GWYCH!!... Fabulous... I read the last in the series fof 8 books first (without knowing) and then I read this... the first one. Even though each can be read individually... I prefer to follow sequence as there is a backstory for sure. I have read up to book 5 now Dan Gwmwl Du ... and they are all excellent. Da iawn wir!! oh yes... you need to be able to read Welsh!! ;-) Da iawn JAG!

Twyll, llwgrwobryo a thrais ynghlwm ag adeiladu marina. Gwynfor Jones y cynghorydd tywyllodrus sydd yn benderfynol o elwa o adeiladu’r marina, ond mae o allan o’i ddyfnder heb sylweddoli hynny. A dyna gychwyn yn unig ar bethau, a Meurig Morgan druan yn cael ei hun yng nghanol yr helynt i geisio datrys pooeth. Darllenadwy iawn

Found it difficult to get into this but once I did I wanted to see how the story would work out. It's about corruption in local government (something not unknown in Wales of course, although this is, naturally, a work of fiction, &c. &c.). It's a bit uneven to begin with - much emphasis on the older of two brothers, who then vanishes from the story for a long time (but the loose ends are all tied up in the end). I wasn't entirely convinced by the relationship of the brothers and how one benefited at the expense of the other, but no doubt such things do happen. Where the story took off for me was how the fraud was planned and how it evolved over time, and how and why people who didn't set out to do anything corrupt got sucked in. The author was previously in charge of the fraud section of North Wales police. Trying not to draw my own conclusions about how much of it is fiction! The denouement was a bit surprising - mainly left in the hands of the amateurs rather than the police - but I loved the use of the Snowdon Mountain Railway! One or two places where one half of the quotation marks is missing, which is a bit confusing, but that's a minor editorial quibble. Lots of food for thought about the developments and projects which we have all seen happening, and in some cases stalling, across Wales and beyond.
