হত্যার বিভীষিকা মেশানো পুরী বা বাড়ি, অথবা পুরী শহরে হত্যাকাণ্ড— বিখ্যাত রহস্য-রোমাঞ্চ লেখক জটায়ুর দেওয়া ‘হত্যাপুরী’ নামটি দু’-অর্থেই সার্থক। হ্যাঁ, ফেলুদার এই নতুন রক্তাক্ত অ্যাডভেঞ্চারের ঘটনাস্থল পুরী-শহর। আর এই নতুন পরিবেশে অপরাধ এবং অপরাধী দুই-ই নতুন ধরনের। ফেলুদার মতো দুর্ধর্ষ গোয়েন্দাকেও হতচকিত হতে হয়েছিল প্রথমটা। কেননা, পুরী শহরের এই হত্যাকাণ্ডের পিছনে বারবার যে-জায়গাটার রহস্য মিশে রয়েছে তা হল নেপাল। বস্তুত, নেপালে যে-ঘটনার সূত্রপাত তারই জের টেনে পরপর দু’-দুটি খুনের মুখোমুখি হতে হল ফেলুদাকে, সমুদ্রতীরে হাওয়াবদলের ইচ্ছে বিসর্জন দিয়ে লেগে পড়তে হল গোয়েন্দাগিরিতে। সঙ্গে অকৃত্রিম তোপসে আর জটায়ু।

নেপালে না গিয়েও পুরনো নাটকের যবনিকা কীভাবে নতুন করে সরালেন ফেলুদা, কী করে ধরলেন এক অতি ধুরন্ধর অপরাধী ও তার শাগরেদ ধূর্ত, ফন্দিবাজ এক ভেকধারীকে, তাই নিয়েই এক অসামান্য রহস্য-উপন্যাস ‘হত্যাপুরী’। সঙ্গে সত্যজিৎ রায়ের অনন্য অজস্র ইলাসট্রেশন এবং তাঁরই আঁকা প্রচ্ছদপট।

About the author

Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Early Life and Background:
Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.

Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.

Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).

Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

With the summer heat in Kolkata becoming unbearable, Feluda, Topshe and Lalmohon Babu decides to go to the beaches of Puri to cool off. However, in the course of their travels in Puri, they come across two intriguing characters – a wildlife photographer who has returned from Nepal and an astrologer who can read one’s past and the future by touching his/her forehead.

While not obvious at first, it soon becomes clear to Feluda that strange events involving these two men and a few others in Puri are strung by a common thread – a mysterious man named D. G. Sen, who a certain uncle of Feluda used to know.

কেন জানি চরিত্র অনেক বেশি মনে হচ্ছিল। প্রায়ই হারায় যাচ্ছিলাম। কে যে কে সেটাও ভুলে যাচ্ছিলাম। :P কিন্তু তারপরও দুর্দান্ত লাগলো। রহস্যের কোন কূলকিনারা করতে পারি নাই শেষ হওয়ার আগ পর্যন্ত। আর এটাই তো গোয়েন্দা গল্পের মজা।

এতো মানুষের হিসেব রাখতে গিয়ে একটু গোলমালই লাগছিলো। তবে একটা ব্যাপার, ফেলু মিত্তিরের গল্প গুলোতে এমন সব সৌখিন লোকেদের দেখা মেলে, যারা পুথি সংগ্রহ করেন, ঘড়ি কিংবা মুখোশ। এই লোকগুলো কি হারিয়ে গেছে ইদানীং? এধরণের লোকের কথা পড়িনা কেন কোথাও?
আমার পুরী যাওয়ার ইচ্ছা হচ্ছিলো, ক'দিন আগেই (আদতে এক মাস) ঘুরে এলাম সেন্টমার্টিন থেকে। আমার ধারণা, পুরী হবে আমাদের কক্সবাজারের মতো, কারণ আমি দেখেছি পুরী বেশ ফেমাস জায়গা- সব ধরণের লোকেই যায়। তাই হয়তো এমনই হবে!

বছর শেষ হতে বাকি আড়াই মাস, গুডরিডস চ্যালেঞ্জ শেষ। তাই আরাম করে আয়েশে বসে পুরনো বই পড়া যায়। হত্যাপুরী সম্ভবত আমার পড়া প্রথম ফেলুদা ছিল, যখন আমি কিছুই বুঝতাম না , শুধু বানান করে রিডিং পড়তে শিখেছি; তখনকার পড়া। পরে যখন পড়েছি তখন বুঝলাম , এটা ফেলুদার ডার্ক গল্পগুলোর একটা। যাক , বৈকুণ্ঠ মল্লিকের জন্যই শুধু একটা তারা বাড়িয়ে দেওয়া যায় বইটাকে।

Satyajit Ray’s The House of Death (Jato Kando Kathmandute) is one of those Feluda mysteries that feels like both a detective puzzle and a journey into an unfamiliar land.

This book stands at a point in the Feluda series where Ray had already perfected his formula—pitting the cool, rational mind of Feluda against a backdrop of danger, eccentric characters, and cultural intrigue.

What makes this story stand out is its location: Kathmandu, Nepal. Instead of the familiar bylanes of Calcutta, we follow Feluda, Topshe, and Jatayu into a city humming with temples, crowded markets, and an aura of mysticism that Ray captures with a traveller’s eye as much as a storyteller’s pen.

The plot begins innocuously with the trio on a short vacation, only to be drawn into the affairs of a wealthy Bengali family tangled in disputes over inheritance. From the moment Prabeer Majumdar confesses his fears to Feluda, the tone shifts from leisurely travelogue to mounting suspense.

Soon, the Majumdar feud spirals into tragedy when one of the brothers turns up dead in their Kathmandu residence. While others lean toward accidents or fate, Feluda notices the gaps, contradictions, and hidden motives that point towards a calculated murder.

Ray’s narrative builds on this contrast between superstition and reason—fortune tellers and ominous warnings appear, but Feluda cuts through them with clinical deduction. Alongside the grim tension, Jatayu provides delightful comic relief, making the narrative lighter and more humane. In many ways, this novel balances travel writing and whodunits, with Nepal not just as a backdrop but as an active texture that influences the mood of the mystery.

Though some readers feel the conclusion resolves swiftly, the novel remains a fan favourite for its atmosphere and its mix of suspense, humour, and cultural depth.

At around the midpoint of the Feluda series, The House of Death showcases Ray’s brilliance in expanding detective fiction into new landscapes without ever losing the charm of his characters or the sharpness of Feluda’s logic.

পুরী হল হত্যাপুরী।দু দুটো খুন। সাথে আটশ বছরের পুরাতন একটা পুথি উধাও। এদিকে পুরীর বালুবেলায় দেখা গেল রহস্যজনক পায়ের ছাপ সাথে একটা লাঠির ছাপ। সাধারনত লাঠি সবাই ডানহাতে ধরলের লাঠির ছাপ বা দিকে।
ফেলুদা এবার পুরীতে। তিনমাস ধরে তার কোন কেস নেই। তবে ফেলুদা ঘরের বাইরে গেলেই রহস্য যেন তাকে ঘিরে ধরে। পুরী গিয়েই আবিষ্কার করলেন একটা ডেথবডি। পরে জানা গেল মৃতদেহটা একজন নেপালি'র। এদিকে পুরী গিয়েই লালমোহন বাবু সন্ধান পেলেন এক ভদ্রলোকের যে কপালের মধ্যে হাত রেখে বলে দিতে পারে তার ভূত, ভবিষ্যৎ, বর্তমান। একরাতে ফেলুদা মাথায় বাড়ি খেয়ে পড়ে রইলেন সমুদ্রের ধারে। মাথায় রক্ত অথচ মাথা ফাটেনি। হাটতে হাটতে লালমোহন গাঙ্গুলী আবিষ্কার করলেন এক অর্ধ-বিদ্ধস্ত ভুতুড়ে বাড়ি। এমনিতে কারোও থাকার কথা নয় সেখানে, তবে মানুষের চিহ্ন সেখানে পরিষ্কার, সদর দরজায় পানের পিক, ব্যাবহৃত চার-পাঁচটা দিয়াশলাই, পায়ের ছাপ।

ফেলুদার সাথে চোরাচালানকাড়ীদের মোলাকাতগুলো সবসময়ই বেশ রোমাঞ্চকর হয়, এবারও ব্যতিক্রম না। চরিত্রসংখ্যা বেশি হওয়ার কারনে বেশ করেকবার তালগোল পাকিয়ে ফেলেছি। রহস্যও বেশ অনেকগুলো, সাসপেক্টও কম না। ফেলুদা কি পারবেন এই রহস্য সমাধান করতে, অবশ্যই পারবেন। তবে কি ভেলকি দেখাবেন এবার ফেলু মিত্তির সেটা জানার জন্যই পড়তে হবে 'হত্যাপুরী'।

Oh man Feluda defined my childhood. Our very own Indian Sherlock Holmes never disappoints. This story was quite fun: I could more or less guess the reveal but the story/motive that follows was beyond my grasp. My only issue was, that in true Sir Arthur Conan Doyle/Agatha Christie fashion a volley of characters were introduced in the first 5-6 pages and that confused me a bit.

আমার খুব পছন্দের একটা গল্প। ফেলুদা সমগ্রের দ্বিতীয় খণ্ড শুরু হয় এই গল্পটা দিয়ে, আর গল্পটা আনএক্সপেক্টেডলি বেশ ভালো লেগেছিলো আমার। এখনো মোটামুটি সবই মনে আছে 😅

When it comes to thrillers or mystery fiction, writers generally take a long time in building a plot, throwing off suspicion with conflicting evidence and then, in the end, surprise us. But I guess in just around 100 pages, this is the best you get.

This is the first Satyajit Ray I read. And I think he did a decent job at surprising us with the end. All in all, 3 stars for the good ending but uninteresting start of the book.

গতকাল রাত্রে ২০২২ সালে রিলিজ হওয়া ইন্দ্রানীল সেনগুপ্তের অভিনীত ফেলুদার হত্যাপুরী অভিযান নিয়ে করা সিনেমাটা দেখা শুরু করছিলাম কিন্তু পরাক্ষণে মন বলল, তগে বইটা না পড়ে সিনেমা দেখা হয়ত ঠিক হচ্ছে না। তাই মুভি pause করেই আগে বইয়ের পৃষ্ঠায় নজর দিলাম। আর হারিয়ে গেলাম পুরীতে।

সত্যজিৎ রায়ের সৃষ্টি, বাঙালির সবচেয়ে প্রিয় গোয়েন্দা হচ্ছে ফেলু মিত্তির। চরমম আসক্তি ধরানো এই সিরিজটা এ মাসে প্রায় শেষের দিকে নিয়ে এসেছি পড়ে। এত এত উপভোগ করছি তা বলার বাইরে। কি অসম্ভব সুন্দর করে উপস্থাপন করেছেন লেখক।

তবে এই গল্পটা কেন জানি শেষে গিয়ে খাই হারিয়ে ফেললো। সবই ঠিকঠাক ছিল, হঠাৎ করে কি যে হল। কেস সলভের জায়গাটা অনেক প্যাচঘ্যোচ লাগছে।
সে যাইহোক, এখন মুভিটা দেখব, আর তর সইছে না।

এই বইটি পড়ে তিনটি বিষয় সম্পর্কে নতুন ধারণা হয়েছে একটা হচ্ছে উড়িষ্যার পুরী সমুদ্র সৈকত,দ্বিতীয় টি হল পুঁথি যেটি প্রাচীন আমলে গাছের ছাল সরু লম্বা করে কেটে লেখা হতো যেটিকে বলা হয় ভুর্জিপত্র এবং কপালের মাঝ বরাবর জায়গাটিকে বলা হয় পিনিয়াল গ্ল্যান্ড।

ভ্রমণের উদ্দেশ্যে পুরী গেল ফেলুদার দল। ভ্রমণ থেকে রোমাঞ্চ। সেখানে এক পুরনো, ভুতুড়ে বাড়ির দিকে তাকিয়ে লালমোহনবাবুর উক্তি করা "হত্যাপুরী" নামটাই হয়ে গেল এই রোমাঞ্চ উপন্যাসের টাইটেল।

লেখক বলছিলেন পুরীর সমুদ্র সৈকতে রাতের বেলা ঢেউ আছড়ে পড়ার শব্দে গা কেমন ছমছম করে। এমন একটা ছমছমে পরিবেশের মধ্যে উপস্থিত রহস্য। দুইয়ে মিলে খুব উপভোগ করেছি হত্যাপুরী।

সত্যজিৎ রায়ের বই মানেই অসাধারণ কিছু একটা। পড়তে গেলে মনে হয় যেন চোখের সামনে সব ভেসে উঠছে। পুরীতে না গিয়েও সেখানকার সমুদ্রের গর্জন, বালিতে পা ফেলে হাটা সব এত বেশি সুন্দর করে লেখা মনে হয়েছে যেন আমি নিজেই ফেলুদার সাথে রহস্যে জড়িয়ে পড়েছি। খুবই অসাধারণ বই। মাস্ট রিড ফর এভরিওয়ান। ❤️

আমার কাছে কেন যেন রহস্যটা জমজমাট মনে হয়নি!
আসলে ফেলুদার অন্যান্য গল্পের প্লট এটির তুলনায় অনেক অনেক বেশি রোমাঞ্চকর আর জমজমাট!

তবে হ্যাঁ, জটায়ুর ভূমিকা বরাবরের মতই কমিক রিলিফ আনতে বাধ্য! 💚

Feluda goes to Puri with Topse and Jatayu. While there, Topse and Jatayu discover a body on the beach. Later, they visit D.G. Sen's house to see his ancient scripture collection. During their visit, they meet Bilash Majumder, who has partially lost his memory after falling off a cliff in Nepal. He believes that D.G. Sen pushed him, as Sen was the only one present with him at the time.

Soon after, D.G. Sen's assistant, Nisith Pramanik, is found dead in a dilapidated house. From the evidence found at the scene, it becomes clear that Nisith was secretly selling Sen's scriptures without his knowledge and replacing them with fakes.

Feluda is attacked and struck with a blunt instrument but survives. He later meets Sen's estranged son, with whom Sen has had no contact for years.

One night, Feluda and his team stake out on the beach and spot two suspicious figures. When the men realize Feluda's presence, they shoot at him, but Feluda confronts them and, with Topse's help, manages to capture them. The two men are revealed to be Bilash, who is actually Sarkar in disguise, and Laxman, a doctor and astrologer living on the ground floor of D.G. Sen's house.

The truth is revealed: Sarkar is a smuggler who assumed Bilash Majumder's identity. He came to Puri to steal Sen's collection. He is the one who pushed Sen in Kathmandu with the help of his driver, Singh. The real Bilash Majumder had died long ago. Nisith Pramanik had caught Laxman stealing a manuscript, so Laxman killed him. Sarkar also killed Singh, who had come to extort more money from him.

কলকাতার গরমে অসহ্য হয়ে দল বেঁধে ফেলুদারা পুরী এর সি বিচে ঘুরতে গিয়েছে। সেখানে এক গণকের সাথে লালমোহনবাবু দেখা করেন। নাম "লক্ষণ ভট্টাচর্য" , উনি কপালে হাত দিয়ে ভবিষ্যৎ বলে দিতে পারে। ভাড়া থাকেন দুর্গাগতি সেন এর বাড়িতে। সেন মশাই এর পুথির শখ। অনেক প্রাচীন পুথি আছে তার কাছে যার দাম অনেক। বিলাশবাবুর সাথে ফেলুদাদের পরিচয় হয়। তিনি নেপালে ছিলেন যখন , তখন দুর্গাগতিবাবুর সাথে দেখা হয়। একদিন ভুল করে সে দুর্গাগতি বাবুর হোটেলের কামরায় ঢুকে পড়েন। সেখানে তিনি এমন কিছু দেখেন যেটা দেখা তার উচিৎ হয়নি। তার পরের দিনই নাকি সে পাহাড় থেকে পড়ে গিয়ে মারাত্মক ইঞ্জুরী পান। তাই ঐ ঘটনার আগের কোনো মেমরী নেই। এদিকে দুর্গাগতি সেন এর মূল্যবান পুথি চুরি হয়েছে। সন্দেহ করা হচ্ছে দুর্গাগতি সেন এর সেক্রেটারি নিশীথ বোসকে। তদন্ত করে একটি ঘর এর সন্ধান পায় ফেলুদা। সেখানের আশে পাশে তাকেও এটাক করা হয়। তাই আবার তদন্ত করে সেখানে যায়। লালমোহনবাবুর ভাষায় সেই বাড়ির নাম "হত্যাপুরী"। সেখানেই মেলে নিশীথবাবুর লাশ। সেদিন রাতে ঘাপটি মেরে বসে থেকে ২ কালপ্রিটকে ধরা হয়। লক্ষণবাবু আর বিলাশবাবু। আসলে বিলাশবাবুর পাহাড় থেকে পড়ে যাওয়া সত্যি কিন্তু সেই বিলাশবাবু মারা যায় ৩ মাস আগে। আর এই নকল বিলাশবাবু তার জায়গা আর পেশা নিয়ে ঘুরছে। আর দুর্গাগতি সেনকেও পাহাড় থেকে ফেলে দেয় বিলাশবাবু কিন্তু দুর্গাগতি সেন বেঁচে যান এবং তার আগের কোনো মেমোরি নেই । পুথি চুরিতে ধরা পরে যায় নিশীথবাবুর কাছে তাই তাকে মেরে ফেলা হয়।

This was my first book by Satyajit Ray. I've enjoyed so many of his films. But I'd never known that he'd also written stories. Apparently he wrote 34 Feluda stories. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Pradosh C Mitter is Feluda, the super sleuth. Tapesh Ranjan Mitter is Topshe, his cousin and the narrator, and Lalmohan Ganguli 'Jatayu' is a writer of popular crime thrillers.

The six stories in this collection were The House of Death, Napoleon's Letter, The Disappearance of Ambar Sen, Crime in Kedarnath, The Acharya Murder Case and Murder in the Mountains.

The character of Feluda was a Bengali version of Sherlock Holmes, with Topshe acting as Dr Watson. Topshe and Jatayu are both foils. All the brainwork is Feluda's.

There were a lot of grammatical and proofing errors in this book. A number of characters had their names spelt differently or even changed completely through the stories.

It was one of the best Feluda stories that I have come across ever. Now, my favourite! :D

Though as with most detectives all the ingenuity is explained in a Poirot fashion at a gathering including the police, the criminals and our beloved Feluda, Topshe and Lalmohon babu at the end, and that's always a bit annoying for me since I would like a more gradual dispension of the suspense a bit alone the lines of Christie's 'And then there were none'. But the story was a lot less predictable as compared to many other Feluda ones where the villain is evident from the beginning, mainly being written for young adults but loved by all Bengali readers.

All in all, it was an enjoyable time spent with 'Hatyapuri'. Happy reading! :)
