This book definitely kept my interest and I can’t wait to read more. The world created here was brilliantly done and refreshingly new. The writing was a great balance between action and description. It would translate well to film or acting on the big stage. Five stars and I recommend it for teens and adults.

Volonians: Mysteries of the Vondercrat (Volonians#1) Christopher F. Edwards Jr. , Carlos O. Hardy

Volonians: Mysteries of the Vondercrat (Volonians#1) Christopher F. Edwards Jr. , Carlos O. Hardy introduces us to the world of Volonia and the witches and warlocks that inhabit the planet. Volonia is governed by the House of Lords and live by a class system. There are 5 sectors that divide the cities and 8 classes (each class having their own distinct function). The governing Lords use the Vondercrat, the most powerful book on Volonia, to help them govern and it takes all five Lords to summon the book or so they thought.

The Shifting of Class Ceremony was being held and it is mandatory for the citizens to attend. Vara Cutter however wanted to go on vacation instead. Vara, a Class Six Witch, decides she is going to conjure the Vondercrat so she can conjure a duplication spell for her and her kids, Broc and Shenzara. After Vera conjures the book, the kids and her go to the Isle of Waterfalls. Vera ends up getting caught. The Lords ask Vera how she did it and try to decide what her punishment should be.

Vera is able to escape with the help of Olivia, Lord Roman’s veil and Menace, a powerful warlock. Olivia wants to kidnap Vera to find out how she conjured the book but Mel, the person Olivia asks to help her, decides not to go through with it but tries to take her to a safe hideaway. Vera ends up giving herself over to the Lords and Lord Vondell places her and her kids in the Demons drop, which is a secure dark location until they are to be sentenced.

Vera and the Kids get exiled to earth. Once there they decide they need to talk to someone in charge. They end up taking a 4 hour cab ride to Washington DC to see the President. After having a bit of trouble at the gate, they end up inside and start to talk to the President telling him they just want to go back to their planet. They are not there to hurt anyone. At that point Olivia blows a hole in the side of the White House and starts fighting with Vera. Vera is then grabbed by Menace and Menace kills her. After that both Broc and Shenzara are able to perform very powerful magic.

After the funeral for their mother, Broc and Shenzara find out that they have been chosen by the Vondercrat. They are told that if they refuse this calling, the Volonia that they know and love now will no longer exist.

The authors have done a nice job at creating a new world that is full of magic, witches and warlocks. They have created a story with twist and turns, ups and downs. The story is chock full of excitement and keeps you turning those pages to find out what is going to happen. The characters were fun and interesting. I felt that 2nd half of the book was much better than the first half. It definitely was more exciting.

The only problem that I had with the book was with Vera. Vera acted like a young kid rather than an adult. I felt at times she was more like a sister than a mother to Broc and Shenzara. She cared about them but she was very irresponsible with a lot of her actions. She just didn’t come across mother like a lot during the story.

I think this book is okay. The world described is very interesting and the characters are very likeable. The story is very unpredictable and written in a nice way, without any unnecessary long descriptions.

However, I think there is a little too much magic. The characters use magic for literally everything (opening doors, changing clothes, etc.). The spells that are used are all written in capital letters, which makes you think everyone is always shouting to each other. It all makes the magic look a little silly.
The part of the story that takes place on Earth was unnecessary in my opinion, the story doesn't need it, it doesn't really add anything to the story. It only makes me wonder why the Volonians can speak English.

Furthermore, I think there are some inconsistencies in the book. For example, the preface speaks of a planet with the size of Jupiter and (only) 10 million inhabitants, that live in massive cities. But how can there be multiple massive cities with such a small population? Also, in the preface it is said that the Volonians live "...inside the planet, hidden beneath the outer surface." But if they live inside, why can they see the sun?

At the end of the book, some things are left unclear (at least to me). For example the distinction between Guardians, Guides and Volonians. Or the relationship between Varah and Olivia. However, I think these things will be explained in one of the sequels.

Interesting premise, but I didn't find any of the characters terribly likable. Mostly it was in desperate need of editing.

Vamore = Love It!
Great book to get young folks interested in reading. Plus the storyline will keep older readers journeying along as well. Nice to also see some main characters portrayed as People of Color and of means. Venturing between worlds, fighting evil in style and answering destiny's calling are just few situations. Glad that there is sci-fi out there for my Grandchildren that I only wished for when I was young. Woman in spotlight roles with brains and talent as well as beauty. Young folks learning from life's disappointment. Elders that are honored and revered. Great series for all and not just the typical fan-boy base.

This book kept me interested. I'm looking forward to the next book. I think if people liked Harry Potter they will be entertained and intrigued by Volonians.
