This book was horrible. Not the writing (which is par for translated-from-russian) but the experience the author feels is appropriate entertainment. From mass rape to torture to a demented Russian worldview where everyone has an angle and there's no goodness in anyone's hearts or ability for anyone to function together as a team outside the bounds of blood relationships (with a special exemption of non-related blood brothers), it's a literal nightmare from cover to cover.
It's a system apocalypse and a game has taken over but Mahanenko's twist on this is that the game and the aliens behind it are running a long con.
Most "litrpg" is power fantasy of improving oneself, gaining skills, wisdom, and experience. This is power fantasy from a pyschopathic viewpoint.

More like lots of mistakes...
This book might be a casualty of poor translation. Regardless, the writing is stilted and the actions of the main character are bizarre. These range from unrealistic psychological reactions to absolute gobs of time wasted despite the dire threat to a loved one. And there is some seriously harsh subject matter to get through. In a real SHTF scenario, people are going to do evil things to each other. No doubt. However, here it seems to be thrown in for shock value and filler.
Also, no one starves in a few days. Anyone with even a pittance of survival training knows that food is low priority at the start of any crisis event. Constantly wasting a scarce and vital resource (system points) to obtain food and other consumables was just inexcusable.
Simply not a good book and a pass for me, even as a fan of LitRPG and survival.

The Way of the Shaman and The Dark Paladin series were awesome, but this ... this is a disgusting. I had to persuade myself to finish this book.
The main plot is weak, characters is dull (only one character to be precise, because let's face it, there is no other characters, only the main hero; and he is DULL), the story is jumpy all the time. I had huge hopes for this series, but, unfortunately, I was disappointed.

Autor „Drogi szamana” powraca w wielkim stylu!
Gdy rzesza fanów gier RPG czeka na najnowszą aplikacje mobilną, która ma być najlepszą i najbardziej realną, jaką do tej pory widzieli, nawet w najgorszych koszmarach nie domyślali się, że niedługo staną się jej częścią, a Ziemia polem gry.
Na oczach Marka Derwina dziewczyna, z którą przed chwilą rozmawiał przeistocza się w bezlitosną, powykręcaną kreaturę, żądną krwi i łypiącą groźnie szczękami. Otrzymując powiadomienie na telefon może zadecydować: dołączyć do grona bezrozumnych istot, czy przeżyć, spróbować zawalczyć o przetrwanie i włączyć się do gry.
Gra rozpoczęta.
Fani Warhammera, Dungeon and Dragons oraz Warcrafta powinni zacierać łapki! Zdecydowanie jest to pozycja, która najbardziej ucieszy miłośników gier RPG oraz szalonych, mrocznych, ponurych wizji przyszłości. A dla mnie? Idealne połączenie obydwu tych światów, które uwielbiam, lit RPG z dystopią skierowane do dorosłych czytelników.
Ponownie Machanienko zabrał mnie do świata gry, jednak tym razem o wiele bardziej brutalnego i mrocznego, niż było to w przypadku „Drogi szamana”. I o ile, wtedy bohater miał świadomość, że żyje w symulacji i w rzeczywistości nic mu nie grozi, to tym razem stawka jest o wiele wyższa. Ziemia została zaatakowana i od przebiegu rozgrywki zależą losy jej oraz całej ludzkości. W tej grze “game over” jest prawdziwym końcem.
Od pierwszej, aż do ostatniej strony czytałam jak zahipnotyzowana, nie mogąc oderwać się nawet na chwilę. Nie pamiętam, kiedy ostatni raz pochłonęłam jakąś książkę w tak zawrotnym tempie. Poziom dynamiki przez cały czas był na podwójnej prędkości, a bohater przerzucany z jednych tarapatów w kolejne, jeszcze gorsze. Nie zabrakło gigantycznej liczby plot twistów, niedowierzania czy kilku (kilkunastu) niecenzuralnych słów. Powieść jest jednocześnie podobna do „Drogi szamana”, a zarazem zupełnie inna. Widać, że poprzednia książka była skierowana raczej do młodzieży, a tutaj jest już konkretna krwawa jazda bez trzymanki. Autor nie ma oporów przed znęcaniem się nad bohaterami, wrzucając na ich barki naprawdę ciężkie brzemię.
Miłośników rozgrywek na pewno zachwyci forma powieści, w której znajdziemy statystyki postaci, jej rozwój, czy łączenie się ze sklepem, wydawanie złotych monet i zbieranie modyfikacji. Wszystkie smaczki, które w świecie gier gracze lubią najbardziej.
Choć jest to dopiero pierwszy tom trylogii, zabrakło mi jakieś (jakiejkolwiek) silnej damskiej postaci, ponieważ powieść wyraźnie jest zdominowana przez mężczyzn – a kobiety, jeśli już się pojawiają, to cóż, los ich nie oszczędza. Wierze jednak, że jest to pole do popisu dla kolejnych części, a w poprzedniej książce autor pokazał, że potrafi wykreować intrygujące, charakterne bohaterki.
Podsumowując: jeśli kochacie gry RPG, lubicie mroczne i krwawe klimaty, szukacie książki zwariowanej szokującej, takiej, od której zagotuję się pod czupryną, to „Bez prawa do błędu” jest książką, na którą MUSICIE zwrócić uwagę.

(Review is copied from my review on amazon when I read this book back in Feb. All you need to know is that this book is horrible and you shouldn't read it. I read this for free with kindle unlimited and still feel ripped off months later)
This book is a train wreck
No, wait. I'm sorry. A train wreck would be interesting and fascinating. This book is too bland and boring to be a train wreck. It's the moment on the train when it has to make a sudden unexpected stop because there's sheep on the tracks and your phone is dead. And you spend hours just sitting and watching sheep. More interesting then staring at nothing but not by much.
In other words... I'm not sure why I didn't stop reading this book. I do think the beginning was interesting enough with potential that I kept reading. And then I just was puzzled by what it was doing that I kept reading. So it's got that. I guess. It has flat, boring, inconsistent characters (which it has next to none strangely), a strange and sad view of women... and frankly disturbing view, and a badly written world and story.
Spoilers from here on out.
Let's start with the story. It's an end-of-the-world story set in the litrpg genre. But no magic is involved. Just science from aliens. They don't really go together that well. I can picture it working if done right though, this was not done well. Leaving you completely confused by how this world is supposed to work. You got monsters. That were humans that didn't play the first game. This game that was super hyped and had, and I quote, millions and millions of users. But like the ratio to the monsters he runs into and the the real actual humans (cause there are fake humans created by the game but treated like players? They are called players even after it's revealed that they are basically npcs) is so off. Even if you add in the women that are being held prisoner and aren't really players... It just doesn't add up. For every actual human he meets or sees there's like an entire army of monsters. Later on it says it's all focused on cell towers because they are the main sources of technology we use for communication. Guess the internet doesn't exist? Or satellites? But they needed a reason why most of the North (it's just called North.... Canada? Russia? Scientists researching in the Arctic? I DON'T KNOW) didn't get changed and could fight back cause they have less cell phone towers... jeez. Also he gains like 30 to 50 levels in one fight by the middle of the story and jumps from under thirty to above two hundred in like no time. Also dungeons are useless and make no sense in the story what's so ever. AND WHY DIDN'T HE GO GET HIS SISTER AFTER HE HEARD SOMEONE BREAKING INTO HER POD?? No he had to go shot things.
Moving on to the weird attitude on women. There are no women characters. Squirrel (yes that's what his sister is called) is the closest you get and she spends two thirds of the book in a regeneration pod. There Margot... who turns into a monster at the start. There's Valdemar's Women, his wife and sister. Who get first seen on page 82 and don't get freaking named until page 364. He freaking saves them and they don't even have a conversation. And then there's Milady... who gets captured and killed within just a few chapters. That's it. Women are routinely described as hysterical and helpless. They are being captured left and right to be impregnated and give birth over and over to alien babies. Not monsters but the aliens that are treated as players. That have past memories from when their world lost the game... The story makes no sense if you think to hard about it. They save one group of these woman, and heal them but all their minds broke I guess so they're just brain dead? So they just automatically kill all of them from then on. Yep. And that's not even bringing up the odd quote here and there that just made me go... really? And the random women torture porn was not fun to read. Limbs being bitten off, the giving birth over and over, the raping cause that was just thrown in there and then quickly forgotten about.
Now on to the characters and world building.
In a single word... BLAND. There are two characters. That's it. The bad guys and the side characters are just killed off so quickly that you forget about them two pages later, the ones that aren't are just cardboard cutouts that are put there for plot, that's Olsen's sole purpose. And then the main character has no true motivation or personality for that matter. He likes... games? And had fancy sneakers in the first chapter? And his parents be dead. And he has a sister he loves but stops trying to save a fourth way through the book. The only other character is Grust. And he likes rifles. He said he was in love with Milady. And got upset about her little brother dying. And that is it. I guess I was wrong about them being inconsistent. They are consistently boring.
The world... I'm starting with the basics here. WHERE IS THIS STORY PLACED? America? Russia? The lost city of Atlantis? I don't know. There isn't a single named location in the whole story that doesn't have to do with the game. They mention cities and villages. But the only named village is Aspen and it's heavily implied that the entire place was made by the game. Is the city that has the general the same city that Squirrel is in? I'm guessing not because one was blown up but I don't know. Cause there is no name for nothing. He even gets maps downloaded to him and there are still no real life names to ground the story in our world. If you don't want to include real life places then why are you writing a litrpg set in our world not a game world? It would make this this story fill so much more real if you just weren't getting generic names for things. The general could be in charge of Moscow or New York City not just a city and it will be so much more interesting.
And the name of the enemies and monsters got old real quick for the same reason. Why is the big boss just called the general? Or the big larvae monsters just being called larvae. I get the lower leveled ones not having names but it just gets so boring. In every other litrpg I've read there's some unique monsters with names. But it's just another nameless thing to make things even more lifeless.
And the people names are dumb and stupid and don't fit in to the whole this is our world turned into a game world setting. This is where a make a list of a bunch of dumb names. Squirrel (could be nickname, I can let that slide.), Little, Milady, Grust, Wax, Valdemer, Margot. Not that many until you take in account that the only other named characters are Mark, Laura, Ava and three robots that have number names. This could be a translation thing though... I guess.

If I could go lower then one star I would. Other reviews are saying that his other books are good but I will be steering clear of this author. And the name of the enemies and monsters got old real quick for the same reason. Why is the big boss just called the general? Or the big larvae monsters just being called larvae. I get the lower leveled ones not having names but it just gets so boring. In every other litrpg I've read there's some unique monsters with names. But it's just another nameless thing to make things even more lifeless.
And the people names are dumb and stupid and don't fit in to the whole this is our world turned into a game world setting. This is where a make a list of a bunch of dumb names. Squirrel (could be nickname, I can let that slide.), Little, Milady, Grust, Wax, Valdemer, Margot. Not that many until you take in account that the only other named characters are Mark, Laura, Ava and three robots that have number names. This could be a translation thing though... I guess.
This book is not good. It's boring and lifeless. As flat as cardboard and just as flimsy. On top of that it's so problematic with the way women are treated in it. If I could go lower then one star I would. Other reviews are saying that his other books are good but I will be steering clear of this author. I can deal with boring books and storylines were the premise is enough for me to read the whole book and I shrug and move on. I don't usually do reviews but women are shown so badly in this book that I wanted to people to know. I don't like it and I can't see myself ever doing so.

"The women can do the whining and moaning"...What...What happened to Mahanenko? Is this honestly the same person who wrote 'The Way of the Shaman series?' How did Mahanenko go from creating a strong female character like Anastaria, who served as an equal and partner to Mahan to creating this trash where women exist solely to get raped.
That is NOT an exaggeration. An actual plot point in the story is 'Women of childbearing age has their limbs ripped off and are continuously impregnated to birth monsters.' I mean Come on REALLY?! And the process is irreversible so the women have to be killed but instead of the focus being on the women who have to experience this horrible trauma the focus is on how the men feel. LIKE HOW THE FU*K IS THIS ABOUT THE MEN!?

Meh, kinda me
Not sure, this novel really didn’t seem to flow or make sense to me. The main character barely seems to develop through the book and it seems to have a repetitive theme of he’s too week, Mc power wanks till he’s on top again. #repeat that a 100 times. Unfortunately barely any if not 0 decent side characters either. At the end of the book I feel disappointed and Unsatisfied.

Dość intrygująca przygoda. Dostajemy totalny hardcore w postaci gry na smatfony, która zawróciła ludziom w głowach. Godzina x zmienia rozgrywkę o 180 stopni. Powiedzieć, że stawką jest życie to za mało. Ci nieliczni, którzy przeżyją będę musieli uratować ziemię przed totalnym zniszczeniem. Skończona na prawie raz, gdyż z przerwą na sen. Całkowicie różniąca się od Drogi Szamana ale wciągająca jak diabli. Nie zachwyciła mnie aż tak jak poprzednia seria ze względu na klimat ale i tak spędziłem przyjemnie te 6 godzin :)

W Szamanie wszystko było wyjaśnione i miało logiczny porządek, a tutaj ani to ciekawe, ani sensowne, a główny bohater... w sumie minęło 10 dni i mam problem, żeby sobie coś przypomnieć z tej książki, bo była taka nijaka. Pióro dalej przyjemne i płynie się przez książkę, ale cholera jasna, to było do dupy.

Jeżeli ktoś czytał poprzednią serię tego autora i nie podobało mu się, że główny bohater ma za łatwo to niech nie czyta tej pozycji - tytuł tej pozycji idealnie opisuje story arc głównej postaci.
Bardzo się ucieszyłam na tę pozycję, gdyż poprzednia seria autora była dobrą rozrywką - miała pewne mankamenty, ale można było je brać z przymrużeniem oka. Dodatkowo koncept na tę pozycję jest bardzo ciekawy.
Niestety na tym pozytywy się skończyły.
Nie jest to pierwsza książka autora, jednak styl autora tak bardzo odstaje od tego z poprzedniej serii i niestety jest to na ogromny minus. Wygląda to jakby osoba kompletnie nieznająca się na pisaniu wzięła się za to - tragedia.
Poza samym stylem bardzo denerwujące było to, że główny bohater dostawał wszystko co mu potrzebne, a do tego jesgo postać była tak bardzo antypatyczna, co tylko potęgowało irytację lekturą tego tworu.
Wątek siostry głównego bohatera był kompletnie niepotrzebny - po przeczytaniu nadal nie wiem co on tam w ogóle robi. Pojawił się na początku książki, później zniknął i wrócił na jedną scenę gdzieś w środku oraz przy końcu.
O plot twistcie, który wyszedł gdzieś w środku książki musiała mi w ogóle powiedzieć osoba trzecia, bo kompletnie mój mózg wyparł to już w trakcie czytania.
Jest to dla mnie ogromne rozczarowanie, gdyż 'Droga Szamana', czyli poprzednia seria autora mimo swoich wad była świetną rozrywką. Ta książka miałabyć rozrywką, a była tak zła, że szkoda słów. Na pewno nie zamierzam kontynuować tej serii.

3,5 Niesamowicie wciągająca gra, która pochłania gracza na wiele godzin, dosłownie pochłania, bo świat z gry przeistacza się na świat rzeczywisty. Wyobrażacie sobie stać się nagle bohaterem gry? Na dodatek bardzo brutalnej, ze stworami przerastającymi nas o kilka głów? Dla mnie koszmar. Dla naszego bohatera Marka też, chociaż wiedział co go czeka, bo miał już okazje grać w tę grę. Na świecie zapanował chaos na który nikt do końca nie był gotowy. Mark nie tylko chronił swoje życie, ale też młodszej siostry, która utknęła z dość niebezpiecznym miejscu, z szemranymi ludźmi.
Latem sprawiają mi przyjemność lekkie książki, z wciągającą fabułą i ciekawymi rozwiązaniami i motywami, nie jestem przekonana czy dostałam to wszystko od tej pozycji. Wiele rzeczy mnie bardzo irytowało, szczególnie to, że autor okazał się mizoginem. Nie było ciekawej postaci kobiecej, która by miała jakikolwiek charakter. Kobieta to przedmiot albo karta przetargowa, tyle można wywnioskować. Confusing and Without Rules
One of the reasons I enjoy LitRPG is because of the rule sets defined in those worlds. The rules make for fun progression and interesting situations. My biggest problem with this novel is its complete disregard for most of its own rules. Just when you think you understand the basics, you realize the author can simply add new skills or attributes. They come completely out of nowhere, and to me feel like an author that couldn’t figure out a meaningful path through the situation. It’s... incredibly frustrating to read.
Another big problem: characterization. Nobody has any personality whatsoever. They are all thin as tissue paper. The main character has no inner life or ideas of his own. He’s an empty puppet. By the end of it, I barely even knew his name.
Thirdly, the writing in general was poor. Many major combat moments are let down by the skipping of description or the misplacing of words. I reread numerous paragraphs trying to understand what was going on, and sometimes failed to do so.
Yet... I somehow finished it. So there was something deep down that kept me engaged. But I definitely would not recommend this book to anyone else.

Ive read every other book by the author and was excited to read this. Book is weak. Writing is good but the overall arch is lame. Events were added which seemed like filler to lengthen the book.
About 87% into the book i got fed up and started skipping just to get to the end. Hard pass on this series.

No co ja mogę powiedzieć? Zupełnie co innego niż Droga szamana, ale to nie znaczy, że gorszego 😁 Kocham autora całym sercem i chyba będę czytać wszystko co zostanie wydane 😅

To było długie oczekiwanie na kolejną książkę Machanienki w Polsce. Od czasu, kiedy dowiedziałam się, że zostanie wydana kolejna powieść litRPG, chciałam ją dostać w swoje ręce. Do oficjalnej premiery jeszcze kilka tyg, ale mam ją i właśnie skończyłam czytać.
Jeśli chodzi o moją ocenę, to większość wie, że kocham Drogę Szamana, a Machanienkę uważam za swojego ulubionego autora.
Wiadomo więc, że oczekiwałam wiele.
Wiadomo, że się nie zawiodłam.
Zdecydowanie nie jest to DS i choć bardzo chciałam nie mogłam porównywać jednej książki do drugiej (i dobrze). Hybrydowy świat gry wdrożony w rzeczywistość jest całkiem świeżą koncepcja na rozbudowanie książki, a ciągła akcją nie daje zasnąć nad historia Marka.
Czytelnik podąża za fabuła gry i coraz mocniej kibicuje w nierównej walce z tajemniczym wrogiem, który najechał ziemię.
Ciekawi mnie, ilu z was podjęło by się takiej gry, ja zapewne poległabym na samym początku 😅, ale jedno jest pewne – przetrwam do kolejnej części Świata przeistoczonych. Kto ze mną?

Chwilę przed godzina X, Mark przechodzi podziemia zapewniające mu bonusy na starcie gry. A sam start gry wprawia go w osłupienie, gdy kobieta obok zaczyna zmieniać się w potwora, a jego telefon wysyła komunikaty o przemianie oraz konieczności użycia antidotum. Szok, niedowierzanie… następnie już tylko walka o przetrwanie.
Co jest fikcją i w jaki do cholery sposób gra z telefonu przeniosła się do rzeczywistego świata? Kto jest za to odpowiedzialny 🧟♂️👽? Teraz nie było czasu na te pytania, cel — przetrwać i odnaleźć siostrę. Tylko jak gdy wokół roi się od potworów, którzy jeszcze chwilę temu byli ludźmi…

"Hełm ukrył mój paskudny uśmieszek, ale kobieta po tonie głosu poznała, że zaraz zdarzy się coś nieprzyjemnego. Kiedy zacząłem rozpinać jej spodnie, przestrzeń wypełniła się groźbami i przekleństwami. Najgłośniej wrzeszczał Młody, kobieta zaś znosiła rozbieranie w milczeniu. Z płomiennej mowy chłopaka zrozumiałem tyle, że ja, niedorobiony gnojek i impotent, mam nie ruszać jego siostry. Grust milczał, ale nie spuszczał ze mnie wzroku. Gdy skoczyłem z paskiem, opuściłem jej spodnie do kolan i wyjąłem maczetę. Krótki zamach, cios... i prawa noga Milady odpadła od ciała. Młody gwałtownie zamilkł, Milady zaś nie wytrzymała i wreszcie zaczęła wrzeszczeć. Krzyczała nie dlatego, że ktoś postanowił ją zgwałcić, ale dlatego, że czuła cholerny ból."
Myślę że nie trzeba nic więcej dodawać jaka to książka.

Mam dość mieszane uczucia. Z jednej strony czyta się szybko i przyjemnie, z drugiej strony książka jest bardziej ponura niż serial Walking Dead. Każdy jest wrogiem, każdy szuka korzyści/zysku dla sieb ie. A cały plot wyjaśniony w bardzo durnowaty sposób (W Szamanie jeszcze elementem przeniesienia się do gry był symulator-maszyna, a tutaj... Cóż :) ) byle tylko jakoś się to spinało w całość, chociaż i tak mam wrażenie, że ma luki.

What a strange book. Let me preface by saying I loved the Way of the Shaman series- I would even consider WotS near the top of the list of required reading for LitRPG lovers, certainly outstanding despite being a translation.
However, this novel was fascinatingly bad, especially when compared to his other work. I can only assume this was a poor translation, including choppy dialogue, rushed character development and relationships, a lack of persistent non-main characters, confusing/lack of consistent universal rules, exposition-by-way-of conspicuous overheard conversations from afar, over-the-top yet somehow deadpan gore, unrealistic emotional reactions, little-to-no self-reflection, forgotten plot and motive (his sister trapped).....
And yet? For whatever reason, I couldn't put it down. No, it wasn't the same fascination as a bystander watching a train-wreck. To be honest I can't tell you what I enjoyed about this book. The world was somewhat interesting, the premise was unique, but overall nothing too special. I'd save this book for when you have nothing else pressing to read-- it may surprise you.
I, for one, will be reading the next one in hopes there is a better translation. I know Vasily can write a better story than this. Fingers crossed

I don't know why I'm reading this. I dropped this author's Virtual Prison Shaman series, yet here I am picking up his cellphone series.
Does this author have a sister-complex? This is a different book and the protagonist is mentioning his little sister, again. If this turns out to be the protagonist and his sister teaming up to fight monsters, or the sister working in a support roles, I'm dropping this book.
The author didn't indulge his sister complex this book by working together, he instead indulged it by saving her from the big bads. This book got more ridiculous as the story progressed. He got just the right items he needed after defeating a quest. This was just a self power masturbation novel, that didn't hide it well.
I won't continue with the series.

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.
So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Growing Tired...
I'm not even angry anymore and that might be the worst emotion I could have towards the Lit-RPG genre as a whole. After all, the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. This is the second book by Mr. Mahanenko I've read and I haven't enjoyed either. The author spends no time establishing location or character and so we, the readers, are taken from one event to the next with little reason to invest ourselves in the story.
I could go into depth and pick this piece apart bit by bit but why bother.

Pretty intense
So many different games come to mind reading this... Fallout, Half-Life 2, even Pokemon Snap. The action and intensity keep up all the way through. When one mission is done there's another needing immediate attention. I look forward to the next one for even bigger explosions. Great start for the series. A lot of action. Not much interaction. Very much like playing a solo game.
Score: 8.2 out of 10

Waste
Poorly thought out. Unimaginative. Unfocused MC. Don't say the mc will have to watch out for humans then in next sentence feel bad for a human and then giving them items. Constantly giving away either money or items to others that don't end up meaning anything in the story. Mission, save sister, need to get stronger first, reach level 300 and still not trying to get to sister.
At end of book only one thing I learned. Unfocused Author. Sad

When playing the game gives you an edge when your world BECOMES the game, and your life hangs on your very next move, what would you do? Another of Vasily Mahanenko's tales that I thoroughly enjoyed...only in this one the entire world gets logged in, whether they wanted to or not, in a pending-apocalyptic end-of-the-world, alien invasion, litrpg-style piece of science fiction-fantasy. Time I looked for Book 2!
