My husband gave me this study Bible for Christmas last year, and I have been reading it all year with a “read the Bible in a year challenge” from the Filament app (which syncs to this Bible). I didn’t use these features in the app, but it will also read the Bible aloud to you and has imagery in things you can look at.
As the title implies, this Bible is meant for women, and it is particularly well suited for women who are new to Christianity. It is edited entirely by women scholars and features contributions from them, as well as women ministers and lay people. So, if that is something you care about, it is an all women production.
The Bible has several helpful features that get into the tough questions and issues that most modern women have when learning about Christianity. It also has these short narrative stories that put you in the perspective of women from the Bible, and it is full of tips and practical applications for everyday life.
The middle of the Bible has this whole section on finding your purpose in life, which was interesting. Not sure you can really get your whole purpose in life from something like that.
The NLT is definitely accessible and makes things easier to understand in plain language, but it lacks the poetic nature of some other English translations.
Each chapter begins with a really helpful summary, giving the historical/Biblical context and letting you know how long it will take to read. There are also lots of maps and things like that in the back of the book if that is something you like to look at. The footnotes are also pretty detailed and help clarify things in the main text and point out when the translation has shortcomings.
In short, I would definitely recommend this to any women who are new to Christianity and want to read the Bible.
This review is NOT on the NLT translation or the Bible itself but specifically on the features of this Bible.
I appreciated that the contributors to the devotional thoughts (Image, Come Close, Perspective, Identity) had a short bio at the front of the Bible to let you know a little more about them. I did not appreciate that this bio was also in every single devotional thought as well. The name being there is great but if I want to look at the bio, I can flip to the front of my Bible. I found the bios scattered throughout the Bible to be distracting to me from the thoughts or the Word.
There was an extra study part called "What the Bible Says About:" I found this redundant. It feels like cheating because we can discover that for ourselves but it also would not be as frustrating to me if it was only ever a one page spread instead of taking up two pages through most of the Bible. This interrupts the flow of reading through Scripture as you must turn an extra page before finishing the thought.
The Identity pages were nice sometimes to try and get into the head of certain people in the Bible. In other places, it seemed and felt very wrong. Probably something I would not include or would only include certain people.
Mistakes: I found at least two typos in study notes. On page 301 - Come Close. Gideon is hiding food. Not himself. There were several other notes that I felt were taking personal liberties and not what Scripture actually says.
Much of the study notes also did not go as deep as I would like.
I knew this was red letter and I really have a hard time reading red letter but heard it wasn't as harsh of a red. I still did not appreciate the red. It would be nice to have a black letter version or choose another color to be "red letter."
What I really enjoyed:
The graphics and insight portions were very well done. In addition to that, the filament enabled app was also really cool to have.
It was nice to not just have flowers and an older woman kind of look like most women's Bibles I've seen. That being said, some of the pictures seemed to be strange choices even for a women's Bible.
The binding was nice. I've used this Bible and read through it for about 14 months. There is very little wear on my cover except for one letter losing it's gold foil on the spine. It feels nice to hold and somehow doesn't have any scratches.
Having two ribbons is also great. All Bibles should have more than one ribbon, in my opinion.
Overall, I probably wouldn't heartily recommend this Bible. It seems like much of the study notes were for women who really felt attacked by the Bible. I can empathize with that thought but sometimes it felt as if the contributors were trying too hard to protect what didn't need protecting. I will keep this Bible because I've made several notes in it and there are several notes that I really enjoyed. However, with my concern of some of the notes, I probably won't recommend it unless I know someone who is really struggling with specific things.
