Ai Yazawa (Japanese: 矢沢あい, Yazawa Ai) is a Japanese manga author and illustrator. Her pen name comes from singer Eikichi Yazawa, of whom she is a fan. Yazawa started her comics career in 1985. She specialises in shojo manga (girls' comics). Most of her works have been serialised in the magazines 'Ribon', 'Cookie' and 'Zipper'. Yazawa's stories focus on young, often rebellious women and their relationships. The characters are always very stylish, and Yazawa herself is known for her sense of fashion. (She even attended a fashion school for some time after high school.) Among her most famous manga are Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (I'm No Angel, 1992–1995), Neighborhood Story (1995-1998), Paradise Kiss (1999-2004), and Nana (2000-2009), the latter awarded a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2003. Some of these works have been adapted into anime and live action movies.
I found this beautiful art book at Animecon 2015, and I am delighted that I found it. I really love the NANA series (anime/manga) and I am still hoping that Ai Yazawa will continue with the series one day again.
The book shows all the characters we know from the series. Starting with Black Stones and ending with both of the Nana's together. It was beautiful to see all the characters again, though some of the images broke my heart, knowing what happened in the manga, they are so wonderful together and I am still hurt that the mangaka did that to them. :( I loved seeing the bands again, the couples were cute, it was hilarious though how for Nana or as they also call her, Hachi, they had a whole slew of guys, while the other Nana only had Ren.
The illustrations are either a 2 pages spread or various smaller ones on 2 pages. All of them are in colour and the artstyle switches quite a lot, but it is still all Yazawa's artstyle. And artstyle that I loved when I started reading Paradise Kiss, and a love that never left me. Some artists just have a certain style that makes you want to see more of it. I found quite a few favourites in this art book, so I will be sure to check it out more often, until we at least get new Nana or a new series by the mangaka.
The art book is also easily accessible, sometimes art books have written text, but this one is 99% pictures, with only near the back where all the pictures are listed in tiny print you will find a Japanese explanation for the images. The message by the artist is found in English and Japanese, so you can easily read that one.
The art book comes in a pretty cardboard slipcase, so your book will be protected. I also love the text on it, not only does it give protection it looks really pretty!
All in all, this is one art book I would highly recommend. Are you a fan of NANA? Then this is the perfect art book for you!
A must have if you love Ai Yazawa, her drawing style is fantastic. The book is diveded into chapters: Black Stones, Nana, Hachi, Trapnest, Couples, Junko's Room SP, Nana and Hachi. It's a good collection of pictures, and my edition included a sticker and a Black Stones panflet. My only complain is that after waiting for so long to have it (it was very hard to get until it was published in Spanish just now), i was expecting to see some brand new illustrations i had never seen. Most of these have been circling the internet forever, since they appeared on Cookie and other magazines before being compiled here. Still, i'm very happy i got this, as an Ai Yazawa fan it's great to have such a collection of her art in colour to look at!
I discovered Ai Yazawa's work last year but didn't get into her mangas until now, and I regret not reading her the second I found her. It's sad that she said she doesn't draw well, when she has one of the most beautiful styles I've ever seen. Her characters are just amazingly designed, the fashion mostly, but seriously, she's one of the best mangakas I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying their art. Totally recommended checking this incredible artbook to see some illustrations from Nana, it doesn't matter if you're a fan, just enjoy art.
I really like Ai Yazawa's drawing style, althought she says in the book that she doesn't feel so confident about her drawing abilities. It's been a long time since I read Nana, and I miss that. The illustrations from this book are beautiful. It doesn't have texts, so don't expect explanations about the arts, how they are created and inspired by.

Beautiful illustrations and format, I adore Nana and I adore Ai Yazawa's artwork. I do wish the book was bigger in scale so I could appreciate the artwork even more, hence the 4.5 instead of 5.
