As a kid in the 70's, I loved the TV show The Incredible Hulk. While I was also a comic book junkie, I did not read the comic 'Hulk' as much as I did say, Batman or Spider-Man. For me, the TV show was better than the comic book at the time. I picked up vol 7 of The Essential Hulk, which covers the years 1979-80. While I have not read the volumes before it, I was still able to get into the story with no touble. If you are a big Bruce Banner fan, I have some sad news-Banner REALLY takes a back seat here, to The Hulk. Whole issues go by, and we see nothing of Banner. And when we do, the scenes where he changes back into the monster are 'eehh'...not all that great.(IMO) The stories here, are good though. Hulk tears stuff up-A LOT! Hulk says "Bah"... And Hulk tears stuff up, A LOT..... The art is really good, though I feel they go back and forth on the height and mass of the Hulk. Sometimes he looks huge, others, not so much. Some good guest stars here...Captain America(great cover too!) Power Man and Iron Fist are mentioned on the blurb in the back, but if you blink, you'll miss them. Captain Marvel is here as well. Oh, and President Jimmy Carter!!!!!(I kid you not) I did enjoy this. I just wish we had more Banner....
This was when I got into reading Hulk comics and I'd forgotten how good this stuff was, the end of the Roger Stern era and the very beginning of the Bill Mantlo decade.
Lots of Hulk, very little Banner, an interesting, diverse ensemble of supporting characters, lots of big action scenes, great bad guys and a lot of very cool guest stars. There are great 'Hulk Smash!' moments, but there are also some quieter bits that give Hulk some solid characterization and emotional depth.
Fun to remember the days when three issues was an epic and when you got recaps and explanations, instead of writers assuming you've read every issue.
Plus, it was very cool to see them use the Hulk comic to wrap up the loose story threads from one of my favorite short-lived, goofy characters, It, the living colossus!
