everything in her life--forced to fight to survive, she is a strong, kick-ass character. Enter in Fin, her world gets refocused and things are going to get rough if their plans succeed.

The world is vivid and bright, yet, dark and desolate at the same time. Consistent world building, just when I think I am at that Ah-Ha moment... here comes a twist or a turn that blows me away. Emotions run on high at times as the characters are challenged... cannot wait for more... I have to know Paige's reaction.... Bring it On! I Loved this installment.

I would recommend this for the mature readers out there 18 or older... due to the graphic nature of this read.

I really hate books that don't just work for me. This was one of those books.

Just everything about it I struggled with. I think I was confused, angry, frustrated, and every other word you can imagine while reading a book you had such high hopes for and they were dashed all over the place.

I'm gonna says that the story line was different. However, I felt like it was a mix of Oblivion and The Host. Literally as a read I kept thinking of those two stories.

Here are my issues: The world building was very slim to non-existent. I mean I literally couldn't latch onto or believe the dystopian/sci-fi world the authors had tried to create. You have to believe it to live in it and I couldn't believe in this world. You don't get any real answers as to why there is no more night. They say once, "Did the Earth stop rotating?" Well--did it. Generally, you would know that people would have a hard time living if that was the case. Time would stop--literally.

The first person language in the first half the story was very repetitive. The monologue kept saying, "As I, as I walked as I talked as I lived as I breathed." I yanked me out of the story so much that I started to high light every time it was said after 4%. I feel like the editing process left out the proof reading stage. There were a lot of extra words. You could have yanked a lot of was, then, has. Shortened the paragraphs. The characters didn't talk in any believable way. They kept using 'Do not' instead of 'don't' when they would talk. People just don't talk like that. Our world is built on slang in pretty much every culture. I kept grunting each time it happened almost like they were trying to not be repetitive--yet they failed with the as I repetition. The storytelling was almost juvenile in the way it was presented, chunky, and lacked flow.

Once the story hit about 27% it seemed like the authors latched onto what they were trying to do and the story got better, but I still was left with this bulky storytelling voice and where I normally eat up anything sci-fi related I just wanted to punch the book. The story then tried to toss in a love story that was so under developed I didn't even care about that, I tried to keep focusing on the war they were building up. Then I ended up not really caring about that.

Basically, this story just didn't work for me. I don't know if it was the voice--but I just felt confused by the time I got to the end. I didn't know who was fighting who, and I honestly didn't care by the last page. It said to be continued and there was no urge to know what happened. I think if the story does continue it needs really strong beta readers that will break it apart and help put it all back together. Sci-fi needs to flow. If you confuse the reader, you lost the reader.

I'm sure there is a target audience for this book. I thought it would be me, I'm a sucker for world invasion/sci-fi/kinda dystopian storylines. This was just felt like a hot mess to be honest.

When two of my favorite authors united to create this book, I couldn’t pass the opportunity up to purchase it. Talk about a book that will leave you on the edge of your seat for the next part of the series, this is it!!!!
When the world as you know it as is invaded by an outside world, you do the best you can with what you have to survive and that is what Paige and Porter are trying to do. But on one of their runs for water that is being dropped near them, they both are picked up and they find another world, Patagonia, The City of Ghosts. When she awakens, she meets Fin, someone that the connection to is intense but somewhat forbidden. He needs everyone that he has brought there, their abilities to win the war they need to endure to save what’s left. But can Fin and Paige hold out for the passion they have for each other in order to accomplish the mission that is before them?

It's not bad, but I honestly don't get it. It's going entirely too fast and no answers what so ever. I don't understand how all the oceans could have just dried up in under 5 years or how the earth apparently stopped rotating so there isn't night, just day all the time, but you can still see the moon. Not to mention Patagonia itself and the kids who live there. Where did it all come from? Why them? How does it all work, and where exactly is it? I was left floundering the whole time. There was nothing that made it stick enough for me to be able to believe this world that Volley has created.

If this was longer and had some explanations in terms of the world-building, it would be 100x better.

I honestly had my hopes set so high for this book. Don't get me wrong I am glad I read it, I just wish it wasn't so fast. The authors rushed the story and didn't explain what was happening. Will I read the next in the series, yes.

*sigh*
Got to around half way and gave up.
I could not get into this at all.
I found it very disjointed and it didn't read easily.
The protagonist also annoyed me.
I did like the premise though.

How two authors mesh their creative minds together to create an intense filled story, I will never know. However, Madison Daniel and Rue Volley comes thru with an original sci-fi dystopia story that will put your brain in overload.

Paige has learned to be a fighter…the world is in chaos. You have to learn how to fight to survive, or die trying. This story isn’t even close to what you expect. Another Sci-fi, another Dystopia, yabba dabba do…in my opinion, I can’t get enough. HOWEVER, this story takes a direction you least expect. My only disappointment is that it wasn’t long enough, because a creative imagination by two authors that conceive a story like this should never end….but…and here’s the but, I know there will be MORE so that makes me incredibly happy. It’s fast paced, dark, unexpected, twists and turns galore. It makes me want to pull out the thesaurus so I can come up with some original words to describe this unique, eccentric, original, exceptional, unconventional story. (there, the Thesaurus is out)

It’s one of those reads that definitely takes you to another world, where you can lose yourself and just not think. Thanks Mad Dan and Rue, I look forward to the next installment, which, I hope is soon. Get a Crackin!!

So, I bought this book because it is written by two of the many favorite authors I have, and I do what I can to support them.I also have never been disappointed by anything written by Rue Volley or Madison Daniel!
I'm usually a Vampire,Witch,Werewolves, things that go bump in the night kind of reader, but let me tell you,I am now a Sci-Fi reader also!!!!!

I don't go into details when I review, because I feel everyone should open a new book with no preconceived ideas or someone elses thoughts on the story in their minds...it should be a fresh exciting revelation with each turn of the page.
That being said,I will say this... READ THIS BOOK!!!! Rue Volley and Madison Daniel have done it again. The characters are well written and likeable and the world the plot takes place in,mysterious, scary, beautiful and dangerous.I look forward to the continuation in book 2!. Finding out the secrets and getting some answers to all the questions about some of the characters that I have rolling around in my head.

Well done,well done!!

But I have a question for Rue and Madison...How could you leave me like this!!!! I will go crazy waiting for the next book!! That's how much I loved it!!

Wonderful novel by two authors!, June 4, 2013

This review is from: Patagonia: Light and Shadows (City of Ghosts) (Kindle Edition)
I do not usually read Sci-Fi, but I am very glad I decided to buy this book! Wow! Such an accomplishment, two different writers creating a smooth flowing story!

The concept and the twists and turns are amazing. I was drawn in immediately and could relate to all the characters! Everything seemed to be real. The scenes were described so well, I saw them in my mind. Every character has depth!

A must read book!!!

Can't wait to see how they continue this remarkable series!!!

Kudos to both!

I had a little trouble with understanding this story in the beginning, but when I got further into it, I was hooked. You can’t tell that it’s written by two different authors, it is brilliant made.

The story was different, the twist when delivered made me gaping at the book, because I did NOT see that one coming. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, and I want to know what happens next. Definitely going to keep my eyes out for the sequel. In the meantime, I can use Rue Volley’s re-released Blood and Light Series to tie me over ;-)

I'm not sure I really liked this book. That is in no way a reflection of the authors. I just didn't realize it was sci-fi in the whole alien sense until I had already purchased and read it. I'm not a fan of aliens. I will refrain from an actual review for this reason.
