“If you don’t pay me £250,000.00 in the next 48 Hours you will die”. The text on Josh Hammond’s BlackBerry was blunt and chilling. Surely it must be a joke, but when Josh is attacked in broad daylight and people around him start to die he knows that his blackmailer is deadly serious. Can Josh raise the money, can his attractive new bodyguard protect him, who is blackmailing him and why? He has 48 hours to find out. The first novel in the acclaimed City of London Thriller series is a hit which will enthral everyone who knows and loves its London settings.

City of Thriller Series. Book 1

"If you don't pay me £250,000.00 in the next 48 hours, you will die." The text on Josh Hammond's phone was blunt and chilling. Surely it must be a joke, but when Josh is attacked in broad daylight, and people around him start to die, he knows that his blackmailer's deadly serious. Can Josh raise the money, can his attractive new bodyguard protect him, and who is blackmailing him and why? He has 48 hours to find out.

There are a huge amount of spelling mistakes in this book. Even the characters names kept changing, i.e. from Michael to Martin then back to Michael. The premise was intriguing, but unfortunately, not all of the book lived up to the promised standard. We got pointless information about a football match. Some parts felt a little dragged out. At first this story had me gripped, then it went downhill from there. I kept reading on, as I honestly thought it would get better again.

I was intrigued by this novel's premise - a sudden demand to pay £250,000 in 48 hours or be killed. It seemed crazy but equally something that could happen to you out of the blue in real life. I imagine, like Josh, I would think it was a hoax, but the baddie's subsequent actions show you just how serious he is and you wonder what you would do in similar circumstances. The main character, Josh, was a bit wet when it came to women, which was actually a refreshing change, but I could feel for him and his situation all the same and wanted to see him get justice. I loved Dee – she was a tough-as-nails heroine, calm under pressure and resourceful. The scenes told from the baddie's POV made his motives seem reasonable and even vaguely understandable. Overall this is a gripping thriller you would be crazy to miss – especially as it’s FREE!

The author is on to something here, but its desperately executed and awfully written.

For example the characters are pretty good, the lead, the body guard, the police are all believable. The villain, despite being almost a poor boy made good stereotype is just awful. The book also flits between perspectives even when dealing with one character, giving it an annoying read.

Then we have the show dont tell. Just before something happens, the main character explains it to us or the body guard does or someone else does. But the whole thing is signposted throughout.

The main character also has an annoying habit of getting it before anyone else. Then theres the name dropping, if I read another chapter with a watch or an appliance I think Id throw my kindle out of the window. There is also much of the book borrowed from "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", characters, even some of the plot, theres nothing wrong with recycling but most of it is thinly veiled stuff.

The plot however isnt that bad and the book has a decent pace, the author though needs a good editor and at least a number of rewrites before he publishes the next one ( theres a number written). I may delve into them to see if any have improved. Only if its free on the Amazon website of course.

I found this book on the Kindle Store for free and so I thought that I would give this a go. This is a pretty good thriller book that keeps you entertained throughout. I have the Kindle version which has a few spelling mistakes and grammer problems. This book works just as well if you read it alone or in the series. The characters were interesting and the storyline kept you reading on to find out what would happen next. The author described the characters in good detail which helped to relate to the characters especially Josh who is the main character as instead of a confident bigheaded male lead, this one is actually pretty terrible when it comes to women which makes a nice change as he seems more vulnerable. It is a very gripping thriller that isn't too overly complicated and is easy to read, I would definately recommend giving it a go.

This book is in serious need of an editor, the most glaring mistake being the sentence that claimed that UK time is an hour ahead of European time, when the reality is in fact the opposite... Characters' names kept changing, particularly Michael to Martin and Martin to Michael, and there was a Jason/Jonas as well. A few basic typos that could have easily been picked up cropped up.

*SOME SPOILERS AHEAD*

As usual with these thriller books, the characters were not particularly likeable - in this book I found them more so than usual, though, but I still didn't care for them very much. I found the romance to be unnecessary and rather farcical, and I despised the way Josh kept talking about Dee early on as if she were his property, or at least his girlfriend - he's always jealous when she laughs with another man, and at one point he actually uses the word 'disapproval' when she so much as spoke to another man! Not to mention when he first met her, all he could do was eye her up, and we were treated to a long, detailed description of how her skirt length was short enough to be interesting (hmmm) but long enough to be "modest". Even when she was working professionally - as his bodyguard no less - he doesn't seem to treat her very seriously at first, even though he is impressed with how she works. And then all of a sudden they're engaged after twelve days!

Too many stereotypes/clichés, from the geeky analyst to the red-headed Scot, to the "Sharia Islamic Bank of Arabia". Yeah, if that's a real place in London, someone let me know, but Google turned up no results and it sounds like the most ignorant name I've ever heard (though as I said, my indignation could be unjustified). People looked "Arabic" and "Latin", and a young girl's accent was described as "more East End than Middle East", as if a Muslim girl can't have been born in and grew up in East End London. None of it sat well with me, and I'm sure if I were to Google, the author would be white. (That's just been confirmed, actually. No surprises there.)

The character Don Fisher is a complete copy-and-paste of Sir Bob Geldof, right down to the three oddly-named daughters. Why this author felt he couldn't write his own background for this character remains to be seen, but it's as if he's taken the Geldof family and literally done nothing but rename the lot.

A few procedural discrepancies are present, and of course criminals who are touted as quick-thinking and careful make stupid and transparent mistakes to conveniently aid the police investigation. It's fine for a Kindle freebie, fine for a run-of-the-mill thriller, but needs a few things ironed out. Not sure whether I'll read the next two books in the series, but since this one only took me a day, I might end up trying. I just hope the next one doesn't have a painfully elaborate description of a football match like this one does!

An interesting thriller that keeps you engaged throughout…

The characters are likable enough to keep you reading and you never quite know which twists and turns are going to come up next.

However, one thing you do know is that you can have a lot of fun on this ride!

I really liked the premise to this tale and the short bursts of drama led chapters really carried it along in a measured way: I started to think here's a five star novel, but then... The pointless over information based football match and constant author intrusion, I guess you are a football fan in real life, nothing wrong with that but keep it out of your writing. So we were down to four stars then despite the standard disclaimer that all characters are fictitious and any coincidences coincidental, along comes Don Fisher, his back story, family, wife, career is Bob Geldof's, even down the the infamous live rant from the BT tower during Live Aid...Lack of imagination means we're now down to three stars.

There's a handful of typos, Crippin has a name change to Crippen a few chapters on, there was an example of 'their' instead of 'there' and at one point the author had Europe incorrectly an hour behind GMT.

There's a few issues with POV and the blatant, 'Dee hadn't been to this area in London before and was surprised at how upmarket it had all become'. If she had never been there, how could she be surprised in its change in circumstances.

The story picks up and it is back up to four stars as the pace is maintained and the idea is still working well, then the criminal who is particularly careful and gadget savvy offers the cops his camera to use... an unbelievable piece of writing, so we're back down to three stars.

Overall the writing is good if not a little flowery in some places and a tad patronising in others but I did feel that this could have been trimmed down with a good edit into a punchier novel.

48hrs Is actually a really refreshing thriller set in London.

J Jackson Bentley has crafted really good book right from the outset where Josh the main protagonist receives a text on his blackberry by an unknown person telling he has to find a quarter of a million pounds in 48hrs or he'll be killed, a just as Josh was convincing himself that it's a prank by one of his few friends who actually know he has that sort of money to his disposal he receives an email that throws a doubt that it is in fact one of his friends.

Josh confides in his boss who doesn't want his protégée killing anytime soon they seek the help of private security company who send Dee an attractive personal bodyguard to ensure Josh's safety.

What ensues is a story of intrigue blackmail and murder with a whole host of interesting characters.

The only reason I haven't given this 5* was it took me more time than I would of liked to get into the story probably more down to me than the book.

I plan on reading more of J Jackson's books

I finished the book but won't read any more. This book seems to polarise readers. I am from the negative side. It was hard to read because it felt so wooden & forced. The author seems to feel the need to over explain everything. Like a comedian explaining his jokes, this doesn't work. The idea was decent, the twists & turns had potential but the delivery made it become painful reading for me by the end.

A well-paced thriller...
3 stars because the plot became a little long-winded and the the main characters were quite stereotyped. Having said that, it must be almost impossible to create totally new fiction in this genre.

On the plus side, the detailed geography of London added to the atmosphere the author maintained throughout the story, which would make a good TV mini-series in 4 parts...

Overall it was a relatively entertaining read however I found the writing a little patronising at times and I found myself rolling my eyes at Josh and Dee's relationship. Also, the idea of a security guard and an insurance loss adjuster being so heavily involved in a police investigation was a bit unrealistic. Too many typos for my liking.

Been generous giving this a 3 - probably 3 minus. A pacy thriller set around London - blackmail, art theft, kidnapping. But entertaining enough.

A good plot, and some interesting ideas, but let turn by poor writing.
The book starts off with the clock ticking. The main character has to pay an eye watering sum of money or else face being killed. This is really only an intro to the wider theme, which basically morphs into a hunt the killer type of affair.
There is enough content and plot, enough twists in the tale, to make what should have been a page turner. Instead it’s been spoiled by product placement, plot reveals instead of letting the twist unfold, and some really too self congratulatory characters.
At one point there was a section where the detective group were deducing a crucial clue (which was like pulling teeth getting to the answer), and once they’d solved it, the style of writing had me expecting them to tuck into lashings of creamy Devon custard. Too cheesy, and more than a bit of a turn-off.
There is also a problem with too much detail of the wrong type. For example. I don’t need to know that a sandwich came from Pret A Manger, but I would like to know what flavour it was. I don’t need to know the specifics of one side street in London, but I would like to know that it is near a specific landmark or well known area. The problem is that an assumption is made that you know the general area, so the author skips over the wider picture, to deep dive into detail, that doesn’t make sense if you don’t know the area.
Overall the book was ok - good plot and ideas, but poor and irritating writing style. Not one I’d recommend.

The first of the City of London Thrillers series, this tells the back-story of some of the characters who feature in Chameleon. Often, in a series, reading them out of order can be disruptive to the flow of the stories, but not in this case. I did know of some of the events in 48 Hours from later references in Chameleon, but because they were just reference points rather than repeats of what happened it meant that I was able to enjoy 48 Hours and learn what actually happened in the earlier book.

In 48 Hours the author skilfully weaves together several story-lines, slowly building the bigger picture. The attention to detail is fascinating - I now know how heavy in kilograms is £1m in £50 notes: that's one to squirrel away for a future pub quiz! I also very much enjoyed the insights into the relationships between the police, the secret service and the establishment, and how not rocking the boat is sometimes seen as an acceptable solution even when serious crimes have been committed. The romance and humour were added bonuses, serving to lighten the mood or ease the tension when the action became more threatening.

Again the minor niggle of spelling and punctuation issues, and one instance where a name is wrong, but overall this is a humdinger of a story, well worth reading, and one that I would tag as "un-put-downable".

This was a strange one! The first 25% was great and had me gripped, although by the end of this section we already know who the blackmailer is and why they have chosen their subject, so I was wondering what the remaining 75% would hold. It didn't have me hooked as much as the first quarter of the book but was still a good read for a free book. I'm not going to bother with any more in the series though as I have enough on my kindle to get through!

Just good easy read.

A lot of conflicting reviews on this one and after reading i have to side with the positives. Yes it's your standard thriller but a bloody fun one both with some twists and a few not believable bits. Being involved with law i just can not see police allowing victims that much invlovment with fhe investigation. But it does not matter it's a fun action read. Take it for what it is. I will be lookng on Amazon for the rest of the series.

Good read.

I think I may have started to read this book a while ago, why I didn't finish it at the time I can't recall.
Anyway I read again from the beginning and can say continued to the conclusion.
It's an easy read, I like the fact you can visualise the area around London, the buildings.
The story itself was good, a couple of times caught me by surprise.
No spoilers, you'll have to read it yourself....

Great story for the beginning. But I felt it could've just been the 48 Hours of each victim until the culprit was caught. The descriptions were amazing.
I was very disappointed to find that the only female character (the bodyguard) fell for the male lead - in a clique move. The second half of the book was marred by their romance and suddenly the independent female character was not so independent after all, and required rescuing.

I enjoyed this book!!

I really enjoy reading books by authors that I have never heard of and read before. That's the reason for choosing this book. I enjoyed this book a lot. It gave a glimpse into how a black mailer would try to what they wanted from another person and the lengths that they would be willing to go to get what they want and avoid being caught at all costs.

It just went on too long

I don't know what else I can say about this. It was a decent book, but went on for far too long. Decent story, you know who the villain is almost from the start, but that's no bad thing, but when the author should really have wrapped it all up it just felt like he kept on writing for no understandable reason.

Gripping

This is one of the best I have read. Superbly written, and although the villain is identified early on the twists and turns as the police struggle to find evidence to prove his guilt is fascinating

Yet another storyline that starts with great promise only to descend into farce. Such a shame. It is reasonably well-written and engaging, but has too many unnecessary explanations and descriptions and should have ended about halfway through.

Okay

I'm an Inspector Morse fan. This is not close, the story itself would have been good if told with more dialogue rather than the humdrum of long drawn out explanations.

I enjoyed the sightseeing of London, the history was cool. Not sure if Sir Bob would enjoy it though.

Great story,too much waffle.

Although the storyline was exciting I marked it down due to the endless waffle of what everyone was wearing. I also marked it down due to the unnecessary but usual love story and most infuriating of all the derogatory terms used at times when reffet

This author has come up with a very good idea for what could've been a great, past paced thriller. Unfortunately he doesn't quite deliver. A bit of a shame really. Completely unbelievable characters and predictable plot twists lead to a disappointing conclusion.

I confess I didn't finish this book, I couldn't bring myself to as I found it so irritating to read. It was so overly descriptive it felt like it had been written by a high schooler trying to cram in as many similes and metaphors as they could.
