Just before Stephen died, he left a note.
And the note read: Don’t let them get my children.

Itzel Loveguard has a secret. The stories she can’t seem to stop writing...sometimes they come true. And now she thinks she may have killed her own father.

But she’s not the only one. Her estranged half-brother Oz and his unfailingly charming friend Seth can do things too. And so can the handsome grey-eyed boy, who seems to have stepped right out of Itzy’s dreams and has been travelling to London in search of the mysterious black pulse.

Suddenly, Itzy is flung on an emotional journey as she struggles to come to terms with her traumatic past – and it leads her into a strange new world of magic and mythology.

Now she finds herself questioning everything she’s ever believed...and wondering who her father thought was coming for her.

An Alternate World that Will Bend Your Mind

I'm not particularly a fan of YA fiction, and I usually trudge through them, but Vrinda Pendred's 'Mythos' (`The Descendants' Book 1) is totally different from any others I've read in this genre. The characters are deep, the descriptions are stunning, and (best of all) the plot genuinely intriguing.

In 'Mythos' we meet main characters Itzy, Seth, Oz, Aidan, )(along with many others) and witness their journey from the supposedly `normal' world into a bendable universe of magic, mystery and mayhem. And while terrifying and confusing for them at first, this tantalising world or possibilities gradually becomes more real than what they had ever known before.

But don't be tempted to think that this is just another paranormal teenage romance--it's most assuredly not. Mythos contains plenty of foreshadowing and clues to where this plot is likely to take us, and you can already tell this series is going to be much deeper and more intricate than most in its genre.

'Mythos' sets the stage for what promises to become a major paranormal series that rivals blockbuster hits like the Stephenie Meyer's 'Twilight' books or Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials'. While sure to be a real pleaser for the Gen Y and millennial generations, I imagine many Gen Xers and Baby-boomers (like myself) will also enjoy 'The Descendents' series, because it addresses the one thing every human being has sought since the beginning of time--the Wisdom.

What is the Wisdom? Guess we just have to buckle our seatbelts and find out as author Vrinda Pendred masterfully unfolds the answer to that question throughout the series, like a flower opening, one petal at a time.

I've heard through the grapevine that the author is writing 5 books in 'The Descendants' series. I'm going to watch with the eyes of an eagle for Book 2 to come out.

Incredibly original, Mythos by Vrinda Pendred, tells about the descendants of a group of aliens who came to earth and mated with humans hundreds of years ago. These descendants have passed as humans for years with no distinguishing features or marks but, for some unknown reason, the current teenage descendants have begun to possess unusual extraordinary powers. Each of them have their own unique ability but no one knows why and, when one of their fathers dies, a cryptic message is left, 'Don't let them get my children.'

Mystery, romance, adventure and humor, all combine to offer an intriguing beginning to a new Young Adult series written by an amazingly talented author.

I was given this ebook as an ARR in order to give an unbiased review.

I found this book to be very interesting. It was very well written, and the storyline was great. The characters were good itzy was a likable girl with just enough mystery surrounding her to make you crave answers. Definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

I liked this book a lot. First of all, most of the characters are all very vivid and unique, from their speaking patterns to their preferred ways of approaching problems. By the end of the novel, I had formed some pretty significant emotional attachments to some of them, even having a strong reaction to the quasi-romantic triangle (I’m Team Seth all the way). This is rather inevitable, given the book is much more about emotional journeys and character development than the bits of action dragging us along.

The plotline, while containing enough common elements to make it safe and understandable, also has some fresh elements. In short, after the death of her abusive father, 17-year-old Itzel Loveguard stumbles across her older brother and his friend performing seeming magic tricks. When they tell her they have powers, she reveals she, too, has been hiding her own abilities to write realities into being. Thus begins a journey into discovering their common heritage as well as mastery of their newfound powers. Given the creepy verbiage from their father’s suicide note (“Don’t let them get my children”) and Itzy’s dreams of something big and bad coming, they seem to have a deadline. Along the way, Itzy discovers, and of course falls for, a young man with amazing, cataclysmic powers.

I love this author’s voice. She approaches tired topics and descriptions from such fresh angles. I remember really liking something she said about Itzy, the main character’s, alcoholic mother: something about how she’d fractured many years ago and the alcohol was the glue keeping her from shattering. She also has a lovely way with metaphors and slips rather seamlessly from awkward teenage conversations to lush descriptions.

This is not to say the novel is perfect. It includes some plot inconsistencies that seem awkwardly contrived to give the story a more traditional flow. For example, in spite of earlier celebrations of Itzy’s “overnight” mastery of her powers, when she’s kidnapped by a jealous girlfriend (a two-dimensional character ripped straight from a stock library of female-characters-we-need-to-hate), she waits helplessly until her friends and ultimately her new boyfriend can Come to Her Rescue™. Itzy, whose powers are lauded as potentially the greatest of them all, spends her captive time forgiving the jealous ex. Yeah.

Also, the action scenes are often a bit jumbled and somewhat confusing. The author writes descriptions so beautifully and delves with such incision into the inner workings of her characters; it makes me wonder if she doesn’t find the action scenes necessary evils in her character play.

Last of all, I know some people don’t mind it, but I have a difficult time dealing with head hopping. While Itzy is our usual narrator, some scenes hop from one POV to another. Also within scenes, the descriptions move from deep POV (we’re inside a character’s head, looking out through her eyes) to third person. It’s hugely distracting, at least for me.

In spite of the drawbacks, this is a riveting read. I strongly urge readers to buy it and prepare to become emotionally entangled with Itzy and her crew.

So here I am- sitting and after finishing six books in as many days and I still have another day or two to go on my trip back home I end up scrolling through my kindle and remember this one. So I open it up and I’m hooked. The first sentence is, “The grey-eyed boy flew down the M6 at unnatural speeds.” I mean, who can resist that? I know I can’t! So I read, and read, and read, until 5 hours later I am throwing my iPhone across the car in frustration because the book is missing and ending and I have no idea when #2 is coming out.

Vrinda Pendred had managed to ensnare me into this world of abilities and magic. I recently put away a book filled with all new mythologies and fantasy worlds because it was too confusing., and I liked my current views on the magical realm of fiction. But The Descendants managed to pull me into yet another world that I have gladly added to my collection of fantasy universes.

Itzel Loveguard- Itzy- is the heroine. Scratch that. She is the amazing heroine. Itzy has successfully placed herself on my favorite female list. She is strong and powerful, being a descendant of a powerful race with magical abilities will do that to a person. She has common sense (inner squee), and she is brave, which she has to be to deal with psycho ex-girlfriends and evil family members. She had a tendency to be a little too trusting but it hasn’t come to bite her in the butt, yet. She has had a bad and relatively lonely childhood but she doesn’t let that slow her down in any way. If anything it helps here put the bad things that happen behind her and she can keep moving forward.

Ethan is so freaking marvelous you cannot keep from loving him. And if you can then you are obviously not human (or female). I have been waiting for a good romance and I have found it! But more to the point; Ethan is special. He is more powerful than anyone can fathom, he is controlled, and smart. He has amazing powers that makes the Avengers look like childs play. He is passionate, decisive, and he is thoughtful. He hasn’t had the best childhood but all that time alone allowed him to master his powers and shaped him into the leader he is today. Ethan also has a vulnerable side. There are moments in the book when he shows a different side of him that makes him more relatable and that much better.

The book follows quite a few people, Itzy, Osiris, Seth, Vendri, Ethan, and Melody and if you are paying attention the jumping around POVs aren’t hard to follow. This book and series is filled with mysteries and questions that leave you chomping at the bit for more. There isn’t too much going on at once which is nice because the question that I’m stuck with are large enough by themselves. So much greatness in so little time leaves me with only one question left to ask, “How much longer must we wait in agony until the second book comes out?”

*I received this book from the author via Lovers of Paranormal in exchange for an honest review*

This is definitely one of the more unique of the common themed science fiction books. A group of teenagers find out that they are descendants of an alien race. They found out that they have special powers. These teenagers are the first generation with the powers. Each Descendant's power is different, no two are even remotely similar.
The author is obviously British and written as such. So American readers may get a little twitchy thinking certain words are spelled wrong when they are not. I did find a handful of actual errors, a missing word here and there, sprinkled through out the story, usually when in high "stress" scene. None of these minor errors wil impede the reader. One thing the story could have used were scene breakers. There are none in this book and when it jumps scenes during a book the reader may get a little disoriented until they realize it's a different scene.
I really like how Vrinda wrote the dialogue for the characters. The English characters do say "yeah?" a lot but from what I know people in England really do say that the end of a lot of their sentences. Even Aidan's Irish lilt was unmistakeable. There was no way to picture the character's voices as anything but what they were. I also enjoyed the time Vrinda took in detailing each of the main characters, hell even the minor characters like Myra and Stephen the reader gets a feel for so when comparisons are made between the Loveguard children and their father, the reader understands it. They were brought to life wonderfully.
All in all I really enjoyed this book even though it took me a lot longer than normal to read it for some reason, and look forward to reading Second Coming which is book 2 of this series.
I give this book 4 of 5 paws

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion*

Oddly, I ended up liking the characters more than the plot. I kept reading because I didn't want to say goodbye to Itzy and Seth and Oz (and I'm not leaving anyone out because of spoilers.. those are really the only ones I'm attached to).

I think this book may have suffered from set-up-opathy (yeah, made that up). As in, the author intends so much more of her writing time/space in the future for plot so she spent the time now in developing the characters and trying to find a way to start the story. The only problem with that is now I'm not particularly interested in the story at all. I can't really explain much without giving it away, so I'll just say that Itzy's writing ability has actual supernatural powers and a family tragedy propels her into a situation in which she discovers the nature of that power and how to use it.

I'm disappointed in a few different aspects. I don't feel like Itzy's developmental stages of her power were handled very well. I was really really happy with that beginning scene with in her bedroom where he taught her to channel her power not only for obvious reasons, but because it was the beginning of a molding and shaping process that would be necessary for Itzy to be of any use later on. Instead, that just kind of disappeared and Itzy could kind of replicate it later but kind of not?

I wanted some sort of closure on Myra's situation... especially after And I needed a little less rambling. Maybe it was my opinion and my preference of writing style, but I felt like (especially in the beginning) the writing rambled on and on and sometimes changed topics/scenes quickly and abruptly. Also, like I read someone else mention, I was distracted by the POV changes.

So notice, after all these things I mention, that I still gave it 4 stars. (I'd say it's like 3.75 to be honest, but that's almost 4.) That's because even after all of those things that bothered the extremely picky me, I read it in about 2 days. And, I'm pretty much never a "team" person, buuut.. team Seth. Yeah, I'm pretty attached to the characters.

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side!

firstly I would like to thank Vrinda Pendred, author of Mythos for giving me this wonderful opportunity of reading and reviewing this awesome book.

Where to start from? Well, this book is really awesome and I liked each element that the author introduced in this book from true friendship, essence of pure love, despair for the loss of loved ones and remembrance of family, betrayal, revelation of secrets, finding of own true identity and much more.

I loved the remarkable writing style of the author which did wonder in connecting me to the plot and to the characters as well. The characterization is really appreciable and I loved the main female lead.

The quest of finding the dreaded secrets and the way the author executed it was really great and it touched my heart. I never had read something like this before and the unique story line and plot did really spiced up the story for me.

I would definitely recommend it to ya all because it's fast-paced, well-written, full of eerie suspense and mystery and packed with just the right amount of action as well.

I'm really anxious for book 2 in this series and would definitely love to read and review it as well.

In the spirit of full disclosure I received an e-copy of the book {through Lovers Of Paranormal} in exchange for an honest review.

At first I feared I would only be able to give this a 3 star rating because A: Most of the first five chapters is backstory. B: I didn't fully connect to the main character. C: it took until chapter seven for me to get hooked into the story. And D: Itzy {the main character} is a bit too tame for me and feels sorry for herself too often for my liking.

That said, the originality is astounding. The author has taken the legends of Atlantis, Alien lore, and Greek mythology and wrapped them into an entertaining Mythology of her own. It's not often I see such originality that really grabs me anymore. It took a long time to get pulled into the story, but once the originality showed through I couldn't stop reading. At times I laughed, times I felt dissapointed for the characters.

Of all the characters first Seth {Itzy's brother's best friend} caught my attention, then Oz {Itzy's brother} then finally Aiden {the love interest}.

All in all I'm pleased with the story and the cliffhanger ending leaves you salivating for book two. Well done, Vrinda Pendred.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
When i picked up Mythos to read, i wasn’t in the mood for supernatural books- But this turned that frame of mind around! After reading so many supernatural books based on the same story lines and similar mythical creatures, this was a refreshing change! I have only read a few books based on Greek Mythology, but have always enjoyed them- Mythos was an exciting new twist on the mythology i have read before.
The Book is about a girl called Itzel, who after the catalyst of her fathers death, discovers that she is a Decedent of an Alien-Human super race. After her fathers funeral she reconnects with her brother Oz and his roommate Seth, who teach her about who she is and help her to discover more about her Linage. When she meets a mysterious Grey-eyes boy of her dreams (Literally) they help each other find out the meaning of her fathers last message, and what it could mean for them- and all of mankind.
This book kept on getting better the farther i read in to the book and the ending of the book has left me wanting to read the next one immediately! Looking forward to the release of book 2.

Wow! What an amazing story. It's so difficult to find Indie authors with unique ideas or at least a nice spin to an idea that is so well known.
I absolutely loved Itzy's confusion ,for it was so realistic and made her seem like an actual person rather than a one-dimensional character.
I don't know if this is a spoiler or not so just in case

There is a bit of frustration that I need to express...Why is there no date for the second book? I want it!

What I learned: True love can only be found with someone who balances you. Sounds really simple but this book perfectly exemplifies the need for this aspect in a relationship.

I'll start by saying that I read a lot of YA paranormal books and I read a lot of indie books. This novel was one of the better of each. The story was unique with its teenage alien plot and the book was well edited. In the total 300-something pages, I only found one misplaced comma and no typos. The characters are likeable and their emotions are believable, even the almost love at first sight between Itzy and Aidan. Their powers are distinctive compared to other YA paranormal novels. I believe this makes it better than many of the traditionally published YA paranormal novels out there. Many traditionally published stories use the "same old" super powers and plot lines so they start to sound the same after a while. Although this book used a similar plot formula, the new powers kept it interesting. I would recommend this book to YA lovers of paranormal or sci-fi.

First I would like to thank the author,Vrinda Pendred, for the chance to read this book. It's not my usual type but I loved it!!

The book starts out with the death of Itzy's dad. Through this she is given a chance to connect with her half brother who she never knew. They soon learn they are Descendants and the adventure begins. I love the depth and variety in all the characters. The true friendships really pull you in and keep you wanting more as they learn about their different powers. The ending leaves you hanging and wanting more. I can't wait until book 2 comes out. I will definitely read to see what happens next and if the find the "Wisdom".

I give this book 5 stars and I can't wait to read the next one.

This book combines all of my favourite things- romance, fantasy and engaging characters. It's easy when a new series comes along to judge it by what's already out there. I can honestly say this is such a departure from the YA literature that's available at the moment. It touches on relationships, spirituality and mythology in such an interesting way that by the end of it you find yourself impatient for the next instalment. I was a big fan of Vrinda Pendred from her previous work 'The Ladder' and can only say that I'm more and more excited about her as an author. She's proven that she can write very different types of fiction and make it engaging to various audiences. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. I cannot recommend 'Mthos' enough.

In comparison with other Young Adult Fantasy fiction out there this is a unique read. This is a sweet, multi-layered meaning novel with many themes: family, friendship, romance, the teenage years, domestic violence, family break up, death, destiny, prophecy, self-discovery, the meaning of life and of course, supernatural power! - and the list goes on. This is a startling début to a series that promises to only get better!

This book lays out the ground work for potential epicness (my own word haha) in the next books to come in the series.

I can't wait for the release of book two :)

I enjoyed this. The storyline was good, although I did think the romance was a bit abrupt. The book just seemed to fly by- it would be even more amazing if it was longer. Ms Pendred did a really amazing job of adding so many layers- love, fmaily, friends, jealousy, family- all the different components just combined and flowed so well. I got really caught up in the story and characters, with some awesome character developemt going on as well. The whole idea and the unique traits of their powers was great,. I look forward to reading the second book.

Thanks for giving me the chance to read this!

A copy of this book was provided by, We ❤YA Books, a Goodreads Group, in exchange for an honest review.

The Descendants, was a very original YA Fantasy Novel. The main characters are well written and multi layered. As with many series, the first book is all about explaining the premise of the series and introducing you to the characters. Just as the story got interesting, and the group of “talented friends” is on the cusp of discovering the "Wisdom", the book ends. Thankfully, there was no tragic cliff hanger. It ended in a good spot. I'm seeking the Wisdom myself, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

I do not understand why this book has so many 5 or 4 stars. Maybe because it was free for those reviewers? And therefore it can be quite awkward to say to an author this book is less-than perfect?
I got my copy off Amazon and have no ‘mandatory’ loyalty. I do not give ‘fluff’ reviews either. So here it is, unless you have an extremely high tolerance for teenage romance dramas, filled with young adult paranormal stock characters skip this book. I wish that I had.
I’d write up a more thorough review but it’s so not worthy of my time/effort to do so. I wish that I could get back the time that I have already spent reading it!

My WordsAfterwards:

This book is a slow starter and I got tripped up by the British English at points during the story. The "ye" and "like" usage in the book was somewhat of a mystery to me as a reader. Despite these two things I really enjoyed the story. By the end of the book I was totally engaged and wanted the second book. There was suspense, a love story, and paranormal aspects! Great first book of the series!

This is the first book I've read of Vrinda's and I'm beyond impressed by her writing! I'm not a huge fan of paranormal plots but this blew me away and I definitely can't wait for the second book in it's series. Her descriptions and way of setting the scene makes you feel like you are right there among the characters, which is the sign of a great writer. I love Vrinda's style of writing and can't wait to read more!

This book is fantastic! I loved the characters, they were fun, likeable, and well developed. This story reminded me of Casey Hayes' "The Cadence" because of it's carefully crafted writing. This book is another reason why I love goodreads and having a chance to read indie writers stories. Well done Vrinda Pendred!

Mythos is a very enjoyable easy read that I think YA readers will absolutely love. The characters are wonderful and the story line is very interesting and original. I found myself pulled into the story as Itzel found secrets about her life that she never could have imagined. I really liked this book and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I received an arc from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When I first read mythos, in my head I imagined the Greek gods. I didn't actually read the blurb. But it's more than that. It started at the civilization of Atlantis wherein aliens mated with humans and left which resulted to the descendants from these matings. Itzel came from a domestic abusive relationship from her father 7 years ago and recently she learned about his death. Upon attending her father's funeral she meets her half brother Osiris a.k.a. Oz and his friend Seth. Along the story, she learned from her brother about their lineage and for a moment it seems unbelievable despite having her power and seeing the unique powers of the others. She then meets, Aidan, the grey-eyed boy from her dreams and feels an instant connection to him. The four of them forms a friendship of sorts in order to find out about Stephen's cryptic message and what it would mean for them.

The book was actually a fun and very mysterious read. I love that their names are somehow always pertain to a god of religion/belief. I was more interested in Aidan and Itzel's relationship and how she was able to dream about him. And the mysterious Wisdom which the aliens will want to claim back. The characters are easy to like although that explains a certain trait they all have in common which is partly annoying for me (referring to Itzel). Although, I must say that I felt for their father when I understood why he acted that way. In the end, they can't be blamed for the things they do when it hits them.

I really enjoyed the twist in the story, the friendship, and the budding romance of Aidan and Itzel. The ending makes me crave more.

OK, it's official! I totally love this... :)

Definitely a 4.5 star read for me.

I just feel terrible that I didn't get to finish this right away. Because I totally finished in one sitting yesterday, starting from 34% and it's just awkward because I started reading it last October 3 :)) Wew, but I did had reasons for that though. hehe

Anyways, the story is really intriguing and utterly amazing. The characters were great, I love them all, most especially Itzy, Seth, and Aiden. :D The plot was fast paced but engaging, and the sort of love triangle is just wow. I was totally rooting for Seth first but when Aiden came along I just couldn't resist him. Itzy and Aiden are just perfect for each other in so many ways. I learned a lot in this book too and I am just happy that I get to read this.

Thank you Ms. Pendred. Looking forward to your other books, especially the Second Coming, wish I could get a hand on it right away.

P.S. The reason why only 4.5 is because I can't figure out the title, like why Mythos? hmmm

I really enjoyed this story. To me it was original, I've never read another plot like it. It was written so that there's never any dull points. The whole story flowed really well.
Itzy was believable as a teen girl, one that I felt sympathetic for. Although I do feel bad for Seth I really like him but the heart wants what it wants.
I wish she had met Aiden earlier might have saved Seth some heartache, but that really wouldn't have worked for the story. Oz isn't really delved into much so I hope to hear more about him in the future. There also isn't much metioned about Seth's past. Where is he from?
I wonder how many of these descendents there are and if they feel some pull towards each other? How else would Aiden know about Melody, and Seth and Oz discover each other?
I'm really glad I got the chance to read this because it might have been something I wouldn't pick up, but it's a great story. I will be continuing with the series.

I received this as a free eBook for an honest opinion.

I totally loved it! The characters were believable and likeable - my favourite was Seth. The author created an intriguing and original plot that utilised historical phenomena to construct meaning.

My only problem was the format of the book, though that might just have been the ePub version; every two lines was made of one whole line and a third of one line, throughout the entire book. At first it made my reading feel jerky, but I guess I got used to it after a while.

The vocabulary that was used in this text was awesome too! I loved that it was written in a way that implemented words such as "epistemologically", and didn't sound like it was written by someone with a poor repertoire of words.

I read this entire book in a day because I was so enthralled by the story (keep in mind that the copy I had was over 600 pages)

I DEFINITELY recommend this to everyone! :)

I have to say this was a very interesting book. I had very strong emotions while reading this book. I shared Itzy's emotions throughout the book. I loved how the book starts off with a bang and the surprises just continued. I loved almost all the characters in this book. However, I really disliked Melody. I couldn't stand her. From the moment she was introduced in the book I thought, "Who does this girl think she is?" But other than Melody I really liked all the characters. The book just really hooked me in and I just couldn't stop reading it. I loved the romance, the suspense, and the danger. I don't have anything bad to say about this book. All I have to say is that it is an excellent read.

RECEIVED A COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR A HONEST REVIEW Wow!!! I never thought I would be this excited to read a book about aliens, but this story was amazing!! So excited to read book 2!
With this being the first story of Vrinda's that I have read, I'm definitely impressed by her writing. The way she described the settings, I could picture everything while I read and I love that! I also felt that I could relate to the characters and the way the whole alien history is brought out made me so intrigued and didn't freak me out. GREAT READ!!
