First Thoughts

Entice is definitely one of the best novellas I've ever read! It was short enough to read in an hour, yet the story wasn't lacking in any way!

For those of you who have read Ignite and want more backstory on how Azael helped Lucifer defeat Michael or what exactly went down with Adam in Eden, you've got to pick Encite up!

What I Enjoyed

Penemuel as a heroine. After reading Ignite and Incite, I had known that Penemuel was a kick-butt heroine, but I wasn't aware of how brave she actually was. In Entice, we see Pen stand up to Lucifer:
This is not what I signed up for.
If the dead deserve no respect, then neither do the people who ordered their execution. I straighten my stance and square my shoulders. I will not bow to him.

Lucifer scared me to death, so you can imagine how I admired Pen for refusing bow down to him.

Gus' epilogue. Wow, another epilogue from this series that has given me the chills! (the first one being Lilith's epilogue in Incite.) If anything, you need to read Entice for the epilogue! Gus' book of fortunes and his look into Pen and Az's futures are quite concerning.

Memorable Quote

Lucifer's blade parries against Michael's, and they circle one another in a twisted, dangerous dance. They're fighting for two opposing sides and each believes his cause is so righteous that they are willing to kill the other over it. I'm not sure who is right; I'm not entirely sure either is right.

Entice is a novella about Pen and Azael who are the main characters from the Ignite series. Before you read this book you really need to read the first book in the series, it will really make more sense. It's also fantastic to see the change in characters and get the backstory after reading about the present, even if that sounds funny. Sometimes it's better to go backwards instead of forward. So the correct reading order is Ignite, then Entice and finally Incite which will be out February 17th 2015.

This story revolves around the final battle between Heaven and Hell, an what the outcome brought about. Pen and Azeal are fairly new fallen angels at this point in time, unfortunately while one twin embraces their evil nature the other wants to shun it. This creates some serious problems for the twins because anything other than total loyalty to Lucifer is grounds for execution.

In Ignite, Azael is nothing but a shell for darkness. He revels in torture and pain, he actively seeks to destroy the world, but in this story that's not entirely the case. This story is the beginning of the end for Azael, and shows how he quickly becomes the monster we know in Ignite. Pen is majorly different as well because she still has a heart. She still misses Heaven, and longs for her old life. She isn't the closed off girl yet, but as the story progresses you see the change and how she evolves to survive.

Entice was a pretty powerful novella. The descriptions were amazing, as I read I could easily picture what Pen saw. I also thought the characters were well written, whether they were good or bad, or simply background characters. I cheered Pen on and worried about her as her story moved along because she felt like she could be a real person. I hated Lucifer because he was just a creep and obviously a devil towards everyone.

I will say this is a darker read, so I would recommend probably readers 16+. There is violence, swearing, etc. because of the subject matter. The story and plot are well written and flow easily which keeps you wanting more from this authors unique world.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher.

This novella is a prequel of Ignite. It tells the story of Pen and Az's fall, the war, and the fall of man(Adam) form Eden.

Some bits I found too long and repetitive because we already knew them from Ignite. I'd say this novella is more of an optional read for those who want to know more (like me), about how it all started for the twins. Also, it was great knowing why Pen went along with everything in the first place.

This is a good read for those who want to know more about how it all started, and what were Pen's reasons for doing everything that she does.

** A big thanks to Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book to read and review **

I enjoyed this book more than what I expected I was going too. I haven't read any of the series apart from this novella. As of about an hour ago I bought Ignite and Incite and I will also be watching out for when the third one is published or even better yet is put on netgalley.

This book goes right back to the beginnings of earth, of Heaven and Hell. When Angels and Demons existed and it was time for Adam and Eve's story to begin. My favourite character in this was Pen she seemed to be the only one who didn't want to destroy everything and doesn't see the lines drawn between good and bad as clear and sharp as everyone else thinks they are. Their lives aren't as black and white as everyone wishes to believe they are.

This was a good introduction into the series because this is the prequel to the first book.

" I clutch the amethyst crystal tighter in my hand, letting the jagged edges of the stone threaten to cut my palm. A book on divination I was reading before our trip to Eden still lies open on my pillow. One small sentence in the densely covered page catches my eye.
Nothing is absolute.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the author, Erica Crouch, in exchange for an honest review.

When I was contacted by Erica Crouch asking me if I would like to participate in Entice Blog Tour, I stopped everything I was doing and immediately replied yes despite being filled with work for University. Of course, I would find a few hours to read Entice since I had previously read and absolutely loved Ignite. As you can picture, I simply couldn’t refuse such an amazing offer.

Entice works as a prequel for Ignite. This book is centred around Pen and Az as fallen angels who are battling against Heaven and trying to bring glory to Hell. After the battle that “killed” Michael, Lucifer’s brother, the siblings are given a task that is mentioned in the first book and it’s deepened in this one: the fall of man in Eden.

I loved Pen in the first book and in Entice she doesn’t disappoint me. Actually, it makes me enjoy her even more. Though this is before the events of the first book, I’m amazed to see that Pen changed since she had fallen but at the same time that she remains true to herself. And, although she’s faced with a dilemma within her, that is later developed in Ignite, she remains truthful to her brother knowing that they are both connected no matter what, no matter what fate. Erica Crouch did a fantastic job of portraying Pen’s continual development without straying too much away from her essence.

Az was still his cocky, vain and conceited self but I enjoyed him. Apart from one particular scene in the book in which he literally scared the hell out of me (which shouldn’t have due to Ignite and what happened at the end of the book – spoilers!), we got the opportunity to meet him differently and to know the dimension of his loyalty to Lucifer.

Of course, I missed Michael in this book though he makes a cameo at the beginning of the story. But I enjoyed the fact that Entice was more about the siblings as soldiers for Lucifer and Pen’s continuous dilemma between right and wrong, Heaven and Hell and that shade of grey she so desperately wants to find, the middle ground between the two opposites poles.

I also enjoyed the small, let’s call it easter eggs for lack of a better word, that appear throughout the book. Especially the story of the stones that Pen and Az carry with them in the first book. Knowing where it comes from and the consequences of that place and task make it even more important.

I have to be honest, I adore Erica Crouch‘s writing. She has a way to play with words that makes it so personal, so passionate and deep that you can’t literally stop reading. It feels like she’s placing her soul into the story as if she’s giving humankind a gift: her words. Pretty much like what Pen did with Adam in this story.

Entice was beautifully written with amazing and very real characters you are immediately drawn to. I simply loved being back in this angels/demons world that Erica Crouch created and developed so well. The whole universe is so dense, so plausible and feels and sounds so real I felt part of it. Just like I did with Ignite. I’m still in awe of the author’s writing since she can make us visualise and feel everything. And this short-story sure was filled with pure and raw emotion.

PS: I was in shock when I finished the book and began reading the Acknowledgements page (it’s something I always do) and came across this:

This was the first time I was ever mentioned on an author’s Acknowledgements page and this made me extremely happy and honoured. Just reading my name there made me the happiest person on earth and made my work worthwhile.

THANK YOU SO MUCH :D

The book covers for this series is just gorgeous, and I believe that the content also delivers. The first book of the series, Ignite, was just wonderful, but I think that this novella was even better. It’s making me really excited for the last book in the series. Since Entice is a prequel and since the story is based off of an old Biblical tale, the plot was pretty much predictable. But the way Erica Crouch made it her own and the story behind everything was definitely brilliant.

"Words could become beautiful art when tied together the right way."

This line in the book speaks so true about the way Entice was written. Erica Crouch not only gave a story, but she also produced art and I was simply mesmerized. The way she put the words together was beautiful. Just beautiful. Reading it felt like opening my eyes, mind, and heart to the wonders of the written word. The attention to detail was simply superb that I was easily immersed into Pen’s world. A lot of Entice was actually mentioned in Ignite. I think the difference is that in Ignite you hear it, but in Entice you actually see it.

This book provides a great deal of insight on Pen and Azael’s characterization in Ignite, as it shows what exactly happened to make them who they are. It also showed a little of what went behind the scenes that explains how they got stuck on earth in Ignite, instead of being high up in the underworld’s social status.

This book starts with the war between the angels and the demons, Michael and Lucifer. Due to Azael’s bold move during the war, he assured that Lucifer would know who he is, and in turn Pen. But Az and Pen have different views and aspirations, and Pen’s insubordination will surely cause them a lot of trouble.

"I turn to paper that I can bend and crease over and over into the strange shape of a warrior I’m now supposed to be."

Despite her own grievances, Pen had no choice but to follow Lucifer in order to keep her brother safe. I really really love Pen and how loyal she is to her brother, even when her brother was slowly losing himself. She’s a really strong female protagonist. But what I like most is seeing a side of Pen that we hadn’t really seen much in Ignite. In Entice, she still has the comfort of her own room, even though it’s in Hell. What I liked seeing mostly was all the clutter of books and papers that she had. I loved how she’s this really fierce demon that has perfect aim with throwing daggers, yet she’s also bookish. My favorite scene would have to be when Az was about to kick down one of her pile of books. She was just so endearingly adorable.

"Another piece of him breaks, and I wonder where the pieces fall."

This line was about Az, and I honestly feel sad at how far he has fallen. I find his merciless side really scary. I think it’s easy for him to embrace the darkness, unlike Pen. I wish Pen could save him though. When Az isn’t being all scary, he’s actually a pretty nice guy. He can definitely make me laugh, and he also thinks a lot about Pen in his own little ways. I love his playful nature.

**************************************************

OVERALL, Entice is one of the best novellas I’ve ever read, and it is just perfect. It is beautifully written and full of substance. Despite being a novella, it felt like a complete story and it could have may as well been a main book in the series. I wasn’t really expecting much from this book. That’s why I put it off for so long. But I was simply surprised with how much it gave me – beautiful, poetic words; humor and wit; real and relate-able characters. I didn’t even mind that there wasn’t any romance in the book. Entice made me fall more in love with the siblings, Pen and Az. I definitely loved this more than the first book, and I want the last book, Incite, as soon as possible!

As most if you probably know, Ignite by Erica Crouch is one of my favourite books of all time. When I finished it, I wrote a fangirling review that accurately depicted my emotions. I was in love with every word that Erica had written, every twist and turn of the plot, every single thing. So when the team at Patchwork Press invited me to join the Entice blog tour, there was absolutely no chance that I was going to decline.

As with everything written by one of your favourite authors, there comes a small amount of trepidation. Will I love this new story as much as the first? I had this thought when I went into Entice. And in all reality, I shouldn’t have.

Entice was the perfect novella. It was long enough to provide you with insight into the overall story of the series, and it was just as beautifully written as Ignite. I should never have worried at all.

Entice gave a look into the battle between Heaven and Hell, Pen’s role in Michael’s demise, and Pen and Az’s initiation into Hell, and how their relationship changed as a result. I LOVED this. I love Pen and Az’s relationship; it is one of my favourite aspects of the Ignite series. They have such diverse interactions, and I was so pleased that Entice focussed on that.

I still adore Az. He just seems so confused and in need of guidance (from someone not evil). I want to pull him out of the page and give him a hug, even if he yells profanities at me and wields his scythe. I’d do it anyway.

Again, Pen was divine. She is hands down one of my all time favourite female main characters that I have read in the young adult genre. She is so dedicated to Az, truly willing to do anything to protect him. And that is so extremely admirable. Again, we were given insight into her beautiful way of thinking, and the confusion she feels towards her situation. I loved finding out why she acts the way she does in the beginning of Ignite. It makes so much more sense now.

I devoured this book in one sitting. I simply could not tear myself away from the world that Erica has created. She writes in such a way that you feel is if you are right there along with Pen; seeing what she sees, feeling what she feels. It is addictive, and amazing. There was not one moment where I wasn't immersed in the world of Entice, and not one moment where I didn’t want that to be the case. Entice is simply superb.

The ending made me so extremely excited for Incite, and I cannot even fathom how I am going to cope with the time that I have to wait before I read more of this story. The Ignite series is fast becoming my all time favourite, and I will most definitely be reading Ignite and Entice numerous times before Incite is finally in my hands!

When I came across my name in the acknowledgements in Entice, my heart literally skipped a beat. I have never felt so honoured. I will always welcome you into my e-reader, Erica!

Erica Crouch has again blown me away with the beauty of her writing, as is becoming the norm with her. If you haven’t read Entice, you need to – now!

Entice is the prequel to Ignite. Here we see Pen and Azael in Hell, after their fall but prior to the events in Ignite. We see the events which led to their being on Earth. If you missed my review of Ignite, which I adored, you can read it here.

I've said it before, but I love words. Ms. Crouch's use of words is captivating. She lyrically draws images and her prose is exquisite and delightful to read. I also love her literary references and quotes. :) I somehow managed to miss the significance of Pen's name in Ignite. Pen was a scribe in Heaven - and the importance of that really hit me in Entice. I adore Pen's love of language and stories and her indelible belief in the power of words. I'm curious to see if 'the pen is mightier than the sword' holds true for Pen.
"...Words are never enough; results take action......I agree, not willing to fight over the magic words hold again..." Loc 1437-1441
I loved this look at Pen. In Entice, we see that Pen, despite her fall from Heaven, hasn't lost her humanity. Seeing her compassion in Hell made the transformation Pen experiences in Ignite more meaningful. We are also made privy to the reasons behind her decision to fall with Azael. We witness her struggle with that decision. Pen longs for the acceptance and sense of belonging she once had with Azael. Thought the course of Entice, she realizes that is something she may never have again. But now that she's fallen, Azael is all she has.

Azael isn't much different in Entice than he is in Ignite. He's angry and arrogant. He believes his place is at Lucifer's side - that he deserves that place following his role in Michael's demise. He believes his actions swung the tide of the war between Heaven and Hell.

In Entice, the action revolves around Pen and Azael's mission in Eden. Following the battle which brought about Michael's death, Azael and Pen are give rank as top-tier demons. They are then tasked with bringing about the downfall of man - a race against two other minions of Hell. The tale Ms. Crouch weaves around this well-known story was fascinating.

Ms Crouch's description of Hell is interesting. Hell, in her imaginings, is cold, icy and blue. I rather like this portrayal. It naturally follows that her Heaven is fiery - angels wielding swords of flame. I also appreciated Pen's reasons for being disgruntled with Heaven - not that it meant she wanted to choose Hell.
"I don't believe in censorship," I smirk back at him. "It leads to arroganze, corruption, and secrets." Loc 518
"Secrets and pride corrupt even the so-called incorruptible." Loc 1458
I truly reveled in getting this backstory for Pen. It helped in my understanding of why Pen chose to follow Azael out of Heaven and why she continued following him. It also provided the foundation to explain her actions in Ignite. And it was gorgeously written.
"I tie my tongue around the unwanted gift I've burdened myself with - caring - and bury it in the pit of my stomach." Loc 788
"I think I'll be walking the line between Heaven and Hell forever - swaying toward the darkness but always reaching to the light." Loc 1754

A free digital copy was sent by the author in exchange for an honest review

It’s not everyday that I love a novella more than the original novel from which it was based on but behold, Entice; one of the best indie books and one of my favorite reads of 2013.

I fell in love with Pen in Ignite but I fell for her character even more in Entice. Her passion for words was infectious and her individuality, her independence and her own sense of self in Hell – where everyone tripped over their tails to please Lucifer – was refreshing. This ferocity of her was juxtaposed well with her complete reliance on Azael, her brother, emphasizing the strength of their bond and devotion to each other, which just made the conclusion of Ignite all the more mindblowing.

Entice was wholly different from Ignite in terms of the antagonist. In the previous book, he was a name, revered and feared but never actually seen in person. Lucifer was more or less the same in Entice but this time, he was an omnipresent antagonist. You could feel him in every single surface of Hell – lurking, listening and watching. Combine Lord Voldemort with Big Brother and you get Lucifer as he is in the world of Ignite. Of course, we do get a few glances of him here and there but these sporadic instances were enough to establish the fact that yes, he was a horrifying villain who made promises and not idle threats.

The most excellent aspect of Entice, however, was how it was able to stress on the theme Ignite had subtly incorporated as well as the overall essence of the entire series. The absoluteness of nothing was evident throughout the entire story, personified by Pen herself. Pen wasn’t absolutely good nor was she entirely evil. She was an active participant in the fight against Heaven and again a forerunner in Hell’s plan to corrupt Adam and Eve. Despite that, she still had doubts and little acts of rebellion, testament to the rays of sunshine in her. I loved how she always tried to suppress the wickedness in her but was overpowered nearly every time by Azael’s dominant evilness.

The depth of the characterization Entice offers is absolutely stunning. Although she was an angel, a mere mortal like me was still able to empathize with Pen’s internal struggle. Even Azael’s lust for power and his blindness to everything but ambition resonated with me.

What makes Entice [and Ignite too, as a matter of fact] so astonishing is Erica Crouch’s spectacular writing. Words run so smoothly that even Azael’s hash threats seem gracious and suave. It’s amazing how various combinations of 26 letters or less could perfectly encapsulate a range of emotions; fear, guilt, anger, confusion, and more. Moreover, Erica’s beautiful writing style is engaging, witty and humorous yet totally thought-provoking. It is superb how she manages to bleed out the theme and core of her books in every single word.

Entice had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It is a dazzling piece of work with amazing characters, droll dialogue and a writing style so flawless and breathtaking, it could have only come from Erica Crouch herself.

Boricuan Bookworms- Book Reviews

When starting a novella, you don't expect it to be so much better than the story it's based on. You don't expect a novella to be substantial enough to actually contribute something to the world you enjoyed so much in the previous books. You don't expect anything at all from a novella, if only for it to be a quick read to entertain you while the next book in the series is available.

Ladies and gents, Entice proved me wrong in so many different ways! First of all, we're faced with a wonderful premise. We get to see more on how Pen & Azael fell from Heaven and now serve hell. We get to see more of Pen's motivations, and we get to see more character from Azael.

If I hadn't said it before, I will now: Penemuel is such a kickass character! She's determined, brave and steadfast in her mission to protect her brother. She will do anything and go to any lenghts so that her brother is safe, no matter the cost. I loved this about her. Azael doesn't even realize how much Pen does for him, and yet she continues protecting him.

I love Azael. Even if Az is the most terrifying person in the world when he's pissed off, I know that I have a soft spot in my heart for him. He's just ultimately lost and trying to do what he thinks will make him more powerful/respected. Az definitely has a wonderful relationship with his sister, and I'm sure that even if he doesn't say it, if something happened to her he would be destroyed.

I remember complaining that Ignite had little character growth, but in this book Pen really comes out of her shell! (This is a bit ironic considering the fact that this is a prequel... Moving on!) We feel her inner struggle at still wanting to redeem herself for her past crimes, but at the same time does not want to be denied of what she thinks is right. Here we understand her much better than we did in Ignite.
"In my mind, I turn to paper that I can bend and crease over and over into the shape of a warrier I'm now supposed to be."
-Entice by Erica Crouch

I also love the way that this story developed. The way that the book ends is obvious from the beginning, but seeing it unfold definitely brought a new twist to the story we thought we knew.

Overall, once I started this book there was no way I could stop reading until I finished it. This has fueled my desire for Incite and has restored my faith in angel-themed books. If you're hesitant to read this series, you should definitely pick this book up.

Entice is a prequel of Ignite (the first book in the Ignite series by Erica Crouch). It tells us about Pen and Az's time while they were both in Hell, particularly about their mission of tricking Adam into a sin and corrupting the Garden of Eden.
This book was as good as I thought it would be - it had the certain amount of action, the certain amount of entertainment and the certain amount of drama. Nothing was too much or too less explored - it was just right!
But there was one little thing I liked more than others - Pen.
Don't get me wrong! I liked Pen during Ignite, and loved her during Incite. But this Pen? This Pen was almost as good as Incite's Pen! (Pen. Pen. Pen. Pen). The question is: what made me like Pen so much in this book? Well, what can I say... you don't get to see your main character being sassy over the Hell's king every day, do you?
"Lucifer purses his lips. "Are you fearless?"
"I fear many things," I say, pulling my hand from him. "Like corruption, corrosion, other words that start with c..." I list a few in my mind.
"But not dead."
"Not my own.""

(And I know this is completely wrong... but I sort of shipped them during this moment? I don't know, I'm crazy, but I did...)

Another thing I really liked about Pen in this book was how much she cared for Az, we can obviously tell from Ignite and Incite that she loves him - as she says that many times. But while reading Entice we don't get her saying how much she cares about him a lot - we get her making us see how much she cares about him - with actual actions.

But not everything I particularly liked on this book is related to Pen. No, actually the next thing I loved the most is related no Azael: I loved the way we could literally feel him getting lost, darker and darker. Losing every single Heavenly-atom that was once on his body.
"I study Az closer, trying to find something familiar, but everything is different now. He stands taller, holds himself tense and ready to fight. There's a coldness in his eyes and the lines of his face that is only broken by a mirthless smirk at cruelty or pain."

And let's not even talk about Erica Crouch's writing, because if we do I might start crying of how good and captivating it is! With the Ignite series, she totally made her way to my top 10 of favorite authors! And this will not be my last book written by her.

Entice is a companion novella to Erica Crouch’s series about Angels and Demons. Although I read this following Ignite, but before Incite, I think its true place in the series, is really as a prequel.
In Entice, Azael and Ren are asked to prove their loyalty to Lucifer by entering the sacred Garden of Eden and tempting Adam to sin. The story’s events are referred to at the beginning of Ignite, as well as Pen and Azael’s tenuous relationship with Gus, a diviner who works in Hell.
Erica Crouch uses Entice to show us more of Lucifer than we see in any other instalment of the series, The frozen wasteland of Hell is as hard and cold as his heart and the only reason he keeps Pen alive is because Azael is as power-hungry as the devil himself. Lucifer’s actions are driven by a need for vengeance, but Erica Crouch does not include his story as a chance for his redemption. He uses the love between Azael and Pen as a manipulation tool, in order to guarantee their compliance.
Entice explores Pen and Azael’s relationship in more depth, as well as the differences in their characters and their place in Hell. Azael is a focused servant of Lucifer, determined to compete for a respected position by his side.
Although Pen stays with her brother, she is unwilling to submit fully to Lucifer’s rule and shows her tenacious character, in arguing with him. Pen still has a strong relationship with words in this novella; she is always surrounded by books, or writing in her journal and there are even references made to classic authors, including Shakespeare
Entice makes a significant contribution to the Ignite series, particularly in revealing more about our key protagonists and the failure of this essential task, asked of them by Satan. I think this will be particularly enjoyed by readers who are already fans of Erica Crouch, but it could just as easily be a quick read for fans of the fantasy genre.

This is a really nice novella, and is part of Erica Crouch's "Ignite" series. It's listed as part 1.5 in the series, but it's actually a prequel to the events in Ignite, so I read it first. Whether that will have an impact on how I perceive the next book (which is Ignite) I don't know yet - but I do know that I'm quite eager to keep going with the series.

The story opens with a battle scene from the war between Heaven's angels and the angels who fell with Lucifer. It is told from the perspective of Penemuel (but don't call her that - just call her Pen) who choose to fall at the urging of her twin brother Azael, and is somewhat conflicted over her decision. Azael has no problem bowing to and "yes sir"-ing Lucifer - he's a true believer in Lucifer's cause, but Pen is more defiant, something that doesn't go over too well with her new boss. This leads to a retelling of the story of the Fall of Mankind in the Garden of Eden.

Crouch's version is original, even as it retains all of the traditional elements of the Biblical story, and the rest of the tale is quite well done. Crouch truly has a way with words and I found myself highlighting several phrases just because I really liked the way she put something. Even though this is a novella, she still manages to give us a good look at what the universe the story takes place in looks like as well as some excellent character building. The only thing keeping me from giving the book 5 stars is that there ars couple of apparent tips - one in particular that resulted in my spending about ten minutes trying to figure out what it was supposed to mean. Given that the book took only about 3 hours to read, having to take that kind of time to puzzle out a sentence made it just that much more irritating that a single typo like that would be in a longer book.

All-in-all, though, this is definitely a book worth checking out!

Ignite was an excellent debut that left me wanting so much more. I wanted to know more about Pen and Az, I wanted to know about Michael and Lucifer, and I want to know what's next for everyone. And while I sit here and wait (not so) patiently for Incite, I'm so glad that I had Entice to tide me over!

This story actually takes place before Ignite, and gives more insight into the Garden of Eden events that are briefly mentioned. We see a lot of Pen and her misgivings about hell and Lucifer and following her brother in his fall from Heaven, and I think that this story is excellent in helping to develop her character. We also learn a little bit more about Lucifer and his hold over Pen and why she's so faithful in her missions.

I thought the re-imagining (I guess you would call it that?) about the fall of man was really interesting. Everyone knows how the serpent tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit and how Eve in turn gave the fruit to Adam. But here, Eve and the serpent don't take the traditional form. I thought it was really interesting to see such a popular Bible story told from a different perspective, while all of the major details were kept the same.

If you've read Ignite, I would definitely recommend reading this novella. I would also recommend this series to anyone looking for a new take on Heaven, Hell, angels, and demons. It's really interesting, and I've enjoyed it quite a bit thus far. I can't wait to read the conclusion as soon as I can get my hands on it! 4/5 for this novella.

The next book in the Ignite Series is Entice. Entice is a novella that takes place before Ignite. It tells the tale of Penemuel and Azael’s fall from grace. It is a retelling of the fall of man and it is much more interesting in Entice than it was in the bible. Pen and Azael are charged with taking down Adam, God’s most sacred creation, along with another team of demons. It is a race to see who can corupt man first, the winning pair earning a seat at Lucifer’s council and the loser left in the cold, dark, emptiness alone in hell.

This prequel is a stunning addition to Ignite and I gave it five out of five stars. While Ignite didn’t feel like Crouch’s first novel, you can tell that she has grown as an author in Entice. There is no pacing problem in Entice, in fact the compete opposite. I never felt that the story lagged in anyway. The characters I began to love in Ignite, I became obsessed with in Entice. Crouch goes beyond the surface with both twins, showing the readers how their motivations are driven from their past.

Both Entice and Ignite are what I would consider must reads. They are perfectly crafted in every way from the gorgeous covers to the exquisitely written story within. The third and final part to the Ignite Series is called Incite and according to Crouch’s website will be released in early 2015. I will be waiting ever so patiently for this last installment.

First things first, I need to say a huge thank you to Patchwork Press, for allowing me to review this book from NetGalley, and to NetGalley for the service that they provide.

'I think I'll be walking the line between Heaven and Hell forever--swaying towards the darkness but always reaching to the light.'

Despite the fact that I only finished the first book in the Ignite series this morning, I couldn't resist diving straight into 'Entice', the novella that sits between the first and second novels. The novella is set in the past, right back during the battle between Heaven and Hell that resulted in Michael's death, and I love any books that give more back story for characters so I adored this.
Straight away we're thrown into the action, with Pen counting the amount of angels she's slaughtered during the battle. She can't find Azael anywhere and, as anyone who has read the first book already knows, she then spots him climbing up a mountain towards Lucifer and Michael who are viciously battling with each other. Pen freaks out, screaming for Azael to get down from the mountain, and when Michael looks over his shoulder to see who is causing such a ruckus, Lucifer strikes him through the heart.
However, as well as getting a much more detailed description of the action that surrounded Michael's death, this novel then goes on to develop another event from Pen and Azael's past that was referenced in the first novel: the Garden of Eden.

4.5 Stars.

Erica Crouch has a way of keeping the readers completely hooked in her books. She has a wonderful way with words that allows you to see the environments exactly the way she intended too.

Unlike her previous work, in my oppinion, this book was never slow. Maybe because I already had some sort of knowledge on the characters or maybe since it was a novella it had to be short and to the point. This being said, Entice is a wonderful piece of work.
I absolutely enjoyed the way she portrayed 'The Garden of Eden' and I loved even more the way she retold the fall of man.

As I said in the review for 'Ignite' I need to know more about Lucifer and Michael, especially how they got locked away together... Maybe Erica Crouch is planning another novella on this subject? Let's hope so.

This author keeps leaving me breathless with her endings, in a way that she hints on what's going to happen next but still, as all good authors do, never says much about it, leaving us readers frustrated and sad, in a good way of course.

I believe this novella was indeed needed in order to fully understand the relationship of Pen and Azael in a more deeper level, to allow us to get even more connected with them, and possibly suffer more once we read the final book in this trilogy.

Something else I must mention before finishing this review, is that the cover is absolutely beautiful, stunning even.

This is a prequel really to the first in the series Ignite and explains so many things. It explains how Pen and Azael rose to the top, how they fell, how they ended up in the position they were in in Ignite. What happened to Michael and why Pen seemed to have a conscious and be good deep inside.

Erica Crouch writes a wonderfully descriptive world of fantasy that draws you in and has you blown away with each new adventure she has occur. You see how Azael becomes the evil he is slowly in the disrobing that Ms. Crouch has come about. She draws you in and leaves you wanting more. My favorite adventure is the garden of eden. That was just a fun and yet important story for Pen and Azael. It is significant in who they become. That’s all I’ll say for I don’t want to ruin it for you with a spoiler.

I love Pen in this novella. she is strong and independent and her love for her brother is so deep and overwhelming. She will do anything for him even lose herself so that he can be what he desires.

I honestly can say that I would read this one and than Ignite because you will appreciate Ignite more if you do. You will appreciate Pen and Michael and the struggles. You will see why Pen has difficulty becoming her own person.

Erica Crouch will have you entranced in her world and its a world you don’t want to miss out on. A must read series.

The descriptive vocabulary used by this author is stupendous in creating characters and worlds that readers can visualise and feel as if they are actually there. Starting with the battle between Heaven and the fallen angels of Lucifer, the scene is brought to life through the eyes of Penemuel (who definitely prefers to be called Pen) who chose to fall to be with her twin brother Azael rather than for any other reasons. She struggles to bow and respect Lucifer, believing the war brought honour to no one but Lucifer uses her love of Azael to threaten and cajole her into subservience. Lucifer is shown as a self opinionated, dark and brutally manipulative character.

Much of the rest of this novella relates the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, told with the author’s inimitably competent and compelling style. The conflicting emotions of Pen are portrayed superbly throughout the novella.

I have no hesitation in highly recommending this to YA and adult readers and will certainly be looking out for the next book in this series and other works by this talented wordsmith and author.

Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy from Netgalley.

A fascinating look at Pen and Azael after the fall of Michael set before the events of the first book Ignite. I love the depiction of Hell in this series, it's morbidly fascinating to see it from the demons point of view especially that of Pen in this novella, fallen but not quite sure if she's made the right choice.

She's trying to be strong and indifferent but torn on where she really stands. I didn't like her brother Az much in this one. He was brutal and arrogant and completely full off himself, sure of gaining status going up in the Hell hierarchy. Pen of course is unwavering loyalty to him which is in a way fascinating as her thoughts are so different.

The story deals with Pen and Az given a chance to prove themselves by corrupting Eden and leading to the fall of Adam. There's hidden twists to the a familiar story ands it's exceptionally well written. Beautifully dark and depicted very clearly. The imagery is amazing. I loved it.

Thank you Netgalley and Patchwork Press for approving my request to view the title. Can't wait for the last book in the series.

A prequel about Eden! This one was almost as amazing as Ignite.

I liked getting further into the mind of Pen and watching the interactions with Lucifer, and watching Azael spiral into madness and lose any and all empathy and love he once had in his heart even though Pen loves him enough to sacrifice everything she stands for!

But I'm over it...really.

This one isn't necessary to continue the series, but I still recommend it.

I received this ebook through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I came across this series yesterday on NetGalley and was really excited to get started reading this. This one is technically #1.5 in the series but it is the prequel to the first novel so I decided I wanted to read this one first. I've said before that I'm not a big fan of novellas because they feel too rushed and short. I was surprised not to feel that way with this one. I really liked the character of Pen. She seems very interesting and for a fallen angel, still has a conscience. Azael irritated me but I think that was supposed to be that way. The story line of the different take on the Garden of Eden was really interesting. The one thing that I would have liked to read about was why exactly Pen and Azael left Heaven.

I bought and read the first book in this series just so I could read this, but I almost wish I'd read this first. This story line is mentioned throughout Ignite, and so we already know the outcome. This made the book drag a bit and is really what's keeping me from giving it five stars. Despite all of this, I really did enjoy this book. I expected it to be a lot shorter, so I was very pleasantly surprised when it was (technically) over 100 pages long.

I'm falling in love with Pen. I love the struggles she's going through, I love her sticking up to the literal King of Hell, I love her loyalty to her brother (even if he doesn't deserve it). I love her so much and I can't wait to see where her story goes.

The writing is beautiful, with nicely done imagery. This series has a lot of promise.

Erica Crouch's first book, Ignite, was an ingenious love story with a distinct Romeo-and-Juliet undertone. Entice has managed to surpass that. This young author spins words into sentences so rich, they have about them the feel of poetry. Her love of words comes across in the character of Pen, a fallen angle struggling to walk the fine line between heaven and hell. She, along with her twin Azael, are given the task of corrupting the first man, Adam, to win a seat on Lucifer's council--which Pen is not sure she even wants. This short novella that bridges the first and second book in the series is a tantalizing appetizer to Crouch's next installment.

This novella was just as wonderful as the first book was. I just can't help but adore Pen, she's got some serious sass and I love it.

It was pretty nice to get more of the back story of Pen and Azael- and come on, I got to see some things first hand that had been briefly stated in the first book. I understand Pen even more now; I finally understand more of why and how she ended up where she was.

Oh, and let's not forget the foreshadowing! Makes me excited and scared for the next book. I will definitely be reading that one as soon as I can!

The story in Entice happens before Ignite. Way before Ignite. Like it starts with Machael's death and it ends with the end of Eden and Adam's fall.

The book gave me a better look at Az and Ren's past and the bond they share. In Ingite I didn't have that chance and I couldn't understand why Pen was so attached to someone like Azael so this novella made me understand her more. I officially dislike Azael and I wouldn't mind seeing him lose and die if it wasn't for Pen's sake.

MINOR SPOILERS

This story is a novella which gives the readers a glimpse as to how Pen and Azael were like right after they fell from Heaven. I enjoyed reading how conflicted Pen was after they fell and how natural Azael felt when they did.

The reader gets a peek into Crouch's form of Hell which I found interesting. I liked seeing Lucifer and the various demons that lurked in Hell but I was a little surprised to see Lucifer wasn't as scary as I expected him to be, maybe it was because Pen wasn't afraid of him, but he was clever and manipulative.

If you've read Ignite, you don't really learn anything new that you haven't seen in Ignite. But you do get a peek as to the roles Pen and Azael played when attempting to corrupting man.

All in all, this is a nice prequel to Ignite and if you're on the fence about reading Ignite then I recommend reading this story to get an idea of what to expect in Ignite. I believe it is available to read on the author's wattpad account.

3.4 out of 5 rating for me!

For full disclosure, copies of this series were provided by the publisher for an honest review. I was not compensated in any other way.

The war against Heaven has just ended – with Lucifer striking Michael down and his soul being imprisoned in Hell. Azael, instrumental in defeating Michael, is eager to rise within Lucifer’s councils and reach the upper echelons of demonhood

Pen, his twin sister and fellow fallen angel, is not nearly so keen. She left Heaven because its censorship, its rigidity, its lack of thought and questioning was too much for her – she’s not thrilled that Hell seems to be little better

But Lucifer is determined to make her fall in line – and he has a task for the twins: the corruption of Adam

I was rather surprised by this book’s length. As a story between book 1 and 2, I expected a novella of some kind, but this book kept going on. And on. And on and on.

Yeah… that’s kind of not a good sign.

I’m not saying it was a bad book – because it wasn’t, not even close. It was just… an unnecessary book. After reading Ignite we know several things about Pen and Azael. Azael is evil, short tempered, impetuous and desperate to get in Lucifer’s good books. Pen is extremely conflicted about this whole Hell thing, she fell because she disagreed in keeping mankind ignorant of language (and ignorant in general), she found Heaven dictatorial, censorious and unreasonable – so she fell but found Hell to be no better and she’s not willing to jump on the “yay Lucifer” train but is dragged along because she has nowhere else to go and because she has an almost creepy attachment to her brother.

And in Entice we’re shown that Azael is short tempered, impetuous and desperate to get into Lucifer’s good books. While Pen is conflicted, not happy with Heaven but really not sold on Hell either, but is dragged further into it because of her almost creepy attachment to her brother.

Both stories are good. Both stories develop the characters well. Both stories show someone who is deep and nuanced with many lairs with a joyous love of language woven into them. The conflict is really well presented, the pressures on Pen shown excellently. I can’t overstate how well presented Pen’s emotional conflict and motivations are presented in both stories.

But we didn’t need both stories to tell us the same thing, to excellently portray the same emotional conflict and torn priorities. It was so well done the first time, it didn’t need to be excellently done the second time.

This isn’t helped that the story in this book is one that Pen referred to in Ignite – the story of how Adam ate the fruit of knowledge and how she and her brother were tasked to lead Adam into temptation. But the broad story has already been told in Ignite, we know how this ends, we know who their opponents are, we know what Penn and Azael’s tactic was, we know what the others’ tactics was, we know which one succeeded and we know what this says about Adam and humanity’s weaknesses.

Entice is a novella in the Ignite series by Erica Crouch. I absolutely loved Ignite and when I finished it I immediately purchased Entice. Entice follows suit with the same beautiful writing style that I fell in love with in Ignite and adds a lot more character development from what we saw in Ignite. For a novella, Entice was rather long which was great.

This is listed as a 1.5, but it takes place before book one so for me it is a prequel. I was really excited to see what happened after the first book, but it was just an explanation of things we already knew that happened.
It felt like a reiteration of the flashbacks told to Michael in book one, but at the same time I did want more explanation. The past felt very brushed over in the first book.

It does show that Michael was just the catalyst of Pen's rebellion from Hell. Also that there was more tension between Pen and Azael in the beginning. They weren't always as close as they were at the start of Ignite.
The novella shows the character growth that Pen has from not feeling like she has a choice, to making an active choice to separate from Hell.We see how Pen meets Gus their demonic mentor.

I really liked that Erica Crouch retold the Eve and Adam story, putting in her characters making another back story to it and we got to see how that occurred. I loved hearing how Azael and Pen didn't expect the apple plan to work. As a reader you know how this ends, but the characters don't and it ends up making a serious chapter funny. It was also great to read more of how Pen introduced language to Adam.
The epilogue was in Gus's p.o.v which was interesting. I like that both books ended in a different character's epilogue. It was a great description of someone seeing the future.

I didn't love Entice as much as Ignite, but it still was a great story. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I highly recommend it.

(Source: I recieved a digital copy of this book free of cost for a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Erica Crouch and Netgalley.)

I had a feeling this book was going to confuse me because this is in fact in the middle of the series Ignite so I barely knew what was going on. Through the book I felt as if I was always missing something that was going on.

Pen:
I don't know how someone is not afraid to die, I am terrifed to die but I guess things work differently for other people. What I loved the most about Pen was that she loved to read, I really love that she loves to read. I think that is one of things I liked so much about her.

Az:
Ah soldier boy. I did like Az but at the beginning he was getting on my weird side how he was acting. But he was alright, and funny.

As I said, since I never read Book 1 I have no idea if I did miss something because I felt like I always missing something as the book went on.
