Banaful/Banaphool (Bengali: বনফুল) (literally meaning The Wild Flower in Bengali) is the pen name of the Bengali author, playwright and poet, Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay (Bengali: বলাইচাঁদ মুখোপাধ্যায়).

He was born in Manihari village of Purnia district (now Katihar District), Bihar on 19 July 1899. He was the son of Satyacharan Mukhopadhyay, a practicing physician at the village and Mrinalini Devi. He was admitted to the Sahebgunge Railway school in the year 1914. Mukhopādhyāy started a hand-written magazine named "Bikash" where his writings of the first few days were published. When one of his poem was published in a well- known magazine named Malancha, he was warned by the then head-master of the school as he feared that Balāi Chānd's literary work may spoil his education. So, Balāi adopted his pen name Banaful (the wild flower in Bengali) to hide his work from his tutor. He passed Matriculation examination in 1918 and completed his study at Hazaribag College. Then he was admitted in the Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. During this time, he was married to Lilavati, who was studying I.A. at Bethune College, Calcutta. But before completing his medical education in Calcutta, he was transferred to Patna Medical College and Hospital due to an issued Government order. Here he was emoployed as a physician after completion of his medical education. Then he worked as a physician at Azimgaunge Hospital. He practiced Pathology at Bhagalpur. In 1968, he sold his house at Bhagalpur and settled at Salt Lake, Calcutta. This great writer took his last breath on 9 February 1979.

‘ডানা’ বনফুলের এক দীর্ঘ উপন্যাস। এই উপন্যাস প্রথমে তিন খণ্ডে প্রকাশিত হয়ে পরবর্তীতে অখণ্ড আকারে প্রকাশিত হয়। ‘ডানা’ উপন্যাসের বিষয়বস্তু বেশ জটিল, সহজ কোনো সমীকরণে এই উপন্যাস উপস্থাপন করা সম্ভব নয়।

‘ডানা’ উপন্যাসের মূল চরিত্র ডানা, বার্মা রিফিউজি। আর আছে ডানাকে ঘিরে তিন প্রধান চরিত্র—অমরেশ সেনগুপ্ত, আনন্দমোহন আর রূপচাঁদ মৌলিক। অমরেশ জমিদার ও পক্ষীতত্ত্ববিদ, আনন্দমোহন প্রাক্তন শিক্ষক ও কবি আর রূপচাঁদ পুলিশ অফিসারের বড়বাবু—তিন বন্ধু। এই তিন বন্ধুর কাছে আশ্রয় পায় বার্মার রিফিউজি ‘ডানা’, আর এই তিন জনের তিন ধরণের মনঃতত্ত্ব আর ডানার প্রতি তাদের অনুরাগ নিয়েই এই উপন্যাস।

উপন্যাসের একটা বড় অংশ জুড়ে আছে পক্ষীতত্ত্ববিদ অমরেশবাবুর বর্ণনা। বিভিন্ন পাখি নিয়ে বিভিন্ন বর্ণনা, জীববিজ্ঞানে যা ট্যাক্সোনমির ভেতর পড়ে। এই অংশ আমার কাছে চরম বিরক্তিকর লেগেছে। এমন না যে আমি পাখি পছন্দ করি না, তবে পাখি পছন্দ করা এক জিনিস আর কোন পাখি কী খায়, কার ডিম কেমন, কার পালক আর বর্ণ কেমন—এইসব তাত্ত্বিক বিষয় আমার পছন্দ হয়নি। উপন্যাসের প্রথম খণ্ডে এই বিষয়েই বেশি বলা হয়েছে। আমার মনে হয় বনফুল বাবু হয়তো কিছুদিন শখ করে পাখি নিয়ে পড়াশোনা করেছিলেন, সেই সব তথ্য-উপাত্ত তিনি উপন্যাসে জুড়ে দিয়েছেন।

উপন্যাসের আরেকটা অংশে আছে কবিতা… কবি আনন্দমোহন কবিতা লেখেন। পাখি দেখলেই কবিতা লেখেন। কবিতার পর কবিতা, আরও কবিতা, আরও কবিতা… আমি পড়ার সময় বেশিরভাগ কবিতা স্কিপ দিয়েছি। তবে ডানাকে নিয়ে লেখা কবিতাগুলো পড়েছি, ভালো ছিল। আর, রূপচাঁদ মৌলিক—সবচেয়ে জটিল চরিত্র, যে ডানাকে প্রিয়সী রূপে পেতে চায়।

নতুন উপন্যাস এই চার চরিত্রের মাঝে সীমাবদ্ধ না থেকে আরও জটিল হয়েছে আনন্দমোহন, রূপচাঁদ আর অমরেশবাবুর স্ত্রীদের উপস্থিতিতে। আর শেষের দিকে কিছুটা রহস্যময় অথচ স্পষ্ট চরিত্র—সন্ন্যাসী তথা শ্রীবিশ্বপতি ভট্টাচার্যের উপস্থিতি এক নতুন দিক উন্মোচন করে, সেই দিকেই উপন্যাসের পরিসমাপ্তি করেছেন।

আমার কাছে মূল উপন্যাস খুবই ভালো লেগেছে। শেষের দিকে এসে পরিসমাপ্তি কিছুটা আঁচ করতে পেরেছিলাম বটে, তবে তা পাখিতত্ত্ববিদের বর্ণনা আর কবির কবিতা বাদ দিয়ে।

অরনিথোলজিস্ট বনফুল। এই সম্পর্কে ধারণা ভুবন সোমেও পাওয়া যায়। এখানে খুবই বিস্তারিত। পাখি প্রেমিকদের আকর গ্রন্থ। কেন যে বনফুল প্রচলিত নেই এখন বুঝলাম না।
