Shannon's move to Southern California, to the home of her new stepfather and his family, becomes a nightmare when her mother is struck by a car and left in a coma. Shannon finds refuge with a boy who she learns has the power to shapeshift, and to teach Shannon how as well. The excitement of her new adventures with Matt and his pack forces Shannon into choices she never imagined.
This wasn't really intended to be read by a college student, but I can still say that I was entertained and touched. I liked the characters, loved the setting, and loved the ending. The park reminded me of someplace I know of myself in the LA area, and the interactions of the coyote pack reminded me a little bit of Tamora Pierce's Wolf-speaker.
I wish it was longer and more detailed/complex, but alas, that's what I get for reading YA.
It was a neat story about a girl whos mother is in a coma after being hit by a truck and in the depression stage. Until he finds her self fascinated by a crazy coyote that is hanging around the neighborhood. Until she runs onto a boy name Matt and finds herself in a strange little world of homeless/ family less kids and what their secrete is and how she becomes part of their secret. Great YA story but anyone can read it.
