3/16/25 TBH I don't know if I finished this on the 12th or the 13th but 🤷🏻‍♀️
This book was ... sadly just OK. I think my expectations were too high cuz I'd really enjoyed other books by the author before? (Is this [her] first?) And unfortunately the word salad translation was ... >.< which I know it isn't fair to rate the book itself on it cuz the translation is a separate issue but ... bleh.

[the fact that on NU and throughout the translation page it freaking says "Boarderland" not ... you know "BORDERLAND." 🤦🏻‍♀️

Honestly my favorite character was FL's brother, although he was all supposedly "sinister" and shit. Which I didn't think so.
The story itself was pretty repetitive. [Oh super dire situation, surprise, FL shows up to fix it with her caravan] or just "hey she's coercing people out of money and fixing problems by throwing money at it" WHICH I GET is an actual way to fix things, but the heavy handed way and the burning bridges... just not smart especially when she fully expects to be the future empress.

Just overall, boo. D+

I actually enjoyed this novel okay. My biggest issue might have been that the translation I read was messed up at times. Especially the sex scene was just BAD. Since I don’t read Chinese, I don’t know if the issue was the translation or the writing. I tend to think its the translation since the name of the novel isn’T translated correctly…

This novel has a lot of food and cooking descriptions. Treat them like youtube shorts, because they make no real sense at times. Those are not recipes you can or should follow and expect something good at the end. I’m not a fan of cooking if I can’t eat it at the end, so I mostly skimmed through them after a while.

The high point of the novel was definitely the characters. Not just the protagonist and the ML, but also the side characters. I really enjoyed the FL family and her people at. the shop. Also, it was pretty nice to see that the original goods was acknowledged as a flawed person who made mistakes, but it was also shown again and again that there were reasons for that and that she did not deserve her fate. Her ending up where she was, was very much a failure of both her parents - mostly the father. (And he got what was coming for him at the end. I really liked him being driven mad by the realization that what happened was in large part his fault. He lost everything because of himself.) I felt a bit bad for the emperor and the original FL, they were in a very different kind of setting from the rest of the novel mood wise, but they were treated as humans and not just as caricatures, which is always a plus. There were a lot of interesting side characters - such as the FL brother - who I thought was pretty cool, he’s only a nice guy in front of the FL.
The relationship between the FL and the ML was enjoyable to read - not perfect, there were some cliches I could have done without, but you could really see why they might like each other. I would have preferred if the “magical appearing taste” had not been included in the novel. Where is this magic coming from? it seems so contrived and was not good, but otherwise it was pretty good. They were both not perfect and made mistakes because they didn’t know much about relationships, but they clearly cares about each others. It was also nice to see how he appreciated the FL for how different she was - not different as in special - but a modern women who was not raised like the others around him. She is industrious and knows her worth, even though she is ver good about not acting to different. She does acknowledge the world she lives in, and also that the other women don’t act different from her because they are bad - this was explicitly stated and I enjoyed that.

There is also the other person who is reborn - the FL original fiancé and the second ML in the OG novel - and even though he was wisened up a lot, he still acts like many reborn people and clings to what he knew in his past life - which end him up in some trouble, though to his credit he did know that he deserved it.

So to sum it up (and add some more..)
+ the treatment of the characters
+ the relationship between the ML and FL
+ the family (messy and not perfect, but not everyone who starts out as critical stays that way)
+ no extreme escalation or revenge
- magical taste return
- the plot is not well paced later on
- three month to build multiple businesses from nothing (…)
- no real struggle after the FL leaves the military camp
- translation issues (probably)

Still a pretty good read, if you don’t want too much drama, perfectly readable even if you skip the cooking. And has a respectful ML. Really, he is great.
