A fairly classic small-town reunion/secrets story. It may not have had the most original storyline, but it was still rather enjoyable with good characters and romance and some interesting twists at the end. Like most books by Donovan, it was an easy, quick read.
In The Girl Most Likely To... Kat Cavanaugh/Turner is returning to her hometown twenty years after running away as a scared, alone and pregnant teenager. She's made good on her life and has every intention of showing herself off and getting apologies she feels she deserves. But from the start, things don't go quite as planned.
The boyfriend who dumped her before she could tell him she was pregnant already knows her big secret, and despite all that's happened between them, the love and lust is still there. Riley, though, is furious with her for keeping their son from him. When the truth and explanations are finally given, both have to take a step back reevaluate all that happened. Especially if they want to give themselves another chance at love. Forgiveness, though, is a tricky thing. They'll have to work hard to put the past behind them to build a new life, even as Kat encounters secrets she couldn't even have imagined.
If you've ever read a small-town reunion story involving a secret child, then you have a fair idea of what happens in this book. It's a pretty basic reunion story. But even so, I enjoyed it. The characters were great and the chemistry between the H/H was obvious. Donovan mixes things up by adding a quirky best friend, a potentially psychotic stalker ex-fiancee, a conniving gossip, and a creepy father. So there's enough variety to keep the story from being stale.
And I liked how Donovan sort of had a theme to the book. That of forgiveness and understanding that sometimes people makes mistakes trying to make the best choice possible. It worked well for the book and I thought Donovan did a good job bring it full-circle through the story.
It's been a while since I've read a book by Donovan so I don't remember how steamy her books usually are, but though there isn't a lot of sex in this book, it's a little more explicit than your average contemporary romance. Nowhere near erotic level, just a bit more explicit. The few scenes between the H/H were definitely hot.
One of the things I missed in this book, though, was Donovan's typical quirky, laugh-out-loud humor. Usually her books have me cracking up more than once, but this one didn't really have that. It was a big more serious and emotional. Which isn't a bad thing; I just missed the humor.
The only other thing that bothered me was that when I was finished, there were a couple of things I wondered about. One was that I wanted to know how things ended up with Matt and Nola (Riley's brother and Kat's best friend). The epilogue didn't say and I was disappointed. I actually went to the author's site after finishing to see if maybe there would be another book featuring them, but it doesn't look like there will be. And also, I wanted to know if Riley was able to save his house...most likely he did, but it didn't actually say and I wanted to know that.
Otherwise, this was a pretty solid lighter contemporary romance. Not too deep, but not so fluffy it was superficial and bored me. If you've read Donovan before, I think you'd like this one. Or if you're just a contemporary romance fan, then I'd recommend trying any book by Donovan. She tells a good romance story.
