Threatened by invasion from the Krieger, Eardesha’s military trains convicted criminals into a brutal and disposable army. Gabrielle and Faith discover a power the Gods have kept secret for thousands of years, a secret that would change the future of Eardesha, and use it to stop the war.
Earth Angel is one of those books that you will either really enjoy or dislike right off the bat. Fortunately for me it happened to be a book I really enjoyed. There are a lot of characters, set in a lot of different places, it is a fantasy world so new rules apply. It is hard to see in the beginning how all these different characters will come together by the end of the book, but know that they will and when they do a lot of the questions will be answered. At first we meet Gabrielle and her brother Oz who are in a prison called Khartaz. This is the prison that holds the worse of the worse. It is located in the middle of the desert where everyone prays for rain, but knows the Gods will not hear them. Gabrielle and her brother Oz have a friend name Jess. These three characters are important. Gabrielle wants to escape and manages to talk everyone else to go along with it. The first chapter alone is filled with heartache, pain, anger, laughter, and regret. It sweeps you away into the lives of these prisoners making you hopeful for their success in this foolish plan of escape and yet dreadful because you know deep down that it may not happen. From them we switch to Zenovia and orphan desperate to find her parents. This orphan runs into an Earth Angel named Faith and her companion Orlando. This story is the one that helps us to answer some major questions. Like what are Earth Angels, what really happened in the desert, who is the Gods, and what are their roles. From this chapter we move on with the story and we start to get a glimpse of what we might be in for. This story takes us from one group to another the whole time we are meeting hybrids (half human half whatever animal they are mixed with) we are learning more about the religion, the culture, and the ultimate story. This is a fast pace, action filled story that moves seamlessly from one story arc into the next story arc while at the same time moving along in a well pace manner. I really didn’t find any spot that was too confusing and by the end all my questions were answered. I would like to know more about he dragon race as well as what happens now to the Earth Angels. Not to mention more history on them would be good as in how many Gods are there? And is there an Angel for each God? I would also like to see how the Orlando story line wraps up plus what the future has in store for Gabrielle. The story did have a well written ending and wraps up nicely without any major cliff hangers. There is also a great battle scene at the end that was very engaging and did help to sympathize a little more with some of the characters I just couldn’t relate to. That being said it almost feels as if the author left just enough questions for us to demand or request a sequel. I have no idea if one is in the works or not, but I will be one of those people picking it up should there be another one.
Earth Angel is a well paced story. With an intriguing array of characters, each has there own history and personlity. I became totally engrossed in the story of their lives and relationships. I,m looking forward to reading more books by this author Ruth Ellen Parlour
Earth Angel is the first novel by UK author Ruth Ellen Parlour. This high fantasy novel, aimed at young adults, is set in a world completely unlike our own. The Earth Angels, serving their gods, fight to protect Eardesha in a world filled with many familiar fantasy creatures—like dragons—and many unfamiliar ones as well, including hybrids—human-animal crosses—and the monstrous Krieger. Earth Angels is the first in a series.
Gabrielle is imprisoned in sinister Khartaz prison, along with her brother, Oz. Desperate to escape the horrors of life there, she and her brother plot their escape, only to face the monsters in the surrounding desert that snatch their friends away one by one. Faith is an Earth Angel intent on reuniting with her lover, whom she left behind, and questioning the meaning of her calling. Zenovia is an orphan who only wants to find her parents, a search that will take her places she never dreamed of.
When an army of the vicious Krieger invades Eardesha with a dark power that threatens to destroy the entire land, the military turns Khartaz prison into a training ground for the convicts in the hope of stalling the destruction. Gabrielle finds herself drawn back to the prison against her will, called by the gods to help her people. Together with Faith, she will uncover a secret the gods have kept hidden for thousands of year, and race to stop the Krieger from destroying Eardesha forever.
Filled with varied landscapes and vivid creatures, Earth Angel is an intriguing first novel set in a fascinating world. The characters are well written and colorful, and the relationships between them bring the story to life. The pages are filled with action and adventure, and will keep the reader racing to find out what happens.
Parlour's debut novel takes place in the rich world of Eardesha and follows the fortunes and misfortunes of three sets of characters:
Gabrielle and Oz, sibling convicts who manage to escape the harsh desert prison of Khartaz; The friends they left behind: Emz, Dogga, Jess and Jewelz; And the orphan Zenovia, who goes on a journey with Faith–the Earth Angel–and Orlando–an ex soldier–to find out about her parents.
With such a busy cast, you might be forgiven for thinking that the novel would get confusing. You'd be wrong. Parlour skilfully balances each of the three main story-lines, allowing plenty of time within the narrative to get to know the characters' pasts, desires and hopes. I found myself eagerly turning the "pages" to find out what would happen to each group of characters. The world of Eardesha is well defined, with a mixture of races. Some of these–such as dragons–are common in fantasy, whereas others are fresh and new. The hybrids are particularly interesting, as are the invading Krieger. Every part of the world that is encountered within the novel is beautifully described with rich detail that makes Eardesha and its inhabitants come to life. Indeed, the vivid description in 'Earth Angel' is one of the novel's strongest points.
'Earth Angel' is an epic, entertaining, fast paced read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, 'Godslayer', when it is released.
This story hooked me from the start. I loved the characters - such great imagination - and how the fast-paced plot was a masterpiece in storytelling.
The only criticism would be about the errors - but being an author, I understand completely how difficult it is to catch those naughty gremlins - it did not spoil the story, but it would benefit from an overhaul.
I thought some of the lines /descriptions were rich and original - absolutely wonderful.
I don't give spoilers but will say that this book is definitely worth reading for fantasy and adventure fans - and those who love a well told tale.
As a new reader to Ruth's work, I was a little nervous about reading a fantasy book but I needn't have worried :). Once I got into the story I found the book thrilling and exciting and very descriptive which helped me to understand each character and their role. Very well written and I look forward to reading more of Ruth's work.
The writing here was great and somewhat tranquilizing. I found myself very relaxed while reading it. It definitely got me cover to cover. The descriptions were very vivid and the characters amusing. I think fans of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones would enjoy this.
