Foxtrot Team #1

The Shadow of Mudflap

Rate this book
To us, first responders are heroes. But for them, risking their lives is a normal, everyday thing.

Mudflap:
Born the baby of the family, Mudflap has always had something to prove to emerge out of the shadows of his older siblings. He spent eight years as a Special Ops elite sniper and is now a firefighter. But at his heart, he’s just a normal West Texas good old boy who loves his beer, women and football, until the Department of Defense calls him up to say they need his skills again.

Shanae:
Shanae is a first responder of a different sort. She’s a trauma nurse who works on a medical evacuation helicopter team. But while she lives a life full of adrenaline every day, it’s just a cover for her real life, where she hides in the shadows and is secret agent, Shadowfox for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team (LiFT). She’s living the kind of life that most people think exists only in movies and books.

Working for two different branches of the government, Mudflap and Shanae are in a race against time and the terrorists who threaten the very heart of West Texas life, football. They’re working toward the same goal, but find themselves in a confrontation against each other and the lies they’ve each had to hide behind. Can love win out in the end or will the cost be each other and their very lives?

First responders are heroes every day, but this story tells the tale of when they become even more and find love along the way. The key is for them to stay alive so that they can complete their mission and just maybe live happily ever after.

On an ordinary day, they save lives. On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

The number one reason this book is awesome to me is the very last line in the synopsis. I love it someone does something for a good cause and that is exactly what Christi Snow and M.F. Smith have done here.

Anyone who loves college football season will love the Shadow of Mudflap. Shanae and Mudflap are investigating a string of arsons that are connected and pointing to the college team that happens to be having a shockingly good season. To keep readers on their toes and the characters frustrated one too many government agencies has been added to the locale and not informed the others. Shanae is trying to keep work and personal life separate. Mudflap keeps entering Shanae’s work life while she is trying to keep him in the personal life. Then there are the odd occurrences that keep everyone wondering what is really going on.

This first book in the Foxtrot Team series has a fun mix of pride for your favorite team, a little suspense, a dash of romance, and a huge amount of good deed. Go buy you copy! Now. All the proceeds from this novel will go to the Lubbock Red Cross.

The Shadow of Mudflap is an enjoyable story involving secret agents, a domestic terrorist organization, motorcycle gangs, and, at the heart of it all, Texas football. If you don’t already know this, then let me be clear: Texans take their football seriously! Snow and Smith do not exaggerate the importance of this sport one bit. I wouldn’t have believed it until I moved to Texas five years ago. Football is sacred here.

Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down and pretty much finished it in one sitting. The characters are well-developed and have their own personal issues to confront as they covertly work to stop a local terrorist organization, the ALT who seems to have targeted the Texas Tech football team to advance its own agenda.

Mudflap Davidson, and yes that’s his real name, is a sexy, gorgeous firefighter who gets pulled into the conflict when the Army asks him to go undercover to watch for suspicious, threatening activities that may harm the Texas Tech football team. Because of Mudflap’s role in the community and his skills as a former special ops sniper, he is able to easily slip into an undercover role working for the Department of Defense.

When he begins to pursue the pretty paramedic who helped his injured partner during a fire, he has no idea that she is really Shadowfox, an agent for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team, a top secret branch of Homeland Security hiding under the guises of LiFT EMS, who provide air and ambulance medical services in the area. The Foxtrot Team is also investigating the ALT, but neither agency knows about the other’s involvement.

Shanae is drawn to Mudflap’s good looks and charming personality. However, she has no interest in more than just having a casual fling. She works in a field dominated by men and based on her observations and limited personal experience, she has concluded that men only use women for sex. So, her motto is to do the same with men, without getting tangled up with emotional attachments. Her last relationship with a CIA agent, Seth, has also led her to believe men are controlling and jealous. Shanae is willful and independent, and she’s doesn’t think relationships work for her. Ironically, though, she can’t help but see true love is possible since her twin sister is happily married.

It was heartwarming and fun to watch Mudflap and Shanae’s relationship develop, and their periodic texting is witty, flirty, and heartfelt. Their online conversations and the sexual chemistry between the two are powerful factors in drawing them together, even though Shanae keeps trying to pull away.

Although Shanae does what she can to keep her distance, Mudflap digs in his heels and continues to tear down all the walls she has erected to secure her heart. He has that wonderful blend of Alpha and sweetness that is hard to resist. Mudflap isn’t overbearing or controlling, and he patiently gives her space while still letting her know that he wants her. The motorcycle is scene is my favorite where Mudflap’s alpha side emerges, and he bulldozes right through Shanae’s emotional defenses. Let’s just say, this is one hot scene, where a fire hose might be needed but certainly wouldn’t be welcomed. Mudflap and Shanae make a great couple, and I like that their relationship progresses over time and doesn’t overshadow the mystery and suspense in trying to stop the ALT’s plans.

This is a pretty quick read with a clear writing style and an engaging storyline that kept my interest. The authors do weave in some humorous situations involving Mudflap, a handgun, and naked people that lightened up the otherwise serious tone of the book. As you read the book, keep in mind that it’s dangerous to interfere with Texans and football.

I look forward to the next adventure with the Foxtrot Team.

First of all, it's impossible to not LOVE this book- and I don't even live in Texas. Well, I did once, we were stationed there in San Antonio. What did I learn during that time? Texans LOVE their football, their country and their Texas (not incidentally my oldest plans to go to UT Austin next year-Mudflap and Shanae would probably not appreciate that)

ANYWAY- This book has SO much going on.

A terrorist organization is threatening the way of life for the college town of Lubbock, Texas, and their football. The string of attacks has gained the attention of more than one federal agency, all of which seem to be under each other's radar.

First there's Shanae, a super spy whose cover is a first responder , except wait she really IS a first responder. Of course she's hot, strong, independent and don't worry she's totally got this whole terrorist thing covered. I love a kick ass heroine-have I mentioned that before? No doubt I have, but it's worth saying again.

Where was I? Oh yeah...Mudflap-yeah, that's really this guys name. Funny how after reading how hot he is, and getting into the story you don't even notice that it's strange anymore. He's hot, he's funny, he's a little alpha and a bit of cowboy thrown in too. Yum.

Forget it, I'm not going to tell you how he got the name, you're going to have to read the book!

Mudflap is a firefighter, but he's got a bit more up his sleeve. He spent 8 years as a sniper and the government figures they can use his skills to help catch the organization behind the attacks.

Much adventure, hijinx, sizzle, and suspense ensues-I'm not giving it up I tell you!! This I can promise- you will have a blast along the way. This book is written in alternating points of view and I swear I could hear them talking in my head! The text messaging, the football scores, and even the chapter titles are so original and fun. It also sets us up for a series as this writing team plans to write more in the series over the next few years.

Lastly, All the proceeds from this novel will go to the Lubbock Red Cross!!
ALL OF THEM!!
For 2.99 you not only get to do a good deed, you also get a great book!!

So go get your copy...like right now.

I have one thing to say about this book. No, wait. I have more than one thing. I have several things. One of them will likely revolve around Mudflap's unfortunate name. Poor guy. Another MIGHT revolve around how I fear ever traveling through Texas because (if I'm reading these Christi Snow books right) there's a terrorist lurking around every corner. On the other hand, Texas also seems to sport some mighty hunky looking men. And the ladies who can bring them to their knees.

I appreciate that.

So. Mudflap. Yes, that's his name. All things considered, he's surprisingly easy-going about being named after a part on a truck. He also has an immediate attraction to the lovely Shanae. Which, considering she has the same attraction, turns out to work well for the both of them. Things get tangled between Shanae's job as a super sexy spy and Mudflap's involvement in her current case. Wires get crossed, football players get flogged, COVERS NEARLY GET BLOWN! For the record, not all those things happen at once. Just so we're clear.

Meanwhile, at the Legion of Doom headquarters... just kidding. I'm not going to spill the beans on what happens. Just imagine secret codes, diabolical plots, and one character who I'm not sure should be trusted. Oh, and throw in some unexpected sexy times. Because those happen.

There are some nice threads laid out for future books (YAY!), unexpected revelations to fuel the future, and a satisfactory ending to the issue that Shanae and Mudflap are dealing with here. All in all, it was a fun, fast, sexy read!

What is there not to love about this book? Christi Snow is a talented author and has given me yet another Texas boy to swoon over. This time its Mudflap (yep, Mudflap) a sexy, tough firefighter.
I won't go much into the storyline as many other reviews have already. What I will say is if you've read any of Christi's When The Mission End series and enjoyed it you will love this one. As usual, she seamlessly blends edge of your seat suspense, surprising thrills and steamy romance into one heck of an enjoyable and exciting read with characters you'll fall in love with and be rooting for the whole time.
Heck she even throws a bit of football in there. I've never been much of a fan, but even those bits kept me interested. One of my favorite things about this book (as well as her others) is whole terrorism plot. Christi really REALLY has a talent for keeping you guessing when and how the villains of her stories are going to strike next and this one certainly delivers. I can't wait for the next one in this series. :)

Book Review- The Shadow of Mudflap by Christi Snow and M.F. Smith

Mudflap, and yes that is his real name, is a fire fighter in Lubbock, Texas. We meet him when he and his partner are responding to a fire and in the process save a couple of kids. Unfortunately after saving the kids, his partner gets trapped inside the burning building and almost dies. Shanae is an paramedic on the ambulance that takes Mudflap’s partner to the hospital. She keeps him alive until he gets to the hospital and handed off to the emergency medical team. They have instant chemistry and Mudflap wants her number. Shanae is ok with a bit more physical encounter. Mudflap wins that round. He is determined to date her.
However, Shanae is not exactly what she seems. She is an paramedic but she is under cover for LiFT, a governmental agency under the Homeland Security Agency. They are investigating an internal terrorist group that wants to liberate Texas. The fire that injured Madflap’s partner looks to be started by ALT. LiFt is now infiltrating Mudflap’s fire department and Shanae is supposed to stay close to Mudflap. This undercover work is not her favorite thing. Mudflap will probably think she used him, but in reality she really likes him.
Mudflap’s partner, Grant, was distracted during the fire by a gold coin. This distraction led to his being trapped in the building in the first place. Now an attempt has been made on his life while he lies unconscious in the hospital. Shanae has to dig deeper into her cover and find out what is really going on. The sooner the better, so she can keep Mudflap safe.
Mudflap finds himself recruited by the army to go undercover himself. He is now the new trainer for the Texas Tech Football Program. The same program his brother just became the head coach for. Things are heating up and the thoughts are that terrorists are going to hit a football game. Both Shanae and Mudflap have to help solve the case before anyone else gets hurt.

This story had a lot of likable characters. I like Shanae as she is a tough undercover agent and plays with the big boys. I also like how the story is divided into parts that cover each of their storylines when they aren’t together. The author will write about Mudflap and then switch to Shanae with a clear separation. This makes the story easy to follow. When they both are considered undercover, it is fun to watch them try and maintain it. The reader goes along for the ride. The intrigue and investigating parts of the story are very interesting and well written. The author even threw a bit of football in to make the story’s setting of Texas extremely believable. I would definitely recommend this book. I would give it a 4 out of 5.

Another wonderful read by talented author Christi Snow. I loved The Shadow of Mudflap, and eagerly await future instalments. I was so pleased to be a part of something that this book has been fundraise for too. Congratulations M.F. Smith and Christi Snow for your admirable passion.

Mudflap was a wonderful Hero. Gorgeous, thoughtful, cocky, yet humble, he was easy to love. He struggled with guilt. It plagued him and contributed to self-doubt. Especially when confronted with keeping his brother out of harm's way. Especially when he'd found a woman to love; a woman who was also in danger.

Men served one purpose for tough-chick, Shanae. Previous hurt had paved each brick of the wall of safety surrounding her heart. Her job was dangerous. She was feisty, funny and lethal. After all, she was a spy!
She'd never had such a visceral response to a man before meeting Mudflap. He oozed testosterone and sexiness, that she found too hard to ignore. The connection she felt with him scared her, but also exhilarated her.

Christi Snow knows how to get your heart rate up. I love her writing. Not only does she cover serious, danger with appropriate, meticulous detail, but also with an intensity that keeps you captivated.
Her writing is intense, and it sizzles. Like this scene.
"He was thick and hard, stretching her just to the edge of pain as he thrust into her. Already her climax was so close. Several thrusts later, her internal muscles began to ripple and contract in growing ecstasy."

Just as beautifully, she sprinkles her work with humor, always at the right time to provide needed levity.

Written with alternating points of view, it was a wonderful way to stay close to the characters and their struggles, joys and hornyness!! (is that a word??)

There is something to be said for text messages in a novel. Snow uses them brilliantly to walk the reader through the burgeoning relationship of Mudflap & Shanae. The focus on Texas and their love of football, in the midst of a terrorist organisation which threatened the safety and security of college life in Lubbock, Texas, was skillfully juggled.

Mudflap was a great read from start to finish. It will keep you captivated if you enjoy a bit of spy/action/romance with strong characters, inspiring credible plot, and have a good sense of fun as well. I can't wait to see what this new writing duo create next.

Thank you Christi Snow for the ARC of Mudflap in return of an honest review.

CHRISTI knows how to show off the SEXY and THRILLs of TEXAS and make them shine. She is well on her way to being THE writer for this niche of your bookcase. Her WHEN THE MISSION ENDS series well established what I expect. Strong women. Alpha men in Uniform with a sweet spot for strong women. Family and Friends come first. Sexy with a great storyline and build up. Action-packed thrills. THE SHADOW OF MUDFLAP delivers all of the above.

MUDFLAP is our hometown boy man with skills. I’m picturing something very Gerard Butler-esque. Someone Shanae can’t help but be drawn to, despite her 3-date-and-your-gone policy. I fell in love with their back-and-forth texting while he pursued and she tried to fight it. But there is nothing like an Alliance to Liberate Texas plot, to throw them together in all their awesome and glory. Will they survive each other, much less the bad guys?

I love my state. Texas is big and awesome. But we have some CRAZY. The Alliance to Liberate Texas will stop at nothing to see their goals achieved–succession. Even endangering all things sacred, Texas Football is a potential target. Unfortunately for them, they never anticipated the loyalty, fierceness, and fight of Lubbock, Texas. Where they may or may not agree with the CRAZY, they are UNITED when it comes to their own. Protecting their family, friends, and their FOOTBALL. CHRISTI doesn’t skimp on the ride or the thrills and definitely leaves us wanting more, more, more.

You can really tell that CHRISTI is writing about things she loves. You can tell that Lubbock, Texas Tech and first responders hold a special place in her heart. I know I’m highlighting CHRISTI SNOW, because her work is what I’m familiar with. But she co-wrote this with M. F. SMITH, a local Lubbock radio personality. You can read more about their process of working on the project together PLUS who CHRISTI pictured while writing on her website, link above.

The terrorist picked the wrong target…Texas Football.

I had an absolute blast reading this book, and for several reasons. I’m thrilled to be involved in helping to spread the word about this book: all proceeds and from sale of this book go to the Lubbock Red Cross. AND, the book is just plain fun to read! The story is sexy and exciting, just like it’s lovable hero and heroine. Mystery, humor, and great big dash of Texas charm round out this entertaining read.

There’s multiple layers to this fast-paced and action packed story. There’s romance, intrigue, and a football championship that hangs in the balance. I’m a football fan, so this added a fun angle to the story, but if you’re not, don’t be put off, it doesn’t overwhelm the plot. The plot has tons of twists and turns; I was constantly surprised and kept guessing by this engaging story filled with secret military ops and potential terrorist plots.

I was totally taken in by Mudflap and Shanae’s romance. They are both fantastic characters: funny and bad-ass, both are hard-working first responders, and he’s a military sniper and she’s a secret agent! Together, their chemistry sizzles. Their relationship is hot, fun, flirty, and potentially dangerous for them both. But, this meant to be couple just can’t stay away from each other, and I didn’t want them to.

I highly recommend this fantastic read that has excitement and intrigue, romance and heat. It’s a must read for fans of contemporary romance with elements of suspense, strong heroines, and sweet, sexy, charming alpha-male heroes.

“Brushing a tight kiss across the top of her head, he whispered, ‘Trust me.’

Butterflies danced down her spine at the whisper of his breath on her forehead. Just that slight glance of his lips and she was ready to melt in a puddle at his feet. Even though her highly trained head told her to be on alert, her heart already trusted him completely. Not a good position for a spy to find herself in.”

I received The Shadow of Mudflap in exchange for a fair and honest review.

4 1/2 Star Review

It didn’t surprise me at all that I finished this one in practically one sitting – and not just because it was fairly short. (150-200 pages is not a long book for me.) It’s basically because Christi Snow’s books always demand to be read from start to finish. They tend to grab you from the beginning and don’t let go. The Shadow of Mudflap was definitely not an exception.

Mudflap was the first to be introduced and it was an intense introduction. Life or death as a matter of fact. Those opening scenes pretty much set the pace for this book. They also gave readers a pretty good sense of Mudflap’s personality. He was loyal, heroic and he couldn’t accept failure – especially when lives were at stake. Pretty much the personality traits of most first responders.

I liked Shanae from the beginning too. She was strong, brave, independent and pulled no punches. She also possessed the perfect combination of intelligence and wit. I understood her reluctance to fall for Mudflap, but from the time they met readers knew it was inevitable. Sparks flew between them from the start and didn’t let up.

This was a story full of intrigue, danger, interesting characters, loyalty, humor and plenty of smexy – the usual balance in a Christi Snow read. I loved the twists and turns. (Incidentally, this author has also turned Texas into a very dangerous and interesting place.) It kept the pages turning and left me wanting more. *sigh* About my only complaint with The Shadow of Mudflap is that I have to wait until August of 2014 for the next installment in the Foxtrot Team series. I have no doubt that Mudflap Undercover will be well worth the wait.

This is a cute book. The "halftime texting", the jokes between Mudflap and Shanae. The Texans and their fanatism about college football... I'm from Oklahoma, where it's the same. OSU vs OU. So I got a chuckle out that too.

The hero is a nice guy--not an Alpha butt wipe. I like this. He doesn't have to establish dominance constantly--not that he could dominate this heroine anyway.

Shanae is a ball-buster. She takes no grief from anyone. She carries weapons on her person even at the golf course. She sees what she wants and she takes it. And oh! She rides a motorcycle!

These two connect and end up undercover for different secret branches and the mystery all connects somehow to college football. That's all I'll say about that.

It's an enjoyable, very fast paced read. My only quibbles are that, one, Shanae and Mudflap were ready to get into each other's pants WAY too fast, like mere hours after meeting. That was a bit crazy. I mean, I could see it if those few hours were spent in deep discussion and getting-to-know-each-otherness, but it wasn't. Two, the thing with the coins was kind of confusing to me. I'm still not sure I completely understand.

But this was a nice start to what promises to be a good series for those who like romantic suspense with a dash of humor.

Christi does know how to create mayhem in town, Texas always suffer with her attack, but it does makes for better books. It’s always impressive how she can destroy the town she loves, but she makes good stuff with her heroes and this time it wasn’t different. Despise the fact Mudflap is a really strange name, the character is actually a nice fellow. I liked the fact he has some training from his time in the army and that after all those years, he decide to help people after leaving the Army.

Shanae is like Wonder Woman and she does have superpowers, especially with her seduction, but thing I did not understand was her ex acting like a stalker in the book, weird stuff. But Shanae is a nice girl and I liked the fact she’s a spy and a very good one. Mudflap was deceive for a little time, but he picked up real fast. Of course these two made the perfect time, because Mudflap has some training and Shanae is deadly, but we can see during their moments together that these two have some chemistry and really deserve to find some happiness.

I liked the fact Mudflap understands Shanae job and even trust her, that was the best part for me, because we can clearly see this is the important stuff for her. This a shorter novel and I read in one sitting, but the story is full of action, can’t wait for more Foxtrot investigations.

Mudflap Davidson wakes up thinking today is just like any day as a fire fighter. That is until he gets the call that lands his partner in ICU, meets the woman that can knock him on his ass, and finds out he just got involved in something that he never saw coming. Mudflap's about to get tossed into a world of secret forces with hidden agendas, government agencies that technically don't exist, and people all around him leading double lives.

The Shadow of Mudflap was a blast to read, very fast paced and detailed without bombarding you. Mudflap and Shanae were great characters, well developed, and very relatable. It was nice to read characters who were comfortable in who they are. While neither was perfect we didn't spend chapters reading about their issues and past transgressions, they showed their flaws and did the best with them. That's not to say we didn't get a history on both characters, it just wasn't embellished to the point of outrageousness.

The story was edgy and gave you a look into first responders that made you feel like you were really along for the ride. I never guessed the ending, which was a nice treat for an active reader. All in all a very promising start to a suspense series

We received this book for a honest review. At first I looked at it and went meh… Mudflap? So I thought it would be some book about some sleepy town hero for stuff that well… I dunno. And then I saw it’s proceedings would go to Lubbock Red Cross, so I went ok, I will read it, for a good cause. And then I was blown away! So first off, sorry to the writers to be a stuck up … well you know.

Back to the book. They really pulled off a normal town pulled in a James Bond meets Die Hard feel. The good Die Hard mind you. I was captivated and still felt like it was normal, football crazed town from anywhere. The love story was awesome too. No sugarcoating but nothing too harsh either. The more pages I turned, the more exited I got. It was action-packed with a sprinkling of romance. Made me wonder how a real hero does it in real life. But to be brief: buy this book. For real, you will not be sorry.his!book!

I have read quite a few books over the years that were written by more than 1 author. Very few of those books are written so smoothly that you cannot tell which author wrote which part....The Shadow of Mudflap is one of those very few books! This book was fantastic! Smoothly written, characters & storyline well developed, and can we say hot?!
Action, adventure, love, HEA, whodunnit...The Shadow of Mudflap has it all! Let's not forget that the authors are also donating the proceeds of this book to the Lubbock Red Cross...how cool is that?? You purchase & get read a great book & do your share of helping out all at the same time! I have a feeling there will be more from these two and from Mudflap in the future and personally I can't wait!

Oh dear, I like Christi Snow (or at least I thought I did) but I hesitated over buying this because I hated the cover AND the title. But, I thought, what could be so bad?

First, I never got over loathing the hero's name - Mudflap? I mean really?

Second, I've got to say that this was neither a romance nor a suspense/thriller. Instead it seemed to miss both marks.

Shanae (yet another dreadful name) is supposed to be some legendary kick-ass undercover agent - they all have stupid fox names, don't even get me started on the juvenile nature of that storyline - yet we see her doing ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING! She might as well just be a medic for all her special skills we see.

Her ex is borderline stalking her (breaking into the home of a woman who broke up with you nine months ago is not ok!)but she forgives him because he cares - sheesh!

At the end of each chapter is a football score - why? Your guess is as good as mine because honestly we don't 'see' a single game.

I have no idea why Mudflap and Shanae (my teeth are grating just typing those names)fell in lurve as they don't appear to have spoken more than once or twice before they plaster their bodies all over each other as if they were magnetically attracted to one another.

Really disappointing

More like 3.5 stars. It wasn't amazing, but it was good enough that I can't wait to read the next book.
