Kat is living the dream on her father’s ranch, training horses, which she is particularly good at. She’s a little strong willed and possibly torn between her cousin, Pierce with whom she is often at loggerheads and her boyfriend Jake.

But when a stranger pitches up at the ranch with veiled threats and shocking news about Kat’s past it is Pierce that she turns to, and his sister Lauren — Kat’s best friend — for help and they go to Chicago to seek the truth.

In Chicago Kat glimpses a woman, Caitlyn, who looks exactly like her. And when the only man who can tell Kat everything is murdered in his apartment, Kat sees Caitlyn, and Caitlyn’s half brother Dorian in the vicinity. Dorian becomes the Chicago police’s prime suspect. They soon discover that the murdered man also has connections to Pierce’s father. Pierce goes against his father’s wishes to help Kat investigate the mystery of her past. Against a backdrop of murder and intrigue in which Kat herself becomes the target, now that it transpires that Kat is not his cousin, Pierce’s true feelings for her come to the surface.

This was a brilliant page turning thriller as well as an intriguing romance. Clues were skillfully drip fed into the story in such a way that kept you guessing right up to the last minute. I would highly recommend this book to any romance readers, even teens because it was nice and clean.

Mirror Deep By Joss Landry
This book is a great mystery thriller that gets the blood pumping and keeps the twists turning each page with trembling fingers.
Kat has led a privileged life on her family ranch training horses for show jumping. But her life is thrown into disarray when a stranger visits the ranch with veiled threats. She learns she was illegally adopted using a baby broker. Now Kat must find out her heritage. She travels to Chicago with her friend to meet the one man who knows everything, but he is brutally murdered. Her friend is almost killed drinking poison meant for Kat.
Kat toughs it out and meets other members of her long unknown family and a woman who is her exact double. Who is she? Kat can’t go it alone and enlists the help of her second cousin, the handsome Pierce who secretly loves her. But Pierce has his own motives – to keep the law away from his lawyer father who is involved in the illegal adoption. They are soon engrossed in solving the mystery of Kat’s heritage and why she is the target of a serial killer bent on stopping her discovering the truth. Along the way she discovers her true feelings for her second cousin, but the family closeness has kept her from going further.
Can Kat stay alive long enough to rope Pierce in and solve the mystery of her stolen life? This book has it all, the majestic beauty of horses, heart-stopping romance, murderous thrills and pure enjoyment that kept this reader enthralled to the last page. This is highly recommended for thrill-seekers of 5 star murder mysteries.

If you are looking for a thrilling , head twisting, intriguing, suspenseful off-beat romance with a hint of paranormal to it, then you've found Mirror Deep.

Katherine "Kat" Bonner is a twenty something independent woman who loves who she is and where she comes from. She loves her parents, her horses, her best friend/cousin Lauren and even Lauren's obnoxious brother Pierce. She has all that she could ever ask for. Until one day a stranger in a suit shows up and blows a huge cover wide open about her parents past.

Faced with a past she never knew existed, Kat, along with her cousins, travel to Chicago where the mysteries begin to unravel and pieces to a broken puzzle start to take shape. Feelings Kat never knew existed rise to the surface and loyalties are tested.

Mirror Deep is one of those books that if I had one day of peace and quiet to myself, I could easily read it all day. The way the story is written kept me interested and the plot kept thickening. It is an easy read and gives you different perspectives through out the book. The scenes are beautifully written and allowed me to visualize alot of what was going on and how it played out. Full of twists and turns, Mirror Deep is a great read and I would recommend it to all.

Telling A Story Through Great Dialog And Beautiful Scenery

Joss Landry is a word master for descriptions and showing the story through the actions and dialog of great characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, her mystery unveiling itself as I whipped through the pages to learn more about these folks. Mirror Deep is a sweet love tale, a great old fashioned mystery with a good pace.

If you find yourself next to a fire on a rainy night, I can’t think of better entertainment than to delve into the lives of Kat and Pierce… and family secrets that are about to blow their top wide open.

Landry is an author to keep your eye on, a definite winner.

A mystery well worth reading! This book is full of romance, tension, and mystery. Kat is basically a horse whisperer. She knows ways to get horses to calm down and take to their training with very little effort on her part. This is due to having grown up on a horse farm and taking part in the training classes, dressage events, and pretty much everything else you can imagine a place like that would have. The only thing she didn't really have a part in was the paperwork that kept the place running. Her parents raised her to be one with the horses. However, her life is twisted out of her control. She finds out that she is adopted and sadly, her birth mother has just passed away. In an attempt to connect with her real family, Kat is thrust into several murder investigations. She becomes a target herself, but no one knows why because until recently no one even knew that she existed. I mean that to mean that no record of her birth was kept on file and her adoption was so private that even the lawyer involved happens to be her "uncle."

I loved how the characters interacted with one another and how sweet the romance blossomed within the story. Everything felt very real and I felt like I knew the characters well enough to not only understand their actions, but sometimes predict them as well. I don't always like mysteries because I tend to figure out "who dunnit" before I am even halfway through the book. That is not the case with this one. I don't think I figured it out until I was about 90% through the story. I loved everything about this book.

I love a good romance and I love a good mystery. Joss Landry delivered both in Mirror Deep. The book has a wild plot that just keeps thickening. As I was reading I would think I knew what was coming, only to have something else make me suddenly doubt myself. It was a definite page turner as I tried to find out all the answers.

I enjoyed the characters quite a lot. Kat is sassy, caring, and mostly optimistic. This book mostly centers on her journey, and I liked reading it. I found myself invested in what would happen to her. There were so many other characters throughout the book. I loved reading Pierce’s parts. He was such a sweet guy, and so busy trying to protect Kat. By far, my favorite character was Charles. He was a spunky old man.

I really enjoyed the story line of Mirror Deep. Kat learns some news that makes her feel like her world is falling apart; add in mysterious deaths, people lurking about, and a few possible love interests and Joss Landry has done an amazing job. Oh, and the horses. You cannot forget the beautiful horses. I loved how unpredictable the mystery was and the ending was perfect. I think that lovers of mystery and romance alike will enjoy reading Mirror Deep.

I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

Mirror Deep is a fast-paced action-packed mystery, set against an Equestrian Sport backdrop. When a family secret throws Kat Bonner’s life off balance, the intrigue begins, and her relationship with childhood friend, Pierce, deepens.

The story engaged me from beginning to end. The characters are well written, the dialogue is lively and realistic and the chemistry between Kat and Pierce is palpable. The plot’s twists and turns had me tearing through the pages, staying up late to find out what was going to happen next.

I will be watching for anything from Joss Landry. She writes with a lot of heart, and I’m hooked!

Great story, this book engaged me throughout. When Kat finds out that her life has been a lie, then a mystery begins to unfold. Kat travels from her secure home on the ranch, to Chicago. Her visit to the city soon becomes an eventful rollercoaster ride, and Kat turns to Pierce, not Jake, for help. The book has believable characters like Pierce,Lauren and Dorian. A well written and fast paced story. Recommended mustread!

Mirror Deep

By Joss Landry

Review by Barbara Bamberger Scott

“Knowing where you’re from doesn’t change who you are.” Or does it? For Kat Bonner, this is the burning question that will drag her halfway across the globe. Who is she? And where did she come from? And how did she get mixed up with a serial killer?

In the opening chapters of Joss Landry’s novel, we see Kat safely at home, at work with the show horses she loves, training new riders and fending off the sarcasm of her second cousin, Pierce, a cowboy with smarts who, it looks like, will someday share the running of her parent’s ranch with her. She has a reliable boyfriend named Jake, a job, a place in the universe – until a mystery visitor arrives and her universe is upended. Suddenly she’s somebody else – an adopted child; her birth mother, who has just died, may have sold her as a baby; and her adoptive parents. whom she’s always loved as her real mother and father, are urging her to go to this strange woman’s funeral. They’ve even enlisted the arrogant Pierce to help do the convincing, though Pierce secretly realizes that Kat, unlike the Andalusian steeds she works with, is anything but tame.

Landry swiftly builds the framework for a complex story that carries Kat away from her beloved ranch home to the big city where someone tries to poison her companion, Pierce’s sister Lauren, leaving Kat to try to figure out why. Pierce steps in and though they keep their emotional distance, they find they can work together in a good cause: to protect Kat’s physical safety, on a very immediate basis, and find out not just who she is but who her real family is, including the charming but debonair Dorian, and the ghostly, elusive beauty who looks eerily like Kat, and who always seems to visit her when no one else is around.

There’s a fresh twist on almost every page of this well-crafted tale. Landry is comfortable with dialogue, settings (the peaceful ranch, to the mean streets of Chicago, to Paris, and back), and above all, her heroine, Kat, and Kat’s feelings: frustration, fear, even a tinge of depression as she fights to understand the sudden alteration to her life, and again, a slowly growing love tinged with anger and a generous helping of lust for the aggravating Pierce. With his no nonsense approach to problems and his fearlessness in the face of danger, Pierce turns out to be the best possible sidekick she can have as she plunges ahead, determined to unravel her personal history. We can guess that Pierce will win fair lady, because his heart is never faint; he tells Kat he’s always known she loved him: “I just didn’t know how long it would take you to come around.”

Many readers will take this all in and think, “Movie!” Mirror Deep definitely has the breadth and depth for the big screen.

"Mirror Deep is a riveting tale, and you'll never guess whodunit, but you'll root for Kat and Pierce the whole way through."

Amy Metz, author of MURDER AND MAYHEM IN GOOSE PIMPLE JUNCTION - Iconic Publishing

OVERVIEW;

Kat Bonner's world is full of danger and romance. It rolls like a storm through the horse whisperer's world; when a known felon arrives at the ranch and drops a bomb on her. A bomb about her past. The one person she turns to is Pierce; a child hood friend, the one who goes against her every chance he gets. His investigating lands them in jail and with a serial killer right behind them.

The story grabs you from the start. Then it holds on to you till the end. The author, Joss Landry wrote a story where the characters are true to life, well written and the relationship between Pierce and Kat is very likable. Pierce, well Pierce is one of those cowboys that you can just drool over. They have this relationship which is rather interesting. There are so many twists and turns, ups and downs that you can't turn those pages fast enough. It is very fast pace, filled with lots of action and you just can't put it down. You're faced with relationships, mystery, suspense and a serial killer. This forms a read that you're stuck to, you can't let go.

This book is definitely a keeper. You'll want to read it again and again. I'd recommend MIRROR DEEP by Jos Landry to anyone and everyone. If you like romance, danger and suspense with much more added, you'll love MIRROR DEEP.

Twists, shocks, a fab page-turner

To me, as a reader, there’s nothing more important than a dose of reality in a book. Even though books cover a period of hyperreality, I like to feel it’s possible. And that’s something that Joss Landry managed to do in her novel, Mirror Deep. Not only did she keep me engrossed from start to finish; so much so that when life got in the way and I had to stop reading, I sulked! But also, I liked her style, the characters and the backdrop.
I’ve read a few stories with horse stables as the backdrop, but never one with murder and intrigue. The soft yet strong, elegant but powerful creatures and the equestrian events that Landry details are just the perfect interlude from murder and mayhem.
The story centres around Kat; at first, she seems a bit of a spoilt rich kid as well as a horse whisperer. Then we have Pierce, Kat’s second-cousin; slightly arrogant, very handsome but at heart, a good guy. Kat’s life tumbles to a halt when she learns she’s adopted and while Landry handled the despair and confusion of someone learning such a fact about themselves with great care, I liked how it was all turbo-charged. Murder, mischief and chaos ensue, enough so that you don’t really have a clue as to the real culprit and with all these doppelgangers roaming around, you have to wonder if there was some kind of genetic experiment going on at the time lol. But the result is far from far-fetched and again, exciting to read.
The characters aren’t empty air-heads and while there are quite a few, Landry makes them all real. Like-able and dislike-able. And Kat is so down to earth that you can’t help but feel for her and I don’t always empathize with characters; but I could with Kat and Pierce too. Especially the latter’s dilemma in regards to his own family and protecting those in his circle.
I like how real she made it feel; how possible it all was (even if it is improbable. Although in today’s society, who knows?!) All in all, a jolly good read. Would recommend easily. 5 stars.

Mirror Deep had me captivated from the start with the woman that was Kat Bonner. Kat is amazing with the horses on her family’s ranch. her boyfriend that she has named Jake is the epitimy of a cowboy. Then when an unlikely visitor comes haunting from her family’s history she finds out that all the similarities that she has been putting together between her and her parents were a fake because she was adopted! She immediately feels like she has been lied to and wants to dig and find the truth about where her mother is and what really happened between her and the lawyer that had come calling. Kat makes her way to Chicago to her mother’s funeral where she is supposed to be meeting with the lawyer. She travels with who she thought was first her cousin, but now is not, and while she is out makes connections to her stepbrother and she sees who she thinks may be her halfsister at the funeral. It is like looking in the mirror for her. SO much happens in the mystery that unravels.

This book is full of murder, mystery, suspense, and romance. The characters in this story are so real in what they are going through. Kat is so headstrong and is torn now between Pierce and Jake. There are love triangles and secrets amuck. Pierce is handsome, stubborn, smart, and comfortable with who he is. I was not even sure who to be routing for or who would make Kat happier as I was reading through the book. Once she figures out that she is adopted her world is a totally changed place.

Joss Landry has written an incredible story of twists, turns, and mystery that will have you wanting to know what becomes of Kat and her family next. I loved that the book had romance as well as mystery (murder mystery at that). It kept the mood lighter than a normal mystery and suspense story. I give it FIVE stars up because I could not put it down. I wanted to know…..simply I wanted answers to love and mystery of Kat.

Disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book for my open and honest opinion.

Mirror Deep, a Romance Mystery by Joss Landry, is the story of Katherine Bonner, the young daughter of a horse trainer, who discovers that she has been adopted. Having learned the secret from her parents, after the lawyer handling the adoption requested Kat’s presence at the funeral of her now dead biological mother. She is to meet with the family privately but things quickly get out of control. Murder and intrigue result. Before she can learn the truth people start dying around her. Is it murder, accident or simply coincidence? If murder, who did it? There is an obvious suspect, but is he guilty of anything?

Joss Landry weaves an intricate plot that steers the reader in different directions, making one ask who’s lying? The chief protagonists in the story are Katherine Bonner and her second cousin, Pierce. The reader gets the impression that there is a budding love affair brewing, even though each are seeing other people. It is the plot of the story that brings them together; but will this simmering relationship blossom into something serious? The reader will be suspense-bound as Joss begins unraveling the story over some four hundred fifty pages.

I love the way Joss Landry interleaves narrative and dialog. The reader is allowed inside the head of the characters and the dialog brings out their personalities in a salient way. The story is told in third person with new characters periodically introduced to add vitality to the plot.

If there is any criticism of the book it is that it comes out as a feel-good romance that may be a little too sweet and sanguine for a book that is also a murder mystery. Nevertheless, it is an excellent novel sure to captivate the reader. Three more works are due out in the near future and I’m sure the reader will look forward to them.

I really liked this book. From the moment I started reading the book, I was intrigued by the story. I was always captured by the suspense and I wanted to continue reading every time to know what was going to happen. I even think I took too long to finish the book.

The story tells about Katherine Bonner who has a happy life with her horses and family, until the day Victor Horn appears. Apparently she was adopted by her parents whom she knew her whole life. Her real mother has passed away and she has to go to the funeral to meet the family. Eventually she doesn't meet the family at the funeral, but she did get to know Caitlyn who is like two peas in a pot like her. Since she knows that she's adopted, strange things are happening. Who is Caitlyn? How did her mother died? And how does her relationship with Pierce evolves, now they know they're not related?

Like I said, I liked the story. There was a lot of suspense, which made me every time curious to continue the reading. The writer knows how to set up the suspense and how to intrigue the reader. I only have one negative comment. I think there are a lot of characters in the book. I didn't have a problem to distinguish the most important characters of the story, but I did have problems to distinguish the less important characters. I tended to confuse them.

I got the book in return to write an honest review.

I love a good mystery, especially one that keeps me on my toes and constantly guessing. Throw in a little paranormal activity for good measure and you have a really fun, intriguing read.

I liked Kat and Pierce from the get go and even though this book all about the mystery, it has some good family elements and a sweet romance too and let's not forget the horses! I love that this had sort of a down home country feel to it as well as a very modern feel, in fact, at first I wasn't quite sure if this was a modern read or if it was set in earlier times it just has that sort of feel to it.

This was expertly done with foreshadowing and clues dropped subtly along the way of who the culprit was and why they did what they did.

I loved the tension and friendship between Kat and Pierce and the fact that even though they are both adults they both still had their parents very much present and accounted for in their lives (sometimes not always a good thing however). I am always up for a good romance that is based first on mutual respect and friendship and the mystery element was really just an added bonus that keep me guessing and turning the pages.

This was an enjoyable read that I really think anyone that loves both romance and mystery (or even one or the other) will enjoy.

This gripping mystery was a joy to read, and the equestrian aspect of the book just added to it. For the most part. Because being a horse trainer, I find myself doing the typical flaw pointing that I do when I watch movies. But I know that there are many training techniques among horse people, and I can be a reader – just a reader. Luckily for me, this book does a fantastic job of engrossing me so much in a story that I forget any minor issues with horsemanship.

Romance and mystery were the pillars of this story. The who-dun-it is masterfully done so that clues were dropped appropriately through the story without letting the cat out of the bag until the author was ready to reveal. Then it all makes sense. A complex romance like the one in this book is the sort that I enjoy. You won’t find insta-love here, but characters who had known each other for their whole lives – through ups and downs, and find out that the best kind of love starts with friendship.

This book is highly recommended for lovers of mystery or romantic suspense.

"Mirror Deep" by Joss Landry is a great thriller set in parts on a horse ranch in Illinois, run by the rich and privileged Bonner family.
The idyllic life turns upside down when daughter Kat finds out that she has been illegally adopted.
Trying to find out her real parents Kat and her entourage set out for Chicago but the search is difficult and complicated by murder.
Beside the very gripping mystery part of the story and the great suspense the story has also a well assembled cast going for it that keeps the flow steady and well paced. The romance between Kat and Pierce adds extra interest to the story.
I loved the descriptive talent of this writer, particularly everything to do with horses. As animal lover I enjoyed the knowledgeable and authentic writing skills in that regard, although they were not in the least inferior when it came to the 'detective' parts.
A very good story that is masterfully presented, this should appeal to a wide audience.

Kat Bonner is a great character, a wild and headstrong gal who reminded me of the gorgeous horses in the story. Her gift is in working with horses, but life has a few surprises for this country girl. I felt she was in need of the right kind of love, not taming, just understanding and appreciation. Of course, she finds it in the most unlikely of places.

But this story is no tame romance. Instead, the characters are thrust into a great mystery. Faced with a mysterious past and danger in her present, Kat turns to Pierce. It is fun to watch that relationship change and develop. I found myself rooting for him the whole time but there is so much going on in the story, it is hard to tell what will happen next.

A wonderful story from Joss Landry. It will not be the last book I read of hers.

This romantic suspense kept me interested all the way through as Kat learns she is adopted just after her birth mother dies. Her world is turned upside down when family secrets and rivalries are revealed.

Kat leans on Pierce, and he is a stalwart friend throughout the turbulent days. I thought Kat was often childish and immature, but amazing with the horses. Pierce was patient and sensible; he and Kat had grown up together so he knew her moods and temperament. I loved the chemistry between them.

I enjoyed this debut book from Joss Landry. The suspense unfolded gradually as the characters’ flaws and backgrounds fleshed out the story allowing the mystery to be unraveled with flair and inner satisfaction.

This book was given to me by the author in return for my honest review.

Truth, thrills and romance

Mirror Deep

I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.

A stimulating thriller with murder and disturbing morals. Kat has problems and is faced with many issues in this page-turning gripping read. Truth, thrills and romance are an essence of this tale that the author has spun. The reader is dragged into this story and will have an upheaval of emotional turmoil.

Right to the edge of the last page you will want and want more.

A big thanks to the author for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review

Mirror Deep for me is a surprisingly good read. It’s my first time to read something of this genre. I have never really been much of a fan of murder mysteries or thrillers, but this one got me hook, line, and sinker. I mean, I may not have previous experience in this genre to compare it to but as far as books go, Mirror Deep is a worthwhile read.

Joss Landry’s Mirror Deep is a heart-pounding read that kept me on the edge of my seat page after page after page. And yes, I was turning pages all night long!

The story picked up right from the get-go. That was one of the things I loved most about it. There’s no dancing around the mystery, and it pulls you into its dark world right from the very beginning.

Kat Bonner leads a very idyllic life on the Bonner-Willow ranch… that is, until one secret sends her life spiraling down a path of danger, secrets, and lies. The secret turned her life upside-down-inside-out and rends her unable to discern who she is anymore.

When she sets out to Chicago to try and get some answers, Kat Bonner is thrust into the middle of a decades-old investigation. She’s got more questions filling her head more than ever before. Plagued with apparitions of a girl no one else can see but her, she starts to question if it has more to do with her than she originally thought. Kat desperately struggles to discover how she fits into this whole convoluted mess fearing that her involvement has just placed a large target on her back.

The story progresses on a very gripping pace. It starts out with the key plot event that triggers the events that transpire. From there, the author unfolds each mystery with precision and skill leaving the readers hungry to race to the last page to get answers. Each question answered raises more mysteries left unresolved, all building up to a very riveting reveal.

I have no idea what to expect from one chapter to another. The plot twists leave me so breathless I can barely keep up with the story. In a good way, of course. There were some WTF moments throughout the book where I had to re-read a whole paragraph just to get that new plot twist to sink in. Some of these twists come so far from left field that I was literally reading on the edge of my seat. It was intricate and complex and downright thrilling.

I also loved the character and the way that each one of them is carefully though up, the mark of a talented author. Joss Landry makes you hate them one minute, and love them the next.

The prose and writing style of the writer is flawless. It flows perfectly, threading the whole story seamlessly. The pacing was good, too. I didn’t encounter any dead-air. It was all wham-pow-boom form start to finish.

For fans of this type of novels, I’m pretty sure you would love Joss Landry’s Mirror Deep. But this is a book that I don’t really see myself re-reading in the future. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good book. It’s just not my kind of book. Even though it was such a ride reading about all the scheming and the plotting, it’s not the type of genre that I usually prefer.

So yeah, for people who like murder mystery/thriller novels, I think this would be a good book to add to your collection.

If you know me, then you know I absolutely adore Romantic Suspense (Especially with killers! What? That's normal). This book had a fantastic romance and the suspense was very well done.

First off, let's talk about Kat and Pierce. The book is told in third person, focusing mostly on these two characters. I loved getting the individual perspectives and thoughts of these two wonderful characters as they worked to solve the mysteries surrounding Kat's birth and the serial killer as well as watching them navigate their evolving feelings for each other. The romance was slow and sweet and I felt like I really got a feel for who the characters were. Kat is a tomboy who adores working with horses (family business) and can be a bit petulant and rude (somewhat un-admirable characteristics), but at the same time strong- willed. curious, and very courageous (ah, the good characteristics). I really liked that she is an adult, but still works close with her family and friends. There is a very close feel to the family circle- which makes it all the more devastating when Victor drops his bomb on her (this is a saying. No, he does not actually drop a bomb on her. I hope the NSA does not flag this. My bad, guys.)

Pierce is a hot cowboy, who has a strong protective instinct and love for his family- no matter how annoying they are. Kay and Pierce live to be at each other throats and argue constantly. It is rather ridiculous and childish- which you would expect if you had been raised with someone like they were raised together. This, in turn, makes it more real.

Now, as I previously mentioned, there is a FREAKING SERIAL KILLER. How cool is that. Kat and Pierce have to watch their backs and work to figure out who is killing and why before one or both of them gets killed. Kat thinks she is going crazy and all kinds of characters show up out of left field. I was thoroughly engaged in this book. The mystery was interesting and kept me turning pages to see "whodunit" and the slow romance had me smiling at the duo as they tried to figure everything out.

A pretty solid ending. Oh, and the book had just a bit of paranormal in it. The book was also pretty clean, so the sticklers can read it if they want. No offense. ;) Would recommend to lovers of suspense, slow romance, horses, and cowboys. There is a lot of horse talk in the beginning, which is very interesting as well. (: Well, it was interesting to me anyway. Also, the book was rather long compared to some, so the mystery had time to play out without feeling too rushed. It was quite the read.

There is a bit of a love triangle, though, so if you can't stomach those, I would be just a wee bit cautious.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think that Joss Landry, with her debut, Mirror Deep, had fashioned Katherine, the novel’s hero, to my liking. A horse-whisperer, she’s spunky, independent, courageous, obstinate, and sensitive… with cropped-blond hair to top it all off – boy, did I enjoy writing those words! Indeed, she recalls somewhat Truman Capote’s Holiday Golightly in his famous Breakfast at Tiffany’s, book version.

So there you have at least one out of my five stars.

But of course the book is much more than that. It’s a psychological thriller, detective, romance, ghost-story, and possibly more, rolled into one whole; a little gem.

I don’t want to give too much away, only to say that the talented – sexy – Katherine Bonner will one day discover that she isn’t who she’d always believed she was, by birth, thus igniting a whole series of events and twists with each turn of a page; and right up until the end – ‘villains’ and ‘heroes’ taking us for a ride.

For any reader of the above genres, you really can’t go wrong. And it has a superb plot-line.

But there’s something beyond that for me. And that is the narrative voice, which has an Austin-esque quality, even if the book is set in the present day. I’m referring to Joss Landry’s adept use of free-indirect-discourse, within the 3rd-person narration; how, at times, the author is so engrossed in telling the story that, in turn, we as readers become engrossed also; by the way she taps into the thoughts of her characters; like, if the author will allow me the privilege, the sentence below:

* * * * *
Many questions assailed him, but running on empty with no courage to spare, not even to clear his throat, he stared at the table, turning the brim of his hat in his hands, not quite sure what to do with the damn thing.

It’s persuasive... Yes, I’ll be reading more of her work.

Oh and there you have my five stars. Well earned.

Mirror Deep is a romantic mystery suspense that slowly reveals its secrets.

Kat Bonner is a horse trainer with a special touch. She has been taught by her mother the secrets of horse whispering and is definitely at her best when family and horses surround her. She has lived what most would consider a charmed and secluded life until the day a stranger arrives at the ranch with secrets from the past that destroy everything that Kat believed to be true.

This is mystery suspense with a slow building romance, lots of twists and turns, and a surprising element of the paranormal. There were times that I felt the dialogue dragged. I believe that those times were mostly during the “detective” dialogue. The detectives were a little to “bumbling” for me and I never quite understood all the angst that surrounded their relationships with other characters.

My favorite character was Kat’s grandfather. I enjoyed the voice of wisdom and experience that he brought to the story. I also enjoyed the sense of family that Kat had surrounding her even when everything was falling apart.

I am a big lover of series but there was something very satisfying about closing the book at the end and it really being “THE END”. It has been so long since I read a stand-alone story that it took me a little time to adjust to the length of this book and that’s just sad. I am really going to try to work more stand-alone novels into my reading this year.

Recommendation: If you are in the mood for a medium pace mystery suspense that delivers secrets, danger, a slow building romance, character self discovery, and a satisfying ending then you should give Mirror Deep a try.

Mirror Deep combines a murder-mystery, romance and suspense all in one. Katherine (Kat) Bonner grew up on a horse ranch and competes in Dressage. She has learned to be basically a horse whisperer from her mother and does it very well. I have always loved horses, although I no longer own any myself, and love to read romances where the author really researches and writes well about the horse world. Kat's life is going along fine, she has a boyfriend- really booty call, a hot 2nd cousin who makes her feel strangely and a career teaching and working with horses.

All this changes with one secret that will change her life forever. The secret about her past is spilled and suddenly people are being murdered left and right. Kat ends up deep in the investigation and also a possible target of this serial killer.

I really enjoyed the characters - Kat, Lauren (her cousin and Pierce's sister) and Pierce! They were well rounded characters that the author built on nicely! The storyline went smoothly - I loved the horse bits (remember- horse freak here!) and the bits of romance scattered throughout. The romance was a clean version- no descriptive sex scenes. There were so many different things going on and I was constantly guessing what would happen next, only to be wrong half the time! The author had me completely convinced of the killer until suddenly things twisted slightly and I realized I was completely wrong! ha! I loved it!

I think this book will appeal to murder-mystery lovers as well as romance lovers.

3.5 stars out of 5.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Mirror Deep was an interesting one for me. The story revolves around Kat, who basically has her life turned upside down, and Pierce, who is there (or wants to be there…) to help her through it. The blurb made me curious, so I jumped at the chance to read it.

Honestly…the first half of this book was a bit of a struggle. I was about to give up, and then at 30% it got a bit more interesting, and then at 36% I was even more curious, and by the 50% mark I was thinking the mystery was pretty good so I had to see where it went.

The second half of the novel saved it for me. I liked the suspense and the twists and turns we had along the way. The paranormal element was a surprise, but a pleasant one! I even grew to like Kat and her extended family. The writing, in my opinion, became stronger and things didn’t seem disjointed like they did at the beginning. The characters connected well and everything came together, it was neat to see how it all tied in at the end.

The little discoveries were my favourite bits, how they give you light bulb ‘oh!’ moments and make the bigger picture a bit clearer one step at a time.

I think if the build up was condensed down this novel would have been a cracker. And though it was good once you get through the slow start, it did take some time to get there.

While Mirror Deep didn’t quite hit the mark for me, I would definitely check out more from Joss Landry; the story held promise and I think her future work will be even better.
