The author paints a wonderful image of early Renaissance Florence, from the struggles over religion to the artistic improvements. But the scenery never overpowers the story of two couples moving through that world, Cosimo and Contessina and Cosimo’s younger brother and his wife, Ginevra.

This is the first part of a trilogy about the Medicis, the most powerful family in Renaissance Italy. The family that virtually invented renaissance! When I saw that the first book was called Contessina, I thought: lovely, a woman, maybe she was the secret brain behind the success story, the voice that was never recorded in history books.

Well, she wasn’t. In this saga, her main merit was to be beautiful. And that was it. She was also very much in love with her husband, the ingenious Cosimo Medici. And he loved her. And Cosimo’s brother loved his wife Ginevra, but she didn’t love him back. And Cosimo’s father loved Contessina’s mother, but that was an unofficial love.

What the family actually did to become so rich and powerful is barely mentioned. I was deeply disappointed.
