English title: Smash All Pots and Pans To Go to School
4.5 stars rounded down to 4
I wanted to read something different from all the historical/modern settings I've been reading recently, and I came across this story which sounded exactly like what I wanted.
The FL, Wei San, used to be a top engineer on all of earth. One day, she wakes up to find herself in a completely different world, occupying the body of an orphan in a remote, nameless planet. Without a single cent to her name, she has to scavenge in the trash heaps for food, but thanks to her prior engineering knowledge, she earns some money and starts attending the local military school. From there, she slowly rises up to to become a pretty OP dual mecha soldier-engineer.
The world setting is interesting. Everyone takes a perception test as a kid, and you can be classified as A class, B class, etc. Your level determines the extent of your capabilities. Obviously the higher the level, the rarer you are and the more respected you are. The FL starts out as an A class, but let's just say that's not where she stays as the testing equipment on her remote planet wasn't technologically advanced enough to test her true level. The same test also checks which profession you're most suited for, either engineer, soldier, or mechanic.
Don't expect a lot of romance from this story. For the longest time I didn't even realize who the ML was and finally read through the spoiler reviews on Novel Updates out of curiosity, and even by the end, their relationship is barely more than established. This is a pure heroine-driven story that follows Wei San as she rises up through poverty and deals with all sorts of people looking down on her to become a mecha soldier/engineer who is highly respected across the whole universe. Read it if you want some solid action and plenty of shamelessness from the FL and her friends.
The story can be broken down into a couple major arcs. The first part deals with her time on Star 3212. I wasn't super sold on the story at this point but decided to keep reading as I had a feeling it would get more interesting later, and I was right. The second part is short and focuses on her time at Damocles, where she truly starts learning the basics of fighting and engineering. The third part, which is the longest, describes the interschool Hephaestus competition, and the last part deals with our main characters getting involved in the fight for humanity's survival.
Even though the story was really long, I enjoyed it a lot, especially the 3rd and 4th parts. There were many rounds of the competition, but the author does a really good job of making each round's environment very unique. Strategies and alliances kept shifting, and it never felt repetitive. It was also really nice seeing how the Damocles team slowly rose up through the ranks and gained recognition, from the poor team that everyone made fun of at the beginning to a team respected for their abilities.
The reason I'm giving 4.5 stars rather than 5 is that the last arc felt a bit rushed. The author went into great detail for each round in the competition, but things happened super quickly in the last part of the story. There were a couple of moments / battles that I would describe as the climax, and they just came so suddenly that I wasn't ready for them. I wonder if the author realized the story was getting too long and decided to speed things up near the end.
It was nice how the author dropped so many small details throughout the story and it's not till much later that you realize this was all foreshadowing for the big conspiracy that's revealed later. To be honest, it was a little hard to keep up with and remember all the details, but I appreciated how everything fit in together by the end. Of course, not everything was explained, at least not thoroughly, but there was so much going on already that I didn't mind.
Anyways, I'd be remiss in my review if I didn't mention the rest of the Damocles crew. I loved each and every one of them. First it was just Wei San that was fiercely unapologetic and willing to do anything, but as the teachers put it, she slowly "corrupts" the rest of the noble students on the team and soon they're right up there with her in terms of shamelessness and flexibility. Also, the way Wei San taught them to take advantage of other people's money, even though all of them come with families with money, had me cracking up. I love their loyalty to each other and how they're willing to stand up to teachers and authorities to protect one of their own.
Moving onto some spoiler-ish thoughts...
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
I was completely in the dark about who the ML was. Initially I thought it was one of her fellow Damocles students, first guess was Ying Chenghe. When it was obvious that wasn't the case, I thought it might've been the mysterious West Landing fighter in the underground factory. It was after I realized it wasn't both of them that I finally got annoyed and looked it up. I was a bit surprised that it was Ying Xingjue, since he sounds so far apart from the FL in terms of status and his personality is so aloof and cold, but after you see their interactions together it works.
It took a while to get to the point where they start actively collaborating, within the arena and out, but I really enjoyed their interactions. There's just something super satisfying about a super 3S commander directing a super 3S soldier to face down their enemies and becoming an unstoppable team. And the nice thing is that they actively protect each other, so it's a healthy two-way relationship. Obviously the ML helps the FL out a lot with his perception, but she's also fiercely protective of him. When he's discovered in a very compromising position and is accused of killing other students, she actively portrays him as a victim and insists that the evidence isn't conclusive against everyone who tries to take him down. I didn't mind the fact that the romance and their relationship isn't confirmed until the very end, as I felt like their interactions and protectiveness of each other was enough to satisfy me.
There were so many things I liked about Wei San. She's always looking for opportunities to learn. For example, she uses her secret battles in the underground factory to improve her engineer knowledge by dismantling parts of her opponents' mecha to understand how it works. And then her shamelessness kicks in and she'll take away some of the dismantled parts to add to her own mecha XP And speaking of shamelessness, I love the FL's fixation on the ML's hair, to the point where she couldn't resist herself and touched it when she was standing behind him.
Wei San is also constantly misunderstood and gains quite an unruly reputation, like when she's caught by the major to be flipping over school walls in the middle of the night. Everyone thinks she's just going out for drinks and to relax, but she's actually going to work on real mecha stuff at the underground factory. Or when when other people overhear parts of her conversations with Jin Ke and Ying Chenghe about paying money for sleeping and think that they're having a threesome, when she's just renting out empty beds in her dorm room for money XP She's just such an interesting character and very likable as the FL.
While I enjoyed reading through the 8 rounds of the competition, I'm glad the author stopped it early to focus on other plot points. Here's a brief summary of each round for my own reference:
1st round - takes place on Imperial Capital, pretty standard, nothing interesting happens
2nd round - takes place on Sado Star, ML realizes that FL is super 3S when she detects the star beasts in the earth before anyone else does
3rd round - takes place on Gu Yu, a planet with acid rain. This is where our protagonists hit the jackpot with the Purple Liquid Mushroom, an extremely rare mecha ingredient.
4th round - takes place on Fan Han Star, an extremely cold environment. The cold wave (similar to a sandstorm but for the cold) hit unexpectedly early in the middle of the round, and some teams aborted early. Damocles and Imperial both were unlucky and got caught up in the middle of the cold wave. They have to collaborate with each other to escape. This round is one of my favorites because it's the first time FL and ML fight together against the gray beasts in the vortexes. Also, FL's shamelessness comes out in full force as she repeatedly broadcasts Damocles' first place win XP
5th round - takes place on Sita Star, which is mostly oceans and cliffs. Second time Imperial and Damocles collaborate to steal the starship from Samuel and Pingtong! This round was hilarious because somehow the FL managed to rescue the unconscious ML, and he kinda joins their team for the rest of the round while the Imperial team clearly struggles without him
6th round - takes place on South Percy Star, which is a rainforest with many poisonous animals and plants. The heavy rain wakes up the huge mutated Desire Mushroom, which essentially makes everyone do the thing they must desire. For the FL she wants money, so she's still lucid enough where you can direct her by telling her you'll pay her afterwards XP here the FL's hidden abilities as an engineer is revealed, as their team's engineer was knocked out early on and they need someone to fix their damaged mecha
7th round - takes place on White Dwarf Star, Samuel's home base. The wind is really bad here, but nothing really crazy happened in this round.
8th round - takes place on Willard Star, where the whole arena is an empty ground with virtual projection. Because of this, cadets can't tell which star beasts are real or not. This is where everything goes to hell and the infected make their move to try to take out all the cadets, innocent bystanders, and competition-related personnel. After this, the tournament is stopped and everyone tries to make sense of what happened.
Anyways, gonna end my review on a light note with some of my favorite comedic scenes from the novel. At one point, there's a dance between all the schools to foster unity and camaderie, but soon "dancing" becomes a little bit more than that...
Liao Runing, who was on the opposite side, was well prepared, dodged, and kicked him again.
Xiao Eli is also a 3S level soldier. After being stepped on without any precautions, he would naturally avoid it if he was prepared from behind.
Under the cover of music and lights, the two began to step on each other's feet. The harder they stepped on each other, the harder they moved until they were discovered by the people next to them.
A group of people around them had begun to stop and look at these two inexplicable people.
And then when the FL gets involved in "dancing"...
Ying Xingjue's eyes fell on the soles of her shoes, and his eyelashes drooped: If you fight against her, you will always suffer in some way.
Wei San was wearing rivet shoes. She handed the rivets and quick-drying glue to the members of Damocles' school team who had not yet entered. She entered the dance floor and tapped along.
-------------------------
I love the FL's obsession with the ML's hair so much XP She brings it up in media interviews...
The reporter gasped: "Wei San challenged Ying Xingjue, one of the twin stars of the empire, in public! Yes, you heard that right, it was Ying Xingjue! Wei San actually said to Xingjue that his hair was not dry. Friends in the Audience, according to past speculation, this is Wei San's pre- match provocation!"
In the end, the reporter made a generous statement: "According to our reporter's speculation, Ying Xingjue is Wei San's next target!!
She'll bring up his hair on stage...
"What do you want to say to everyone after Damocles Military Academy won the championship this time?" Yu Tianhe took the microphone from Ying Yuerong and asked this customary question.
"Yes." Wei San held the microphone and held Ying Chenghe with one hand in front of the entire federation. "We have always had a question to ask Ying Xingjue, one of the twin stars of the empire."Wei San raised her hand, hugged Ying Chenghe forcefully, and picked up a small handful of his dry hair: "What is your hair care secret?
And finally ML actually burns part of his hair to keep the FL sane against the black insects trying to take over inside her, and guess what?? It works!! XP
“Didn’t you say you wanted to burn my hair?” Ying Xingjue’s gaze locked on Wei San as he seized a handful of his long hair draped over his shoulder. He shoved a lighter into her hand, voice steady, almost taunting: “Imperial's Fire—that was the nickname you all gave me, right?”
Flames raced up the length of his hair in an instant, leaping toward his face. He didn’t so much as blink. Didn’t move. Just stared at her.
Wei San’s eyes were still pitch black—but all at once she shot to her feet and snapped, “Are you insane?!”
Goddamn it!!!
Always threatening me with yourself!
She glared at him, part disgusted, part aching with reluctant concern. Seeing the scorched side of his hair, she muttered under her breath: “Long hair looked better.”
Now that half was so singed it looked worse than Ying Chenghe’s perpetual bird’s nest.
Ying Xingjue just watched her, eyes bright with quiet laughter. “You’re awake.”
Wei San glared harder. “…I’m awake because you scared the shit out of me.”
